It's been said so many times that it's become cliché…that music is a universal language, that it is one of the only things that unites people across cultural, physical, and socio-political dividing lines. Even so, a lot of bands seem shy away from addressing issues with their music for fear of alienating fans who may disagree with their beliefs, especially early in their careers. Bruce Springsteen can afford to lose a few people by taking a stand on something potentially polarizing, but for a young band in today's hyper competitive wild west of a music industry, singing about stuff that matters represents an added risk to their financial success…or does it?As you are about to find out, Nashville's Friendship Commanders is finding an audience by making music that matters. You will not find any party anthems in the impressive catalog of music they've released in the 8 years they've been together. Instead, they choose to tackle issues like sexism, abuse, alienation, gas-lighting, objectification, racism, police brutality…, just to name a few. But what's unique about Friendship Commanders' approach is that Friendship Commanders' brand of ideological confrontation feels INCLUSIVE. I caught up with chief songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist, Buick Audra, and drummer Jerry Roe to learn more about their journey as artists, and what it's like to stand for something meaningful in today's crowded musical landscape. Buick Audra is a Grammy-award-winning musician, writer, and activist living in Nashville. She is the guitarist, primary songwriter and vocalist in the melodic heavy duo, Friendship Commanders. She has a forthcoming full-length album called Conversations with My Other Voice, as well as an accompanying memoir. Not only is her music filled with courage, clarity and fire, but she is hilarious and helped us name the grocery bag in which you keep other grocery bags. FYI, it is now called a Monty.

Joining us this week is Buick Audra, a Grammy award winning musician, writer, and activist living in Nashville, TN. She is the guitarist, primary songwriter and vocalist in the melodic heavy duo, Friendship Commanders. The band recently released four singles “Stone Child” and “Your Reign is Over” last year to mark Indigenous Peoples Day, and most recently “Altar” and “Land of Men” . We caught up while she was on tour supporting these singles and en route to recording their third LP at God City with Kurt Ballou. In addition to discussing the singles at length, we dive into sources of inspiration for Buick's activism, the importance of elevating voices of those fighting for social justice and protest songs. My guests today are Buick Audra and Jerry Roe of Friendship Commanders, a heavy duo from Nashville TN. Their new EP - HOLD ON TO YOURSELF released in April of  2020  follows their second LP, BILL, which they made with Steve Albini Electrical Audio. HOLD ON TO YOURSELF was tracked between Fort Knockout and Sound Emporium studios in Nashville TN. It was mixed by Kurt Ballou at GodCity in Salem MA and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege in Portland OR. In this body of songs, Friendship Commanders examines the world around them, their part in the problems and potential solutions, and even challenges the patriarchy. The release also gets personal and discusses what it looks like to be an adult who survived childhood trauma.  The band’s primary songwriter, Buick Audra, is an abuse survivor and has chosen to dedicate this work to other survivors. Her outgoing message is summarized in the EP’s title. The phrase has been a personal mantra for Audra; she has a habit of writing it down every morning as a reminder. Buick and Jerry record and self produce their music and have created an immediately classic heavy punk rock sound. I’ve known Buick for years playing in other band settings and when I heard this record I knew we would want to learn more from Buick and Jerry about the process of writing, capturing, mixing, and mastering such a powerful sound.   Thanks to our sponsors! I sat down with Buick Audra and Jerry Roe from Friendship Commanders in the sunny kitchen of their Nashville home. I first saw Friendship Commanders when our bands played together earlier this summer. I have been a devoted fan ever since. Both Buick and Jerry survived difficult, unusual childhoods and found each other as adults. Together they have created an artistic and romantic partnership of mutual trust and protection. We talked about surviving and thriving, recording with Steve Albini, the travails of touring, and life on the road as a couple. Jerry Roe has literally been drumming his entire life.  Given his first drum set at 18 months old, he doesn't have any memories of life before drumming.  Jerry comes from a very talented musical family and started playing the Nashville bars by age 11.  On episode 059, Jerry sits down with Jamie to discuss his early start, his long list of studio credits, and his awesome band, Friendship Commanders.  Equally comfortable playing tender Americana ballads as well as pounding sludge-metal, Jerry is a case study in versatility.  His playing is always tasteful and amazing.  Jerry offers up tons of great knowledge and inspiration in this great interview.
