Forget New Hampshire's Dixville Notch. The first votes in November's 2024 election were cast in a Manhattan precinct that met inside a jury room. The jurors had one thing on their mind: Voting against Donald Trump for President. Nothing else mattered. Welcome to La La Land. A place so weird there are no adjectives to describe it. We are inclined to say that America has become a third world nation, but that would not be fair to third world nations. America has become something worse than a corrupt, backward jungle country. Conspiracy in Canton: Episode 4 - Fighting For Technology Anyone who has spent any time watching true crime can tell you technology is one of the primary ways law enforcement agencies are able to solve crimes. Location data, surveillance videos, call records, even health apps are all just one subpoena away from providing authorities with a second by second timeline of your every move. Witnesses may be unreliable, but data doesn't lie. There have been a lot of things we've talked about so far that have raised some questions throughout the initial phases of this investigation. Like everything else involved here, there are issues. There seem to be roadblocks at every corner for the defense when it comes to getting the data and records they are requesting. In this episode, we take a look at the struggle for the technology footprint. The controversial case of Karen Read gets more interesting as we take a look at the searches done following John's death. One of the largest blizzards in Boston history was moving in, causing less than ideal conditions for a search. The first search, with only a couple of inches of snowfall on the ground and daylight working in their favor, turned up broken cocktail glass pieces and 6 drops of frozen blood. SERT team comes in 12 hours later, after 2 feet of snow has fallen and the sun has set, and they suddenly find pieces of Karen's tail light AND John's missing shoe. Is this coincidence? Or conspiracy? Please Note: All content including the presentation thereof on this channel is the property of 13th Juror and protected by U.S. and international copyright laws. The Controversial case of Karen Read continues to get more and more complicated. With a wild pre-trial hearing held last week that resulted in the crowd actually breaking out into applause, preceded by Free Karen Read protests held on the courthouse steps, each day brings a new unprecedented level of shock as we watch it unfold in real time. Episode one was an introduction to the case, and episode two serves as your introduction to the investigation. Join in as we take a look at the original statements from the parties and witnesses involved. Why does the list of who was there keep changing? Why are there so many errors and discrepancies on court documents? And how did the commonwealth develop their theory, when so many original statements seem to contradict their claim? Join in as we walk through the timeline of January 28th-29th, and as we question EVERYTHING. It's one of the most polarizing cases in true crime right now. A 16 year veteran of the Boston Police Department, left to die in one of the biggest blizzards in Massachusetts history. Prosecution has charged his girlfriend, 42 year old Karen Read, with his murder, claiming she hit him with her car during a fight and left him to die in the cold. The defense says Read is being framed, set up to take the fall by one of the most powerful families in this Boston suburb- all to protect one of their own. There are discrepancies in statements, missing camera footage, and deep family ties to everyone from the lead investigator, to the attorney general's office, to the judge. With every new piece of evidence, a new controversy arises. In episode one, we will do an introduction to this case, paying attention to the timeline and the immediate discrepancies in statements and court documents. We will look at the theories presented by both sides, along with the evidence that supports and contradicts it. We will dig into what it is about this case that has social media so split, and why each side is so passionate in their beliefs. During this season, we will take a deep dive into the evidence- one controversial piece at a time- analyzing both sides in hopes of discovering the truth, and finally seeing justice for John O'Keefe. What should you expect with you get summoned to serve? And should you embrace this particular opportunity to participate in the democratic process? (Spoiler alert: We really think you should!)Our guest is Sonali Chakravarti, professor of government at Wesleyan University and author of Radical Enfranchisement in the Jury Room and Public Life.Love the podcast? Juries have been at the center of some of the most emotionally charged moments of political life, especially in high profile cases like the trial of Derek Chauvin for George Floyd's murder in 2021. This week, we explore juries as a democratic institution. Our guest, Sonali Chakravarti, argues that juries provide an important site for democratic action by citizens and that their use should be revived. She says juries could be a forward-looking institution that nurtures the best democratic instincts of citizens like examining their own perceptions and biases and engaging in dialogue and deliberation. Chakravarti is a professor of government at Wesleyan University and the author of Radical Enfranchisement in the Jury Room and Public Life , published by the University of Chicago Press in 2020. Her work focuses on public participation in legal institutions and the relationship between law and politics. It's the trial Australia had been waiting for since that interview with The Project's Lisa Wilkinson back in 2021, what would be the outcome of the allegations that a young women, Brittany Higgins, was raped in parliament house. A 6 week trial turned into 12 days of evidence, which then turned into nearly a week of jury deliberation until the bombshell yesterday that the jury had been discharged due to misconduct. Today we go through the trial of Bruce Lehrmann and find out exactly what went down in that jury room for them to now have to go through the whole thing again. When you are a criminal defense attorney and you have always wanted to sit on a jury but are never selected because of what you do, you get excited when you find out a family member got to sit on a jury. Being a criminal defense attorney and having had a father who was law enforcement you also cannot wait to hear about what happens with a jury while a case is going on and what they really do during jury deliberations. In this episode we welcome Ann's sister Mary Kate Thayer (also known as MK) and her dog Rooney (named after one of the Steelers owners) on to the show to tell us about her recent experience serving on a criminal jury in Virginia.LEGAL DISCLAIMER:If you are listening to this podcast, thank you! For this episode, I want to revisit two missing persons cases that have just recently had their anniversaries. The case of Suzanne Streeter, Stacy McCall, and Sherrill Levitt has haunted the once quiet, sleepy town of Springfield, MO for 30 years. On June 6, 1992, Suzanne and Stacy became Kickapoo High School graduates. They'd spend that evening celebrating with friends at several different graduation parties. The two childhood friends would retire to Suzie's and her mother, Sherrill's, home on E Delmar St. The next day, June 7th, the three women would be reported missing. If you have any information regarding Stacy McCall, Suzanne Streeter, or Sherrill Levitt's whereabouts or disappearance, please contact the Springfield, MO Police Department or Springfield Crimestoppers. ---On July 10, 2015, 2 year old DeOrr Kunz Jr was out on a fishing trip with his family at Timber Creek Campground in Idaho. He'd been left with his great-grandfather at their campsite while his parents went off on their own. When they'd return, baby DeOrr was nowhere to be found. If you have any information regarding DeOrr Kunz Jr's whereabouts or disappearance, please contact the Lemhi County Sherriff's Department. Helen Anderson and Danni Howard finish the series with a killer of enormous proportions… literally. At a staggering height of 6”7, ‘Big Ed' is one of the most violent and messed up killers of the century. After murdering his grandparents aged just 15 years old, Edmund went on to kill dozens of University students before exacting revenge on his estranged mother in one of the worst ways imaginable. Expect sinister beginnings, another tale of reformation gone seriously wrong, and one of the most gruesome ends Helen and Danni have ever seen. Unfortunately, we ran into some technical difficulties this week, i.e. our audio crapped out on us and the two-hour heist episode we had recorded is lost to time.. Luckily Kevin from the Jury Room Podcast was kind enough to share an episode of his with us so you all would have something to listen to while we re-record the next heist episode this week. Def give his show a listen and support this amazing person who always looks out for us! suicide Prevention 1-800-273-8255 The Jury Room Links https://www.patreon.com/juryroompodcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/Juryroompodcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-jury-room-a-true-crime-podcast/id1536341829 Sources Heaven's Gate: The Cult of Cults- 4-part HBO docuseries Bounded Choice by Janja Lalich https://www.rollingstone.com/feature/heavens-gate-20-years-later-10-things-you-didnt-know-114563/ - https://www.biography.com/crime-figure/marshall-herff-applewhite https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/heavens-gate-cult-members-found-dead https://www.nytimes.com/1997/09/28/magazine/technology-makes-us-escapist-the-cult-of-the-mind.html https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1997/03/29/353221.html?pageNumber=9 https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20151120-heavens-gate-from-hollywood-disaster-to-masterpiece https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1997/03/30/the-cult-that-left-as-it-lived/1e9baadb-f465-4a7a-8026-0ab7e4822139/ https://www.nytimes.com/1997/04/28/us/eyes-on-glory-pied-pipers-of-heaven-s-gate.html?sec=health&pagewanted=1 https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/overthinking-tv/202012/nxivm-and-heavens-gate-cults-used-common-persuasion-methods https://www.oxygen.com/deadly-cults/crime-news/heavens-gate-cult-gail-maeder-victim-in-mass-suicide https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heaven%27s_Gate_(religious_group) - General facts and timeline https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1997/04/03/outside-heavens-gate-a-mothers-vigil-ends/a160145f-a8c7-42a0-b9a0-708c4f47bdc8/ https://www.oregonlive.com/history/2017/12/how_oregon_shaped_heavens_gate.html https://www.newspapers.com/image/316502751/?terms=Disappearances%20in%20Waldport%2C%20Oregon&match=1 https://www.newspapers.com/image/293863699/?terms=Disappearances%20in%20Waldport%2C%20Oregon&match=1 https://offbeatoregon.com/1606a.heavens-gate-ufo-cult-394.html https://web.archive.org/web/20130302021044/http://www.has.vcu.edu/wrs/profiles/Heaven'sGate.htm - Heaven's Gate Timeline https://www.nytimes.com/1997/04/02/us/former-cultists-warn-of-believers-now-adrift.html https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1997-03-30-mn-43687-story.html https://u.osu.edu/vanzandt/2019/04/03/humanitys-next-step-and-heavens-gate/ https://www.heavensgate.com/book/2-5.htm - the 17 Steps https://people.com/crime/heavens-gate-22-years-later-remembering-lives-lost/ https://earthsky.org/space/this-date-in-science-comet-hale-bopp/

In this episode, Kevin (from The Jury Room) and I go through the case of Sharon Lopatka. One woman scoured BDSM chatrooms looking for someone to agree to take her life. Robert Glass was willing to make her fantasy a reality. This is a case of consensual homicide and the issues surrounding BDSM.Patreon | Socials | ContactPatreon.com/ReverieTrueCrimeTwitter.com/ReverieCrimePodInstagram.com/ReverieTrueCrimeFacebook.com/ReverieTrueCrimeReverieTrueCrime.Tumblr.comReverieTrueCrime@gmail.comhttps://reverietruecrime.wixsite.com/podcastSubmit a topic/case suggestion: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfpGpqkMAwadI5NoJfGAINUTw004if5ycDNhFrRWxf-L2GttQ/viewform SOURCES:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Sharon_Lopatka https://popculturecrime.medium.com/sharon-lopatka-and-autassassinophilia-5341b5a898f9 https://alchetron.com/Consensual-homicide https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1996/10/30/slain-womans-e-mail-reveals-violent-intentions/d941faa0-4d6a-4aa5-9add-bfd1813e2f9b/ https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xpm-1996-11-01-1996306055-story.html https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/news-life/wifes-secret-double-life-led-to-her-bizarre-killing/news-story/badae31d0ce0e33a6d42f5d3a7769e24 https://www.dailydot.com/unclick/internet-assisted-suicide-sharon-lopatka/ https://www.eyerys.com/articles/timeline/sharon-lopatka-and-first-case-where-murderer-was-caught-evidence-emails#event-a-href-articles-timeline-vin-diesel-instagram-post-that-made-dwayne-johnson-very-surprisedvin-diesel039-s-instagram-post-that-made-dwayne-johnson-039-very-surprised039-a https://www.tuko.co.ke/426808-sharon-lopatka-story-robert-glass-emails-happened-autassassinophilia.html https://rollneck54.rssing.com/chan-23972782/article282.html https://apnews.com/article/09344cb4d672f32987edb41c159d7ebb
