Roughly a year ago, a team at The New York Times Magazine set about tackling a nearly impossible task: creating a list of the greatest living American songwriters. But how to take the tens of thousands of songwriters working in this country and narrow them down to a digestible list? The answer involved thousands of voting ballots, hundreds of music industry insiders and a series of closed-door meetings among a small group of music experts. The result, The Times's list of the 30 greatest living American songwriters, was published this week. Today, Michael Barbaro talks with Sasha Weiss, a deputy editor of The Times Magazine, who oversaw the project, as well as Joe Coscarelli and Jody Rosen, two members of the cadre of critics assigned with compiling the final list. They discuss the list-making process, what defines a great songwriter and why Billy Joel didn't make the final cut. We also hear from some of the songwriters featured on the list, including Taylor Swift, Nile Rodgers and the songwriting team of Brandy Clark, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne. On Today's Episode: Sasha Weiss is a deputy editor of The New York Times Magazine. Joe Coscarelli is a culture reporter for The Times. He is a co-host of “Popcast,” a producer of the “Song of the Week” video series and the author of “Rap Capital: An Atlanta Story.” Jody Rosen is a contributing writer for the magazine and the author of “Two Wheels Good: The History and Mystery of the Bicycle.” Background Reading: The 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters Cast Your Vote for the Greatest Living American Songwriters Photo credit: Stefan Ruiz for The New York Times Subscribe today at nytimes.com/podcasts or on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. It's Monday, April 20th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Russia strikes Ukrainian Baptist church killing pastor at prayer meeting Russia struck a Baptist church in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia during a prayer meeting, killing at least one person, a minister, and injuring at least eight others, reports The Christian Post. The Embassy of Ukraine in the U.S. gave the casualty figures in a public statement issued while rescue workers were still on the scene, identifying the targeted building as The House of the Gospel Church, which had served the community for years, according to the Baptist Press. The embassy called the strike a deliberate attack on people of faith who had gathered peacefully to pray. Promoters of a documentary series entitled “A Faith Under Siege” on Russia's persecution of Christians, identified the man killed as Ruslan Utyuzh, a minister at the bombed church. Utyuzh is survived by his wife and two children. Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.” Despite the attack, the congregation held services as normal the following morning with a large turnout, and 200 people came forward to be baptized. Iran reverses course on reopening Strait of Hormuz President Donald Trump said Iran "can't blackmail us" after the country announced they were reimposing restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday morning, reports Fox News. He added, "We have very good conversations going on. It's working out very well. They got a little cute, as they have been doing for 47 years, and nobody ever took them on. We took them on. They have no Navy. They have no Air Force. They have no leaders. They have no nothing. … It is regime change." Despite Iran wanting to close the strait again, Trump said in the Oval Office that negotiations are "going actually along very well." Trump also cited how oil tankers are now coming to U.S. ports to fuel up, including in Texas and Louisiana. President Trump said, "We're taking a tough stand. They've killed a lot of people. A lot of our people have been killed. A lot of your fellow soldiers have been killed over the years by Iran.” He cited how he ordered the strike that killed Qasem Soleimani, the commander of Iran's elite Quds Force, in January 2020. Trump described Soleimani as the "father of the roadside bomb." He explained, "When you see soldiers with no legs, with no arms or face that's been smashed, that was Soleimani, it was Iran that did that. So we have a much different view on it than other presidents. They've gotten away with murder for 47 years. They're not getting away with it anymore." While Iran wants to keep enriched uranium, Trump won't allow that Iran had sought an agreement allowing them to “down-blend” their enriched uranium. According to Axios, “A top priority for the Trump administration is ensuring Iran can't access the stockpile of nearly 4,400 pounds of enriched uranium buried in its underground nuclear facilities, in particular the 992 pounds enriched to 60% purity.” The Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation noted that most commercial nuclear power plants use 3 to 5 percent enriched uranium compared to 90 percent enriched uranium for nuclear weapons. Before the outbreak of the war, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff told Fox News that in March, Iranian negotiators boasted to him that they had enough enriched uranium to build 11 nuclear weapons. He explained that the Iranian negotiators apparently said “they had the inalienable right to enrich all their nuclear fuel that they possessed. We, of course, responded that the president feels we have the inalienable right to stop you dead in your tracks.” The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz initiated last Monday was costing Iran up to $435 million a day, including $276 million in lost exports. The blockade, coupled with weeks of air strikes from the U.S. and Israel, which devastated Iran's steel and petrochemical facilities, has the country's economy on the brink of collapse. Homosexual “dads” mock their surrogate-born baby for crying “mama” A homosexual male couple has triggered outrage across the internet after posting a video of themselves mocking their surrogate-born baby for crying “mama,” reports LifeSiteNews.com. Country music singer and songwriter Shane McAnally, a homosexual, posted the video of his faux “husband” Michael Baum lying on a couch, playfully bouncing the baby on his stomach as he asks, “Who do you want, Dada or Pop?” BAUM: “Who do you want Dada or Pop?” BABY: “Mama, ma.” BAUM: “Do you want Dada or Pop?” BABY: (fusses) BAUM: “Who do you want? Dada or Pop?” BABY: “Mom.” BAUM: ”Nope. Do you want dada? You want pop? BABY: “Mom.” BAUM: “No way, Jose. There is no mama.” BABY: (starts crying) BAUM: “So sorry. You have Dada and Pop.” McANALLY: “Two choices.” BABY: (cries more) BAUM: “No Mama.” Oddly enough, they posted that video on line. Officials with Surrogacy Concern, an organization that seeks to end the evils of surrogacy, wondered, “Who films their child crying and uploads it to the internet? And who subjects a child to their pathetic vanity like this? Babies need their birth mothers.” And children's rights activist Chris Elston, better known as “Billboard Chris,” wrote, “These men laugh as the baby cries and says ‘ma ma ma.' They think it's funny because ‘there is no mama,' This baby was designed to never have a mother so that two men could satisfy their selfish desires. It's impossible for a normal person to watch this without instinctual disgust.” In Matthew 19:4-5, Jesus asked, ““Haven't you read, that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,' and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?” Anniversary of death of Martin Luther's aid who translated Bible And finally, on April 20, 1558, Johannes Bugenhagen, the prominent Lutheran reformer and pastor who helped Martin Luther translate the Bible, died. He said, ““The church is not a place but a people, gathered by the Word of God and sustained by faith.” Bugenhagen also explained that “True worship is not found in outward ceremonies, but in a heart that trusts in God's grace.” The Lutheran reformer introduced the Protestant Reformation in the Duchy of Pomerania and Denmark in the 16th century. After the death of Luther in 1546, Bugenhagen kindly took care of Luther's widow, Katharina von Bora, and Luther's children. Proverbs 21:21 says, “Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, April 20th, in the year of our Lord 2026. Send us a textIn this episode, I talk with singer/songwriter Kylie Rothfield. She shares what she learned about singing and stage fright from Alicia Keys. Although her vocal ability is undeniable, she is also an accomplished self-taught guitarist, sponsored by Epiphone guitars and fully capable of supporting her captivating live show as a solo acoustic performer or with a full band. Together, they had 5 placements on national television in their first year together (NBC, E!, ABC, MTV).In September of 2016, Kylie was selected to be on The Voice (NBC). She was chosen by Alicia Keys, who coached her throughout the season, and carried her through to the Top 20 Live Shows in November. Her performance of "Hound Dog" in the knockout rounds garnered attention by many media outlets and was called the "dark-horse breakout performance of the season". Guest advisor Faith Hill said “Kylie absolutely blew me away. She interprets songs like a true artist and she could sing ANYTHING”She has over 1 million combined streams on Spotify & Apple Music from recent independent releases and was recently featured on NBC's Songland S2 (06/08/2020), working with Ester Dean, Ryan Tedder, and Shane McAnally to pitch a song she wrote to Tony and Grammy-winning artist Ben Platt. The 2017 album came six years after his full-length debut, Reason to Rhyme, announcing a promising talent in a bro-country vein, but boom. was fresh and fused modern R&B, contemporary country, hip-hop, and rock, announcing a distinctive talent. Hayes consolidated this breakthrough with the clever "Fancy Like," which reached number one on Billboard's Country charts in 2021, a hit that was the cornerstone of his third record, Country Stuff the Album.Hayes is a native of Mobile, Alabama. Born on December 27, 1979, he grew up in Mobile, dividing his time between music and sports as a child and teenager. He wound up earning a music degree from Alabama's Birmingham-Southern College, then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He and his wife moved to Nashville in 2005 with dreams of him becoming a professional musician. He signed a song publishing deal, and then, on the strength of a demo he recorded for Keith Urban, Hayes inked a deal with Mercury before quickly moving to Capitol Records. He released his debut single, "Pants," in 2010, which wound up reaching 60 on the Hot Country Songs chart. The full-length Reason to Rhyme followed in 2011, but it didn't chart. Over the next few years, Hayes worked as a songwriter, landing placements with Colt Ford and Rodney Atkins in 2014. Capitol dropped him, so he worked at Costco and continued to write, releasing the single "Pimpin' Joy" to little attention in 2014. Shane McAnally signed him to SMACK/RareSpark in 2016, leading him to release two EPs -- 8Tracks, Vol. 1: Good Shit and 8Tracks, Vol. 2: Break the Internet -- that year. Hayes landed a contract with Monument in 2017, which released "You Broke Up with Me" that year. www.GaryScottThomas.com

GRAMMY-nominated Nashville band Old Dominion has announced their anxiously awaited fourth full-length album, Time, Tequila & Therapy, will be released on October 8, 2021. To herald the record's arrival, the group shared a brand new song entitled “All I Know About Girls.”Backed by a bright acoustic guitar melody, this sweet and slick country bop builds towards a clever and catchy hook, “All I know about girls is the wide world ain't gonna spin without ‘em, but it'll spin around ‘em,”before an admission of sobering stone-cold truth, “All I know about girls is...I don't know nothing at all.”The band initially teased this chapter with their new hit single “I Was On A Boat That Day.”Eclipsing yet another benchmark, the song recently achieved the band's biggest radio impact date of their career. Right out of the gate, 132 stations added the song to rotation. As such, “I Was On A Boat That Day”was the second most added song of 2021. It has already gathered 20 million-plus streams and counting in addition to 2.2 million YouTube views on the music video. Sounds Like Nashville hailed it as “the up-tempo sand-bar anthem of the summer,”and Country Now promised the song “will quickly become the soundtrack to your summer.” Meanwhile, Rolling Stone applauded the tune's“appropriately buoyant rhythm and hum-along melodies.”Additionally, the guys took the stage at Good Morning America's Summer Concert Series to give the single its television debut(watch it HERE). “I Was On A Boat That Day”is available HERE. Watch the music video HERE.Time, Tequila & Therapy sees Old Dominion presenting13 tracks, where the boys survey the ups, downs, trials, and tribulations of life, love, and friendships while infusing their signature country sound with songwriting eloquence and arena rock ambition. The opener “Why Are You Still Here” glides along on organic percussion and piano as the song ponders what an ex is up to, “I don't want to know, but damn I want to know.”The upbeat “Hawaii”whisks Jimmy Buffet-style island bliss down south. Then, there's “No Hard Feelings” where the guys “took a little Time, Tequila & Therapy and threw it in a blender with ice”before intoxicating with another hummable hook. The “Empress of Soul” herself, Miss Gladys Knight, duets with Old Dominion on the Motown-by-way-of-Music-Row soul stunner “Lonely Side of Town.” The action all culminates with the bluesy guitar twang of the finale“Ain't Nothing Wrong With Love” as one final chant soars off to the heavens. Each band member—Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, Brad Tursi, Whit Sellers, and Geoff Sprung—notably participated in the songwriting alongside Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne. Tickets for the band's highly anticipated return to touring, “We Are Old Dominion” tour are on sale now and available. Teaming up with Indigo Road Entertainment, the group's first full-scale headline run since 2019 visits major markets and historic venues coast-to-coast 2021 is shaping up to be another milestone year for the guys. Recently, they took home the “Vocal Group of the Year”award at the 2021 Academy of Country Music Awards for the fourth consecutive time since 2018. Not to mention, they garnered their first career GRAMMY Award nominations. A standout from their chart-topping self-titled third studio album, “Some People Do” picked up nods in the categories of “Best Country Song” and “Best Country Duo/Group Performance.”

https://wittmbts3.godaddysites.com/ https://workflowy.com/s/social-media-for-wit/HfbK3lDslOAee3SM Sam Hunt had had the idea for the song stored away for some time. "I try to think of titles or lines that'll cross my mind and I'll put 'em in my phone, and this was one that I wanted to write for a while – the title 'Body Like a Back Road' – or use it as a lyric, do something with it," the Georgia native recalled. "I didn't have a melody, but one night this melody got stuck in my head and the phrase 'Body Like a Back Road' sang perfectly to it and the chorus came out pretty quick." Having come up a melody that fitted the title, Hunt started working on the song with producer Zach Crowell and a couple of writing buddies Josh Osborne and Shane McAnally in November of 2016. The quartet penned the bulk of the tune during a trip to Charleston, where they were hoping to work without the distractions of being in Nashville. Hunt recalled "I wanted to write it because I thought it was a fun song, but I didn't know for sure if I wanted to put it out. I didn't want it to come across as objectifying women or be too, to lack depth and just, I don't know. So, anyway, I had some concerns, but I tried to make it fun to offset any risks of those things happening, which made writing it fun, and I think that came across in the lyric and in the way we recorded it and everything else. When we finally finished it, it finally hit me as 'Ok. Wait a minute. Maybe I underestimated the potential of this song. I think this could be a fun song and it will connect with folks.' So, at that point, I was excited to put it out and fortunately folks have enjoyed it." --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wittmbtsofficial/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wittmbtsofficial/support

“Growing up, there was always a lot of other Chris’s everywhere,” Chris Lee told American Songwriter. “In classes and stuff people ended up just calling me ‘Chris Lee’ because it stood out.” Years later, Chris Lee — who now goes by ‘ChrisLee’ — is still standing out. On Monday night, Lee became the newest winner of NBC’s “Songland,” the show which features songwriters pitching their songs to a panel of celebrity ‘producers’ — Shane McAnally, Ryan Tedder and Ester Dean — and a guest artist. This week, the guest was the influential vocal group Boyz II Men, who actually made the unprecedented move to record all of the songs pitched to them. However, Lee’s song “Love Struck” still received special recognition as the winning song… which makes sense considering that it is a grooving pop number which feels perfectly situated for the glossy sound of Boyz II Men. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Lee has been writing songs since he was in elementary school. As a beautiful reminder of the importance of teachers — an especially powerful sentiment in today’s quarantine world — Lee cites his music teacher, Bob Berzack, as the person who spurred his life’s journey.

PART ONE: Scott and Paul chat about watching Cobra Kai, 80s nostalgia, and why bands are re-recording their classic hits for movies. They discuss why Brandy is the first guest to appear on Songcraft twice, and return to 80s movie sequel nostalgia yet again whereupon Paul floats his theory that Rocky III and Rocky IV are the Rubber Soul and Revolver of movies. Somewhere in there's it's decided that Brandy Clark is the Empire Strikes Back of Songcraft. PART TWO: Our in-depth conversation with six-time Grammy nominee Brandy ClarkABOUT BRANDY CLARKBrandy Clark has made a successful career writing songs for other artists, including The Band Perry’s #1 hit “Better Dig Two,” and Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart,” which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Country Song and CMA and ACM nominations for Song of the Year. As a critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter, her debut album, 12 Stories, earned her Grammy nominations in the categories of Best Country Album and Best New Artist, regardless of genre. The single “Hold My Hand” was nominated for Best Country Song. Her second album, the Grammy-nominated Big Day in a Small Town, was named one of the best albums of the year by Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly and American Songwriter, while the single “Love Can Go to Hell” earned Brandy yet another nomination for Best Country Solo Performance. The 20 year old HALIE moved from Thayer, MO to Nashville right after high school in 2018 and cites McBride as an early influence. “I grew up listening to Martina and 'This One's For The Girls' was one of my favorites,” said HALIE. “We wanted to write a song that girls can relate to in an honest way. I wanted them to know that it's ok to have insecurities. I'm so glad I get to deliver that message through Martina McBride.”
