Geordie Rose said that his D-Wave quantum computers are able to summon a “Tsunami of Demons" or aliens that are the equivalent of the “Old Ones” spoken of by horror author H.P. Lovecraft. Additionally, the creator of D-Wave computers says that standing next to one is like standing at the altar of an alien God. These tools are pushing us ever so rapidly into creating, building, and what some tech leaders call “summoning” a race of super-intelligent AI.

Why can't large language models make us a cup of tea? Suzanne walks us through the answer to this question to illustrate the importance of developing embodied artificial intelligence. We chat about Geordie and Suzanne's working dynamic, how both robots and AI are essential to the factory of the future, how we might manufacture in outer space, and why it is critical to maintain hope and purpose in life. Geordie Rose and Suzanne Gildert are co-founders of Sanctuary AI - a company on a mission to create the world's first human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots. Prior to Sanctuary, Geordie founded D­-Wave, the world's first quantum computing company, and was the CEO of Kindred, the world's first robotics company to use reinforcement learning in a production environment. Before Sanctuary, Suzanne founded Kindred. The acquisition of Kindred by Ocado in November 2020 was the third-largest exit for a robotics company in Canadian history. While at DWave, Suzanne invented and implemented MAXCAT, the world's first game ever played against a quantum computer, worked on the world's first supervised classifier run on a quantum computer, and was the first person to control the motion of a robot using a quantum computer. Right now might be the golden age of humanoid general purpose robot development. Tesla, of course, is building the Optimus robot. Figure.ai is working on one as well, plus others like Chinese company Fourier Intelligence with the GR-1 Boston Dynamics, and Agility Robots. So is Sanctuary AI. Sanctuary says they're on a mission “to create the world's-first human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots.” They've recently released their 6th generation robot, called Phoenix, and have completed their first commercial deployment in March. Creator Kevin Parr's love of pop culture and nerd fandom was bred into him from an early age. His mother worked as a Computer Graphics Artist for EA Sports in the late 80's, and throughout his childhood he participated in endless tours of the gaming headquarters, and was even a child game tester from time-to-time. The leap from today’s narrow AI to a more general kind of intelligence seems likely to happen at some point in the next century. But no one knows exactly how: at the moment, AGI remains a significant technical and theoretical challenge, and expert opinion about what it will take to achieve it varies widely. Some think that scaling up existing paradigms — like deep learning and reinforcement learning — will be enough, but others think these approaches are going to fall short. Geordie Rose is one of them, and his voice is one that’s worth listening to: he has deep experience with hard tech, from founding D-Wave (the world’s first quantum computing company), to building Kindred Systems, a company pioneering applications of reinforcement learning in industry that was recently acquired for $350 million dollars. Geordie is now focused entirely on AGI. Through his current company, Sanctuary AI, he’s working on an exciting and unusual thesis. At the core of this thesis is the idea is that one of the easiest paths to AGI will be to build embodied systems: AIs with physical structures that can move around in the real world and interact directly with objects. Geordie joined me for this episode of the podcast to discuss his AGI thesis, as well as broader questions about AI safety and AI alignment.
