Clare's opposition TD has criticised HIQA for a lack of decisiveness in its review. The regulator had previously questioned the need for a second emergency department in the region following an inspection which highlighted the effects of gross overcrowding at UHL in 2022. Despite now recommending that either expanding or extending University Hospital Limerick would be a more timely solution for patient safety, it does say that a new hospital elsewhere could address long term bed requirements. Shannon Sinn Féin Deputy Donna McGettigan says this should've been obvious for some time.
The Health Minister has indicated that HIQA is not prioritising a new hospital for the MidWest, despite including it in its recommendations following a landmark review of the region's emergency capacity. Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has told the Dáil that the health watchdog believes expanding services at Dooradoyle or extending the campus would be a less costly and time consuming option than building a new hospital. In the meantime, the first of the two new 96 bed blocks, which will increase UHL's capacity in real terms by 71, is expected to open imminently. Responding to Clare TD Cathal Crowe, the Health Minister says it could open this week.
A new model three hospital is one of three options recommended by HIQA to address ongoing overcrowding issues in this region. The final report of the HIQA review examining the case for a new emergency department in the Midwest is expected to be published "very shortly". The review into urgent and emergency care capacity in this region was announced by former Health Minister Stephen Donnelly in May 2024. The findings of the review were initially due to be published in May of this year but this was pushed back to September. Six days out from the close of the month, Fine Gael Minister of State John Cummins says the demand and capacity projections being prepared by the ESRI are crucial to the process.

It's hoped the Public Expenditure Minister's visit to the MidWest Region's main hospital will bring positive change for service users. Jack Chambers visited University Hospital Limerick yesterday and met with HSE Mid-West Regional Clinical Director, Dr Catherine Peters, in a week where the facility has averaged 117 patients on trolleys every day so far. In addition to HIQA's review to determine if another emergency department is needed in the region, Budget 2026 is also on track to be published in the coming weeks. Ennistymon based MidWest Hospital Campaign Spokesperson Marie McMahon says the direction of both should be clear.

It's feared HIQA's review of emergency care capacity in the MidWest will face further delays. The report to determine if another emergency department is needed in the region was originally due in May, but has been pushed back to next month to factor in hospital bed capacity projections for 2040. The minutes of HIQA's latest board meeting however has revealed it's "uncertain about the impact additional planned private care will have in the region", with the new Bon Secours Hospital in Ballysimon to open next month. Friends of Ennis Hospital Chair Angela Coll says it's extremely frustrating.
HSE MidWest's Regional Executive Officer says the Government must ensure this region has parity with the rest of the country. It comes as the HIQA review of emergency capacity in the Midwest, which will examine the case for a second emergency department here, is due to be published next month. HSE MidWest's submission to HIQA during the public consultation process stated that any further expansion of UHL beyond the current inpatient bed capacity plan would raise "significant challenges and complications". Speaking during a visit to Clare, HSE MidWest Regional Executive Officer Sandra Broderick says the situation here will improve if continued investment is provided along with staffing increases.

There's a call for the Government to provide clarity as to whether a new Model three hospital in the Midwest will be included in the National Development Plan. The revised plan gives the Department of Health an allocation of €9 billion for 2026 to 2030 but a list of projects to be supported isn't expected to be finalised for several months. The findings of HIQA's review of emergency capacity in this region are due in September and hopes for a new emergency department were dealt a significant blow in May when HSE MidWest made a submission that didn't recommend such a facility. Scariff-based Independent MEP Michael McNamara believes residents of Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary deserve a straight answer on the matter.

In this episode I chat with Claire McCreedy from the ACT. Claire grew up in an unpredictable and emotionally unsafe environment, with an alcoholic mother and parents who lived quite reclusively. From a young age, her nervous system was wired for survival. Social skills didn't come naturally, home life was isolating, and by fourteen, alcohol became her tool for managing social situations. As life progressed, Claire found herself in a domestic violence relationship and continued to use alcohol as a way to soothe anxiety and emotional overwhelm. After separating from her partner, the loneliness she felt on weekends without her children became unbearable, she describes those weekends as “one weekend I'm a mother, the next weekend I don't know who I am.” Alcohol became a numbing mechanism to cope with that disconnection. Her turning point came when a new partner gently but firmly reflected back the reality of her drinking, expressing that he couldn't have that level of alcohol around his daughter. It sparked a powerful wake-up call.Claire began to educate herself about alcohol and got sober-curious. Today, at 42, she's over two years sober and thriving. She walks daily, uses breathwork to calm her nervous system, and is creating a life that's grounded in clarity, health, and self-awareness.For more resources such as coaching or to join the next HIQA challenge or retreat go towww.iquitalcohol.com.auFollow HIQA insta @howiquitalcohol Music for Podcast intro and outro written by Danni Carr performed by Mr CassidyIf you are struggling with physical dependancy on alcohol consider contacting a local AA meeting or a drug and alcohol therapist.
