Epic thriller All the Colours of Dark was one of the must-read books of 2024 - but author Chris Whitaker's road to success was a long one. Whitaker has suffered his share of trauma - childhood abuse, stabbing, and losing millions of pounds as a stockbroker. He turned to writing - a move he credits with saving his life. Ahead of his upcoming appearance at Auckland Writers Festival, Whitaker says it was a 'vulnerable' place putting his creative work out for audience approval. "It felt like I didn't have anything else to offer - that was then, obviously, but now I've started writing a new book and I'm in love with that." The Buddies dive into All the Colors of the Dark  by Chris Whittaker. A story that manages to combine elements of Joe Dirt, Shawshank Redemption, Where the Crawdad Sing, and Forrest Gump into one surprisingly coherent narrative. Or more simply put, a tale about a pirate turning into a great painter. The book had the Buddies debating proper broccoli-roasting techniques, questioning why Ivy League acceptances are treated like community college admissions in small-town Missouri, and wondering if maybe eyepatch technology is due for an upgrade after several centuries. So, grab your sketchbook (preferably filled with portraits of missing persons), double-check that your doors are locked, and join the Buddies as they navigate through this heart-wrenching story. Intro/Book Report (0:00-4:08)Stock Up/Down (2:49-39:33)Favorite Scene/Character/Listener Email (39:34-45:16)Love/Hate (45:17-54:31)Lingering Questions/Casting the Movie/Show (54:32-59:25)Conclusion (59:26-1:02:07) NEXT BOOK: Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

The Buddies enter Britain and the world of King Arthur in The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell. If you're sophisticated, you'll know this as an "Arthurian tale" or a retelling of the classic animated TV show King Arthur and the Knights of Justice. The book had the Buddies debating the merits of LSD-powered sorcery, comparing bar game courage to battlefield bravery, and wondering if maybe everyone in the Dark Ages just had terrible eyesight. So, grab your sword (named or unnamed), pour yourself some liquid courage, and join the Buddies as they battle through Book 1 of the Warlord Chronicles. Intro/Book Report (0:00-2:48)Stock Up/Down (2:49-32:14)Favorite Scene/Character (32:15-42:50)Love/Hate (42:51-52:12)Listener Email (52:13-55:01)Casting the Movie/Show (55:02-56:22)Conclusion (56:23-57:53) NEXT BOOK: All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker

After spending 15 years as a lobbyist on Capitol Hill, Bill Power joined forces with Greg Praske in 1991 to co-found Association Resource Group, or ARG. Initially focused on selling affinity programs to national trade associations in Washington D.C., ARG expanded into telecommunications, where Bill learned the ropes the hard way, paving the way for the creation of the Agent Alliance. What began as a casual 'caring and sharing' group quickly evolved into The Alliance Partners, a powerful collective-buying consortium. Since 2007, Bill has served as the full-time CEO of The Alliance, guiding its growth and influence.  In addition, he is a facilitator of several industry peer groups and involved in the formation of TCSP Technology Channel Sales Professionals, a nonprofit trade association for selling agents. .When he's not leading the charge in the telecom industry, Bill enjoys the simple life, tending to his 'gentleman's farm' in South Carolina. The Wireless Way Ep. with Bill Power: A Career of Uniting and Innovating in TelecomIn this episode of 'The Wireless Way,' host Chris Whitaker welcomes industry veteran Bill Power. Simon Mayo's Books Of The Year

Novelist Chris Whitaker joins Simon and Matt for a chat about his new book, All The Colours Of The Dark. Chris worked in the City for many years as a trader, before quitting to write. He talks openly about a traumatic incident which turned him on to writing, as well as how long it takes him to write each novel. (if you're thinking about writing, don't let this put you off!) We also learn about how he creates his characters, and the importance of dialogue to his writing and plotting. More about the book below: Late one summer, the town of Monta Clare is shattered by the abduction of teenager Joseph 'Patch' Macauley. Nobody more so than Saint Brown, who will risk everything to find her best friend. But when she does: it will break her heart. Patch lies alone in a pitch-black room - until he feels a hand in his. Her name is Grace and, though they cannot see each other, she lights their world with her words. But when he escapes: there is no sign she ever even existed. Left with only her voice and her name, he paints her from broken memories - and charts an epic search to find her. As years turn to decades, and hope becomes obsession, Saint will shadow his journey - on a darker path to hunt down the man who took them - and set free the only boy she ever loved. Even if finding the truth means losing each other forever... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
