Michael O'Leary and Dermot Desmond have criticised the plans to finally build an underground metro system. Dublin Chamber said that in a poll of their members 40% wanted Metrolink to be prioritised. But at a cost of at least €12bn it will be the most expensive metro in the world. Will it be worth it? All to discuss with Mary Rose Burke from Dublin Chamber.
The billionaire Dermot Desmond said that the Metrolink in Dublin would be obsolete by the time it opens due to the arrival of autonomous vehicles and advanced AI. While that ignores the fact that it would clog up the roads even further, it did shine a light on whether technology is moving so fast that we won't be driving our own cars in the near future. All to discuss with Stephen Prendiville an Infrastructure Partner with Deloitte.
Pat Leahy and Harry McGee join Hugh Linehan to look back on the week in politics: · Fox News and its standard of journalism were highlighted during an episode of The Will Cain Show this week that featured media commentator and author Douglas Murray talking about open borders migration. During the segment Murray claimed Dublin had gone from being one of the safest cities in Europe to one of its most dangerous. His basis for this was a survey conducted by the Online Betting Guide (OLBG) entitled European Nightlife Index Casinos. In it, Dublin was ranked ninth in Europe with Birmingham, Naples and Paris placed among the most dangerous cities. · A group of 16 members of the House of Representatives have sought to exert pressure on Ireland's Government by writing to US treasury secretary Scott Bessent to request he consider adding Ireland to a list of countries boycotting Israel if the proposed Occupied Territories Bill is passed. · Billionaire businessman Dermot Desmond feels Artificial Intelligence will make Dublin's planned MetroLink obsolete and has urged the Government to shelve the €10 billion project. · And Independent ministers are not happy with the current rules around inheritance tax. Plus, the panel picks their favourite Irish Times pieces of the week:· Diarmaid Ferriter and Stephen Collins on the legacy of Daniel O'Connell, Cliff Taylor on how Ireland's economy still remains suspended between Boston and Berlin, and Sonia Harris Pope on Jewish identity in Ireland at the moment. The Mace Group have built the London Eye, the Shard and the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Closer to home it helped build Terminal 2 here in Ireland and is now working with Uisce Eireann to bring our water infrastructure up to the 21st century. It already has 100 people working on the Metrolink to Swords. But what's it like bidding for big projects here which face horrendous delays and challenges? All to discuss with Frank Randles is the Country Manager with the Mace Group.
Darragh O'Brien Minister for Transport, Climate, Energy and the Environment joined Pat Kenny to discuss the future of Irish transport and the government's climate plans as billions have been committed to both departments under the national development plan. From the supposed commencement of the Metrolink, the slow development of offshore wind resource, to will Irish buses ever see contactless card payments?
The Government's updated National Development Plan (NDP) proposes to spend a vast sum of money on capital infrastructure. But beyond three ‘mega projects' there is little detail and the vagueness of the document has led to some skepticism. In part one of today's podcast Pat Leahy joins Hugh Linehan to discuss the NDP and whether the Government's promise to prioritise infrastructure could survive a major economic shock - the kind created by heavy US tariffs, for example, They then look at the Summer Economic Statement, also revealed this week, which shows there will not be much wriggle room in this year's Budget. In part two, back to the NDP and what it says about the Government's plan for the development of transportation infrastructure. Dublin's proposed MetroLink is one of the three mega projects identified, but there is €20 billion earmarked for other unidentified projects. Where should it go? How much will be spent on new roads, and what are the implications for carbon emissions? And what about public transport projects outside Dublin? Professor Brian Caulfield talks to Hugh and Pat. Brian Caulfield is a Professor in Transportation in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at Trinity College Dublin. Hosted on Acast. The Government is being urged to ramp up investment in the road network of rural parts of Clare. It comes as details have been revealed of the State's plans to invest €112 billion in infrastructure over the next five years. As part of the revised National Development Plan, housing is to receive an investment of €36 billion while transport will be supported to the tune of €24 billion - €2 billion of which will go towards Dublin's Metrolink. O'Callaghan's Mills native and Secretary of the Clare branch of the Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association, Martin McMahon, claims the powers that be have a job of work to do to prove the west of Ireland isn't being forgotten about.
Nobody will use the planned MetroLink from Dublin city centre to the airport and it will cost taxpayers multiples of any budget allocated to the project - that's according to Michael O'Leary, group chief executive officer of Ryanair Holdings.

Last week, NATO held its annual summit in the Hague, Netherlands. Where U.S. President Donald Trump persuaded most NATO countries to commit to a target of 5% of GDP to increase the budget for defence. We are not a member of NATO but with talks about giving up our neutrality policy, we might be left with no choice but to join and pay the €20 billion annual membership fee. For context, this could pay to build a new Metrolink in 2026 and every year thereafter. All to discuss with Economist, Colm McCarthy.

RUNDOWN With Geno Smith gone and no clear successor in place, Seahawks fans are left debating whether this was a necessary step forward or an avoidable mistake. The front office now holds the keys to a franchise-defining offseason, with a mountain of cap space and draft picks but no proven quarterback. Seahawks No-Table discuss the Seahawks trading Geno Smith to the Raiders and DK Metcalf to the Steelers, securing extra cap space and draft capital but creating major questions at quarterback and wide receiver. While John Schneider insists this is about building for the future, the weak free-agent market and uncertain rookie class make the path forward murky. Ray Roberts chats about a seismic Seahawks roster overhaul sparking heated debate about the team's direction. While salary cap savings and a potential rebuild make sense on paper, the uncertainty at quarterback—now with Sam Darnold in the mix—raises more questions than answers. With the offensive line still a glaring issue the next few months will determine whether this is a quick reset or a long, painful rebuild. Mariners No-Table talk Justin Turner's blunt comments about the Mariners' lack of spending echo long-standing fan frustrations, while Jerry DePoto's latest remarks do little to win back goodwill.
