This essay upon the Dollar appeared in NOW as one of a series of twelve lessons entitled, “Success and how I won it through Affirmation.” It attracted much attention and drew out from its readers many letters. This appreciation has decided “NOW” Folk to reprint it in form for a wider circulation. This well conserves the purpose for which it was written. I wish to awaken my fellows to a sense of their present possessions and help them to a realization of the Principle which controls Life's expression so that, living being to them “a fine art,” they will cease to look for happiness in some far-off heaven, but will enter into the enjoyment of the one they create here and now. It is believed that this little monograph is the first utterance of the thought that each individual has the ability so to radiate his mental forces that he can cause the Dollar to feel him, love him, seek him and thus draw, at will, all things needed for his unfoldment from the Universal Supply. It will help you to rise above the drudgery of enforced labor and enable you to enter upon the manifold expressions of life with the joy and spontaneity of childhood. This is the thought which comes to you with this, my Lesson of Success. HENRY HARRISON BROWN.San Francisco, Cal., May 1, 1903 The constant and increasing demand for this modest booklet and the beneficent effect which it has had on thousands of its readers, seem to justify its appearance in a new and enlarged form. May it have also a wider influence and an enlarged power to free the minds of its readers from the tyranny of things. HENRY HARRISON BROWN589 Haight Street, San Francisco, Cal., March, 1917 Henry Harrison Brown was one of the elder statesmen of the New Thought movement in the early part of the 20th Century. Born in Massachusetts in 1840, he served in the U. S. Volunteers during the Civil War from August, 1862, until October, 1865. In his varied career he taught school; worked upon newspapers; lectured in various fields for 17 years, and was 7 years a Unitarian minister. He entered the work of mental healing and teaching in 1893. He thus gained by experience that which he taught in his books. Brown was responsible for the publication of one of the most vigorous of the New Thought periodicals, Now, published in San Francisco, Cal., described in its subtitle as "a Monthly Journal of Positive Affirmations, devoted to Mental Science and the Art of Living." This magazine was established by Henry Harrison Brown, in 1900. Its basic affirmation was, "Man is spirit here and now, with all the possibilities of Divinity within him and he can consciously manifest these possibilities here and now." Henry Harrison Brown's published books include: Dollars Want Me: The New Road to Opulence; Concentration: The Road to Success; How to Control Fate Through Suggestion; The Six Steps in Mental Mastery: A Practical Treatise on the Realization of the Ideal; Success and How It Is Won Through Affirmation; Nor Hypnotism But Suggestion: A Lesson in Soul Culture; How to Control Fate Through Suggestion; Self Healing Through Suggestion; New Thought Means a Triumphant Democracy; The Call of the Twentieth Century; The Lord's Prayer: A Vision of Today; New Thought Primer: Origin, History and Principles of the Movement; Man's Greatest Discovery. He carried on writing and lecturing right up until his passing in 1918.
