In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the cuts that were made to the roster and how the camp has been divided in two groups. Group A appears to be the group that is going to be on the ice for game one of the regular season for the Capitals. Group B appears to be the group headed for Hershey at some point. A notable name on group A is Matthew Phillips. Matthew who played in the Calgary Wranglers last year had back to back season scoring 30 goals in the NHL and finished number 2 in the AHL in goals scored last season. He has played so well that he's getting a longer look in group A. How does the Caps blue line stack up with the rest of the NHL. Andrew Cristall and Antoine Keller are killing it. Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals
In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about three platers at Capitals rookie camp that have shown the most improvement. Hendrix Lapierre worked on his skating in the off season and hired a mental coach. In 60 regular-season games with Hershey, Lapierre had 15 goals and 15 assists. "I was more focused on just moving properly and speed and stuff like that. We knew that if I was only training for seven weeks, weightlifting, stuff, we didn't have much time to kind of go through the phases. So it was about moving properly, feeling good on the ice, whether it's hand-eye coordination or just my face-offs," Lapierre explained. "I think at the start, I was a little surprised of what we were doing. But as the summer kind of went on, I was like, ‘Okay, I'm suddenly feeling really, really good.' And then, I guess this is just like a continuation of what I've been doing, I try to do the same exercise in the gym too. So I guess maybe a little less like weightlifting and stuff like that, more". Later Dan talks about Alexander Suzdalev For the Regina Pats last season he lead his fellow freshmen in scoring in 2022-23. "He's a really smart player and you watch him shoot the puck out here today and he's got a really good shot, too, but it was a little bit light," Mahoney explained added. "[We wanted him to] get a little bit stronger, being able to be better in holding a position in front of the net for deflections or winning more puck battles in the corners, those sorts of things. He's always had the skating and the skill and the sense, but he was a little bit light, little bit thin. So strength was an issue for him." IN the last segment Dan talks about ANdrew Cristall was the 18-year-old, who was taken 40th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft Cristall hired a power skating coach to help his game. There's an extra step in his step and should help him with his speed and overall skating. In this episode, Hadi and Sebastian take a look at how both Connor Bedard and Adam Fantilli have performed at rookie camp and they debut a brand new recurring segment: Game on the Line. First, they unpack Connor Bedard's hat trick performance at rookie camp in his first game wearing the Blackhawks' jersey. Next, they shift their attention to 2023 3rd overall pick, Adam Fantilli, who also scored a hat trick in his first competitive game as a Blue Jacket, and discuss their expectations for his rookie season. Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals
In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the 13th annual National Hockey League Players' Association Rookie Showcase on September 5 at MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Virginia. The highlight of the event was the number one overall pick in this year's NHL draft Connor Bedard. Connor who had 71 goals and 143 points in just 57 games for Regina last season. Connor had some kind words for Alex Ovechkin and commented on Ovechkin's chase of Wayne Gretzky for all time goals scored: "I think he gets it. Two years I give him, but yeah, it's pretty crazy that he's scored that many goals," Bedard said. "I mean, just to kind of be watching it in the past couple years, obviously got 800, and then you know, passed Howe and everything, so it's just pretty cool to see. If he breaks it, it's special for the whole game." Late Dan talks about the well-attended informal skate today. Ovechkin joins Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson, Darcy Kuemper, Alex Alexeyev, T.J. Oshie, Dylan Strome, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nic Dowd, Joel Edmundson, Nick Jensen, Vincent Iorio, Andrew Cristall, Lucas Johansen, Joe Snively, Alexander Suzdalev, Alex Limoges were in attendance. In the 5th episode of the countdown to the very best prospect pool in the NHL, Sebastian breaks down the prospect pools of the Colorado Avalanche, Washington Capitals, and New Jersey Devils. The New York Rangers are heading into the 2023/2024 season as one of the favorites to not only win the Metropolitan Division but to win the Eastern Conference. They had a very disappointing loss in round 1 to the New Jersey Devils in the NHL Playoffs last season. There were some changes in the franchise since the series loss. They fired head coach Gerard Gallant and hired Peter Laviolette in the summer. Some of the roster changes include the additions of Blake Wheeler, Nick Bonino and Erik Gustafsson. The Rangers also had a good draft, being able to select Gabe Perrault with the 23rd overall. Can this quick retool help the Rangers finally get back to the Stanley Cup Finals and win their first Cup since 1994? Now the team on the other side of the island, the New York Islanders, also had an underwhelming season. They finished their season 42-31-9 in the Metro Division before being booted out of the playoffs in round 1, falling to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 in the series. After acquiring and signing Bo Horvat to a long-term deal at the NHL Trade Deadline, the Islanders really didn't have a lot of cap space to make any major outside-the-organization signings. They were able to re-up on big-time pending unrestricted free agents Pierre Engvall, Iyla Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov to nice contracts. There are still moves that need to be made to get the Isles back under the cap ceiling. Are these deals going to be good enough to make the Islanders a legit threat in the Metro Division? This next team is definitely going to be a wild card, no pun intended. The Washington Capitals are coming off one of their worst seasons in a long time. They finished 35-37-10 and placed sixth in the Metro. Many writers and media heads are starting to think this Washington team may be getting ready to rebuild. Now the Capitals entered this summer firing the now-Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette and replaced him with Spencer Carbery. Carbery, who was a coach in the Washington farm system before, is taking over after a short stint as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Similarly to the Islanders' roster, the Capitals are really tight to the salary cap. Washington may be closer to a rebuild for that reason, specifically. The only moves that the Caps were able to make are signing free agent Max Pacioretty, who's coming off a major Achilles injury, and signing winger Tom Wilson to a six-year extension through 2030-2031. The Capitals also had a great first two rounds of the NHL Entry Draft, selecting Ryan Leonard at pick eight and Andrew Cristall at pick 40. Even if this team is a bit older right now, the Capitals are setting to make the rebuild or retool quick and easy.

This year, the Washington Capitals' training camp will take place on Sept. 15, 2023. For most players, this won't be a problem. For Andrew Cristall, the Jewish rookie out of B.C., it will cause a slight conflict—Rosh HaShanah. It won't be the first time Cristall has to navigate his game around Jewish holidays, though. Last year, for Yom Kippur, he fasted until the sun went down, with just enough time to eat a pre-game meal before suiting up on Oct. 5, 2022. Shortly after being drafted to the Capitals, Cristall sat down with Menschwarmers host Gabe Pulver and The CJN Daily's Ellin Bessner. We're now airing the full, half-hour interview—alongside commentary from Gabe and his co-host, James Hirsh, on everything new in the world of Jews and sports, including the Gelof family's big week, Daniel Weinman winning the $12-million World Series of Poker, and whether the MLB's Cade Povich is Jewish. (The answer may surprise you!) Credits Menschwarmers is hosted by James Hirsh and Gabe Pulver, and produced and edited by Michael Fraiman. Only one Jewish rookie out of 244 was selected at the NHL 2023 draft, held from June 28-29: Andrew Cristall. If the surname sounds familiar, it's because the 18-year-old is the son of Alex and Jodi Cristall, leaders and philanthropists who are deeply involved in Vancouver's Jewish community. On July 7, Cristall signed his three-year, $2.85-million (USD) entry-level contract with Washington, after completing development camp and orientation in D.C. While he didn't get the chance to meet any of the team's current players—including superstar captain Alexander Ovechkin, who, like Cristall, also plays left wing—he now intends to spend the rest of the summer back home in Canada preparing for his rookie camp, which this year, just happens to fall on Rosh Hashanah. Cristall loves challah, he calls NHL star Zach Hyman his favourite Jewish athlete, and he hopes to represent his own community the way Hyman does. Cristall joins Ellin for his first feature interview, on this special crossover episode of The CJN Daily, along with Gabe Pulver, co-host of The CJN's Jewish sports podcast, Menschwarmers. No technical difficulties this week. PP1 Podcast is brought to you by THPN and DraftKings Sportsbook App. Ryan and Ted had plenty to chat about with the NHL Draft, free agency, and an OEL buyout having taken place, and they loaded up. Vancouver got their guy in Tom Willander and sometimes safe is the right thing. They took some swings deeper in the draft but overall, not a terrible showing for their prospect pool. We get into the OEL buyout and how it needed to happen to open up any chance of this team being competitive in the somewhat near future. Free agency was a safe space for the Canucks this year handing out very little money and very little term. WE'RE GROWING! Of course, Ryan wants to talk about Andrew Cristall going to Washington and how they got a steal at pick 40. He also lets everyone know about his latest disaster with the Stanley Cup and how it looks a little different these days. We recap the Home Base tournament and how much money was raised and how both teams did on the stat sheet. SPOILER ALERT: Ryan was taken yard by Mike Smith. Hopefully you can give the show some extra love on the socials while we take a break. Enjoy your summer and we'll see you after the August long.
The podcast is back to break down the NHL Entry Draft, where the Capitals nabbed Ryan Leonard and Andrew Cristall, among others. We talk the Caps' bright future after cleaning up at the last two drafts, as well as the value the Caps are getting with new additions Max Pacioretty and Joel Edmundson.
We're deep into summer and the sports world is moving slowly, so we're giving you a comprehensive round-up of Jewish sports stories you need to know. Israel qualified for Olympic soccer with big dreams for its young squad; a second Jewish guy named Amari was drafted into the NBA (well, the first was Amar'e, but still) in Amari Bailey for the Charlotte Hornets; the NHL now has another Canadian Jewish hockey talent to watch, drafting Talmud Torah alum Andrew Cristall out of British Columbia; and with the Tour de France in full swing, we recap some great Jewish moments in cycling, including a righteous-gentile racing cyclist, the tour's antisemitic origins and the surprising birth of Curious George. Credits Menschwarmers is hosted by James Hirsh and Gabe Pulver, and produced and edited by Michael Fraiman. Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens
Inside today's Locked on Canadiens Scott is back from a busy weekend at the NHL Draft Combine in Buffalo, New York and there is a ton to talk about. Scott gives his overall reaction to the testing on Saturday, and also the connections between many of the top players in this upcoming draft class. Players like Andrew Cristall gushing about Connor Bedard, or the trio of USNTDP players at the top of the class all have plenty to say about each other. Also based off the interviews from the week, what are the Canadiens going to do at fifth overall in the NHL Draft? It's still cloudy, but Scott does his best to try and read between the lines to see what Kent Hughes and the Canadiens might be up to when they take the stage in Nashville. Speaking of the Canadiens, when interviews and testing wrapped up on Saturday one thing was very clear, the Montreal Canadiens are very much in the hunt for a goalie in this upcoming draft. Scott spoke with Michael Hrabal, Adam Gajan, and Trey Augustine over the weekend, each of whom had a long talk with the Canadiens during the week. Scott walks through each of the options and why it's a great time for the Canadiens to stock up on goalie prospects. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Winnipeg Jets are suffering through many injuries this season, so can they sustain their current level of success? We review the PHF standings and talk about the Boston Pride. A prospect has crossed our desks that may be worth a watch...Andrew Cristall of the Kelowna Rockets.
