Along with taking a behind the scenes look at both podcasts, we'll talk about our motivation behind these shows. A grant from the Chemours Belle plant will fund STEM education for area students. And the mountain community of Helvetia prepares to usher out Old Man Winter…on today's daily304. #1 – From WVNS-TV – The West Virginia University Institute of Technology has announced a partnership with Chef Paul Smith. The partnership will be related to the school's two-year culinary program that is hosted at the WVU Tech's Beckley campus that opened in 2020, and is offered through Potomac State College. Paul Smith was the first West Virginian to be a James Beard Foundation award finalist and he operates various restaurants in Charleston. “The partnership with Chef Paul Smith will promote and facilitate our goals of improving culinary skills of students, diversifying our curriculum and fostering community involvement through enhanced hospitality opportunities in our state,” said Chef Devin Noor, program director and teaching assistant professor of culinary arts. “Chef Paul not only brings enhanced culinary techniques but also creativity, dedication and passion that will greatly enhance student experience at WVU Tech.” Read more: https://www.wvnstv.com/top-stories/wvu-tech-culinary-program-announces-partnership-with-chef-paul-smith/ #2 – From CSR WIRE – The Chemours Company's Belle plant recently awarded a nearly $99,000 Vibrant Community grant to Explore the New Manufacturing as part of the company's commitment to invest $50 million in its communities to increase access to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills, safety initiatives, and sustainable environment programs by 2030. The investment will directly benefit middle and high school students participating in educational learning programs designed to support STEM, technical careers, and development opportunities to fuel a high-potential, future workforce. The grant will benefit students in Explore's Kanawha Valley and Mid-Ohio Valley hubs. “As a chemistry company, we are passionate about inspiring the next generation of STEM professionals through early access to STEM education and mentoring,” said Nicholas Martino, Chemours Belle plant manager. “This is more important than ever with 800,000 expected job openings in STEM-related fields by 2031.” Read more: https://www.csrwire.com/press_releases/792986-chemours-belle-plant-invests-west-virginia-education-and-manufacturing #3 – From GAZETTE-MAIL – Who needs a shadow-skittish groundhog prognosticator popping up every frigid February when a burning effigy might better hasten the arrival of spring? (It also might not, but at least there's food, music, masks, and other amenities.) All of that (minus the groundhog) will be observed next month when the Swiss mountain community of Helvetia hosts its 57th annual Fasnacht. The pre-Lenten celebration is referred to as “the feast before the fast” during which an effigy of Old Man Winter is set afire to beckon and welcome the arrival of spring. The event takes place from 3 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, in the town square of the Randolph County community. Revelers can expect Appalachian and Swiss music, decadent foods, a parade illuminated by candle-powered lampions, and the opportunity to don colorful, homemade masks to scare away Old Man Winter (and compete for prizes). Then they dig into the Christian tradition, chatting through Anglo Saxon, Tudor, and Stuart ideas of Christmas, and how the festive season was forever changed by Oliver Cromwell and the puritan protectorate, all before it enjoyed a very jolly Victorian reinvention. Then, to cap things off, Martin tells an all-new story for the season, "A Song of Oak and Holly."The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Monday, Dec. 25 Step back in time with videos from The History Project. Learn about the origins of the Swiss mountain community of Helvetia, Blenko Glass, and Stone & Thomas department store…on today's daily304. #1 – From THE HISTORY PROJECT – Appalachian heritage is known to be spread among German, English, and Scots-Irish cultures, but a tiny town in West Virginia represents a different European union, Switzerland. Helvetia was founded by Swiss immigrants after the Civil War to create better lives for themselves in a new mountainous home. Their traditions and culture still survive, particularly in the form of Fasnacht, a pre-Lenten masquerade ball featuring traditional music as the revelers scare away Old Man Winter. The History Project is the daily304's presentation of famous people, places and events that shaped West Virginia. Watch the video on our YouTube channel, and don't forget to hit that subscribe button! Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bR9AnWL09g #2 – From THE HISTORY PROJECT – Because of its abundance of natural gas and its many rail lines, West Virginia became a bastion of glass making in the U.S. Many of the state's glass houses were, and still are, known worldwide for their fine artistry. Unfortunately, the industry changed and all of the Mountain State's handcrafted glassmakers have closed except one, Blenko Glass of Milton, which is the gold standard of hand blown glass, thanks to a history of shifting with the times and innovation. Watch this History Project video on the daily304's YouTube channel. Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXoNIQZeolY #3 – From THE HISTORY PROJECT – In this era of shopping from home, younger generations may not understand the glamor of dressing up to go downtown to pursue this activity. Each American city of every size had a variety of stores, offering the personality and flair of the owners and local tastes. West Virginia's cities shared in this commercial endeavor with store names that were locally beloved. But from them all, Stone & Thomas Department Store emerged from Wheeling to become the Mountain State's favorite place to shop and be seen. Take a peek into this fascinating bit of West Virginia history. You'll find this video and others on the daily304's YouTube channel. I'm so glad we have lots of things around our house that bloom when spring pushes out Old Man Winter. Now, if you have allergies, you probably don't look forward to Spring, but I hope you can at least enjoy some of its extravagant beauty. And it isn't just things to see. Every year, as I was rushing around the yard doing my chores, I would catch this beautiful scent every time I went past this one flowering bush. It's actually not far from our trash cans; not the most fragrant item in our yard. But, you know, I actually loved to catch the aroma of those flowers. I love it when the iris and the peonies start to bloom (I would have no idea what they were if my wife hadn't told me). They give off this inviting fragrance, like this fantastic yard perfume! I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Unforgettable You." A dear friend of ours wore this distinctive perfume for all the years we knew her - it was her trademark scent really. You could close your eyes and you knew it was her. At her funeral, our pastor talked about that perfume and the fragrant trail she always left wherever she went with the life she lived. She touched ours and so many others with the fragrance of her life. That's how it's supposed to be for anyone who belongs to Jesus Christ; leaving a trail of fragrant blessing wherever you go, with whomever you meet. How are you doing on that? Like those flowers in our yard, there should be this compelling beauty about your life that brings beauty into theirs. Even if there's a lot of trash in their life right now. The fact is, we all give off some kind of fragrance with the way we treat people, and the way we handle stress, and whether we make people feel more or less important, whether we bring sunshine into a situation or clouds. This would be a good day for you to evaluate: what kind of trail, what kind of life-fragrance do I leave? One man who shows us the kind of trail we're supposed to leave is written about in our word for today from the Word of God. It's in Acts 4:36-37. At a time when the just-birthed Christian community had a lot of needs it says, "Joseph...whom the disciples called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet." This man had left such a trail of encouragement the apostles actually changed his name to fit the impact he made. They called him "Mr. Encouragement." Listen, if people were to change your name to something that describes the effect you have on them, what would they call you? That name should reflect at least one of the qualities of what the Bible calls the "fruit of the Spirit"; that is, the kind of person the Holy Spirit makes you. According to Galatians 5:22-23, you should be giving off a fragrance of "Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." So how are you doing with that? Do people feel that you care about their need? Do you stop to weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice? Are you calm in the midst of the frenzy or are you just another stress-carrier? Do people feel important when they're with you because you listen to them and focus on them? Do they feel lifted up or put down by being around you? People are so starved for praise, for appreciation. If you give it, you'll be a magnet. And all this is so they will want to know why you're so different from everybody else in their busy, self-centered, self-promoting universe. A life with a beautiful fragrance gives you the opportunity to point them to the One who makes you that way because of how He has treated you, and that of course is Jesus. In the words of Matthew 5:16, they will "See your good works" and ultimately then they will "praise your Father in heaven." Your fragrant life can help lead them to eternal life. When people pass your way, would you let them catch a whiff of Jesus so they, too, can experience His love.

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 combines old-school components like a normally aspirated high-displacement V8 engine with specialized off-road tech to create a commonsense premium all-terrain truck. This past week America on the Road Co-Host Chris Teague had the opportunity to put the Silverado ZR2 through a grueling series of tests in the midst of the Maine winter. We're freezing just thinking about it. But what he discovered is worth knowing, and he'll reveal it all and a little more in this edition of America on the Road. Meanwhile, across the country, Host Jack Nerad road tested one of the darlings of the car tester set —the 2023 Mazda CX-5 Turbo. Crossovers don't usually get much respect from vehicle critics, but the exception is the CX-5. After an informative week behind the wheel of the newest CX-5, Nerad will tell what he found. Does the CX-5 deserve its “favorite son” status? Our special guest this week is extremely knowledgeable about the heavily revised 2024 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. Brian Wallace is a Volkswagen product planner and vehicle expert. Host Jack Nerad caught up with him at the Chicago Auto Show for a lengthy interview on the fraternal twins that bring a lot of new stuff to the midsize SUV party. In the news this week, a new study shows that the total ownership cost of an electric car is near that of a conventional internal combustion vehicle but dealers are having a tough time getting customers to do the math. Endurance News: New 2023 PTO Rankings Revealed & Dissected The Professional Triathletes Organization has released an update to their much-maligned pro ranking system. The result is...complicated. FEBRUARY 14, 2023 TIM HEMING For access to all of our training, gear, and race coverage, plus exclusive training plans, FinisherPix photos, event discounts, and GPS apps, sign up for Outside+. Ever since the Professional Triathletes Organization got some big-money backers and really put down its marker on the sport, one of the key ways to distribute that wealth has been through its rankings system. Being ranked number one in the PTO system is more than just about ego; it's worth its weight in gold. Last year, Kristian Blummenfelt and Anne Haug scooped $100,000 each as part of the $2 million payout, and the rankings are also used to provide the first four spots for each region in the lucrative Collins Cup, where another $1.5M is forked out in appearance fees. Bear in mind, this is all on top of prize money and sponsorship dollars. With some hard greenbacks to be fought over, it's little wonder that long course professionals care that the system is fair, and why – after receiving much criticism in its first three years – it's having an overhaul for 2023. But before we dive into the nitty-gritty of the new rankings, it's worth a quick recap of the old system and why there was a movement for change. What were the original PTO Rankings? Introduced in 2020, the original rankings took the average points score from a triathlete's best three races over the course of 12 months. So far, so easy, but all of those super-important points came from a triathlete's finish time [not position] that was held up against something the PTO called an Adjusted Ideal Time (AIT) for each race. The AIT was based on an algorithm that took in factors such as previous times on the course and how fast the course was on that specific day. Then, a few days after the race, the points would be issued. The AIT target time was worth 100 points. Go faster, you get more. Slower, you score less. There were a couple of minor tweaks over the system's three-year run, including upweighting certain races, but chiefly it remained the same time-based format. So, what was the problem? The problems were multiple, but an overriding issue was one of transparency. Triathletes and fans just didn't know – and it wasn't or couldn't be properly explained – how the algorithm worked. Understandably, this led to conspiracies about how the numbers were actually crunched and to much ire if you scored less than you thought you deserved. What's New in the 303: The Evolution of the Modern Bike Wheel 303 Cycling | The Evolution of the Bike Wheel Graphics and narrative by: A.V. Schmit Wheels and tires, wheels and tires, wheels and tires… Seems like on every ride that's all people can talk about these days. So, I thought it might be of value for the 303 Endurance community to write a primer about the evolution of bicycle wheel / tire design. While it usually makes sense to start most stories from the beginning. I think in this case, it makes more sense to start in the middle, as I would anticipate many readers have never ridden on a tubular tire shod hoop. 303 Cycling | Clincher TireUntil the advent of tubeless road wheels, the dominant standard was the clincher wheel. That consisted of a rim with a “hook” that turned inward toward the center of the wheel, and a tire that had a “bead” reinforced with wire, or in the case of foldable tires, reinforced with Kevlar or other aramid fibers like Vectran. When a tube is inserted into the tire and mounted on the rim and inflated, the tube presses the bead into the hook of the rim. It is that pressure that holds tire onto the rim. This is what most riders use and have likely ever used. Now, let's take a step back. Originally, tires and tubes for road bikes were a single unit. You may have heard the term “sew up” in the US or “single” in the UK and Australia. They both refer to a tubular tire. Essentially, a butyl or latex tube is contained within the casing, usually made from cotton fabric that has the tread bonded to it. Then the casing is sewn together with an additional strip of fabric glued over the seam. The rim, which has a shallow concave channel, is prepared with a number of layers of specialty tubular adhesive and the interior of the casing of the tire is also coated with a number of additional applications of the same adhesive. Then the tire is stretched over the rim and carefully centered over the channel and left to cure. 303 Cycling | Tubular TireNow, if you are thinking, “what a hassle.” You'd be right, gluing up tubular tires under the best of circumstances is a bit of a smelly mess. The advantages of tubular tires are they tend to be more supple and lighter than clinchers and can be ridden in an emergency when flat. The disadvantage is a puncture by the side of the road is a most unpleasant experience, even if you have an extra tire with you. Which is why tubulars are almost exclusively used by racers… as a chase car complete with mechanic and spare wheels is seldom far behind. But even race teams are beginning to embrace tubeless tire / rim combinations — In some case because of sponsor demands and in some cases for budget reasons. Eliminating the need for separate “race” and “training” wheels decreases the number of wheels needed to be maintained by the team's mechanic's staff. Hookless rim / wheels have been “a thing” in mountain bikes for nearly 10 years, but they are just growing in popularity in the road bike community, especially in gravel applications. A hookless rim is kind of what it sounds like. A rim profile that forgoes the traditional hook of a clincher rim / wheel but that also has “shoulders” that stretch the tire around its circumference to form a seal. The upside of a hookless rim is that is has shown to be more impervious to impact and it simplifies the construction process, especially in carbon fiber wheels. And according to ZPP, a leading manufacturer of high-performance carbon fiber bike wheels, reduces the cost of manufacturing. 303 Cycling | Tubeless TireWhat that means is that hookless rims are tubeless ONLY. It is NOT RECOMMENDED to use a tube and non-tubeless tire with a hookless rim. They require a tubeless tire that meets specific design criteria and materials. Generally speaking a tubeless tire is stiffer in the sidewall than a clincher tire, making it less supple. This is because the system depends on the tire stretching over the “shoulders” of the rim, mating the tire with the rim to form an airtight seal. And, like all tubeless tire / rim combinations, they require sealant and specialty rim tape. The sealant completes the tire system by preventing air from escaping through the pores and small imperfections in the tire. The adhesive-backed rim tape prevents air from escaping through the spoke holes of the rim. Sealant also provides a level of puncture protection by using the tire's internal air pressure to force sealant through small punctures when they occur. A word about sealant. Most sealants are made of natural or synthetic latex and contain cellulose, rubber particles or organic thickeners and glycol which acts as a liquid carrier for the suspended particles. Most are highly basic, not as in simple, but as in the opposite of acidic on the Ph scale. When the tire is punctured, the internal air pressure of the tire forces the liquid sealant is through the hole, and a small amount escapes. When this happens the fibers or small particles build-up at the site of the puncture and intertwine to form a flexible plug. Then a chemical reaction happens that “cures” the rubber and fills the puncture. At least that's what is supposed to happen. When the puncture is too big, the sealant is old, or there is not enough un-cured sealant in the tire… then not so much. OK, so that was more than a word. But hopefully you learned something. The 10-day event will be held in the charming town in North Queensland in 2024, with thousands of athletes from around the world expected to take part. The World Triathlon Multisport Championships will see duathlon, long distance triathlon, long distance aquabike, aquathlon, cross triathlon and cross duathlon world championship races organized together during a week-long festival. This ground-breaking event now allows for athletes to compete in various multisport races, as opposed to electing only one each season. And participants can even vie for the Multisport Legend, a title reserved for those who compete in four events. World Triathlon President and IOC member Marisol Casado said that the organisation was looking forward to heading to Townsville in 2024. “We are absolutely delighted to return to Queensland after such a long time without events in Australia, this time for one of our flagship events: the Multisport World Championships in Townsville,” she said. “Over the last years, Australia has become synonymous of triathlon on its multiple variations, and has proved to be a magnificent host for the triathlon family, playing host to some truly memorable performances and great champions, staging races the results of which have helped shape the path of entire seasons. “Being able to hold these important races in one fantastic location and all under the banner of one festival has proved to be hugely beneficial for athletes, spectators and media alike, allowing the global World Triathlon family the opportunity to gather together for a true celebration of the sport, and we are extremely excited to head to Townsville in 2024,” she said. Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said the Multisport World Championships cemented Townsville's place as the sporting events capital of northern Australia. “I'm looking forward to seeing the Multisport World Championships come to life here in the North, bringing together thousands of elite and age-group athletes,” Mr Stewart said. “The Palaszczuk Government is proud to support the Multisport World Championships because we understand the importance of events to local jobs and Townsville's visitor economy. “This event is great news for North Queensland tourism operators, accommodation and transport providers, and local retailers,” he said. “It's also a golden opportunity for competitors and spectators to build extra time into their stay to explore Townsville's amazing tourism and Indigenous cultural experiences, world-class dining, the reef, and breathtaking tropical islands and rainforests.” Mayor Jenny Hill said the Townsville City Council and the wider community was looking forward to welcoming the Multisport World Championships to the city. “Hosting this event is a real coup of Townsville and further reinforces our city's reputation as the events capital of Northern Australia,” Cr Hill said. “With our beautiful natural environment and ideal weather, I can think of no better place for the world's best athletes to test their skills and endurance. “The championships will also provide a platform to promote our city and region to the world, which will boost our tourism industry for years to come.” Miles Stewart OAM OLY, Triathlon Australia CEO, welcomed news that the event would be held in Townsville in 2024. “This is fantastic news for triathlon and multisport in Australia, and for our members who have been anticipating, and looking forward to racing and officiating at these world championships on home soil,” said Stewart. “We're expecting our largest Australian representative team on record for Townsville 2024 with seven championships on the schedule from cross-triathlon, aquathlon to long course. “The festival format will mean athletes can race across multiple disciplines on multiple days, which is really exciting, and will be a great boost for Australian events with athletes racing to qualify for a spot on the team from 2023,” he said. “Australia has some of the best triathlon events in the world, and we can't wait to welcome the world's best to Townsville, and continue to build on our legacy of hosting world-class events. Official dates for the Townsville Multisport World Championships will be announced in the near future. The World Triathlon Multisport Championships made its debut in the World Triathlon calendar in 2017 in Penticton (Canada), a successful event that was followed by Fyn (Denmark) in 2018 and Pontevedra (Spain) in 2019. After the event being cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, in 2021 the races were held in multiple locations (Almere, El Anillo and Aviles). In 2022 the event will travel to Romania and Slovakia, and will return to the original format of all races in one location during a 10-day festival in Ibiza (Spain) in 2023 and Townsville (Australia) in 2024. https://www.townsvillenorthqueensland.com.au/events/product-events/?world-triathlon-multisport--championship-59e59f8fc18adcc63caa2e39#:~:text=01%20Jan%202024%20%2D%2005%20Oct,age%20group%20and%20para%2Dtriathletes. Ironman, PTO, Clash, Challenge and the World Triathlon Series all offer a pro race schedule and prize purses to attract the best pro athletes and find new ways to attract viewers. With all of the races these brands putting out their own race series, there are numerous regional and world championships with even greater prize money. How pro athletes plan their race schedule is harder with all of the races. Just how bad is it? I researched the pro race schedules for each of these brands, put them in a spreadsheet and we are going to talk about just how congested the race schedule is and just how hard it must be to plan a pro race schedule. BE CURIOUS Be curious about how your cycling gear was made and ask where it comes from. “If consumers want to check what a brand is doing, a good place to start is checking if they have signed up to the Shift Cycling Culture climate change commitment,” says Bronsvoort. “It means that they have at least started to think about its sustainability and begun the journey.” This image shows a close up of a rear wheel with a person crouching down finishing cleaning the bike Regularly cleaning your bike can preserve it's life LOOK AFTER YOUR CYCLING STUFF “I can't stress the importance of bike cleaning,” says Steve Fearn, Muc-Off global cycling PR and comms manager. “It sounds basic, but if you maintain your bike and equipment, it will keep your bike going for much longer and save in raw materials in having to replace it.” It goes without saying to ensure that your bike cleaner is PTFE free and fully biodegradable. REPAIR WHAT YOU HAVE Some brands have an in-house repair service that will fix a product, often for free. Alpkit repair centre will tackle any brand of clothing (and some outdoor gear) to help prevent it ending up in landfill. DONATE WHAT YOU NO LONGER WANT OR NEED “The perverse thing is that we do need people to buy things new, in order that we can continue getting donations,” says Adam Thomson, manager of The Charity Bike Shop, based in Manchester, who refurbish, reuse and resell cycling related gear. There are similar bike-upcycling, often known as ‘bike kitchens', projects all over the country. “You'd be surprised how much people would have thrown away,” says Thomson. “They come in here with a box of old gear that they were about to chuck, and we've been able to use all of it.” Muc-Off is already part of Shift Cycling Culture, and is mapping its sustainability journey in a quest to reduce its environmental impact. “We've got our own Project Green initiative, where we're on target to save over 200 tonnes of plastic compared to 2019. We aim to improve Muc-Off's sustainability incrementally, one product at a time,” says Steve Fearn. “We offer eco-refills in some stores, so you can reuse your bottles to eliminate even more waste.” AIM FOR HIGH STANDARDS Aim for high standards and standardised designs. “Consumers need to push brands to use high quality standard parts to ensure they last longer,” says Bronsvoort. “The more intricate bike design becomes, the less reusable they are". A digital cycling counter is next to a bike path with a cyclist in a yellow jacket riding a bike Add to the tally of those making a difference RECYCLE OLD TIRES AND INNER TUBES There are 450 Velorim recycling centres located nationally which accept old tires and tubes for a small disposal levy, between 55p per tyre and 25p per tube. It's then processed or recycled to produce a range of products from flooring to adhesive. INVEST IN A GUPPY FRIEND BAG Every time we wash Lycra or polyester, microplastics are released into the water system. Putting dirty kit in a Guppy Friend bag when washing ensures all the tiny fibres are captured, and can then be disposed of responsibly in a closed container. The independently tested and verified bags are sustainably and fairly made in Europe. START THE CONVERSATION "Take to socials and message the shops and brands you use about their sustainability,” says Bronsvoort. “Get them to sign up to the Shift Cycling Culture climate commitment to start becoming more sustainable.” All revenue from the stores goes back to the charity Cyclists Fighting Cancer, which gives new lightweight bikes, tandems and adapted bikes to children and their families who have lived, or are living with cancer. “We should probably capture more information on how much we save from going to landfill, but we turn around 15 to 20 bikes a week in terms of refurbishment and where they are sold for a profit, which goes directly to the Cyclists for Cancer charity,” says Adam Thomson. RETHINK YOUR OVERSEAS TRAINING CAMP It's an uncomfortable truth, but flying with your bike will undo all of the above changes. According to carbon calculator, Myclimate, a return flight to cycling hotspot Mallorca from London is in the region of 500CO2e. While you can offset your emission in supporting a carbon offset project for around £13, truth be told most of us don't need a training camp abroad at all. Instead, check out our guide on cycling holidays in the UK for ideas on the best road and gravel routes to try in Britain. FALSE CLAIMS Sustainability claims can read like a fruit salad of initiatives and aims that are hard to unpick. Legislation is still a slow churn. The good news is that in the UK the Competition and Markets Authorities' (CMA) new Green Claims Code means retailers must make sure that their eco claims aren't vague and that they are backed up with information/evidence that is easy for the consumer to access and understand. If a consumer believes a retailer is using misleading claims, they can report it to the CMA at misleadinggreenclaims@cma.gov.uk. Consumers can also reach out to the Advertising Standards Agency if they have concerns about misinformation and harmful ‘green' statements in advertising. The 5 Best Yoga Poses for Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, According to Physical Therapists Because a healthy pelvic floor is, well, essential. JANUARY 24, 2023 GABRIELLE KASSEL Get full access to Outside Learn, our online education hub featuring in-depth yoga, fitness, & nutrition courses, when you sign up for Outside+. Your pelvic floor muscles are to your body what a structural frame is to your house: foundational. Spanning from hip-to-hip and back-to-front, the pelvic floor muscles are a flexible sling of muscles that support your reproductive and excretory organs, says Kandis Daroski, a physical therapist. This includes your bladder, bowels, rectum, and uterus (if you have one). Healthy pelvic floor muscles also support sexual arousal and orgasms, says Daroski. And as part of your core, these muscles help protect your spine and support overall balance, she says. Just like the other muscles in your body, your pelvic floor can weaken as a result of misuse or overuse, says Corey Silbert, a pelvic floor therapist. Also, pregnancy, menopause, obesity, chronic constipation, even improper form while lifting can injure these muscles. As a result, your pelvic floor may be unable to relax, contract, or move with coordination. Why Is Your Pelvic Floor Important? Pelvic floor dysfunction is typically marked by symptoms such as penetration pain; pelvic, abdominal or rectal pain; persistent constipation; erectile dysfunction; and bladder or bowel leakage, says Daroski. All of which can negatively impact your quality of life. However, dedicating just a few minutes a day to these critical muscles can support their overall health. Pelvic floor dysfunction can be treated through a combination of physical therapy, biofeedback, medication—and yoga. That's right, yoga. “Yoga can greatly benefit any individual with pelvic floor dysfunction,” Daroski says. It gives individuals the opportunity to intentionally contract or relax their pelvic floor, as well as coordinate pelvic floor movements to their breath, she says. The same stress-relief that a yoga practice brings to your thoughts can also help release pelvic floor tension. Stress is a known factor in the development of tension in muscle groups, including your pelvic floor, says Julia Connolly, an orthopedic and pelvic health physical therapist. When your pelvic floor muscles become tense, it can create pain and even exacerbate pelvic floor dysfunction and the symptoms associated with it, she says. Can You Prevent Pelvic Floor Dysfunction? Not exactly. The pelvic floor is a complicated muscle structure that is impacted by your physical actions as well as your emotions and thoughts. While the addition of a regular yoga practice may be beneficial for your pelvic floor, it alone cannot prevent pelvic floor dysfunction. Yoga can be a helpful component of your pelvic floor dysfunction treatment plan. However, if you're experiencing any of the symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, your first step should be to head to a pelvic floor therapist, Connolly says. Most pelvic floor health treatment plans require a handful of habit changes, she says, which an expert can walk you through. “Treatment is individualized and will depend on your exact pelvic floor dysfunction,” Connolly says. And it often includes yoga. The 5 Best Yoga Poses for Your Pelvic Floor Muscles Whether you turn to a more active or restorative yoga practice will depend on your condition, Connolly says. The following five poses are commonly recommended by Daroski and Connolly for preventing and treating pelvic floor dysfunction. Balasana (Child's Pose) A resting position, Child's Pose can be beneficial if you have overactive or non-relaxing pelvic floor muscles, says Daroski. If you aren't experiencing knee pain, try experimenting with a wide-legged Child's Pose to give a gentle stretch to your pelvic floor. You can place a folded blanket or towel under your knees for extra cushioning. Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose) Reclining Bound Angle Pose can help stretch the muscles and fascia in the perineum region, the area between the genitals and the anus, Connolly says. The pose also helps soothe the vagus nerve, which is responsible for the fight, flight, or freeze response, she says. Calming your autonomic nervous system can help reduce involuntary pelvic muscle contractions that can occur in response to a perceived threat, she says, which can be anything from an email ping from a boss to a bear in the woods. Ananda Balasana (Happy Baby Pose) This pose stretches the inner thigh muscles connected with the pelvic floor, Daroski says. When paired with controlled belly breathing, this position can teach you how to relax those muscles. You can also practice a variation of this posture, Half Happy Baby Pose, by raising one leg at a time. Marjaryasana (Cat Pose) and Bitilasana (Cow Pose) You may be familiar with the relief this stretch offers your spine, but it can also benefit your pelvic floor. These two poses improve symptoms associated with urinary leakage, urgency, and frequency, as well as pelvic pain, Daroski says. Supta Matsyendrasana (Reclining Twist) “Reclining Twist is a gentle way to invite length and stretch to the connective tissue that surrounds your lumbar spine, sacrum, and abdominal wall,” Connolly says. When these tissues get stiff, it can contribute to pelvic tightness, she says. However, when they loosen, you can regain mobility in your pelvic floor. What's New in the 303: A pioneer of gravel events, the Old Man Winter Rally prepares for a sellout event amid wintry weather. January 31, 2023 Now in its 9th year, this ‘Epic Winter Adventure' has become the annual kickoff event for adventurous runners and riders from all over the country. /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Now in its 9th year, this ‘Epic Winter Adventure' has become the annual kickoff event for adventurous runners and riders from all over the country. Need to know: 1,500 riders and runners from 27 states will take the start line in Lyons, Colorado on Sunday 2/5/23. Elite riders and runners will compete for the $8,000 prize purse, including Jens Voight, Ruth Winder, and Alex House. The Old Man Winter Rally has seen all kinds of weather from a blizzard to a record-high sunny day. The forecast for 2023 is mild with 40-degree temps with sun This year, the event will move to a new venue, Bohn Park, a multi-million-dollar project completed in the wake of the historic 2013 floods. 5 categories: 50K Bike, 100K Bike, 10K Run, 5K Run, 10K Run / 50K Bike combo Originally created as a way for friends to ‘rally' together and support each other getting outside to ride on a wintry day, the Old Man Winter Rally has become one of the most popular running and riding events in Colorado. The event was built for folks that don't hang up their bikes or running shoes during the winter and instead embrace the cold by bundling up and hitting the gravel roads and trails. “Old Man Winter is all about gearing up for winter adventure, having fun with your buddies, and enjoying a great party at the finish line” says, Josh Kravetz, the event's founder and President of Adventure Fit, a Boulder-based Active Entertainment event company. “We like to make sure everybody has a fun day at Old Man Winter Rally – no matter what your athletic ability. This is Boulder, so you'll see plenty of world-class athletes at the event, but we also love for this to be the first race ever for riders and runners.” This Sunday, February 5th the event offers two bike course options: 50km and 100km, two run course options: a 5K and a 10K running race, and a Run/Bike combo that's popular for winter multisport athletes. There will also be a huge celebration in Bohn Park for all at the after-party. And they do mean “party”. Athletes will cross the finish line and find fire pits, live music, delicious food (including s'mores) and Bootstrap Brewing Beer and June Shine cocktails. 2023 will have the biggest participation yet. The event will be capped at 1500 participants and less than 100 spots currently remain. Old Man Winter History: 2015 – In the debut year, gravel bikes weren't in fashion quite yet and future Tour de France stage winner Sepp Kuss nearly won on a road bike. Temps hit the high-60's and high winds made for a breezy finish. 2016 – The running event is added, drawing in 188 participants in year one. 2018 – The course was revised due to construction, offering the first and only Northbound version which did not include the Rowena trail. Mat Stephens (winner of Unbound Gravel) and Lauren de Crescenzo (the winningest girl in gravel) taking the win. 2019 – The coldest year, never reaching above freezing throughout the whole event 2020 – A massive winter storm rolled through and ultimately, forced the cancellation of the 100K bike event 10 miles in. Riders were slipping and sliding in the epic conditions and despite the cancellation, the wild nature of it made it a monumental story in the race's history. 2021 – One of the first COVID-friendly “DIY” style events to pick up steam, riders had the chance to ride the course with their pod, and get scored on a virtual scoreboard, or select a virtual option altogether. World Tour talents Alex Howes & Lachlan Morton teamed up and won the event. 2022 – The Rally returned from the pandemic full steam ahead, drawing in pro riders, everyday athletes and riders and runners from every background. Participants enjoyed a sunny 45-degree day 2023 – The Rally moves to a new venue, Bohn Park, a multi-million-dollar project completed in the wake the historic 2013 floods. For those not competing, the top of the Rowena trail (off CO Rd 83) and Old Stage will be great spectating locations – showing off the variety of terrain the riders will challenge. Early February in Colorado can bring spring conditions, or mid-winter snow. A cool January and “sticky snow” will likely see a wintery route on tap. The after party in Lyons is open to all, with bonfires, s'mores, cold beer, and warm food. Join in on the winter adventure!
