Welcome back to TV Show: In Space! REWIND! In this episode, we cover Star Trek: The Original Series season 2 episodes The Gamesters of Triskelion, A Piece of The Action, The Immunity Syndrome, A Private Little War, and Return to Tomorrow. We also talk a little bit about Wrath of Khan! We have an email address! tvshowinspace@gmail.com
Would this be a good episode to watch while high? Ryan and Brady discuss the (mostly aesthetic) positives of this late Season 2 TOS episode and generally have a good time talking about a shaggy thing that isn't really very good, but it's got those TOS vibes. Sometimes, that's all you need.

It's gangsters and space amoebas for this week's Star Trek Watchcast, as the crew beams down to Chicago II to meet with President Capone in A Piece of the Action, and the ship falls helplessly into an energy draining void in The Immunity Syndrome! CHAPTERS: (00:00:00) - The Nextlander Watchcast Episode 146: Star Trek: A Piece of the Action and The Immunity Syndrome (00:00:17) - Intro. (00:05:29) - Brad has a Star Trek uncle. (00:09:52) - The history behind A Piece of the Action. (00:20:04) - Let's talk about what is actually going on here. It's a gangster planet. (00:25:52) - Boss Okmyx. (00:29:35) - There are maybe a few too many escape attempt scenes for one episode. (00:35:13) - Jojo Krako's Bizzaro Adverture-o. (00:38:48) - The slow morphing of Kirk into gangster mode. (00:48:06) - That's a big stun setting, and is this really how we're leaving these people? (00:56:23) - Final thoughts. (00:57:34) - Break! (00:58:09) - We're back, and it's time for The Immunity Syndrome. (01:00:26) - There are basically no production notes for this episode. (01:30:00) - Some very good tension as we fly through the space amoeba. (01:38:08) - Driving the Enterprise out of an exploding amoeba, and a weird final note. (01:45:04) - Final thoughts. (01:47:02) - Episodes for next week, and outro.

Star Trek's universe is bizarre and horrifying at times. Cosmic beings summon orcs to stab you in the back, alternate versions of your flagship get stuck in a wormhole, nonlinear entities get taught about time through memories of baseball, love and death. It's all a bit weird and we're going to revel in it today by talking about cosmic horror. Ships full of Vulcans get a rough time today, starting with The Immunity Syndrome where a space amoeba kills them and the rest of a solar system. Can the crew discover a solution when their energy and the ship's are rapidly dwindling? The next cosmic entity is Nagilum, who is self-aware, godlike and a real jerk! The Enterprise has to work out a solution to get this bastard off their back, but it might mean their own deaths! Wesley picks the best time to take a break from the Conn and we get some camera experiments to distract from this being a bottle episode. Finally we're back to tormenting a ship of Vulcans in Impulse, where they're driven into a mad, zombie-like rage! Not only are these T'Pol's old colleagues, but she's also infected. Can the crew survive until help comes? Also Trip & Mayweather get their fanciest gold spacesuits on to go all Minecraft on some asteroids. 00:01:33 What Non-Star Trek Thing We've Been Enjoying 00:15:02 Talking about Cosmic Horror 00:17:58 Star Trek: The Original Series “The Immunity Syndrome” 00:43:15 Star Trek: The Next Generation “Where Silence Has Lease” 01:11:03 Star Trek: Enterprise “Impulse” If anyone could do a cover of the Enterprise theme tune based on either the Donnie Darko “Mad World” or “Cotton Eye Joe” that would be amazing and we would give you a shout out for performing such madness. In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode The Immunity Syndrome, which aired on January 19, 1968, and occurred on Star Date 4307.1. The Enterprise is diverted to investigate the mysterious cessation of communication with the Gamma 7A star system. While on its way, Spock telepathically senses the destruction of a starship manned by Vulcans. The Enterprise encounters a strange field that drains all mechanical or biologically generated energy. Spock finds that the zone of darkness is a negative energy field. They send a probe that penetrates the organism and discovers it to be living and filled with protoplasm. Spock sets out in the shuttlecraft and heads for the nucleus. Spock establishes that the organism has stored enough energy to reproduce and that the 40 chromosomes in the nucleus are ready to come together. The Enterprise is sucked into the organism. But Kirk fills a probe full of antimatter and plants it in the nucleus. As the Enterprise backs out of the organism before it blows up, it detects Spock's shuttlecraft and locks on a tractor beam. The explosion rocks the ship, but it survives, and the stars appear on the viewing screen again. Somehow, the shuttlecraft survives as well. Compliance Takeaways: 1. Whoa buddy, okay, so, Sarah forgot to upload this on Wednesday. Whoops. Anyways, Carrie and Sarah get a little out of hand here. There are no trigger warnings for the episode but do prepare yourself for far too many references to youth group, and the many incorrect things they taught there in the late 90s and early 00s. Also, Sarah's head cannon is fed even more fuel for the Bones love triangle. Which if you ask her is the best part of the whole show.
While investigating the loss of the Starship Intrepid and an entire star system containing billions of inhabitants, the Enterprise discovers the cause to be a giant space amoeba that is about to reproduce. In an effort to figure out how to destroy it before it kills billions more, Captain Kirk must send a shuttlecraft on a suicide mission into the heart of the amoeba, and he must decide which of his trusted officers is more qualified to go: Mr. Spock or Dr. McCoy. After being rushed into production when NBC-TV picked up “Star Trek” for the balance of the second season, “The Immunity Syndrome” feels contrived, lacks finesse and qualifies as one of the weaker episodes of the series. But it still has its merits, the first of which is the amazing visual effects, which were groundbreaking when it aired in 1968 and still hold up to this day. “The Immunity Syndrome” also contains great dramatic conflict, as Captain Kirk agonizes over which of his closest friends he must send to their uncertain death. Does your favorite sci-fi show have an episode where people seem to vanish with next to know trace? How do you know? Maybe they just never noticed?! Amid telepathic explosions, we continue our “Best of TOS” series, deep-diving into an episode that puts the Enterprise in the path of a galaxy destroying organism that drains the energy of everything it encounters. Rest and refuge on Starbase 6 will have to wait, as we review the season two original series Star Trek episode, “The Immunity Syndrome”.
The Immunity Syndrome was the eighteenth episode of Star Trek's second season to air, with a single celled organism threatening to engulf the galaxy. In this episode Gerry and Iain discussed some unusual crew behaviour. When the USS Intrepid, a ship crewed entirely by Vulcans, disappears investigating a new phenomenon, the exhausted Enterprise crew are tasked with investigating the situation. With Spock and McCoy competing to lead a one-man suicide mission, Kirk must decide which of his friends to save and which to allow to proceed alone into the core of the creature. The Immunity Syndrome was directed by Joseph Pevney, his last of fourteen Star Trek episodes. The writer was Robert Sabaroff, who only contributed this one story to the series, but returned for The Next Generation. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered whether the virus could have been combatted by better social distancing. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. The Immunity Syndrome was released in 1968. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on CBS All Access in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

This Week! It's the Immunity Syndrome. Ken deep dives into Star Trek as either Hard or Soft Science. Since this episode is the final episode with director Peveny Matt talks about how actors changed in the 60's due to Method acting from where they once were. We discuss summer reruns. We debate the idea that Vulcans can feel the deaths of Vulcans across the galaxy. Is it possible? And then we discuss Sybock cause why not? All this and so much more! Give this great episode a listen.
While checking in on a planet previously visited by humans, Kirk and Spock discover a world of would-be 1920s Chicago mobsters ("A Piece of the Action"). Following that, The Enterprise is plagued by a massive single-cell organism ("The Immunity Syndrome"). (Please pardon the slight echo of Mike's line.) The Enterprise is on the hunt for a single cell organism. Won't be hard to find - it's 11,000 miles long. Sure it's alive, but can the Enterprise kill it? Find out when we put The Immunity Syndrome into the Mission Log. Got something to say?
