In this episode I chat with Claire McCreedy from the ACT. Claire grew up in an unpredictable and emotionally unsafe environment, with an alcoholic mother and parents who lived quite reclusively. From a young age, her nervous system was wired for survival. Social skills didn't come naturally, home life was isolating, and by fourteen, alcohol became her tool for managing social situations. As life progressed, Claire found herself in a domestic violence relationship and continued to use alcohol as a way to soothe anxiety and emotional overwhelm. After separating from her partner, the loneliness she felt on weekends without her children became unbearable, she describes those weekends as “one weekend I'm a mother, the next weekend I don't know who I am.” Alcohol became a numbing mechanism to cope with that disconnection. Her turning point came when a new partner gently but firmly reflected back the reality of her drinking, expressing that he couldn't have that level of alcohol around his daughter. It sparked a powerful wake-up call.Claire began to educate herself about alcohol and got sober-curious. Today, at 42, she's over two years sober and thriving. She walks daily, uses breathwork to calm her nervous system, and is creating a life that's grounded in clarity, health, and self-awareness.For more resources such as coaching or to join the next HIQA challenge or retreat go towww.iquitalcohol.com.auFollow HIQA insta @howiquitalcohol Music for Podcast intro and outro written by Danni Carr performed by Mr CassidyIf you are struggling with physical dependancy on alcohol consider contacting a local AA meeting or a drug and alcohol therapist. HIQA is once again being urged to recommend another Emergency Department for the MidWest, when it publishes its landmark report, which is due in the coming days. The health watchdog has spent the last eight months reviewing emergency and urgent care capacity across Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary, and is expected to present its findings to the Health Minister this week. However HIQA has been unable to confirm if it will meet its target of publishing the report this month. Shannon Sinn Féin TD Donna McGettigan says the need for an ED in Clare is beyond clear.
An impending report to determine if another Emergency Department is needed in the MidWest is not expected to recommend which county it should be located in. HIQA's review of urgent and emergency care capacity in the region is due by the end of the month and will outline solutions to deal with issues such as persistent overcrowding and ambulance response times. However local campain group, Friends of Ennis Hospital believes that based on discussions with elected representatives and the health regulator, the location of any new ED would likely be left to government. Chairperson Angela Coll says our politicians need to speak up.

Fine Gael Minister Jennifer Caroll MacNeill's first trip to the Dooradoyle facility has come on foot of the publication of the interim report on HIQA's review examining the case for a second Emergency Department in the Midwest. The interim report, which was initially expected by the middle of February contains no findings, but rather outlines in greater detail the methodology HIQA is using as it conducts its review. Minister Caroll MacNeill has confirmed she expects the final review to be delivered in May as promised. While the overcrowding crisis shows few signs of abating at University Hospital Limerick, Government figures indicate a 63% drop in the number of people waiting for a bed there after the Bank Holiday weekend, compared to the previous bank holiday. While at the facility the Minister met with HSE Chief Executive Bernard Gloster and HSE Midwest Regional Executive Officer, Sandra Broderick, as well as local politicians and health campaigners. Bodyke Fine Gael Deputy Joe Cooney says he's made it known that the people of Clare want another hospital in the county.
The Minister for Health says regardless of the findings of the upcoming HIQA review, the focus should be on expanding the emergency care capacity of the Midwest region. The findings of a review into urgent and emergency care in the Midwest which will examine the case for a second emergency department are due to be presented to the Health Minister in May of this year. Following the publication of the review's interim report, Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has confirmed she expects the final review to be completed on schedule. Speaking to Clare FM during a visit to University Hospital Limerick, the Fine Gael Minister says the "throughput" seen in facilities across the country must be on display at UHL.
The Health Minister insists she'll be guided by the findings of the HIQA review examining the viability of a second emergency department in the Midwest. It follows the release of the interim report on the review which is due to be presented to the Minister in May. During her visit to the Dooradoyle facility today, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has met with local politicians and campaigners, and has inspected the 96-bed block currently under construction. Speaking to Clare FM, she says she excepts the HIQA review to be presented to her on schedule.
Minister Jennifer Carroll McNeill's visit comes after publication of an interim HIQA report into whether the MidWest region needs a second emergency department and as the HSE faces the threat of industrial action. John Cooke reports.

Doras CEO, John Lannon, says the state's failings are particularly evident on Clare's doorstep.

In this episode, Danni sits down with Chris Gimple from Clean Slate Clinic to talk about some of the things that shocked him in early sobriety. One of the biggest surprises was getting comfortable with boredom. Without alcohol, life can feel a little dull at times, especially when we've spent so long caught up in chaos. Chris opens up about how many of us unknowingly become accustomed to that sense of constant drama, and how adjusting to a calmer life takes time.Disturbed sleep patterns were another challenge, something many people experience when first quitting alcohol. Chris also describes what he calls the “lost puppy syndrome”—that feeling of not knowing what to do with yourself when drinking is no longer part of your life. But as the brain begins to reboot and adjust, things start to shift. He talks about the power of delayed gratification and how putting in the work leads to real, lasting rewards. Most importantly, he reminds us that change doesn't happen without action, and that a relapse doesn't mean you're back to square one and that it can be a therapeutic tool.
