Just when you think that we wouldn't dare do it, we invite you to KEEP IT COMIN' LOVE - Sherman and Ski are vouching for disco (and Latin FUNK) superstars and underrated heroes, KC and THE SUNSHINE BAND. Literally, there are nothing but hits from Miami native Harry Wayne Casey. In fact, a person can drive from Washington DC to Carlisle PA, and you are NOT out of hits, not by a longshot. Sherman and Ski DO get to a couple of extremely deep cuts from the catalog, specifically from their earlier funk records which has some serious bass and horn action. Ski reminds us that there's not too much of the string section of traditional disco. However, Sherman informs us that there is plenty of Booty and Boogie references that remain. Sherman can't get enough of their fourth album, the oddly titled KC & The Sunshine Band Part III, which is jam-packed with earworms and rump-shakers. Ski pulls from the stellar 1974 debut album Do It Good, and boy is Ski ready to party and Sound Your Funky Horn. Sherman is floored that Please Don't Go was originally penned by KC as he only knows the KWS 90's club cover, but of course Ski knew it. We both DO agree that the premium KC material leans towards the earliest work, and one should probably avoid the 2000's album Yummy, with a bizarre Peter Gabriel cover…yeah, let's stick with the Latin funk and disco stuff. We also reconnect briefly on the Rock & Roll HOF class of 2022, and see how we did…have a listen!

Alright, folks, break out your platform shoes and your dance clothes, because What the Riff is headed down to the club! KC and the Sunshine Band was playing in all the disco dance studios in 1977, but they were particularly prominent in the Miami market, near their home town of Hialeah, Florida. We're riffing on Part 3, unexpectedly the fourth studio album from the group (though there was a bit of a reset with their second album being self-titled and the first album having only moderate success).Harry Wayne Casey was a part time employee at TK Records in Hialeah when he formed the band, originally called KC & the Sunshine Junkanoo Band. Casey worked with Richard Finch, engineer for TK Records, to produce the albums, including Part 3. Additional musicians joined, including Jerome Smith on guitar, Robert Johnson on drums, and numerous others to complete the horn section. KC and the Sunshine Band would find a virtuous cycle, as Casey and Finch would write songs inspired by what they saw at the discos, then would see their songs played at those same clubs.KC and the Sunshine Band were often featured as guests on FM pop powerhouse Y-100, and this exposure contributed to their success. The first big hit was their second and self-titled album released in 1975, which produced the hits “Get Down Tonight” and “That's the Way (I Like It)” Part 3 would continue their funk/disco dominance. The band would continue to see success through their sixth studio album released in 1979. Shortly thereafter styles would change, and the disco sound would not continue into the 1980's. That, and a falling out between Casey and Finch would end the band for a while.KC and the Sunshine Band has seen a resurgence with the popularity of retro bands, and still tours today. Wrap Your Arms Around MeThe fifth single from the album is a little bit of a deeper cut and features the horns prominently with a funky groove.(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your BootyYou can't go wrong with a dance song that tells you to shake your booty! Although this first single from the album was number 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot Soul Singles Chart, there was some controversy attached to it, with speculation that it had a stronger sexual connotation than simply dancing.I'm Your Boogie ManThis song written by Casey and Finch also hit number 1 on the Hot 100. Finch said that the song was written about a DJ named Robert W. Walker, who was the first to play their song “Get Down Tonight.” Keep It Comin' LoveA little softer than some, this song nevertheless was still successful. However, it only reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, being kept out of the number 1 slot by Meco's “Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band,” and the big hit of the 70's, Debbie Boone's “You Light Up My Life.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme from the television series “Fantasy Island”Headlined by Ricardo Montalban as Mr. Roarke and Herve Villechaize as his right hand man, Tattoo, this show would feature a stream of actors and actresses playing one-off characters chasing their dreams on the island. STAFF PICKS:Isn't She Lovely by Stevie WonderBruce leads off the staff picks with what feel is one of the most positive songs you will ever hear. Wonder celebrates the birth of his daughter Aisha Morris on this song that opens side three of his double album, “Songs in the Key of Life.” All instrumentation in the song is played by Wonder except for a few of the keyboard parts which were furnished by Greg Phillganes. Hard Luck Woman by KissRob's staff pick sounds a lot like Rod Stewart for good reason — it was written by Paul Stanley for Stewart. Though Stanley thought it sounded like “You Wear It Well,” his band Kiss decided it would be a good follow up to their successful ballad, “Beth.” The song made it to 15 on the charts, and is a rare ballad. Drummer Peter Criss sings lead on this song, as he did on “Beth.”Red by Sammy HagarWayne brings us the Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar, with an anthem off his second solo album. This is also the album and song which gave him the name “the Red Rocker.” A fan called him the Red Rocker when getting a picture, and Hagar liked the name. The album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios.I Never Cry by Alice CooperBrian wraps up the staff picks with a mellow ballad from the not-normally mellow Alice Cooper. This is from the album “Alice Cooper Goes to Hell,” a concept album inspired by his visit to rehab. Many of his fans were disappointed with this softer side of Cooper, but his performances never suffered for the presence of a ballad or two. Autor: Thomas Steinberg.
It almost didn't happen for George McCrae. In fact, the whole thing was a total fluke. He and his wife Gwen sang back up on recording sessions around Miami with his focus more on managing her career than pursuing his own. But when Harry Wayne Casey wrote a new song that was too high for his register, he asked George, who happened to be around, if he would sing it. That song, 1975's "Rock Your Baby", went on to be one of the biggest selling singles of all time, selling at least 11 million copies, and went #1 all over the world. Success like that is almost impossible to replicate, and George was no different. He continued in music for years, even singing back up on a Bill Wyman solo record, but nothing else took off. He even went back to working normal, blue collar jobs. Thankfully, Europe re-embraced Disco eventually so he moved there and is performing to enraptured audiences. In fact, in February, he will be a part of the 2020 Ultimate Disco Cruise. His story is unlike anyone else's. Enjoy! https://ultimatediscocruise.com/

The Sunshine Band - Black Water Gold Simple DJ Edit By Petko Turner https://hypeddit.com/track/lflb3v The seeds of KC & The Sunshine Band were planted when two South Florida boys, Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch met while working at the attic studio of T.K. Records, above the warehouse of Tones Distributors. Rick had worked his way up to assisting producers, while Harry's duties included processing returns and boxing up records, and sometimes playing keyboards in recording sessions. It was Casey’s idea for him and Finch to pool their skills. "Everybody else had a team together already", says Rick. "He found out I played bass and drums, and I found out he played keyboards, and when the studio was empty in the evenings, we would go up there and find out what kind of music would happen. A lot of people would throw tape away because they couldn’t figure out how to make the machine erase properly, Rick recalls. It was expensive, so I would take it out of the trash can, wind it up on the reel, clean it up, and use that for recording". Not only were the boys thrifty, but, thanks to the sessions they had already played in the studio, they were also fast. It didn’t take much experimenting for the two to get their own eclectic sound together. KC & The Sunshine Band released two singles from their first album, "Do It Good" and hit the R&B charts when "Blow Your Whistle" went to #27 in the fall of ’73 and "Sound Your Funky Horn" made it to #21 in early ’74. The first real sign that the Casey/Finch sound was really clicking came in September of 1974, when "Queen Of Clubs" reached the U.K. Top 10, and the Sunshine Band was in demand for live gigs all around the country. This was good news, of course. But the best news was yet to come courtesy of one George McCrae and a song he wrote called "Rock Your Baby". As studio musicians, Casey and Finch recorded the rhythm track in just 45 minutes, with just one additional player, Jerome Smith, on guitar. Company brass, Henry Stone and Steve Alaimo felt the song had potential and offered it to Gwen McCrae, who passed on it. Then, George McCrae, who happened into the studio, heard the instrumental and in a mere two takes, put down his own vocals. The song was released, and George McCrae had a number one hit on his hands. Matt Iseman - KC and the Sunshine Band We start the show by watching a couple of the latest viral videos, one of a McDonald's employee fighting with a customer in the drive-thru. The next video we watch is of a 10 year old kid trying to get adults to light his cigarette - and the white trash that does it for him. Next the hilarious Matt Iseman calls and talks about his broad selection of TV credits. He explains he started as a doctor, and promptly decided it wasn't for him, and became a stand-up comic. He talks about how his original material was medical based, and how he transitioned into more mainstream material. We then learn how he got his first TV gig as a game show host, transformed into a house makeover show star, and then worked his way to American Ninja Warrior. He also talks about his trips to the Middle East for the USO. We discuss whats next for him, and wish him well. Next we talk to Harry Wayne Casey the creator of KC and the Sunshine Band about the band's history and their new material. We finish with sum random chatter and call it a night!
KC and The Sunshine Band was formed in 1973 by Harry Wayne Casey (“KC”). A native of Miami, Florida, KC’s music is a blend of Funk, R&B and Disco. KC’s most well-known songs include the hits "That’s the Way (I Like It)", "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty", "I’m Your Boogie Man", "Keep It Comin’ Love", "Get Down Tonight", "Give It Up", and "Please Don’t Go". KC’s music continues to live on today through current tours, commercials and movies. My special co-host for this show is my wife, Sharon Aberle, who is a true fan of KC and The Sunshine Band. KC and The Sunshine Band will be performing live Saturday, November 17, 2012, at 9:00 PM at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, NJ. For ticket information please go to KC’s website at: www.heykcsb.com.
