Have you ever met anyone that's had a near death experience? During this week's episode, Fr. Joseph told me (Matt) about the experience one of the Diocese's own pastors. He died, experienced purgatory and judgement, but was given a second chance by Our Lord. This week, we discussed the Four Last Things; Death, Judgement, Hell, (Purgatory) and Heaven. We discussed not only near death experiences, but what Scripture, Tradition and the Mystics tell us of these experiences and places. St. Faustina's description of Hell is… terrifying. Truly “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). Simultaneously, as we seek to understand Heaven, it's… exciting! Perhaps, most importantly, we discuss the proper way to hope in Our Lord's mercy. Monsignor Charles Pope delivers a sobering warning: hell is real, and ignoring its existence is harming the Church. Drawing from Scripture, tradition, and his new book The Hell There Is, Msgr. Pope explains how false mercy, presumption, and a trivialized view of God have emptied parishes and robbed souls of salvation. God respects human freedom—even when it leads to eternal separation from Him. Heaven and hell are real, with degrees of reward and punishment. Be made clean.” The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. Then, warning him sternly, He dismissed him at once. Then He said to him, “See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.” The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to Him from everywhere. The Four Last Things – Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell The conference opens with the recitation of the Hail Mary. The closing words of this familiar prayer, “now and at the hour of our death,” provide a meaningful starting point for reflecting on The Four Last Things. In these simple words, we speak a profound truth: by praying for the hour of our death, we acknowledge a reality that extends beyond the present, a future beyond the limits of this moment. This recognition is crucial, for it challenges the idea that this world is all there is. By admitting the fragility of the present, we invite the intercession of Mary, not just for navigating this life as if it were the end-all, but for the moment when our earthly life concludes—when something beyond begins. This is Key to Our Human Experience This is key to our human experience. It reminds us of our dual nature in a world marked by sin: we are both perishable and imperishable. Our bodies age, and no matter how well we care for them, time eventually diminishes all physical things. Yet, we sense something within us that endures. In contemplating the four last things, we are engaging with something profoundly important. Time itself has a limit; it, too, will one day cease. Each of us feels this limit individually—our days on this earth are finite. No amount of health or medical advancement can extend our lives indefinitely. Death is the inevitable end of our earthly journey, underscoring the transient nature of life. So, the question arises: when that moment of death arrives, what lies beyond? What are we truly praying for when we say, “now and at the hour of our death”? Explore these questions, and more, in this audio media on: The Four Last Things – Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell. ------------------------------- Image: The Virgin of Carmen and the Souls of Purgatory with St. Joseph and the Prophet Elijah: Mexican Artist and Painter: Juan Francisco de Aguilera: 1720 This small painting on copper, made for individual devotion, depicts the Virgin of Carmen interceding on behalf of souls in purgatory.

Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - Mt 20:1-16 - Jesus told his disciples this parable: "The Kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.' So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and around three o'clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o'clock, he found others standing around, and said to them, 'Why do you stand here idle all day?' They answered, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard.' When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.' When those who had started about five o'clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, 'These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's burden and the heat.' He said to one of them in reply, 'My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?' Therefore, what God has joined together, man must not separate." They said to Him, "Then why did Moses command that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss her?" He said to them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery." His disciples said to Him, "If that is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry." He answered, "Not all can accept this word, but only those to whom that is granted. They replied, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. And He was transfigured before them,  and His clothes became dazzling white,  such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.  Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses,  and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,  “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents:  one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them;  from the cloud came a voice,  “This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, He charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves,  questioning what rising from the dead meant. Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord O Jesus, have mercy upon us! Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - Mt 13:54-58 - Jesus came to His native place and taught the people in their synagogue. They were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is He not the carpenter's son? Is not His mother named Mary and His brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? Are not His sisters all with us? Where did this Man get all this?” And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house.” And He did not work many mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith. Saint Ephrem the Syrian said, “We give glory to you, Lord, who raised up your cross to span the jaws of death like a bridge by which souls might pass from the region of the dead to the land of the living.” The cross is the bridge from death to life, from Hell to Heaven, from the judgment we deserve to the grace we can never deserve, from eternal captivity to the self to eternal freedom in God. With that in mind, during this Holy Week, it seemed appropriate to rebroadcast a conversation with theologian Dr. Kent Lasnoski about the four last things.
