Chapter One: Take Two

Divergent is a 2014 American dystopian science fiction action film directed by Neil Burger, based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Veronica Roth. The film is the first installment in The Divergent Series and was produced by Lucy Fisher, Pouya Shahbazian, and Douglas Wick, with a screenplay by Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor. It stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ashley Judd, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Tony Goldwyn, Ansel Elgort, and Maggie Q. The story takes place in a dystopian and post-apocalyptic Chicago where people are divided into distinct factions based on human virtues. Beatrice Prior is warned that she is Divergent and thus will never fit into any one of the factions. She soon learns that a sinister plot is brewing in the seemingly perfect society.Support the show

Welcome back to another Throwback Thursday episode!   Hard to believe, but my oldest son Ryan is graduating from High School! So for this Thursday, I really wanted to bring back this first episode I ever recorded with him, at the milestone of his 13th birthday, just before his bar mitzvah.    This revisited version also includes the speech Ryan wrote at his middle school graduation, where we spoke so openly about his challenges with feelings of depression and anxiety during that time in his life. I hope that Ryan being so open about how he was feeling also inspires you or anyone you may share this with to speak up this mental health awareness month, as we continue to break the stigma around getting help.   So join me today as we honor Ryan in celebrating his graduation and moving on to the next chapter of his life in college!   This Episode is Dedicated by: Dr. Monisha Vasa Dr. Monisha Vasa is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist, in practice since 2008. Currently, she spends her time serving as a volunteer clinical faculty member at the UC Irvine School of Medicine, under the Department of Family Medicine. She helps in the training of medical students and is an active member in the Medical Humanities program— where she participates actively in utilizing literature to support medical education.   With Dr. Vasa treating an array of mental health disorders, anxiety disorders, and much much more, she uses her special training for the well-being of many people, believing in her philosophy that a comprehensive understanding of each individual takes time, empathy, and attention to give them the best treatment possible.   Topics Discussed in this Episode:   Headstart, a special program for preschool-aged children from low-income communities that provides access to early childhood education The GATE Program (Gifted And Talented Education Program) national links and background information. Ryan participates in our local school district's program. Divergent Series by Veronica Roth “You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.” – Wayne Gretzky Erik Newton, The Together Show Sports Illustrated Kid Reporter, a unique program Ryan has applied to which gives selected children ages 10 – 14 an opportunity to write and broadcast about sports UCLA Bruin Woods where I was a counselor in college and where we all go to “camp” each summer as a family   Full Episode Show Notes Check out the full shownotes from the original episode here: Ep 18: YOLO (You Only Live Once) and other Milestone Reflections with Ryan Neale   Mother's Quest is a podcast for moms who are ready to live a truly E.P.I.C. life.   Join in for intimate conversations with a diverse group of inspiring mothers as they share how they are living an E.P.I.C. life, Engaging mindfully with their children (E), Passionately and Purposefully making a difference beyond their family (P), Investing in themselves (I), and Connecting to a strong support network (C).   Join our community of mothers to light the way and sustain you on your quest at https://www.facebook.com/groups/mothersquest/

Grab a tissue because we're in for another emotional episode (guess who cries twice? It's not Brenna) as we tackle a grounded, non-sensational depiction of the aftermath of a school shooting. Featuring astounding performances by Jenna Ortega and Maddie Ziegler with strong supporting roles for Modern Family's Julie Bowen and The Divergent Series' Shailene Woodley, The Fallout is powerful consideration of the lingering traumatic effects of gun violence. It's time to revisit the Divergent series and oh boy are we tired of the false conflict between Tris and Tobias! It's time to revisit the Divergent series and oh boy are we tired of the false conflict-Oh sorry, we fell into the same habit as Veronica Roth and just started repeating ourselves. Look folks, we bet you never thought you'd get an episode where Brenna apologizes to Suzanne Collins, but the lack of world building, the shallow attempt at dealing with Tris' PTSD and martyr complex and the overwhelming need for an editor in Insurgent has Brenna re-appraising her disdain for The Hunger Games.Thankfully the film has Shailene Woodley and her 31 year old love interest Theo James, plus a bevy of A-list actors (none of whom have anything to do) to make it bearable.  Plus: the struggle with 2nd entries in YA dystopias, frustration with the Christina subplot, and Woodley's chemistry with all of the boys who want to kill her, but not her boyfriend. Yeah, this isn't terrible; it's just so...meh.Wanna connect with the show? We had the pleasure of interviewing Keiynan Lonsdale over Zoom video!  Australian-raised, LA-cultured pop star Keiynan Lonsdale revisits the glory days of dance music on his new '70s-inspired release “Gods Of The Disco.” The hypnotic track is an electrifying take on disco, combining the most irresistible elements of the genre to ensure maximum action on the dance floor with each spin. Directed by Chris Coats and incorporating Anthony “Skvtch” Gilbert's impeccable choreography, Keiynan also debuts a dance-inducing music video for the new single. The queer multi-hyphenate, who wrote and conceptualized the video, embraces his sexuality throughout as he is flanked by half naked shimmering male dancers adorned with outrageous costumes. The intoxicating music video features Keiynan hitting the dancefloor giving nods to Michael Jackson's iconic moves. Keiynan Lonsdale's debut album Rainbow Boy, released May 2020, is a love letter to the queer, black community as well as to his younger self. Equipped with a polychromatic, retro-futuristic R&B flair and innovative pop, this 14-track album is a show-stopping display of inclusivity that “gives us hope for what pop music can do” (GQ UK). Keiynan Lonsdale, the Australian/Nigerian dancer, singer-songwriter, & actor, has quickly made a global name for himself as a multi-hyphenate performer across film, TV, fashion & music. His cinematic vision and powerful voice continue to push the boundaries on what it means to be a leading man in Hollywood, and an influential force to his generation and the LGBTQ+ community as multi-talented artists.Keiynan is already the face at the forefront of queer Hollywood. He's starred in Love, Simon (for which he won an MTV Movie Award), The Divergent Series, CW's The Flash and Legends Of Tomorrow (one of the first openly queer actors to play a superhero), judged on RuPaul's Drag Race and more, including the Alicia Keys-produced dance comedy, Work It. Lonsdale has won GQ Australia's “Actor of the Year” and an LGBT Centre Youth Advocacy Award. In 2019, he made his Paris Fashion Week runway debut with Louis Vuitton. He walked the 2019 MET Gala pink carpet in a custom gown covered in over a thousand handmade, embroidered butterflies, created by Indian designer Manish Arora (Katy Perry, Rihanna, Kate Moss). Keiynan is next set to star in both Lionsgate feature My Fake Boyfriend and STARZ Step Up Series with Neyo and Christian Millian. We want to hear from you! Lately I've been missing the days of reading as an adolescent when there were so many action/adventure book series (all that included great romantic subplots) like Ally Carter's Heist Society and Gallagher Girls, Divergent Series, Hunger Games, the Uglies series, the Maze Runner, The selection, etc. Now I'm in my twenties and I feel like all the best book series fall under the YA category. So I'm looking for a book series that has all the action, adventure and romance of the ones from my youth, but are more mature. I don't love fantasy, but enjoy dystopian, spy and government stories, and any other realistic adventure story. I read the memory police earlier this year and while I liked it, it wasn't as fast paced, and I didn't connect to the characters like I wanted to. Any thoughts? -Nostalgic Adult 2. I'm going on a trip to the Appalachian mountains at the end of July and I'm trying to gather some books to bring with me. I'm looking for books that take place either in the Appalachian mountains or the woods. So far, I'm bringing Bill Bryson's “A Walk in the Woods,” but I'd love some fiction recs. I'll pretty much read anything, but I'm not a fan of horror. My favorite books are thrillers, mysteries, found family, and memoir. Bonus points if they make great audio versions that I can listen to on the drive down there.  Thanks!  -Megs 3. I realize I am coming in a bit late here since Pride is in full swing now, but since it deserves recognition all year-round here goes anyway! After coming out of a long-term “normal” cis/hetero relationship, I have been finding my true self. Right before the panini-times struck the world, I started exploring poly-amourous relationships and within the last year I openly acknowledged that I am a bisexual woman. My poly-partners have been amazing additions to my life and truly helped hold me together in the last turbulent year. Now that the world is re-opening I'm now tentatively forging a friendship with one of my metamours- the partner of one of my partners – and we've both discovered that we're each new to this way of doing relationships and are trying to figure out how to co-exist peaceably with each other. She's already given me a great recommendation of a book centering on the poly-lifestyle so I'd love to be able to return the favor, as well as find reading material to help further my own journey of self-exploration. Fiction or non-fiction are welcome, but I'm mostly curious to see if there are any novels that feature characters in these types of relationships that are figuring it out. I'm not so much into romance myself but if it's an aspect of the story that's totally fine. Looking forward to seeing what you can come up with! Thank you for all you do to keep my reading lists overflowing! -Heather 4. hi! so in honor of pride month and almost a year of being more open about being nonbinary and using he/they pronouns, i would really enjoy something full of lgbt rep, especially a trans and/or nonbinary character/s. i don't really have anything specific, just preferably fiction and queer characters. also maybe a good happy ending or at least something that won't rip out my heart, tearing it to shreds and leaving me as an empty shell of what i was for weeks at the end, you know?  -Rey (he/him)  5. *Time sensitive – due by July 2nd*. Hi! My father-in-law is having a surgical procedure soon that has an estimated 6 weeks of recovery time. I'm looking for some good sci-fi books to keep him entertained during his recovery. He's a retired computer scientist and he's read a ton of classic sci-fi like Aasimov, Bradbury, and Heinlein. I'm pretty sure he's read some more recent sci-fi like Ready Player One, and I know he's not into military sci-fi. Any recs would be appreciated

This week's episode is the third (and last) installment in the Divergent Series. But where are the other podcast episodes on the two previous movies? We didn't do them, didn't wanna. Not sure what the plot is, something about a divergent doing some insurgenting until they reach an allegiant? Oscar and Carl jump into Allegiant with no understanding of the world, and then criticise it for being a confusing mess, and they might just, along the way, figure out who would watch this.

Ep 45: YOLO (You Only Live Once) and Other Milestone Reflections *Revisited* with Ryan Neale

Mother's Quest Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 5, 2018 69:38

I’m honored to bring you this Episode #45 of the Mother’s Quest Podcast, a conversation I shared first a little over a year ago, when my own son Ryan marked a big milestone in his life, his 13th birthday and the approach of his bar mitzvah. Recently, Ryan crossed another threshold, his middle school graduation, and in the weeks before this new milestone, he wrote a speech to capture the experiences and lessons learned from a challenging spring semester.  Though Ryan didn’t have the opportunity to address his class at graduation, I believe the messages of his speech, about moving from feelings of depression and isolation to curiosity and connection, could impact an even bigger audience through the power of podcasting. So, I decided to bring you his speech, in his voice, followed by our original podcast conversation from a year ago. I’m thankful to Ryan for giving me permission to share his speech with this community and for the gift of the conversation we had on the podcast a year ago. I hope the common themes and the honest messages from last year to now, of overcoming challenges, building trust, finding connection, and not letting fear stop you from living a YOLO life, reach all who need it. This episode dedicated by Monisha Vasa: This Milestone Reflections Revisited Episode also warranted, in my mind, a new dedication, from someone with a unique perspective on the topics Ryan explores. I found who I was looking for in Monisha Vasa, a psychiatrist, mother, and writer who dedicated the episode to her courageous patients. Learn more about Monisha’s work at www.monishavasa.com and www.mindful-healing.com. YOLO (You Only Live Once) and other Milestone Reflections with Ryan Neale Original Episode Show Notes As Ryan approached his bar mitzvah, a year ago in April 2017, becoming a “Jewish adult” and entering his teens, we decided we would spend his thirteenth birthday together, going on a “milestone hike” ‘and then recording an episode of the podcast at a recording studio in San Francisco. It was a magical day of reflection, revelations for both of us, and a lot of laughter. I’m honored to bring highlights of all of that to you through this episode. You’ll hear Ryan share eloquently and honestly about his appreciation for the support that helped him conquer his developmental delays, how his own fears manifest in his life today, and how, in his next chapter, he wants to trust more and move through his fear. Because, he says, he wants to live with a YOLO (You Only Live Once) mindset. Ryan reflects on snapshot moments from his life, about his deep love for his younger brother, his experience finding a group of friends and a school program where he could thrive, receiving the academic achievement award, and the moments he hopes he’ll be able to look back on with pride at the next milestone. Ryan also gets a turn to ask me his own questions and give me feedback. I had an opportunity to share the biggest lesson my mother gave me, to always appreciate every stage of life you’re in when you’re in it, and acknowledge what I wish I could change about myself.   I also heard Ryan reflect back that in being “a little selfish” in creating Mother’s Quest I’ve given him so much more than if I only focused on my children. There’s a game we play with Erik Newton (whose studio we recorded in) as our game show host, a lot of laughter and some comical out-takes that you’ll want to stick around for at the very end. I felt so blessed to create this experience with Ryan and to share it with you. I take with me the importance of marking these rites of passage thoughtfully with our children, what a privilege it is to be witness to the development of another human being as a mother, a reminder of how powerfully our children see and know us and help us grow, and what fun it can be to create new experiences together. Ryan and I will never forget how we spent his thirteenth birthday together. We hope you’ll leave this episode inspired to mark a milestone in your life, with your children, and make some life-long memories of your own. Topics discussed in this episode: Our meaningful and magical milestone hike through Laurelwood Park How you cannot see yourself fully through the mirror but can through your loved ones Life happens fast, appreciate every aspect of your life as you’re in it because before you know it you’ll be on to the next Take life in small steps and the snapshot moments that Ryan most remembers from his 13 years Ryan’s love for his brother Jacob and what Ryan said the day Jacob was born The impact living my E.P.I.C. life has had on Ryan How things that are scary can at the same time be beautiful and Ryan’s commitment not to let his fears stop him from living his YOLO (You Only Live Once) life The pact Ryan and I made to help us with our biggest area of growth, our management of time Resources mentioned in this episode: Headstart, a special program for preschool aged children from low-income communities that provides access to early childhood education The GATE Program (Gifted And Talented Education Program) national links and background information. Ryan participates in our local school district’s program. Divergent Series by Veronica Roth “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky Erik Newton, The Together Show Sports Illustrated Kid Reporter, a unique program Ryan has applied to which gives selected children ages 10 – 14 an opportunity to write and broadcast about sports UCLA Bruin Woods where I was a counselor in college and where we all go to “camp” each summer as a family Announcements: Milestone Rite of Passage Coaching Session The focus of today’s episode is about honoring the milestones in our lives. The path of awakening involves letting go of limiting self-concepts, accepting the mighty companions who desire to join in shared purpose, and intensive mind-training. Once the mind is clear and focused, deeper realms of healing can be approached, including facing the unconscious guilt in the mind, the death-wish, and the fear of love. For a deep experience of healing, we recommend renting the movie and watching it after you’ve listened to this talk! Amanda and Jenn discuss Hallmark movie read-alikes, gift recommendations, kids' London reads, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Libby and Bookaxe.   Questions 1. Hello Book Riot goddesses! We're getting dangerously close to the holiday season, which is why it hit me I have less than two months to finish the Book Riot reading challenge! I'm doing pretty well overall, but am now left with the really difficult (ie out of my comfort zone) books - and I need your help. I have four books left to tackle: a book about sports, a book published by a micropress, and a book of translated poetry on a theme other than love. I'm a queer, latinx, feminist grad student currently earning my MSc in paleontology and the history of women in science. Normally, I gravitate towards fantasy, scifi, YA, and historical fiction/romance (I'm very much about reading as escapism). When I'm not reading fiction, I love popular science books and history books (especially about non-western countries). Maybe my tastes can meet these book riot prompts somewhere in the middle? Note: I'm bilingual (spanish/english) so books translated from or available in Spanish are also super welcome! --Michelle Barboza-Ramirez   2. I hope it's not too late to ask for recommendations! My mom has asked for books for Christmas but I don't know what to buy her! She likes narrative nonfiction, like The Elephant Whisperer, Unbroken, and The Boys in the Boat. She also likes Jodi Picoult and reads a lot of historical fiction (The Red Tent, All the Light We Cannot See, and News of the World are some of her favorites). She's generally read most of the super buzzy bestsellers of the past few years for her book club, so new, backlist, and/or under-the-radar picks would be awesome! Thanks! --Katie   3.  Hi Amanda and Jenn! We are traveling to London for Christmas with our daughters, ages 13 and almost 11, and I would love it if before we go, they could develop a deeper appreciation for (or at least understanding of) the historical significance of the city than they've gleaned from Harry Potter or schoolbooks. My ideal vision would be to visit some place like the Tower of London or Kensington Palace or the replica of the Globe Theater, they would say, "Oh yeah! I know about that place from my book." I want them to have some reference points other than what I've told them. Both girls are avid readers of YA fiction, and they especially love the fantasy and mystery genres -- Harry Potter, anything Rick Riordan, the Divergent Series, the Flavia de Luce series, and Nnedi Okorafor are just some examples of books/authors they love. My older daughter also branches out to YA literary fiction such as "The Hate You Give" by Angie Thomas and "Between Shades of Gray" by Ruta Sepetys. Can you recommend any YA fiction in which London features prominently? I was wondering if "My Lady Jane" might fit the bill, but I don't really have any ideas beyond that. Any recommendations you can provide would be greatly appreciated. You don't have to worry about making different recommendations for their ages -- they exchange books all the time, and the younger one has the maturity and skills to read what her sister does. Thanks so much for all you do, and keep up the great work! --Courtney   4. Hi Jenn and Amanda, I am writing in to request read-alikes to cheesy Hallmark-esque holiday romance movies. I personally don't celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or any of the religious/commercial holidays of winter but my kryptonite is the seasonal holiday tv entertainment. I especially love when they are set in the past and/or have themes of mistaken/disguised identity or leads that hate each other and then slowly grow to love and respect each other. Some of my favorite series/movies include When Calls the Heart, One Small Hitch, A Christmas Kiss 1 and 2, Snow Bride, While You Were Sleeping, and A Royal Christmas. Bonus points for books available on audio with non-irritating narrators so I can listen during my commute. Thanks so much! --Sel   5. Hello! I have been under a fair amount of stress lately with a job change and the realities of adult-ing which has lead to some trouble sleeping. During these restless nights I have been reading a lot of fiction (which is great) - but I figure I might benefit from using this reading time to read some non-fiction about stress management, mindfulness, or meditation. Are there any well written beginner guides for these subjects (or others) that you would recommend? Thank You! --Ariel   6. Hey Jenn and Amanda I was raised in a very fundamentalist religious environment where homophobia, racism and misogyny were interwoven into the rhetoric and doctrine. I have since broken away from it but still feel an involuntarily discomfort and, at times, lack of understanding when reading about some of these issues. I want to overcome this discomfort of and develop empathy for such topics and am hoping you can recommend me books that will expose me to any or all of these issues. YA or adult, any genre. I do prefer fiction to nonfiction but am open to highly readable nonfiction. Thanks! --Haley   7. I want to share my love of reading with my dad, especially as he is now retired and needs things to do during the long winter months. Unfortunately, I've never had much luck getting him to pick up a book, even when it seems tailored to his interests. The one book I've seen him read and re-read is The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, a slim book of poetry by an 11th century Persian dude. This self-proclaimed non-reader can quote about half the book from memory and likes to weave snippets of it into daily conversation. I suspect he has a soft spot for old poetry and/or philosophy. Can you recommend anything that might have a similar feel to it? Amanda, Jenn, and guest expert Kelly Jensen discuss all things YA in this week's episode of Get Booked! This episode is sponsored by Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller and Book of the Month.   Questions   1. I just finished Honesty by Seth King. It was intense, heavy and unlike any other literary experience I've had to date -- I was stuck inside the brain of Cole Furman and I couldn't get out for 291 pages not matter how uncomfortable, intense, exciting, lonely or heartbreaking it was! It's a story of young love. It's is also a story of fear and pain. Cole and Nick are falling in love and they are also both closeted LGBTQ nineteen-year- old's with everything to lose in the South. King acknowledged the need for more books featuring more diverse couples that don't live deep in the romance genre. Until now it's something I never thought twice about. THE QUEST: I want to read more stories of diverse couples that lives closer to the YA genre and maybe even one with a happy ending, but not required. Love the podcast! Shout out to Fiona for introducing me to Book Riot! --Jenna   2. Do you have recommendations for YA books that don't include romance? My almost 13 year old daughter is a somewhat reluctant reader, but likes books with strong female characters and prefers no icky love stuff :) She recently read the Divergent Series and enjoyed it, but could have done without the romantic relationships. Thanks! --Julie   3. I've just read The Selection and Cinder and am looking for more YA dystopian Cinderella stories. Any suggestions? --Shaina   4. Hi! I love listening to your podcast and adding tons of books to my TBR list. I read a book last summer called Fiercombe Manor by Kate Riordan and loved it. I would call it a romance/mystery/ghost story. Can you recommend some similar books for my summer reading list? I love YA, so am open to that as well! Thanks! --Rebecca   5. I used to read YA books all the time when I was little, but once I started high school I decided in all my teenage snobbishness that YA was beneath me, and I'd only be reading the classics... and The Perks of Being a Wallflower (obviously). Now I'm in my 20s working on my doctorate in classics, and no longer want to or feel the need to be so snobby. I've recently discovered bookstagram, and I'm constantly seeing all these beautiful covers of YA novels. The only thing is what to read? I tried reading The Raven Cycle, but I found the characters to be so shallowly written. And the whole extreme/unrealistic wealth and privilege just seemed so far fetched. I thought I might have better luck with fantasy YA but there is so much and I have no idea how to sort the good from the bad. --Keira   6. First, let me tell you I love your podcast! Second, I would love your recommendations (obvs). My son and I just read a great YA book called Away Running by David Wright and Luc Bouchard. It resonated with my son who is sports-obsessed because it's about football but it is deeper than most kids' sports books because it takes place in Paris amid racial tensions and immigrations issues. It's deep. I'd love more books like this to engage my son...some sports but more than just sports. Bonus if there are diverse characters (as there are in Away Running) because my son is biracial and seeing himself reflected in the characters allows for us to have even better conversations after reading. Do you like music? Do you like action? Do you like fast cars speeding around and crashing which isn’t Fast and the Furious? Well this is the film for you! Baby Driver is the new love child of Edgar Wright, known for his smash hit Cornetto Trilogy, including Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and the other one we don’t really talk about, World’s End. Baby Driver sheds Wright’s former acting duo, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, replacing them with rookie actor Ansel Elgort in the lead role of Baby, a getaway driver. Alongside Elgort is an all-star cast which beefs up an already tantalizing film, including Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx and Jon Bernthal. Next to Elgort is also love interest Debora, played by Lily James. It might not seem like a big deal, but honestly one of my favourite things about this film is that the love story is actually good. It doesn’t feel forced, and is projected in a totally realistic and understandable way; if realistic is driving cars and robbing banks of course. It seems like a small detail, but so many films nowadays overcomplicate their love stories, or just create awful nonsensical ones. Baby Driver is pretty much a movie length music video, which isn’t a bad thing. Nearly every action, such as doors slamming, guns shooting, and tires screeching, are done to the beat of the music playing at the time. Everything is timed perfectly, and you can tell the care that has been put into making it. This in itself resonates very well with me, as although I don’t rob banks myself or have an ear problem, I understand where Baby is coming from. I love having music go to the beat of what I’m doing, and if it’s not, I’ll change what I’m doing so it is to the beat. The motivation of Baby is clear, with exposition being simply dropped through conversation, or through snippets of artistic flashbacks. You really feel for baby, as you know his struggle is honest and important to him, not just some unmotivated kill fest. The important thing this film does really well though is the characters. They’re written well, and there comedy is perfect, timed with the music and beats of the story. I don’t laugh out loud often in films, and if I do it’s if a lot of people are around, but for Baby Driver there was only about ten of us, and we we’re laughing all the way through. Good characters are likeable, and mean characters are likeable, that’s how convincing everyone in the film is written and acted. Of course, special mention needs to be given to the star, Ansel Elgort. Known for Fault in our Stars and the Divergent Series, Elgort has really come out of his shell in Baby Driver. His performance is perfectly timed, down to the second with his movements, and all in all is an enthralling display of acting. Even minor characters in the film are well made and funny, like the post office lady and the old lady Baby hijacks. The music isn’t the only production value which shines in this film. The long shots and actual shooting of the music based scenes are easily standouts in the film, being the most exciting and tense, as well as just a jam session. I found the start of the film quite segmented. However it works in the grand scheme of things in setting up the world that Baby resides in clearly. The film also has some shocks in it, which I wasn’t expecting, such as truly brutal violence at times. The film doesn’t take no nonsense, meaning nothing is taken lightly or played out unrealistically. Baby’s and the other characters’ fates, as bank robbers, do not end riding into the sunset. All in all the film is just a fun time, and is one of the few that you’re simultaneously holding your breath, laughing and going, “wow, how did they do that?” The overall production values are top notch, making the film look sublime. The role of the antagonist changes constantly, meaning it's never just one person. This adds some real dimension to characters, showing like people, they can change. Some great throwbacks to Wright's older projects are put in, including one relating to the music video the film is based on. I highly recommend this film to nearly anyone. If you just want a good time with a bunch of laughs with a killer soundtrack, and can put up with some brutal violence, this is the film you didn't know you were waiting for. Sarah Mason and Jake Essoe of The Harold & Maudecast review the film BABY DRIVER, written and directed by Edgar Wright (SHAUN OF THE DEAD) starring Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jamie Foxx and Jon Hamm. Baby (Elgort) is a reluctant yet talented wheel man coerced into driving for crime boss Doc (Spacey) to pay off an old debt. Baby's unique use of music makes him unstoppable behind the wheel but draws suspicion from the crew. When Baby meets the woman of his dreams, Deborah (Lily James) he must decide how much he's willing to risk before it's too late for a new life. BABY DRIVER is the not your usual bank heist, action film. It's highly stylized and makes clever use of its soundtrack--which is essentially the other lead character in the film. Edgar Wright, who along with collaborators Simon Pegg and Nick Frost gave us the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, SHAUN OF THE DEAD, HOT FUZZ and AT WORLD'S END, makes an uncommon but brilliant transition to action genre proving once again, a good film is all about the writing. The story drives this picture along with some great performances. With one fell swoop Elgort graduates from teen drama prince (THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, The DIVERGENT SERIES) to Oscar worthy actor. He's fantastic as the questionably quirky, music dependent orphan whose found his way out of his hard luck circumstances with love. We highly recommend this film. Go see it in theaters it warrants a big screen view. 8.6/10 For more reviews visit www.thehmcnetwork.com

I’m so honored and excited to bring you this Episode #18 of the Mother’s Quest Podcast with a very special guest, my own son Ryan Neale. One of the great lessons I’ve learned is the importance of marking milestones and honoring endings so that you can thoughtfully open a new chapter. As Ryan approaches his bar mitzvah in April, becoming a “Jewish adult” and entering his teens, we decided we would spend his thirteenth birthday together, going on a “milestone hike” ‘and then recording an episode of the podcast at a recording studio in San Francisco. Topics discussed in this episode: Our meaningful and magical milestone hike through Laurelwood Park How you cannot see yourself fully through the mirror but can through your loved ones Life happens fast, appreciate every aspect of your life as you're in it because before you know it you'll be on to the next  Take life in small steps and the snapshot moments that Ryan most remembers from his 13 years Ryan’s love for his brother Jacob and what Ryan said the day Jacob was born The impact living my E.P.I.C. life has had on Ryan How things that are scary can at the same time be beautiful and Ryan’s commitment not to let his fears stop him from living his YOLO (You Only Live Once) life The pact Ryan and I made to help us with our biggest area of growth, our management of time Erik’s takeaway: “Parenting is an opportunity to be vulnerable in a way that is unprecedented.” Resources mentioned in this episode: Headstart, a special program for preschool aged children from low-income communities that provides access to early childhood education The GATE Program (Gifted And Talented Education Program) national links and background information. Ryan participates in our local school district’s program. Divergent Series by Veronica Roth "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." - Wayne Gretzky Erik Newton, The Together Show Sports Illustrated Kid Reporter, a unique program Ryan has applied to which gives selected children ages 10 - 14 an opportunity to write and broadcast about sports UCLA Bruin Woods where I was a counselor in college and where we all go to “camp” each summer as a family Announcements:  I hope this conversation sparked something that will inspire you to mark a milestone in your E.P.I.C. life. The futuristic film opens with Naomi Watts' character, Evelyn, now in charge of walled-in Chicago after the demise of Jeanine, and she's trying to provide 'justice' for past sins against the members of Erudite by conducting public trials in which they're put to death at the whim of angry mobs.  Those who think that Evelyn is merely a replacement for Jeanine in Machiavellian tactics splinter off into their own group, the Allegiant, led by Johanna (Spencer), and civil war is about to break out for control of the city.  Meanwhile, Tris and her cohort of rebellious heroes manage to scale the walls of the city to try to find something or someone that will remedy the situation on the outside, eventually leading to an encounter with the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, led by David (Daniels), who instructs Tris that their entire existence has served as an experiment for the last 200 years in trying to purify the damaged genetics of humanity, and that Tris' purity as a Divergent means that the experiment is a success.  However, with Tris' home and nearly everyone she cares about about to kill each other, and an organization that's supposed to be looking out for their well-being showing that they might not be the benevolent rescuers she is hoping for, she's going to have to take matters into her own hands if she wants to fulfill that role of savior of humanity she's been destined to be since birth.

The guys stumble onto their new band name this week before they talk about Evan’s vacation to LA, which involved lots of decadent eating. After a Garfield tangent, Evan and Kris ponder why so many people seem to get shot in the back during THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT – Part 1, a story they didn’t realize would be told in two parts. Kris then describes how Jeff Daniels is like his character in THE MARTIAN only evil, and about why he’s “one of those bad guys who has an adjective.” With all the film’s issues, Evan shares why he still prefers the series to THE HUNGER GAMES. Following a tangent about westerns, specifically YOUNG GUNS, the episode transitions into Dave and Evan discussing another 80s movie: WORKING GIRL. Evan has no idea how much Dave loves the film, and is totally unprepared for how well Dave can quote it. The two of them enjoy spoilerpiecing it for Kris with talk about Harrison Ford’s grimace, its memorable lines, and its portrayal of workplace politics.

Continuing to play to Callum's strengths this week, there are two new animated movies out. As if it wasn't already well set up for him with a new Dreamworks Animation out, Kung Fu Panda 3, there's also a new Disney film (Zootopia / Zootropolis / whichever it is wherever you're from) which has already set the standard by which to judge all other movies this year - or, at least, that's what Callum says.
