Doreen Caven was raised in a Catholic household in Nigeria, and she was a baby feminist even before she knew what the F-word meant. At an early age, she saw the role she was expected to fill, as a wife, a mother, submissive to men, and she wasn't having any of it. Doreen and her younger sister, also childfree, now live in Los Angeles and run The Girls Like Me, a wonderful platform which amplifies the voices of African women, who are too often left out of the narrative around feminism and female empowerment. She shares her thoughts on religion, patriarchy, and how to shake off strict gender roles and soar to success!Follow Doreen on Twitter @doreenglm and check out The Girls Like Me on Instagram at @thegirlslikemeThis episode is from the best of season 1 of We are Childfree. “Good Clean Fun" Bonnie Hayes moved to San Francisco from the San Joaquin Valley in the early '70s and it didn't take long for her to establish herself as a commanding musical presence. Her new wave band The Punts became Wild Combo, and they signed with Slash and put out the Good Clean Fun Record. Slash was about as cool as it got—they had Fear, The Germs, The Gun Club and The Blasters and Hayes was for sure one of the cool kids. Her song "Girls Like Me" was used in Valley Girl—and behind her Brand New Girl EP, she and the Wild Combo toured with Huey Lewis, whose guitarist was also Bonnie's brother Chris. Hayes finished the decade by being a part of Belinda Carlisle's band for her world tour and then Bonnie Raitt, in 1989 recorded two of her songs—"Love Letter" and "Have a Heart” for her massive Nick of Time album. In 1991 she was a part of Billy Idol's band for the almost two year Cradle of Love tour and along the way, her songs were recorded by Cher, Bette Midler, Natalie Cole, Adam Ant, Robert Cray and David Crosby. Not too shabby. She put a few more albums out, including Empty Sky and Love in the Ruins, and she taught at the Berklee College of Music, the Stanford Jazz Workshop, the REO Songwriting Retreat outside of Vancouver B.C, the ASCAP workshop in Los Angeles and at the WCS Conference at Foothill College. In 2013, Hayes became chair of the songwriting department at Berklee in Boston. A compelling and dynamic singer and an intuitive and brilliant songwriter, Bonnie Hayes is a fascinating and very cool person. In this conversation she talks to Alex about the physics of songwriting, her love of Liz Phair and why she decided to leave Berklee and then why she changed her mind and went back. Bonnie Hayes and the Wild Combo's Good Clean Fun has been remastered with 11 bonus tracks. www.blixa.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

I began acting at the age of 8 and made the change from stage to film as an actor in John Carpenter’s original “Halloween” as an extra. Some of my favorite character stage roles are Olive in the female version of the Odd Couple and Quiser in Steel Magnolias. I have won some awards for my work but still holding out for the award of working at the highest possible level in the industry. In 2006 my first full length feature film “The Goal” received numerous awards nationally and internationally as well as worldwide distribution. It made it to the walls of Blockbuster and was on Comcast, etc. I never attended film school or college because my family didn’t have the means and didn’t know how to help me, even though I was a straight A student. They thought it was a wasteful pipe dream at best, but it was my pipe dream after all, so I found a way to do my version of film school by making my first feature film, The Goal. It took 12 years having the story in my head but not knowing how to execute. I never thought to make a short film first. I just jumped all in at 46 years of age and continue to be at 60 years of age. Prior to making films as a teenager I would find a way to hang out at CBS studios and watch all the shows like Sonny & Cher, Carol Burnett and others being taped. I was fascinated by everyone and made it a point to learn people’s jobs. In 2008 I also lent my skills to make the award winning medical documentary “Dandy Kids” which I presented and screened before the United States Congress in Washington DC. The film helped change the way in which research dollars were appropriated to help families whose children are affected by Dandy Walker Syndrome. My second feature film “Spirit of Love, the Mike “Stinger” Glenn story” won Best Inspirational Family Film from The Inspirational Country Music Association Nashville in 2013 beating out Warner Bros and Paramount studio films. It made its way to Amazon Prime and Pureflix. My favorite film roles in front of the camera have been Nurse Tempero in Minds Eye, Coach Robyn in Spirit of Love and Jordan in Broken Ties. I am blessed to have had my body of work receive Denver’s Mayors award of “Excellence in the Arts” for Global Impact in 2013. I believe each time I make a film I get a new education which then allows me to share what I learned with others. I enjoy mentoring, helping and teaching others who share an interest in acting, filmmaking and storytelling. I figure we all have something that we don’t know what it is that we don’t know. I am an alumnus of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. Although it was just an eight week summer program, as that was all I could swing financially. It worked out perfectly. I learned valuable lessons in those 8 weeks that I’ve never forgotten. I am the founder of Film It Productions and I’m currently working on an epic WWII love story titled “The French American” in addition to two documentaries to empower women from all walks of life, which evolved out of my recent narrative short film called “The 24 Hour Intimate Position”. Its never a case of not having projects. Its always about finding the funds to make it happen. Any day on set or working on film projects collaborating is the icing on the cake. I can’t not do it. I’m blessed to create art that impacts and changes lives. Directors Statement -“Girls Like Me” music video The music video evolved from working on two films about women battling breast cancer. One titled The 24 Hour Intimate Position and the other is Courageous Warriors;Beauty from the Ashes. The films deal with diagnosis and survivors of women age 20-80. The song Girls Like Me was written for use in both films as a result of me hearing lyrics in my head. So I developed an idea and sent it over to my incredibly talented musician friends Timothy Buckman and Turi Aleta. Its an anthem for all women, whether battling the beast of cancer, or all the obstacles life can throw in our way. As women we are stronger together. It was clear from the beginning that I wanted to show traditional roles but also ones that break barriers.Proceeds from Downloads from this song go to directly help women fighting the ugly beast of breast cancer. Its a tribute to my Mother who lost her battle at the age of 60 to breast cancer. She was a Courageous, Valiant, Warrior. She was my hero.” This is @Joshua T Berglan’s Gratitude:UnFiltered..

Girls Like Me, Inc. was birthed by founder Elisa Wiah in 2007 as an online magazine (and later a mentoring program) while she was still in high school. She wanted to create a place online for girls like herself (young, hopeful, determined, shaped by tough life experiences, morally conscious), ran by girls like herself. The online magazine and mentoring program has endured changes, transitions, and opposition over the years. However, the mission to provide a place for girls to be themselves, to ask for help, to communicate with one another, to dream, and to create the lives they want has always remained.
