St. Louis' intimate one-ring circus, Circus Flora, is back at the Big Top in Grand Center. Artistic and executive director Jack Marsh and Cecil MacKinnon, the show's narrator, discuss “Marooned!” The original production takes place on a magical island where two pirates encounter amazing, weird and wacky people — and animals — as they search for treasure.
To kick off its 37th year, Circus Floor had the red and black brass band lead a parade of circus performers through the streets of Grand Center to the big top. That would be the fully air-conditioned, post-pandemic Big Top. Of course, the flying trapeze artists will dazzle as always. Please, hold your applause until then. This year, there are camels, dogs, and a pig performing, along with the St. Louis Arches and the teen acrobats. There's a husband-wife team shooting arrows at each other. Here's Circus Floor Executive Director, Jack Marsh.
St. Louis' intimate one-ring circus, Circus Flora, is back at the Big Top in Grand Center. Artistic and executive director (and lifelong circus performer) Jack Marsh says acts such as aerialist Laura Lippert, the Globe of Speed, and world class juggler Roberto Carlos will thrill audiences in the circus' 37th season that runs until June 25.

The eloquent and encyclopaedic Gideon Haigh joins Diana and Donald to chat all things cricket. We learn about when and why cricket started in Australia, its greasy foothold in America and its unabating grip within the Indian sub continent.Gideon reads a passage from his profile on Shane Warne featured in The Monthly in September 2005 ('Beach Boy'), which preceded a legendary Test match that summer and Gideon's book, On Warne. We cover a lot of ground (sorry) in this special Christmas edition of Greenland, in which we zero in on one of the great Australian pastimes - playing or watching cricket. The Boxing Day Test is one of the fixtures on our national sporting calendar, played on the hallowed turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).Links to some stuff we refer to/further reading:The enduring legacy of Phillip Hughes, article in The Australian by Gideon Haigh, 27 November 2019. This is a stunning reflection on a post-Hughes cricket world.Gideon Haigh's most recent book, This is How I Will Strangle You is out now. It examines the tortuous experience of Natasa Christidou who was sexually abused by her father. If (like Diana) you can't get enough of Gideon's writing, here's a link to all of his published work and website so you can devour it there. A word about our cover art Australia is currently experiencing raging bushfires across New South Wales and Queensland. Our fire brigades and volunteers have been absolutely stretched to the hilt and our whole community is trying to support them. A small way we're helping out at Greenland is to use this epic photo taken by John Donegan as our promo artwork for this episode on social channels. All proceeds of the sale of the photo are being donated to the NSW Rural Fire Service. It's a beautiful photo that captures the spirit of our firefighters and the role of cricket in Australian life - in good and tough times. If you'd to purchase the photo (and support the NSW Rural Fire Service) you can do so here for A$55.

For more than 30 years, Circus Flora, a one-ring circus that makes St. Louis its home, has offered a circus show that’s best described as live theater. It’s an intimate setting that is in stark contrast to the images some people might conjure of the large Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus which performed for the last time 10 months ago. Two things are significantly different about this year’s Circus Flora season, as Cecil MacKinnon and Jack Marsh noted this week on St. Louis on the Air.
Jack Marsh has been going to DIY shows and starting punk bands for the last few years, and he's been a good friend of mine for even longer. We met during our middle school years and I often depended on Jack for a ride to hardcore gigs in Kansas City by the time we got to high school. We talk about his first favorite records, his father's days as an Elvis impersonator, how the sound Kansas City punk has splintered, and the many bands -- including Killakee Kat, The Drippies, and Nitecrawlers -- that he's been playing in the last couple years.
