This episode features a live audience conversation at The Vine Club in Atlanta with Thibaut Marquis, the North America Export Manager for Maison Louis Jadot. Thibaut is originally from the Loire Valley in France, but he has lived in several countries, including South Africa, Argentina, and Canada, before living in the United States for the past 15 years. He has been working in various Sales Management positions for US wine importers (Terlato Wines' Burgundy division, Wilson Daniels), and international wineries (Familia Torres, Les Dauphins, Jaillance, David Family). He joined Maison Louis Jadot in 2022 and is now based out of New York City. Passionate about the wine industry as a whole, Thibaut has also completed his WSET Diploma, so he brings a wealth of experience but also knowledge to this role that essentially serves as a bridge between the winery in Burgundy and their importers. We enjoyed some incredibly special wines from their vast portfolio during this recording session, and it was a study and showcase of how these wines are so connected to the vineyards. We opened the mic at the end of the show to our guests from the Atlanta wine community, and we explored so many topics that impact all levels of the wine industry. Recorded LIVE at Vine Club on November 19, 2024 sponosored by Kobrand and Tower Beer, Wine & Spirits. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/acorkintheroad/support
This is the second installment of an in-depth series on the Rioja DOCa, where I do a close look at the three major zones of Rioja. I host top producers in each show to tell us about their areas and the challenges they face. In Episode 544, we heard about the Rioja Alta zone and this week we hear from Tao Platón of Rioja Alavesa, who presents a completely different perspective on the region. Tao Platón graduated in Enology from the University of Valladolid, holds a WSET Diploma and is an Master of Wine (MW) candidate. He has made wine in Bordeaux, Burgundy, New Zealand, and Rioja and in 2016 he joined Península Vinicultores as head winemaker and technical director. Photo: Tao Platón. Credit: Península Vinicultores He leads the production of a new generation of terroir-driven wines from Rioja Alavesa at Bodega Bideona. Bideona cultivates hundreds of individual parcels and makes wine in the Burgundian model – terroir-driven, vineyard specific wines. He joins us as a representative of the zone of Alavesa and as a passionate advocate for the system of terroir-driven, single vineyard wines, a system which Rioja approved in 2018. We discuss: The Rioja Alavesa overview -- terroir, the history of the region, and how Alavesa is made up of many small, family owned wineries. The strengths of Alavesa, which are old vines, mainly of Tempranillo. Wineries of Alavesa don't blend grapes from elsewhere so the wines are very terroir-driven and local in Alavesa. We discuss the various styles of wines, including the production of whites in the region. We get to some of the very hard questions regarding Alavesa and its Basque identity. We fill you in on the political independent movement in the Basque Country, the various ideologies and how those are playing out in the politics of the Rioja DOCa. The differences between business models (traditional model versus newer, terroir driven producers) in the Rioja DOCa, as well as the tension is between quality producers and those who look to make cheap wine that they can sell quickly, regardless of quality. The potential future for Rioja and the DOCa and various scenarios that could exist for Alavesa in the future. ____________________________________________________ This show represents a totally different perspective from Rioja Alavesa versus Rioja Alta!
This episode features Diane Carpenter of Ross Knoll Vineyard discussing the process of preparing for retirement and producing the final vintage of her Ross Knoll wines. Her transparency and honesty is incredible to hear as she talks about the journey of planting a vineyard, starting a wine label, and ultimately deciding it's time to close that chapter and move into retirement. Diane was born and raised in the United Kingdom and moved to the United States in 1987 to be with her now husband, David. Living in New York City, she had access to some of the country's greatest wine schools and took the opportunity to learn more about the world of wine as an academic. Her first classes were with the American Sommelier Association, followed by the Society of Wine Educators and then she even started to pursue the prestigious WSET Diploma. Eventually, her education led her to the vineyard working harvests in California with winemaker, Paul Hobbs. In 2014, Diane purchased a property in Sebastopol, CA and converted an old paddock to a vineyard of 3,000 vines of Calera, Diane's favorite clone of Pinot Noir. She co-produced Ross Knoll wines with consulting winemaker Justin Seidenfeld since the first vintage in 2019, and now, after four celebrated vintages, you'll hear what decisions and life events have led to the decision to wind down in preparation for retirement. There is a very special wine, however, made in honor of the Atlanta wine community that will be released as part of the fifth and final vintage. You can follow her @yourwinestylist and @rossknollvineyard on Instagram. Welcome to Episode 1686 in which host Giulia Stocchetti interviews Gilles Coffi Degboe this week on The Next Generation where young Italian wine people 30 and under shake up the wine scene. More about today's guest Gilles Coffi Degboe (Coffi is his first name and means "Friday") was born in Benin, a tiny strip of land located in the western part of Africa, between Nigeria and Togo. In 1994, because of his father's wishes, he moved to Bologna with his family. Gilles met wine when he was a teenager, working at the restaurant Albergo "Da Marino," in Rufina (Località Masseto), an establishment run by people his father already knew before their arrival in Italy, who later became great family friends. During this experience Gilles sipped his first goblet of Sangiovese, a goblet that created in him a curiosity about the scents of wine, its anecdotes and stories. Curiosity that then led him to begin a real journey into the world of wine. His studies began at the Pellegrino Artusi Higher Education Institute, where he also had the opportunity to attend the first level of the sommelier course organized by AIS Romagna. His first work experience abroad was in China, in Beijing, a city where, during the 2008 Olympics, he worked at Casa Italia for the C.O.N.I. (Italian National Olympic Committee). In 2012 Gilles decided to return to Emilia Romagna and complete his Sommelier studies. Shortly thereafter, the school at which he completed his studies offered him to work as a lecturer in Restaurant service -Bartending, Cafeteria and Enology. He still lectures today, alongside his work as a consultant. Gilles was until 2023 the first and only Ambassador of the Negroamaro grape variety in Italy, Europe and the World. He also has the title of Ambassador of Albana, a typical grape variety of Emilia-Romagna. Anne McHale is well accomplished in the academia of wine. She has a Master of Wine (incredible study required to earn) and a WSET Diploma (the highest accolade for the Wine and Spirits Education Trust)...neither an easy feat by any stretch. But what is disarmning is her utter charm. First, her accent will confuse you until you understand the source, but her ability to articulate her ambition in wine is the clincher to fall head over heels for her. Each time I relisten to the show, I am reinspired by her wit, knowledge, and disposition. She resides in London and has won award after award for her wine education and wine writing. She is knowledgeable without the snobbery, inspiring without bragging and interesting without boorishness. Have a listen to Anne McHale.
In our new tasting episode, host Christopher Tanghe speaks with fellow Master Sommeliers Mark Guillaudeu and Chris Gaither. In addition to achieving the Master Sommelier certification, Mark holds the WSET Diploma and is currently working through the MW program. Chris Gaither and his wife, Rebecca Fineman, also a Master Sommelier, own Ungrafted and GluGlu in San Francisco. Chris worked at Spruce, Restaurant Gary Danko, Michael Mina, and Octavia prior to opening his own restaurants. He is an adjunct instructor at the San Francisco Wine School. After their tasting conversations, Mark and Chris taste the same white wine. Listen closely and guess along with them! We reveal the wine at the end of the episode. Welcome to episode 1449, What Pricing Communicates (for Fine Wine) with Peter Yeung This is the Wine2Wine Business Forum 2022 Series. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast. wine2wine is an international wine business forum, held annually in Verona Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals eager to develop and grow their wine business worldwide. About today' session: Pricing, for fine and luxury wines, is always a complex topic. It communicates where the brand is positioned (or desires to be positioned) in a regional and global market. It sends a message to consumers about the winery's value proposition to them. In this session, we will explore both the art and science of fine / luxury wine pricing and what pricing communicates to the marketplace. About the Speakers Peter Yeung Peter Yeung (pronounced “young”) is a leading wine business consultant, developing strategic business plans and innovative marketing plans for the wine industry. In 2019, however, he decided to take a sabbatical from his career and began formally studying wine, obtaining certifications in several wine courses in a short period (Professional Sommelier, WSET Level 3, Italian Wine Scholar at Wine Scholar Guild). In 2022, he started studying for the WSET Diploma certificate. Also, in 2022, Pablo became a VIA Italian Wine Ambassador. Pablo is now a VIA Certified Educator and aims to spread Italian wine culture to Brazilian audiences through his educational project called beboItalia, as he strongly believes in the potential of this market for Italian wines. A successful athlete with great skill, ball control, and a powerful shot with both his right and left legs, Hernanes played for various teams both in Brazil (São Paulo), Italy (Lazio, Internazionale, and Juventus), and even China, as well as representing the Brazilian national team (2014 World Cup and 2008 Summer Olympics). He won titles wherever he went, such as the Brazilian Championship twice with São Paulo, the Italian Championship with Juventus, and the Coppa Italia with Lazio and Juventus. As for wine, Hernanes had no previous contact with it and was abstinent until 2010, when São Paulo sold him to Lazio in Italy. From there, a passion for wine completely took over Hernanes. When he moved to Internazionale Milan in the 2013/14 season, the midfielder began to take his passion seriously. Things progressed even further between 2015 and 2016 when the Brazilian transferred to Juventus. Upon arriving in Turin, Hernanes visited several wine regions and became enchanted by Monferrato. At the time, he didn't own a house in Italy and thought it would be the perfect place to establish his residence, so he started looking for something there. During these searches, he found Ca' del Profeta, which he purchased in 2015. In addition to the Ca' del Profeta winery, Hernanes also owns Ca' del Profeta Ristorante & Relais, a wine tourism destination, and a wine bistrot in Turin called Luogo Divino.
