The Washington Capitals are making tough roster decisions as training camp winds down. With preseason cuts piling up and a long list of waiver-eligible players at risk, the battle for roster spots has never been tighter. Rising young talents like Andrew Cristall, Hendrix Lapierre, and Vincent Iorio are putting pressure on veterans and bubble players alike, while the team also weighs the goaltending logjam between Logan Thompson, Charlie Lindgren, and Clay Stevenson. We break down the latest moves, including Lynden Lakovic being sent back to juniors, Spencer Smallman and Calle Rosen hitting waivers, and what the Capitals' expected lineup could look like on opening night. In this episode of the Caps Minutecast Podcast, host Dan Holmi dives deep into Washington's biggest preseason storylines. From Cristall's highlight-reel goal in Hershey to Iorio's physical transformation, we analyze which young players are ready to force their way onto the roster. Plus, we discuss the uncertainty surrounding veteran defenseman John Carlson's future, how the Capitals can balance youth development with competing for a playoff spot, and what to watch as the team prepares for their October 8 season opener against the Boston Bruins. Episode 2 of WHL Weekly is here to celebrate the start of the 2025-26 WHL Regular Season! Action gets underway Friday, September 19. We have an action-packed show, including sound from Washington Capitals prospect Andrew Cristall, Ottawa Senators star Dylan Cozens, and our WHL Player Spotlight features Prince Albert Raiders defenceman Brock Cripps. Let's drop the puck!
The Washington Capitals are hitting the ice ahead of training camp, and the early informal skates at MedStar Iceplex are already setting the tone for the season. Veterans like Alex Ovechkin, Tom Wilson, Dylan Strome, and Pierre-Luc Dubois are pushing the pace, while newcomer Justin Sourdif is turning heads with his versatility and proven scoring touch from the AHL. These competitive sessions are more than just warmups — they're raising the bar across the roster and giving coach Spencer Carbery a closer look at who's ready to contribute from day one. Beyond the veterans, the spotlight is also on the next generation of Capitals talent. First-round pick Lynden Lakovic continues to show upside with his size and two-way game, while Andrew Cristall's elite scoring touch and improved skating could make him the breakout story of camp. With roster battles heating up in the middle and bottom six, and special teams roles still up for grabs, Washington fans can expect a fascinating blend of veteran leadership and youthful competition shaping the Capitals' 2025 season. The Washington Capitals are heading into training camp with a major focus on youth, as GM Chris Patrick looks to give prospects a real chance to earn roster spots. Players like Ivan Miroshnichenko, Hendrix Lapierre, and Andrew Cristall headline a growing wave of young talent competing for ice time, while veterans such as Connor McMichael are preparing for bigger roles in the 2025–26 season. With roster flexibility and open competition on the horizon, the Capitals are betting on development and internal growth rather than quick veteran signings. One of the biggest storylines centers around Ryan Leonard, who enters his true rookie year with renewed confidence after spending the offseason building strength and sharpening his skating and shot. Leonard is determined to earn a spot on the opening-night roster and play with more freedom after a timid debut last season. Alongside Leonard, McMichael, Ilya Protas, and other young Capitals are making noise in informal skates, setting the stage for one of the most competitive camps in recent team history. Washington Capitals fans will be watching closely to see if the team's youth movement can spark long-term Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the cuts that were made to the roster and how the camp has been divided in two groups. Group A appears to be the group that is going to be on the ice for game one of the regular season for the Capitals. Group B appears to be the group headed for Hershey at some point. A notable name on group A is Matthew Phillips. Matthew who played in the Calgary Wranglers last year had back to back season scoring 30 goals in the NHL and finished number 2 in the AHL in goals scored last season. He has played so well that he's getting a longer look in group A. How does the Caps blue line stack up with the rest of the NHL. Andrew Cristall and Antoine Keller are killing it. Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals
In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about three platers at Capitals rookie camp that have shown the most improvement. Hendrix Lapierre worked on his skating in the off season and hired a mental coach. In 60 regular-season games with Hershey, Lapierre had 15 goals and 15 assists. "I was more focused on just moving properly and speed and stuff like that. We knew that if I was only training for seven weeks, weightlifting, stuff, we didn't have much time to kind of go through the phases. So it was about moving properly, feeling good on the ice, whether it's hand-eye coordination or just my face-offs," Lapierre explained. "I think at the start, I was a little surprised of what we were doing. But as the summer kind of went on, I was like, ‘Okay, I'm suddenly feeling really, really good.' And then, I guess this is just like a continuation of what I've been doing, I try to do the same exercise in the gym too. So I guess maybe a little less like weightlifting and stuff like that, more". Later Dan talks about Alexander Suzdalev For the Regina Pats last season he lead his fellow freshmen in scoring in 2022-23. "He's a really smart player and you watch him shoot the puck out here today and he's got a really good shot, too, but it was a little bit light," Mahoney explained added. "[We wanted him to] get a little bit stronger, being able to be better in holding a position in front of the net for deflections or winning more puck battles in the corners, those sorts of things. He's always had the skating and the skill and the sense, but he was a little bit light, little bit thin. So strength was an issue for him." IN the last segment Dan talks about ANdrew Cristall was the 18-year-old, who was taken 40th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft Cristall hired a power skating coach to help his game. There's an extra step in his step and should help him with his speed and overall skating. There's an extra step in his step and should help him with his speed and overall skating.CHAT CAPS HOCKEY WITH ME ON SUBTEXT: https://joinsubtext.com/lockedoncapitalsSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!BirddogsGo to birddogs.com/LOCKEDONNHL or enter promo code LOCKEDONNHL for a free water bottle with any order. In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the 13th annual National Hockey League Players' Association Rookie Showcase on September 5 at MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Virginia. The highlight of the event was the number one overall pick in this year's NHL draft Connor Bedard. Connor who had 71 goals and 143 points in just 57 games for Regina last season. Connor had some kind words for Alex Ovechkin and commented on Ovechkin's chase of Wayne Gretzky for all time goals scored: "I think he gets it. Two years I give him, but yeah, it's pretty crazy that he's scored that many goals," Bedard said. "I mean, just to kind of be watching it in the past couple years, obviously got 800, and then you know, passed Howe and everything, so it's just pretty cool to see. If he breaks it, it's special for the whole game." Late Dan talks about the well-attended informal skate today. Ovechkin joins Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson, Darcy Kuemper, Alex Alexeyev, T.J. Oshie, Dylan Strome, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nic Dowd, Joel Edmundson, Nick Jensen, Vincent Iorio, Andrew Cristall, Lucas Johansen, Joe Snively, Alexander Suzdalev, Alex Limoges were in attendance. The New York Rangers are heading into the 2023/2024 season as one of the favorites to not only win the Metropolitan Division but to win the Eastern Conference. They had a very disappointing loss in round 1 to the New Jersey Devils in the NHL Playoffs last season. There were some changes in the franchise since the series loss. They fired head coach Gerard Gallant and hired Peter Laviolette in the summer. Some of the roster changes include the additions of Blake Wheeler, Nick Bonino and Erik Gustafsson. The Rangers also had a good draft, being able to select Gabe Perrault with the 23rd overall. Can this quick retool help the Rangers finally get back to the Stanley Cup Finals and win their first Cup since 1994? Now the team on the other side of the island, the New York Islanders, also had an underwhelming season. They finished their season 42-31-9 in the Metro Division before being booted out of the playoffs in round 1, falling to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 in the series. After acquiring and signing Bo Horvat to a long-term deal at the NHL Trade Deadline, the Islanders really didn't have a lot of cap space to make any major outside-the-organization signings. They were able to re-up on big-time pending unrestricted free agents Pierre Engvall, Iyla Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov to nice contracts. There are still moves that need to be made to get the Isles back under the cap ceiling. Are these deals going to be good enough to make the Islanders a legit threat in the Metro Division? This next team is definitely going to be a wild card, no pun intended. The Washington Capitals are coming off one of their worst seasons in a long time. They finished 35-37-10 and placed sixth in the Metro. Many writers and media heads are starting to think this Washington team may be getting ready to rebuild. Now the Capitals entered this summer firing the now-Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette and replaced him with Spencer Carbery. Carbery, who was a coach in the Washington farm system before, is taking over after a short stint as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Similarly to the Islanders' roster, the Capitals are really tight to the salary cap. Washington may be closer to a rebuild for that reason, specifically. The only moves that the Caps were able to make are signing free agent Max Pacioretty, who's coming off a major Achilles injury, and signing winger Tom Wilson to a six-year extension through 2030-2031. The Capitals also had a great first two rounds of the NHL Entry Draft, selecting Ryan Leonard at pick eight and Andrew Cristall at pick 40. Even if this team is a bit older right now, the Capitals are setting to make the rebuild or retool quick and easy.

Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens
Inside today's Locked on Canadiens Scott is back from a busy weekend at the NHL Draft Combine in Buffalo, New York and there is a ton to talk about. Scott gives his overall reaction to the testing on Saturday, and also the connections between many of the top players in this upcoming draft class. Players like Andrew Cristall gushing about Connor Bedard, or the trio of USNTDP players at the top of the class all have plenty to say about each other. Also based off the interviews from the week, what are the Canadiens going to do at fifth overall in the NHL Draft? It's still cloudy, but Scott does his best to try and read between the lines to see what Kent Hughes and the Canadiens might be up to when they take the stage in Nashville. Speaking of the Canadiens, when interviews and testing wrapped up on Saturday one thing was very clear, the Montreal Canadiens are very much in the hunt for a goalie in this upcoming draft. Scott spoke with Michael Hrabal, Adam Gajan, and Trey Augustine over the weekend, each of whom had a long talk with the Canadiens during the week. Scott walks through each of the options and why it's a great time for the Canadiens to stock up on goalie prospects. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
