As Joe Biden releases his tax plan, we fold in a deep dive into the odds of a financial transaction tax hitting wealth management. The pace of mergers and acquisitions in the RIA space fell off pace from March through May, but ramped back up in June, suggesting the second half of the year could be on pace with the record levels of 2019. IN technology reporter Nicole Casperson joins the podcast to explain Wells Fargo's challenges getting the TikTok app removed from company-issued devices. And Nicole, who was hired in May, shares her perspective on what it's like to be interviewed, hired, and start a new job without a single in-person meeting with her new colleagues.

I wanted to take a step back from the normal format of the show to bring to your attention a situation that 100% pertains to the world of "trading". As citizens  of the USA, you know we have an election coming soon. While I may disagree with who you vote for, I can respect it and hopefully we can all agree on the central idea that "being educated about policy" is a worthwhile effort. If you are a trader or have ambitions of becoming a trader, no matter your account size, this is a policy that needs to be factored into your voter analysis. No worries, this is not some hour long podcast where I "get political", it's simply an episode with the goal being to give you information that you can then use in your "who I'm gonna vote for" analysis. Let's get to it!

They also analyse the nature and the implementation of the Recovery Plan, from the perspective of progressive requirements. As member of the EP Committee on Budgets, Gualmini highlights the importance of innovation in the area of own resources. She clarifies that this is not about taxing the citizens but the big companies and multinationals with a new type of taxation like the digital or the carbon tax. Gualmini and Andor agree on the need to bring back to the table the Financial Transaction Tax and they also highlight the innovative aspects of Next Generation EU like the common debt and the grants (even if there is still no clarity about some aspects like the loan repayment). Finally, they extend the discussion to rule of law conditionality and the job creation potential of EU budget instruments.

100 Campaigns that Changed the World

In this pilot episode recorded last year I talk to David Hillman, who cut his campaigning teeth on the anti-Apartheid campaign before going on to work on the hugely successful effort to ban landmines and drop developing country debt. He is currently director of Stamp Out Poverty, working for a number of years on new sources of finance for development and leading UK campaigning for a Financial Transaction Tax. In 2010 he also helped create the Robin Hood Tax campaign, a network of more than 100 UK charities, trade unions, faith organisations and green groups pressing for a tax on financial transaction. This week, we will expose the myths around the Bernie Sanders Tax Plan. Many supporters of the Clinton campaign have asserted that American voters would not support a presidential candidate who proposed to raise their taxes. The Tax Foundation has published a less-that-accurate analysis of this tax plan suggesting that it would cost jobs, GDP, and wages. Robert Pollin, author of Thoughts on Tax Rates and Revenue Potential for Financial Transaction Tax in U.S. Financial Markets, an analysis of potential revenue and costs of adding a small tax on Wall Street stock and bond transactions, will join us this week to discuss this analysis.  We will also welcome Deborah Burger, President of the National Nurses United Union, who will discuss the prioritites of her organizations's membership and how they relate to the Sanders Campaign's issues. We will also feature an interview with Dr. Gerald Friedman, professor of economics at University of Massachusetts, discussing his analysis of Bernie's tax plan to pay for his healthcare proposal.

Would a Financial Transaction Tax Affect Financial Market Activity?

Cato Event Podcast

In the wake of the financial crisis, commentators have suggested a transaction tax (Tobin tax) on financial markets. The potential consequences of such a tax could be hazardous to the financial markets affected, as well as to the economy. Professor Wang, in a recent Cato paper, reviewed the relevant theoretical and empirical literature and applied these findings to estimate the possible impact of a transaction tax on U.S. futures market activity as well as its utility as a potential source of tax revenue. Wang showed that a transaction tax on futures trading will not only fail to generate the expected revenue, it will likely drive business away from U.S. exchanges and toward untaxed foreign markets. Our panelists will discuss the implications of this paper as well as general issues related to any proposed financial transactions tax. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
