The Ideas of March is March 15, a day in the Roman calendar that became infamous for the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. Jacob Sider Jost, Associate Professor of English at Dickinson College, joined The Spark to share more about the Ides of March. Where did the phrase, beware the Ides of March, where did that come from? "Beware the Ides of March is a line from Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar… And so, Shakespeare wrote, he wasn't the first to write a tragedy on this topic, but he wrote a tragedy about the assassination of Julius Caesar, and it's really two tragedies because it's the story of Caesar and his death, and then the sort of greatest conspirator Brutus, and then he dies at the end of the play." What was the reasons behind the plot to kill him? "Rome had for the couple of centuries up to the life of Caesar had been a Republic, and it had a Senate, and it had some things that sound a bit like modern American democracy, but it was basically an oligarchy, a powerful elite of inherited senators sort of dominated Roman political life. But it was unstable. There were power struggles through the first century BCE where individuals tried to sort of take full power in Rome. And when Julius Caesar came back to Rome in that fifth decade BCE, he had just defeated Pompey, who was another sort of general fighter. And it looked to the conspirators that Caesar was going to take over, become a single ruler just in himself, become an emperor, and abolish the republic. Now, in the end, that's what happened. His grandnephew Augustus Caesar took over, became emperor, and the Roman Empire went for hundreds of years after that. But that's what the conspirators were trying to prevent. They were trying to keep Rome a republic." Why do you think Julius Caesar’s assassination still captures people’s imaginations hundreds of years later? "It's been performed on multiple stages in multiple countries and has been with us for almost, you know, over 400 years. And so, the language of Shakespeare and the power of the story keep people coming back to Julius Caesar in the Ides of March." Listen to the podcast to hear the entire interview. **Beware the Ides of March - A Chilling Compilation**Step into the eerie shadows of "Weekly Spooky," where host Henrique Couto invites you to contemplate the haunting resonance of fate and retribution in this special compilation, "Beware the Ides of March." This captivating episode presents a chilling series of tales that intertwine themes of vengeance, remorse, and the sinister implications of choices made under duress. As the episode unfolds, listeners are treated to a narrative rich in suspense and dark twists that echo the famous cautionary adage, "Beware the Ides of March." Henrique sets the tone, urging you to dive deep into stories where characters grapple with the consequences of their actions in a wicked and unpredictable world. The compilation promises to chill you to the bone, highlighting the complexity of human morality, the pull of regret, and the tantalizing nature of revenge. Our first featured tale, **"Dead Ahead" by Joe Solmo,** introduces us to Becca and Tom, a couple caught in a harrowing accident that spirals into a dark descent of bad choices and supernatural consequences. As they struggle with the implications of their actions, the line between guilt and the supernatural blurs when the jogger they thought they buried returns from the grave to exact its revenge. The tension rises as Becca must confront not only the specter of their crime but also a reckoning with her own past. Next, **“Hell Hath No Fury” by Aaron Cook** draws us into the life of Zelda Mae Darling, a woman trapped in the confines of a disastrous marriage. As she navigates the complexities of love, betrayal, and the haunting effects of her choices, Zelda finds herself entwined in a web of chaos that ultimately leads to her desperate act of self-defense. The chilling twist reveals not only the cost of her actions but the consequences that echo long after her demise. The momentum continues with **“The Stop Sign Man” by Bryce Gibson,** which amplifies the familiar ritualistic urban legend surrounding a cursed stop sign that leads to untold consequences for a group of teenagers. As Stratton Duke celebrates his 17th birthday, the risks of youthful bravado intertwine with a sinister journey that cost him dearly, setting up a nail-biting exploration of innocence lost and the heavy price of recklessness. In this mesmerizing compilation, we are also treated to **“The Devil Reaps the Harvest” by John Oak Dalton** and **“Grave Consequences” by Killian Crane**, which expand on the dark depths of desperation, moral collapse, and the harrowing consequences of one's actions in life and death. Each tale builds on the overarching theme of justice—often delivered in a supernatural form—that awaits those who tread the line between right and wrong. Finally, **“Dead and Breakfast” by Morgan Moore** closes the episode with a breathless encounter that blends survival and horror in a twisted game of life and death at a seemingly benign bed-and-breakfast. The juxtaposition of warmth and terror unfolds, leading to a shocking climax that leaves listeners questioning the very nature of safety.

My band, Project Grand Slam, or PGS for short, has released 14 acclaimed albums and numerous singles, crossing multiple genres within Jazz and Rock. I pride myself on the variety of my music. So this episode is a short tour of PGS and a few of our Greatest Hits.“Spring Dance” is the title tune from our 2009 album. It heralds the beginning of springtime, one of the happiest and most anticipated times of the year. Spotify linkMy father was a trumpet player who loved Latin music, and PGS has always had wonderful Latin musicians. I wrote “The Queen's Carnival” to celebrate that Latin tradition. Link“Ma Petite Fleur” - My Little Flower - is a love song ballad. I gave it a French title just because I thought it fit. LinkIn 2015 I reorganized the band and included the first of several outstanding female singers. So I started writing vocal songs for them like “Redemption Road” featuring the exquisite Ziarra Washington. LinkOne of my musical signatures has been to include on each album a reimagined version of a hit from the 1960s, the era when I came of age musically. My first one was Jimi Hendrix's “Fire” sung by the incomparable Kat Robichaud of The Voice fame. LinkMy band has always been at the top of its game when playing live. Here's “Yeah Yeah” recorded live at a festival in Pennsylvania with the superb Marilyn Castillo on vocals. LinkOne of my greatest pleasures in doing the podcast are the musical collaborations that I've done with some of my World Class guests. Here are a few examples.“The Fall Of Winter” I co-wrote with the great Jim Peterik of The Ides Of March and formerly with Survivor. Elliott Randall of Steely Dan fame participated in this one too. Link“All Of The Time” is a gentle, whimsical love song. Tony Carey of Rainbow produced it and added a lovely organ part. Link“This Time”, from the album Bobby M and the Paisley Parade, features the great John Helliwell from Supertramp on sax. And me on the vocal. LinkI went back to my jazz roots with “The Gift”, a collaboration with Grammy winning arranger Michael Abene. He took my ballad and changed it into a big band Samba with me and my PGS bandmates as the rhythm section. LinkRecently I decided to return to my instrumental roots with “Sostice”, a single that I released last year. LinkAnd then most recently I took another single, “The Rich Ones”, and added 8 World Class musicians who had all been guests on the podcast and released a new extended version of the track called “The Rich Ones All Stars” which, I'm pleased to say, has been on fire on YouTube and Spotify. LinkSo there it is. A few of our Greatest Hits by me and my band, Project Grand Slam. I look forward to continuing to write, record and release new music via the podcast. As always, I want to thank you for listening to this podcast, and to my music. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. What better way to kick things off than where it all began? Here's a look back at episode one and our conversation with Jim Peterik. ABOUT JIM PETERIKSinger, songwriter, guitarist, and keyboardist Jim Peterik is best known as a founding member of the band Survivor and the co-writer of their Grammy-winning double platinum #1 hit single, “Eye of the Tiger.” But that's only the tip of the iceberg. Thirty-five of Jim's songs have appeared on the Billboard Pop chart, including seven Top 10 singles. His first major success came when his original band, Ides of March, took the Peterik-penned “Vehicle” to the #2 position on the Pop chart in 1970, spawning cover versions by Chet Baker and Shirley Bassey. After a stint as a solo artist with Epic Records, Jim formed Survivor in 1979, penning a string of hits for the band, including “I Can't Hold Back,” “High On You,” “The Search is Over,” “Burning Heart,” and “Is This Love.” While still writing hits for his own group, Jim forged a successful partnership with the members of 38 Special, co-writing classic songs, including “Rockin' Into the Night,” “Hold On Loosely,” and “Caught Up In You.” Widely respected as a top-notch collaborator, Jim has co-written successful songs with a number of artists, including the Beach Boys, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sammy Hagar, Cheap Trick, the Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Mindi Abair. The long list of those who have covered his compositions includes Paul Anka, Gloria Gaynor, Tony Orlando, Reba McEntire, Larry Gatlin, Blackhawk, and The Outlaws. He is the co-author, with Dave Austin, of Songwriting for Dummies.

Activists assemble outside the Stadium to celebrate Caesar when they're interrupted by Flavius and Murellus, who challenge them to honor not just one man but all the people who helped in the Movement. Once the group breaks up and moves on, Flavius tells Murellus to help him take down all the posters celebrating Caesar. Inside the stadium, Caesar and his entourage–including his closest friend, Antony, and his wife, Calphurnia–are enjoying the thrills of a drag race when they're interrupted by an old woman who warns Caesar to beware the “Ides of March”. Caesar dismisses the woman and tells his entourage to enjoy the race with him. Cassius and Brutus stay behind and share their honest feelings about Caesar. Cassius tells Brutus he thinks Caesar is weak, spurring Brutus to confess he's uneasy with the way things are going in Rome. As they return from the race, Caesar sees the two men talking and tells Antony he thinks Cassius is dangerous. Brutus pulls Caska aside and asks him for details about what took place at the race. Caska describes how Caesar refused the crown three times when it was offered to him, further endearing him to the crowd. Caska also describes how Caesar “fell down” and foamed at the mouth. Brutus suggests that Caesar must have the “falling sickness” (epilepsy). Cassius says Caesar is not like them. Caska goes on to describe how Flavius and Murellus were punished for pulling down placards and posters celebrating Caesar, warning Cassius and Brutus to watch how they treat him. After Brutus and Caska depart, Cassius muses to himself about how easily Brutus can be manipulated. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP.
