Irish Mammy-itis is so deeply ingrained in our psyches but micromanaging every aspect of our kids' lives isn't doing them – or us – any favours in the long-run. In this episode, we're joined by Gavin Bourke and Stephen Flood from Life Skills Academy to find out more about the essential life skills every child should have before they reach the age of 10. Like most children with an Irish mammy, I heard the phrase “self-praise is no praise” enough times to know that one simply shouldn't do it because it makes the person sound conceited and, well… stupid. As we grow we learn that praise is earned not given, to use another Irish Mammy saying. Which brings me nicely along to Norma Foley and Josepha Madigan's ridiculous description of the education budget which they are calling “innovative and progressive.” Welcome to my reaction to Budget 2023.

Three Things That Matter with Ann Blake | Guest: Annette Flynn In episode 5 of the second series, Ann speaks to actress Annette Flynn who is performing in Bottom Dog Theatre's upcoming production, Gravity (A Love Story). Annette's three things bring the listener on a journey from the beaches of Sligo to the challenges of answering tourist questions and the Irish Mammy's love of letting you know what neighbour died - whether you knew them or not. Annette, from Ballina in Co. Mayo, is probably best known to Irish audiences for her role as fun-loving teacher Maeve in Fair City and more recently as the mother in the Littlewoods Christmas ad. She notched a few more soaps on her belt, notably Eastenders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks, following a move across the pond to London. In 2020 Annette was named as one of 'Mayo's 18 most inspirational and trailblazing women at home and abroad' by RSVP alongside the likes of Sally Rooney, Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain and fellow Ballina women Dr. Norah Patten (Ireland's first astronaut) and Mary Robinson. Three Things That Matter is hosted by local playwright, performer and musician, Ann Blake. In each episode a different guest will be interviewed and asked to ‘bring' three things that matter to them. These may vary from books and plants to places and occasions. The three things provide a jumping off point for discussion of the extraordinary in the every day. On this week's episode I was blessed to be in the (virtual) presence of the hilarious Pamela Joyce from one of Ireland's national radio stations, Today Fm. Pamela is the original Irish Mammy skit woman and it was those videos that, and not without a lot of behind the scenes graft, propelled her to where she is today with her very own evening show on Today FM. We chat about how her blogger skit videos led her to be blocked by a few of them, how she managed to cheer up the nation through Covid and her own struggles with her mental health. Pamela is such a down to earth gal and another great conversation that proves that if you don't really know what career you want to do you will eventually find your way to something that makes you happy. She is also a lyrical genius and should be writing raps for Cardi B any time soon. If you know you know! You can listen to Pamela live on Today FM from Sunday to Thursday between 7 and 10pm. Or if you are here in Sydney, like myself, you can tune in via the Today FM app live on Monday to Friday from 4am to 7am or listen back whenever you want thanks to the app. I hope you enjoy the episode x Instagram: @aislinndowling Facebook: @dowlingaislinn Twitter: @dowlingaislinn Website: aislinn-dowling.com

How many times have you said 'If you don't get off that iPad/Playstation/Laptop/Phone...I'm going to have to take it away'? Parents around the world have faced having to confiscate their children's toys since time began, but what happens when you forget where the contraband has been safely put away. That is what happened to Galway Mammy Louise who got in touch with Dermot and Dave. After a battle, she took her 10-year old Darragh's iPad away and hid it in a 'safe space', but sadly she's unable to remember where exactly this safe space is. She's checked every cupboard and press in the house, worried that it was in the recycling and even checked her knicker drawer but there's still no sign. And it turns out, she's not the only one! Parents around the country got in touch with their stories of confiscations gone awry. [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2020/09/22125601/Ipadloss_2209.mp3"][/audio]

How do you get your family more active and feeling better without causing chaos and rows? Every family wants to get out and about, go for picnics and eat better but typically find that there's one (or two or three) people who have a different plan. During lockdown, Rachel Mescall came up with a clever idea to stop the rows once and for all and get the family involved in creating memories. After studying the WHO guidelines on workplace wellness in college, Rachel decided to come up with a family wellness plan and trial it on her own family. With just a few simple steps, they've come up with some brilliant ideas from picnics to cycling. Speaking to Dermot and Dave, Rachel explained how it works and why it's less about competing with the lycra-clad family down the road and more about finding what works for your family. To find out more, check Rachel's Instagram. [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2020/08/27122416/Rachel-Mescall-podcast.mp3"][/audio]

What's in a name? For most of the world's population, Irish names are the only contact they have with Gaeilge, and this is where its reputation for beauty and difficulty is perpetuated. Prospective parents have a great responsibility in naming a child… as to writers of characters in a novel. In this week's episode, Éimear, Darach and Clodagh are joined by Colm O'Regan, the talent behind the Irish Mammies books and columnist with The Examiner. As a Dad and a novelist, he tells the gang about naming children and characters, the rise and fall of certain names, the storm dividend and the subtle difference between doves and pigeons. About to head to my 8 year old's first confession. This week we review - The Walshes Episode 1The Walshes are a warm, tight-knit family from the West Dublin suburb of Strollinstown. But sometimes tight-knit is too much, and they're tripping over each other as the kids out-grow the family home.Tony, head of the household, tells the sort of Dad jokes that most people would cross continents to avoid; his wife Carmel is the typical Irish Mammy, and they're parents to Ciara and Rory, both still living at home because the state of the Irish economy has forced them all back together.Even Ciara's new boyfriend Graham is forced to move in and family friend Martin always seems to be hanging around mending bits and pieces - as well as accidentally becoming trapped in the wall cavity. The script was developed by comedy group Diet Of Worms in collaboration with Graham Linehan. Period dramas don't always feature big dresses and country mansions - in the case of BROADCAST NEWS ‘period’ means VHS tapes, chunky telephone receivers and something called the "nightly news." In the third installment of our 1987 Best Actress series, we look at Holly Hunter's first big leading role in James L. Brooks' weird and wordy romantic dramedy. The trifecta of almost likable characters are: Holly's scrappy news producer Jane; Albert Brooks' petulant, nebbishy reporter Aaron; and William Hurt (beloved of Irish Mammies everywhere) as the hunky but lunky Lead Anchor, Tom. Crushes are formed, journalistic ethics are violated and everyone, at some point, is kind of a jerk. BROADCAST NEWS is an 80s time capsule of bad suits and weird hair (especially on Joan Cusack) depicting a media landscape that teeters on the edge of obsolescence, with a terrible beauty about to be born. We read the news today, oh boy!
We’re 58 episodes deep into MorningBrew and this week Stephen wants people to back off the electric picnic tent bandwagon, Dan wants to uncover the worst patriotism and Adam wants to know if texting is the most important form of communication in the world today. We also delve deep into Irish Mammy’s boy syndrome and why we could never date someone that shared the name of a sibling.
