What if the values that made you who you are — resilience, service, empathy — could become the operating system for an entire organization? Today's guest grew up in Hialeah, Florida, the son of Cuban immigrants who arrived in America with almost nothing and built everything through grit, integrity, and an unwavering belief that hard work is the price of admission. He lost his father at 12 years old, found his footing in the U.S. Army — where he'd eventually jump out of planes at night as part of an Airborne unit — and then quietly built one of the most storied careers in the travel industry. David Herrera served as President of Norwegian Cruise Line, where over more than a decade he helped transform the company's commercial operations, led its expansion into China, and championed a genuine, veteran-driven military appreciation program that earned him letters, mugs, and thank-you notes from guests whose gratitude had nothing to do with the bottom line. But what strikes you most about David isn't the titles or the milestones — it's that he leads the same way his mother lived, the same way his Army sergeant Mahoney taught him: from the front, with his word as his bond, leaving no doubt whose side he's on. In this conversation, we talk about growing up in a Cuban immigrant household that embodied the American dream, what the military teaches you about trust and team that no MBA program can replicate, how he thinks about culture not as a poster on the wall but as the answer to the question — who's winning here, and why? — and what it really means to be a servant leader when the stakes are high. In this episode we discuss: Hire your manager, not just your job. The person above you shapes everything about your early career experience. Choose them wisely. If you're not early, you're late. Punctuality is ultimately about respect — for other people's time and for the commitments you make. Share the victory, own the setback. When things go right, celebrate the team. When things go sideways, step forward and take responsibility. Culture is what gets rewarded. Not what's written on the wall — but who's winning in your organization and what it is about them that you actually respect and want to replicate. Treat everything as a learning opportunity. Doesn't matter if you're painting parking lots in Miami heat or running a division — be in the moment, observe what works, and study what doesn't so you can avoid it. Lead from the front. Never ask someone to do something you haven't done or aren't willing to do alongside them. That credibility is the foundation of real trust. Know your foxhole friends. Who in your life both genuinely cares about you and is capable of showing up when it counts? That combination is rarer than most people realize. Sometimes the right business decision comes at a personal cost. Separating emotion from judgment is one of the hardest and most important skills a leader can develop — and it never fully stops stinging.

In a re-broadcast of The South Florida Roundup, we revisited the stories WLRN reporters followed in 2025 on the South Florida cities that turned 100 years. It's WLRN's fascinating series “History We Call Home: 100 Years of South Florida.” The reports take us back to the epic real estate boom of the 1920s, which spawned city charters up and down our coast. Was Al Capone a founding father of Deerfield Beach? Why did all those pink flamingos stay in Hialeah? And how did Boca Raton become a reverse, North-to-South Black migration magnet?

On this episode of the South Florida Roundup, we looked at the new Jeffrey Epstein revelations coming out of Washington and how they're landing in Palm Beach County, the sex-trafficking scandal's epicenter [01:09]. We also talked to Hialeah Mayor-elect Bryan Calvo about why the current mayor seems to be making the power shift there less than amicable [19:24]. And we examined the human targets of the U.S. military's anti-narcotics strikes in the Caribbean — and what's next for Venezuela as a U.S. aircraft carrier arrives [36:45].
Send us a textA classroom can be a launchpad for climate action when reading meets real life. We sit down with Miami-area educator Catherine Manfra to explore how English language arts becomes a powerful space for climate literacy, creative expression, and student agency—especially in a region living with hurricanes, sea-level rise, and rapid development at the edge of the Everglades.Catherine walks us through her Earth Day unit anchored by Hope Jahren's The Story of More and climate-focused poetry, showing how accessible science writing invites teens into complex topics without overwhelming them. From lunchroom showcases to one-minute PSAs, her students translate facts into story, practice tight writing and media literacy, and share concrete steps that counter defeatism. We also unpack how giving students information and choice sparks deeper research, community involvement, and everyday action.Beyond the classroom, we highlight the Stories-To-Live-By collective, a statewide network of teachers and researchers crafting place-based, multimodal approaches to climate education while navigating book bans and shifting policies. Catherine shares how the group's workshops and shared resources build confidence. She also talks about how the Fairchild Challenge debate strengthens ELA standards, STEM integration, and civic discourse by asking students to argue multiple sides of timely environmental issues. It's a hopeful blueprint for educators who want rigorous, inclusive climate literacies that prepare young people for a just, livable future. If this conversation resonates, follow the show, share it with a colleague, and leave a review with your favorite climate literacy text or project idea. Your feedback helps us bring more teacher-tested practices to more classrooms.Catherine is a Florida native. Born in Hialeah, a suburb of Miami with a predominantly Hispanic community, she now lives in the Kendall area just south of Miami. She has seen Miami-Dade County continue to expand westward since her childhood, including encroachment on the Florida Everglades. The Florida Everglades are ecologically significant in their role as a subtropical wilderness, a habitat for many threatened and endangered species, and a provider of flood control, water filtration, and freshwater supply for millions of people. She became a part of the Stories-To-Live-By project by answering an initial online survey of teachers who incorporate environmental topics into their curriculum. After teaching all levels of high school English in public schools in Miami-Dade County for 22 years, Catherine now teaches at Palmer Trinity School, an independent private school. Additionally, Catherine is a part of the Junior League of Miami, a women's group that serves and focuses on women's and children's issues in the community from education to safety. On this episode of The South Florida Roundup, we took a look at the spate of elections that took place throughout South Florida this week, and how the political patterns of the past several decades seem to be shifting in some major city governments. We spoke with the two mayoral candidates for the City of Miami that are now set to battle in a runoff in December: Emilio Gonzalez and Eileen Higgins [01:09]. Then, we moved the conversation onto Hialeah to discuss the city's youngest mayor in its 100-year history — Bryan Calvo — and what the outlook is for a city facing economic uncertainty [22:43]. Finally, we rounded up local elections in cities on the coast and to the south from Miami-Dade to Monroe County [35:55].

Nicky Gonzalez joins us to discuss her Gothic debut novel, Mayra (2025, Random House), a story about two friends who reunite in a mysterious house in the Florida Everglades and uncover a hidden history. It's a book that Karen Thompson Walker describes as "part coming-of-age story, part Twilight Zone episode, part thoughtful meditation on all of the ways that memory is itself a haunted house." Gonzalez hails from Hialeah, Florida. She earned her MFA from the University of Oregon, where she also taught fiction and composition. Her work has appeared in McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, BOMB Magazine, Kenyon Review Online, and Taco Bell Quarterly, among other publications. In 2021 she was a finalist for the Granum Foundation Prize.Host: Davin MalasarnThe Artist's Statement is brought to you by The Granum Foundation.
