Welcome to a special mini-episode of To All the YA I've Loved Before! This week, Jamie Krakover, an aerospace engineer by day and a sci-fi and fantasy writer by night, joins Kaycee to discuss her upcoming book Authority. Jamie shares her unique journey as an engineer and the author of the Tracker Sequence duology. We dive into the YA she's loved before, including the pivotal books that ignited her love for reading and writing, such as Ender's Game and The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott. Topics of discussion include the fascinating intersection of Jamie's engineering career and her writing process, and how she balances her dual roles and incorporates her STEM background into her narratives. Plus we explore how her Jewish heritage influences her storytelling, particularly in her debut novel Tracker 220, and how she navigates the complexities of technology and tradition. This week we wrap up the second series of our podcast, The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel. We finish The Enchantress and obviously, there is plenty to say. We discuss character arcs, Marethyu's identity, and Sophie's rather anticlimactic finish. Of course, we do throw in some horror and mispronunciation, but we do enjoy the ending of the series, and agree that this whole series was geared towards a slightly older age demographic than Percy Jackson. We've enjoyed our mythology, but we're really looking forward to our new series and the vampires and a completely different genre. Next week we will be reading chapters 1-13 of book 1 in our new series, the Twilight Saga.

We're back-to-back with Micah appearances on #Millennial - he had more to say, so we're here to listen! Kicking off Black History Month right, Stacey Abrams has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize! Who thought we'd ever regret not investing in GameStop? Professor Micah oversees our bastardized explanation of what happened with the stock market last week, and we share our thoughts on responsible investment. Micah sticks to trading on the stalk market in Animal Crossing, and Laura bet a few dollars on Dogecoin. We unpack an unpopular student loan forgiveness opinion from the Confessional, and a multifaceted conversation ensues about how complicated this issue is. Are federal student loans representative of predatory lending by the government? How has our relationship with politics changed over the last few years? We're more critical, more locally focused, and setting more boundaries with our consumption of cable news. Netflix is bringing a "shuffle play" feature to life in early 2021, which will allow streamers to opt into a shuffle cycle of content that Netflix deems relevant to us based on our watch history. Even though the shuffle option will allow you to skip items you're not feeling, how much confidence do we have in Netflix's recommendations algorithm? Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett have recorded a new album, but will also be featured in a documentary about Bennett's struggle with Alzheimer's. Our recommendations are all over the place this week: Pick up your dog's shit (Andrew), 'Anything for Selena (https://www.npr.org/podcasts/923101875/anything-for-selena) ' (Pam), Laura and Marc's WandaVision Q&A (Laura), and 'The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel (https://www.amazon.com/Alchemyst-Secrets-Immortal-Nicholas-Flamel/dp/0385736002/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1P0EAXBVEZYOA&dchild=1&keywords=nicholas+flamel&qid=1612286911&sprefix=mary+trump%2Caps%2C211&sr=8-3) ' (Micah). We revisit 2020's resolutions, and how they went off the rails. Is being a professional pothead a bad thing? Laura's certainly drinking less booze. Micah provides some great tips to stay motivated and hold ourselves accountable. Somehow we go on a tangent about Oat Milk. NO IDEA WHY!

First Draft Episode #203: Simon Curtis Simon Curtis, pop star, actor, and author of Boy Robot and its forthcoming sequel. Listen to his brand-new singles, “Graduate” and “Rainbow” now! Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode Simon’s first big gig was as a part of the children’s choir for a national touring production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Simon’s “It Gets Better” video for The Trevor Project is beautiful and heartbreaking and very worth a watch. Early on when he got to LA, Simon was able to audition for Johnny Wright, manager for acts like New Kids on the Block, the Backstreet Boys, N*SYNC, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and more. Simon starred in Spectacular! a Nickelodeon TV movie Simon made his first album, 8 Bit Heart, after challenges in his acting career threw him into a depression LeVar Burton from Reading Rainbow and Michael Scott, author of The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series, were two of the earliest voices encouraging Simon to write a novel Michael Strother, who became Simon’s editor at Simon Pulse, first reached out to Simon as a supportive fan of his music online as @CupcakeAndy I reference Sabaa Tahir’s author journey, where she spent six years writing her first novel, Ember in the Ashes, and then had to turn around and write the sequel in waaaaaay less time. Sabaa talks about this (and so much more!) in her episode of First Draft. Simon recorded and released R∆ while he was writing Boy Robot (the book) Ariana Grande’s “Thank U Next” is on the level with Simon’s purposeful cultivation of gratitude Simon’s song “Love” was a song that hit him like a lightning bolt Janet Jackson’s The Velvet Rope album is a full ALBUM, not a collection of singles Simon was obsessed with Swedish pop groups A Teens and Play Five years ago Simon discovered Fleetwood Mac, iconic band featuring Stevie Nicks, check our Rumours and be forever changed Kacey Musgraves’ album Golden Hour was so freaking rad and reshaped Simon’s taste in music Victoria Aveyard (author of the Red Queen series; listen to her First Draft interviews here and here) had a conversation about not asking people to read their books — Simon takes an opposite approach: “Bitch, read my book!” I will never stop crying watching the part of Netflix documentary, Knock Down the House, when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) gives herself the most badass pep-talk I want to hear from you! To leave a voicemail for a future episode, call 818-533-1998.
