*The music in this video is copyrighted and all rights reserved to the respective copyright holders* In the premiere episode of The Audio Files, hosts Brad Zerbo and Jaytriot fire up Saturday night with a high-voltage celebration of all things music. From their roots as lifelong metalheads to their guilty pleasures in disco and Motown, the duo delivers deep musical passion with equal parts reverence and riotous fun. They kick off with a tribute to AC/DC and Casey & the Sunshine Band, then trade stories of their earliest musical influences, Brad's Monkees obsession and metal awakening via Sepultura and Megadeth, and Jay's unforgettable childhood brush with David Lee Roth (and the comment that ended a potential stepdad relationship in one sentence). The show includes a heartfelt Mother's Day In Memoriam segment, spotlighting Glenn Miller and Blondie, plus a sobering tribute to Blondie's late drummer Clem Burke. The pair also introduce a recurring segment, Video Killed the Radio Star, launching with Billy Squier's legendary career-killing video for “Rock Me Tonight.” From punk and metal to disco and funk, The Audio Files is a love letter to music across genres, with live commentary, backstories, and raw appreciation for what makes music timeless. As they sign off with Parliament's “Flashlight,” it's clear: this isn't just another music podcast. It's a full-body jam session and a joyride through the soundtrack of your life.

This week we set the controls of our Wayback Machine to the funky days of 1975 and celebrate the 50th anniversary of some iconic albums! It's a year of highs for a lot of bands we now think of as classic rock; it was a key year for funk and disco; the Philly Soul sound was very much in fashion; and it was a year of reinvention for some well-established acts. We talk about albums by Elton John, KISS, KC and the Sunshine Band, Queen, Parliament, Roxy Music, Fleetwood Mac, Aerosmith, the Boss, and the weirdest album Lou Reed ever made. We even get a history lesson on the Third (THIRD!) Great Cod War!  If you'd like to follow along with our discussion, we have a Spotify Playlist highlighting all the music that we talk about in the show! Send us a textThere's a new jam band rolling into town, although the members have been playing locally for years. This new band is calling themselves KC36 Orange Sunshine Band (shortened from KC36 and the Orange Sunshine Band). The name is a reference to the disco-funk group KC and the Sunshine Band, as well as to the strains of marijuana known as the KC36 and the Orange Sunshine. The band's lineup consists of guitarist Doug Diminico (a core member and leader of Smooth Money Gesture), mandolinist Dave Pullins (a core member of NoGo Gilbillies), drummer Larry Nivissimo, saxophonist Bruce Lish, and bassist John Heiland. Nivissimo, Lish, and Heiland have frequently collaborated for over three decades, also currently playing together in the Grateful Dead tribute group AoxomoxoA.Heiland grew up in Chicago, surrounded by “upriver Mississippi bass and blues.” He started learning basic blues when he got his first guitar, but he didn't start performing until he moved to Colorado in 1991. He lived next door to professional musicians, who heard him play more at that time, and he started playing bluegrass at Ward's Millsite Inn, where other bluegrass musicians welcomed him in weekly Saturday night jams. He joined his first band, the Sugarloaf String Band, shortly after, connecting with similar groups such as Yonder Mountain String Band and Leftover Salmon.During his time in Sugarloaf String Band, he went on the road with Shanti Groove, a jam grass group that also included Nivissimo and Lish in the lineup. After Sugarloaf dissolved as a group, member Ryan Jones (who has since worked with Galactic and is now the production manager of the New Orleans live music venue Tipitina's) sold Heiland his bass, which he had played in college. That started Heiland's trajectory as a bass player, forming bands with Nivissimo and Lish such as Fat Rabbit and the Funkytonk Heroes. After Funkytonk Heroes, they formed another group, Seeing Stars Band, which has since morphed into AoxomoxoA. Now, to fulfill a birthday wish from Lish, the three musicians have brought in Pullins and Diminico to form yet another group, KC36 Orange Sunshine Band. KC Johns music is infectious and with dynamic powerhouse pipes that take you on a whiskey-soaked jaunt to your favorite honky-tonk in the best way possible. Think Miranda Lambert meets Sheryl Crow with a touch of Brandi Carlisle, and you've got an artist with a voice all her own, with songs that make you feel like you've known her forever. Take “Mama didn't raise no big city pretty girl…” for example. Those are the first words sung by rising Country star KC Johns on her 2024 viral single “Rodeo Queen.” It's an upbeat rocker, awash with country steel roaring guitars. It's clear that this is more than just a song. It's a true story written from the heart. KC's mom was a champion barrel racer and her stepdad was a bull rider. They fell in love, and a true love story was born. KC always admired their story. Rodeo Queen is a tribute to their story. Born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in Hernando, Mississippi, a small town along the Tennessee-Mississippi line, KC was surrounded by music for as long as she can remember. Named after KC and the Sunshine Band and raised on the greats like Led Zeppelin, Stevie Nicks, and Sheryl Crow. Like many successful singers, KC started singing at church, but frequent family rodeo excursions made keeping regular attendance difficult. “My mom is a championship barrel racer and my stepdad was a bull rider,” So, by 17, with her acoustic guitar, KC and her mom headed to Nashville to make her dreams of becoming a recording artist a reality. “I just took my guitar and started hitting all the clubs on Broadway asking people if I could sing on stage,” KC adds. One thing led to another, and ultimately she landed an offer to work on Carnival Cruise Lines as a cruise ship performer. “It was supposed to just be a six-month contract but ended up lasting seven years cruising around the world singing for international audiences.'” she says. Having discovered and honed her stage legs young, KC was featured in Dolly Parton's “Coat of Many Then the pandemic began. KC, along with her fellow songwriters and musician friends utilized social media to grow a new audience. They performed live online and galvanizing new fan bases across the globe. They started playing cover songs and soon integrated some of their own material. “With that whole 2020 year, I just started doing TikTok Lives, Facebook Lives, and started meeting people on the internet,” she recalls. “And they were like, ‘Man, we'd love for you to come and do a private party. Then all of a sudden, we're doing shows in Norway.'” As the world opened back up, KC continued traveling to perform at various venues and festivals. Songs like “Whiskey Break” and later “Confused” fueled the shape of things to come. She released her digital debut album Thunder in 2022 and released her own whiskey line of the same name a year later. By 2024, it was game on. “Rodeo Queen” kissed the airwaves, reaching more than 300,000 streams on Spotify alone. “Rodeo Queen” has gained significant traction reaching #28 on Texas Country radio and being recognized as one of the Top 10 songs by the Texas Country Music Association. KC has recently performed at major events like Texas Motor Speedway, Big As Texas Festival, Idaho's HWY 30 Music Fest and the Grand View Music Festival in Oklahoma. “Texas Country is so much fun,” she says. “It's very genuine, and I felt like ‘Rodeo Queen' captured my story and the passion of so many other country music fans.” As KC gears up for 2025, new songs and performances will follow. KC Johns is a unique musical force, and as she enters the next phase of her career, her mission remains clear. “I honestly just want to continue going out and meeting wonderful people,” she humbly advises. “I love relating to people through my music.” #kcjohns #musician #songwriter #country #chrispomay #livewithcdp #barrycullenchevrolet #wellingtonbrewery https://kcjohns.rocks/ https://beacons.ai/chrisdpomay https://www.cameo.com/chrispomay

For this month's episode we're deep in the mid 70s to explore the finest glam, country, reggae, funk, rock, folk, afrobeat, prog, pop, avant garde noise, and whatever category you'd chuck Sparks in to. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Aerosmith, Banbarra, Black Sabbath, Burning Spear, Glen Campbell, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Foghat, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, Emmylou Harris, The Hollies, KC & The Sunshine Band, Kiss, Fela Kuti & Afrika 70, Willie Nelson, The Outlaws, Pink FLoyd, Lou Reed, Roxy Music, Paul SImon, Patti Smith, Sparks, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Television, The Tubes, Van Der Graaf Generator, The Walker Brothers, War, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention featuring Captain Beefheart. Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2juBbBjb0YxzF6VMAvNIEi?si=4334ba0599c44034Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Twitter – https://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Mike Jason, President, StarVista LIVE, one of the world's largest producers of music-themed cruises. StarVista LIVE offers a diverse collection of eight theme cruises covering a cross-section of music genres all generally aimed at 55-plus cruisers. StarVista LIVE's flagship cruise is the Malt Shop Memories Cruise which features the music of the 50s and 60s, and artists have included the likes of the Beach Boys, Frankie Valli and Dion. Other theme cruises are the Soul Train Cruise which has starred artists such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Smokey Robinson, and Kool and the Gang; The Country Music Cruise which has featured Vince Gill, Kenny Rogers and Alabama; ‘70s Rock & Romance Cruise with the likes of Peter Frampton, and America; Ultimate Disco Cruise which has featured Gloria Gaynor, and KC and The Sunshine Band; Flower Power Cruise featuring Three Dog Night, and Blood Sweat & Tear; Sandy Beaches Cruise headlined and curated by Delbert McClinton; and, their newest event, The Big Easy Cruise, featuring New Orleans jazz, funk, and R&B and just premiered in November. Mike is one of the few passionate cruisers I wrote about in two books of The Joy of Cruising Trilogy. Mike and StarVista LIVE was in my first cruising book, The Joy of Cruising, in Malt Shop Memories in a section called “Theme Cruising: Two Passions in One.” In my new release, The Joy of Cruising Again, I decided to circle back to Mike to cover how StarVista LIVE fared with the pandemic. The pandemic's effect on the cruise lines was major but the impact on operators of theme cruises is about as significant a crisis as they are likely to face. Every consequence of COVID-19 on the cruise lines is exacerbated for a company dependent on full-ship charters, particularly a music-oriented theme cruise company. Not only are they dependent on what the cruise lines do (who are dependent on the Center for Disease Control), but they had two sets of stakeholders they had to maintain ongoing relations with during the cruising shutdown—guests, who in theme cruising are very likely repeaters, and performers, also likely to have an ongoing relationship with StarVista LIVE. Support the show

If you've ever wondered how Beaver's pal Gilbert turned out, he's doing real neat. Stephen Talbot moved on from Mayfield to become a broadcast journalist for PBS, making investigative, news-making documentary films for Frontline, Bill Moyers and American Experience. Steve joins us to discuss his boomer journey from the streets of mythical 50s suburbia to counter-culture activism, to groundbreaking documentary journalism.First, Jeffrey Sitcov heads a foundation called Doors of Change. They are positively impacting the lives of homeless kids who find themselves on the streets due to abusive home lives and/or coming out to their families as LGBTQ. Early intervention leads to inspirational success stories for these kids. The organization's annual Concert of Hope is coming to San Diego in July with headliners, KC and The Sunshine Band. 100% of the proceeds benefit the kids!Next, Stephen Talbot tells us about his lates project, The Movement and The Madman which chronicles the significant impact of the anti-war movement on Nixon and Kissinger's dangerous escalation towards increased aggression and even possibly nuclear engagement in Viet Nam. If you were protesting the war, you saved lives.Stephen was very eager to enter the family business as a kid. His parents were entertainers. His Dad, Lyle Talbot was a film and TV actor who appeared as Ozzie Nelson's bud, Joe Randolph as Steve was portraying The Beaver's bestie, Gilbert Bates. But, as Steve went on to college and became increasingly interested in politics and campus activism, Beaver went into reruns and it wasn't long before Steve's rally speeches were interrupted by signs that read, “Gee, Beav. I don't know.” The blown cover did not deter Steve. He went to work as a reporter at San Francisco's KQED and then traveled the globe, writing, producing and directing over 40 illuminating documentaries, including: Justice For Sale, The Long March of Newt Gingrich, 1968: The Year that Shaped a Generation, and Soundtracks: Music Without Borders. Released in 1977, this isn't just a soundtrack; it's a cultural phenomenon that defined an era. "Saturday Night Fever" is a disco inferno of pulsating beats, soulful melodies, and unforgettable dancefloor anthems that became the quintessential sound of the late '70s. From the electrifying energy of "Stayin' Alive" to the soulful vibes of "How Deep Is Your Love," the Bee Gees dominated this soundtrack, contributing to its unforgettable disco flair. The album also features hits from other artists like Yvonne Elliman, Tavares, and KC and the Sunshine Band, creating a sonic landscape that mirrors the glamorous yet gritty world of disco nightlife.
