According to Forbes, Alabama ranks 19th in the U.S. for first-generation college students (39%). Students whose parents did not attend college are more likely to come from racial minority backgrounds, identify as female, have dependents, and many other reasons. In the final episode of Season 2 of The Problem with Poverty Podcast, we are joined by Brandi Powers, a teacher at our Vivian Conatser-Turner Early Learning Center. Brandi recently received her Bachelor of Science in Educational Studies with a Concentration in Early Childhood from Athens State University. During the discussion, Brandi talks over her journey of becoming a first generation college graduate out of her family. Brandi is amazing example of just because you come from nothing, doesn't mean you can't make something of yourself and change your future for the better. That's a wrap for Season 2! Active in campus groups like International Student Admissions and the School of Business Torch Team Ambassadors Program, she credits GGC for providing a supportive environment and plans to pursue a master's degree in accounting after gaining work experience. STORY 2: GCPS Parent Mentors to host presentation to help parents support special education students Gwinnett County Public Schools Parent Mentors are hosting a presentation titled "Behavior Strategies to Support Your Child" for parents of students receiving special education services. The session, scheduled for December 5, will cover identifying problematic behaviors, understanding the four primary functions of behavior, and offering tips and techniques for addressing behaviors. The program aims to provide higher education opportunities to those in prison, fostering growth, healing, and rehabilitation. The students, who shared their complex life stories through assignments like sociological autobiographies, demonstrate the diverse backgrounds and challenges faced by individuals in the criminal justice system. The article emphasizes the importance of understanding the complexity of individuals behind bars, acknowledging their humanity, dreams, and potential for positive change. The incarcerated students participated in a full liberal arts curriculum, highlighting their academic capabilities and resilience.   STORY 5: This lawsuit has the NCAA staring down extinction. Is that a bad thing? The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is facing a potential class-action lawsuit from current and former athletes seeking $1.4 billion in damages for violating antitrust laws by restricting compensation for the use of athletes' "names, images, and likenesses" (NIL). The NCAA argues that such damages could force the curtailing of college sports programs across the country and has appealed the case. This legal battle comes amid a broader shift in policies surrounding college athletes' compensation, with increased focus on the athletes' earning rights, particularly in the context of NIL endorsements. The NCAA's longstanding amateurism model is under scrutiny as the landscape of college sports evolves.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: TOM WAGES – JACKSON EMC Story 6: ANGIE CLAWSON SALVATION ARMY And now, here is Keith Ippolito's conversation with Angie Clawson from the Salvation Army. Break: ESOG – INGLES 8 STORY 7: 30-year mortgage rates keep falling, move below 7.5% The average rate on 30-year fixed mortgages decreased to 7.41%, down from 7.55% the previous week, according to Bankrate's weekly national survey. This drop may signal a prolonged decline in mortgage rates, influenced by factors such as a slowing job market and signs that the Federal Reserve's efforts to combat inflation are effective. Mortgage rates are also impacted by factors like decreased mortgage applications and lenders vying for a shrinking pool of applicants. The Federal Reserve's decision to pause interest rate hikes contributes to the shift in mortgage rates. Economists anticipate a further decrease in mortgage rates, potentially falling below 7% during the winter months.   STORY 8: Gov. Brian Kemp's chief of staff moving to Georgia Power Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's chief of staff, Trey Kilpatrick, is set to join Georgia Power as senior vice president of external affairs from January 15. Kilpatrick, who served as chief of staff since 2020, has experience working with the late U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson and an Atlanta-based investment firm. Georgia Power's CEO, Kim Greene, expressed Kilpatrick's dedication to Georgia's growth and well-being. Lauren Curry, Kemp's deputy chief of staff, will succeed Kilpatrick as chief of staff, marking the first female in this role in Georgia's history, while Brad Bohannon will become the deputy chief of staff.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: Henssler 60 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. As the chief diversity and inclusion officer at Rady Children's Hospital, Nancy Moldonado provides vision, leadership, and direction within the executive and hospital operations teams. She is also focused on initiatives to support diversity, equity, and inclusion across the health system.   Nancy is also a single parent who has been recognized as one of the city's most inspirational women in San Diego Magazine, Businesswoman of the Year in the San Diego Business Journal, and has garnered various other awards and accolades.   On this episode of Not a Parenting Podcast, we spoke with Nancy about single parenting, being a first generation college graduate, and running multiple businesses. Read her Q&A below and listen to her episode now.   What makes San Diego such a special place to raise kids for you?   I love raising my son in San Diego for many reasons, one of which is our proximity to Mexico. We are fortunate to live in a binational, multicultural, transborder community with a long history of activism and community engagement.   Because it's so important to me that my son is exposed to different cultures, languages, identities, and experiences, I appreciate the Mexican influence and how it shapes San Diego's identity. My son and I also love outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking, and rock climbing, and you can't beat the beautiful San Diego weather and our access to nature.   What are the greatest joys and challenges of balancing family and a career?   I am blessed to be able to work in a career I love and raise my son, Dominic, whom I adore. So often, we hear that we need to compromise or sacrifice and that it must be one or the other. My challenge when it comes to balancing motherhood and my career is to accommodate versus compromise.   When the opportunity presents itself, I think about how I can create new, innovative ideas where I don't have to sacrifice anything. One of those strategies is to involve Dominic in my work. I enjoy involving him in my career. From a very young age, he has been by my side as I attended community events, gave speeches in rooms full of people, or led team functions. I find joy in sharing my career with him and helping him understand the why behind my chosen path.   What part of your job makes you feel the most fulfilled or alive?   I feel so fortunate to be the inaugural chief diversity and inclusion officer for Rady Children's Hospital because of how vital the organization is to our entire region and beyond. Rady's does fantastic work and serves so many children and families. I am motivated by the fact that we are genuinely dedicated to ensuring that every patient receives the highest quality, equitable care. One of the aspects I love most about my job is that I work on the campus and have the opportunity to talk to and interact with our incredible team and patients.   Hearing directly from patients and families brings home the work we all do every single day and the fact that no matter what anyone's role is at Rady, it has a tremendous impact. Knowing that I play a part in that is very fulfilling.   Anything else you would love for our audience to know about you?   I find it helpful to remind myself that I do not have to “do it all” to consider myself successful. While every day I have every intention of being great, some days, all I can be is okay.

On this episode, I sit down with special guest, Meagan McBride, to discuss what it's like being a first generation college student and the challenges of transferring schools. We also provide advice on navigating college life and the "real world" post-graduation.A first generation college graduate is defined as a student whose parent(s) did not complete a four-year college or university degree.  This does not include extended members of the family, such as grandparents, aunt/uncles, etc.  Additionally, your parents may have attended some college courses, but they did not complete a degree, which would still classify you as a first generation college student based on certain institutions' definitions. Why is this important?According to the Center for First-Generation Student Success, "the term 'first-generation' implies the possibility that a student may lack the critical cultural capital necessary for college success because their parents did not attend college" Thus, having an understanding of the needs of first-generation college students allows the opportunity for institutions to come alongside these students and provide additional support so that they may be as successful as their peers and have a sense of belonging on campus.Read more about this topic at:Defining First-Generation by, Center for First-Generation Student Success: https://firstgen.naspa.org/blog/defining-first-generationFollow Meagan on Instagram: @meggyweggy406

Whether you think you have or lack the pedigree to be successful is a big topic amongst my career coaching clients. This conversation was such a pleasure because Alicia Jackson-Warren and I had a great dialogue that covered a myriad of ideas around someone’s pedigree in terms of academic credentials and we touched upon messages based on our cultural backgrounds. This is a ripe conversation for anyone who has felt overlooked, unseen, or even marginalized due to having gone to a community college, or not having worked for big name brands, or simply because you may have not felt as “fancy” as some of those working for the world’s most competitive Fortune 500 companies. Alicia and I share how you can market yourself and sell yourself for your resiliency, ability to think creatively, and rise up as the underdog we both love advocating for.   Alicia Jackson-Warren is the Program Director of Career Development and Internships at Prince George's Community College. Ms. Jackson-Warren has been employed at PGCC since 2006 and has worked in multiple roles including Adjunct Professor of Spanish, Retention Advisor, Interim Program Director of Student Support Services/TRIO, and Academic and Career Advisor. Ms. Jackson-Warren has received awards and recognition for exemplary service and leadership in student affairs and community involvement. She represented PGCC in her appearance on the News Channel 8 "Let's Talk Live" program.   Most notably, Ms. Jackson-Warren appeared on Good Morning Washington for the Guide to Launching a Successful Career segment. This interview garnered more than 30,000 likes on social media within one week following its posting. The segment continues to be viewed and circulated on social media. This segment also led to Ms. Jackson-Warren earning the Dare to Excel award from Prince George's Community College. Ms. Jackson-Warren is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and serves through Delta Zeta Zeta Chapter of Prince George's County, MD. Throughout her 30+ year membership, she has served in various leadership capacities in the sorority.   Currently, she chairs the Autism Awareness committee and is the 2020 Team Captain for the Autism Speaks Walk – Baltimore. Educational achievements include: Bachelor of Arts in Spanish (ODU); Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction and Certificate of College Teaching (George Mason University) Candidacy in the Doctor of Education Leadership program and pursuing her Educational Specialist in Leadership degree (American College of Education). This is such a great conversation for anyone who has felt like they had to prove themselves in pursuit of their upward mobility whether you are a first generation college grad or not. This is so shareable. Enjoy the candid conversation.   Highlights   Education Why did you decide to pursue a Phd? Pressure How does it feel to be a first generation college student and/or graduate? Obstacles The reality for plenty of community college students sometimes includes being teenagers taking on adult responsibilities in addition to getting an education. Supporting Others Here are some ideas on how to encourage each other as online learners and on how we can bring awareness to important topics so we can all make well-informed choices. Pedigree Self-belief vs. how others perceive you. Any stigmas around hiring 2-year community college grads? Ready We discuss the idea of staying ready so you don’t have to get ready in pursuit of upward mobility. How To Ask For Help Breaking-free from cultural messages and self-sufficiency norms (Latinos, People of Color) Fear Of Being Judged Learning how to value yourself and your efforts vs. caring about what others think Hiring A Community College Graduate What’s the value of bringing in someone unlike yourself to join your team especially now given the need for new thinking given the pandemic? Mindset What can’t I do vs. what can I do? Marketing Your Degree If your alma mater does not have a “brand” name then the onus is on you to master marketing yourself, here’s how. Life’s A Relay Race The notion of paying it forward regardless of your circumstances is discussed. Hope For Everyone’s Safety Call to action and hope on getting through this pandemic in the U.S. and beyond.
