What part should politics play in our everyday lives? In How to Think About Politics: A Guide in Five Parts (Oxford University Press, 2025) Peter Allen, a professor of Politics and Co-Director of the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Bath, explores this question across a range of practical and philosophical examples. The book directly challenges the conventional academic understanding of politics, showing how politics is much more than election polls or parliamentary behaviours. This broader view of the politic allows the book to offer insights as to what needs to change in political systems, as well as more generally in societies. A much needed and urgent intervention on the current state of our world, the book should be widely read by any readers interested in politics today. Learn more about your ad choices. Firebird Metals Ltd managing director Peter Allen spoke with Proactive's Tylah Tully about the company's latest milestone, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Eramet and how this advances Firebird's long-term manganese strategy. Eramet is a French multinational metals and mining company involved in nickel, lithium and manganese production. The MoU specifically relates to Eramet's manganese mining operations in Gabon, which have been in production for 50 years and are expected to continue for at least another 20 years. Manganese from Gabon would be supplied to Firebird's proposed manganese processing operations in China. “Our annual demand is very small in comparison, so it makes them a strong and stable partner for us,” Allen said. The goal of the MoU is to accelerate Firebird's sulphide plant development, enabling early production and securing a reliable supply of manganese feedstock. The agreement is expected to transition into a formal offtake agreement once Firebird moves past its final investment decision (FID) and enters the construction phase. Looking ahead, Firebird has a busy 2025 planned, with a focus on advancing its sulphide plant project, progressing the Oakover manganese project and expanding its technical division, including innovations like calcining kiln technology, which has applications in multiple commodities. #FirebirdMetals #ASXFRB #Eramet #Manganese #Mining #BatteryMetals #SulphidePlant #CriticalMinerals #Investing #StockMarket #ProactiveInvestors

Allen highlighted China's unique industrial parks, advanced technology and cost efficiencies as key drivers for Firebird Metals' strategic growth in the country. “China's industrial parks offer a low-capital, low-operating-cost environment, with access to reagents, off-takers and complete waste-free processes,” Allen explained. He emphasised the proximity to global battery production hubs, noting that one-third of the world's battery gigafactories are in or near the Hunan province where Firebird operates. Allen also discussed the company's growth strategy: “Our focus is to demonstrate our capabilities in China and eventually expand to meet growing Western demand.” Firebird Metals has received robust support from local governments, tax incentives and partnerships, which underpin its competitive position in the lithium battery supply chain. #ProactiveInvestors #FirebirdMetals #ASX #OTC #LMFP #LithiumBattery #BatteryMaterials #ChinaBusiness #SustainableProduction #BatteryTechnology #EVMarket #ProactiveStudio

Firebird Metals Ltd (ASX:FRB, OTC:FRBMF) managing director Peter Allen sits down with Proactive's Jonathan Jackson after the company formalised a strategic partnership with Central South University (CSU) in Hunan, China, aimed at developing a processing method for lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) as a cathode active material (CAM). This collaboration supports Firebird's objective to become a significant producer of battery-grade manganese sulphate in China, a key component for LMFP batteries used in electric vehicles. The agreement focuses on developing Firebird's proposed manganese sulphate facility in Jinshi, Hunan, into a streamlined LMFP producer by bypassing the traditional crystallisation step, lowering production costs and enhancing quality. CSU, recognised for its expertise in battery material processes, will work alongside Firebird's R&D team, conducting lab-scale tests and leading a scoping study to plan a pilot plant with a daily capacity of one tonne. Professors Xing Ou and Lei Ming, both prominent experts in LMFP development, will guide the project, building on existing progress in LMFP technology. Firebird will invest RMB850,000 (A$188,000) over 15 months, gaining ownership of all test results and patents. Initial results from the test work are expected next quarter, positioning Firebird to meet rising demand in the lithium-ion battery sector. #ProactiveInvestors #FirebirdMetals #ASX #LithiumBattery, #LMFP, #CathodeMaterials, #CentralSouthUniversity, #BatteryInnovation, #EVBatteries, #ASX, #ManganeseSulfate, #ElectricVehicles, #BatteryProduction, #ChinaManufacturing, #BatteryTech, #SustainableEnergy, #EnergyStorage, #BatteryMaterials, #RND, #PilotPlant, #ProfessorXingOu, #ProfessorLeiMing

Firebird Metals Ltd (ASX:FRB, OTC:FRBMF) managing director Peter Allen joins Proactive's Tylah Tully to discuss successful trials using a pilot-scale calcining rotary kiln at the Hunan Firebird Battery Technologies Plant, Hunan Province, China. The trials demonstrate significant energy savings, supporting Firebird's efforts in producing low-cost, high-purity manganese sulphate for lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) batteries. The self-developed electrical rotary kiln showed a 70% reduction in energy consumption, using 80-100 kWh per tonne compared to more than 300 kWh for conventional kilns. This leads to cost reductions of approximately US$30 per tonne, or 5% of total production costs. The testing was conducted in partnership with Sunward, a Chinese rotary tunnel kiln producer, who co-funded the energy-saving calcining unit. The kiln, installed at the Jinshi High-Tech Industrial Park, is scalable and is expected to deliver further savings as production expands. Firebird aims to improve its cost profile while progressing towards full-scale production with potential for the kiln to be used in other industries. The company has begun designing higher temperature kilns for applications such as lithium spodumene processing and has initiated international patenting of its kiln technology. #Proactiveinvestors #FirebirdMetals #ASX #ManganeseSulphate #BatteryTech #EnergyEfficiency #RotaryKiln #CostReduction #SustainableMining #ChinaManufacturing #LMFPBatteries #PilotKiln #Sunward #CalciningTechnology #IndustrialProduction #BatteryMaterials #HighPurityManganese #MiningInnovation #MineralProcessing #KilnTechnology #LithiumSpodumene #PatentPending

In this conversation, Peter Allen of Mastadon Valley Farm challenges everything you think you know about climate change, eating beef, and the potential for food abundance grown regeneratively on the land. He brings a unique perspective as both a seasoned academic ecologist and someone with practical experience creating a profitable regenerative farming business. In this episode, we cover:- How Peter made the jump from academia into full time regenerative farming- How management and stewardship of the land by indigenous people brought about the rich topsoil in the midwest - and how we're quickly destroying that- The environmental value of a savanna ecosystem, and how they're going about restoring it- The short term challenges - and long term advantages - of farming regeneratively- Why eating regenerative beef is actually good for you and the environment- How each of us can restore our land through our diet and purchasing choices- The potential for layered commercial enterprises on the land for greater profitability and efficiency- How the conversation around climate change disempowers people to make change, and why we should talk more about ecosystem restoration.- And much more...More about Peter:Peter is an ecologist-turned-farmer and applies his background researching and teaching ecology and complex systems science towards the design, restoration, and management of diverse and agriculturally productive ecosystems. He owns and operates Mastodon Valley Farm, a 220-acre regenerative farm in Southwestern Wisconsin where he has built a timber-frame homestead from the farm's trees, planted thousands of fruit and nut trees, and grazes cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry across their fertile valleys, steep hillsides, and restored native prairie pastures. Peter and his wife Maureen grow their family's food on their homestead where they are homeschooling their children nestled in a grove of oak trees. Peter combines his background with over a decade researching and teaching ecology and complexity science together with over a decade of experience farming regeneratively to provide unique and effective consulting and educational opportunities, helping people design, build, and manage diverse, ecologically functional, and economically profitable agroecosystems.Agrarian Futures is produced by Alexandre Miller, who also wrote our theme song.

There's a song performed by Peter Allen that seems to be more relevant than ever: Everything Old Is New Again. Film plots are recycled, songs are recycled (through covers or the same chord structures).....and the media we use to play those films and songs are back in fashion. Records have been popular again for a while, some people are rediscovering VHS, and as this month's film focus shows us, the Compact Cassette is the new medium of choice for music recording and listening. Welcome to Episode 114 of See Hear Podcast. In 2016, Zack Taylor released a film called “Cassette: A Documentary Mixtape” which looks at the humble invention which meant so much to those of us who grew up with the tape as a dominant medium for music listening (and recording music and audio letters and.....) The film features a new generation who were probably not born or at least cognisant of the tape singing its praises. Importantly, the director also sought out Lou Ottens and his colleagues who invented the compact cassette in the early 60s. While proud of their achievements, Ottens is somewhat puzzled that the cassette appeals so much to a new generation – he truly believes (as inventors do) that the cassette's time is done and the next thing should be focused on. False nostalgia? A genuine appeal to new eyes? The film gently explores all these things. The fans, the inventors, the musicians only releasing their music on cassette.....they're all here. Tim, Kerry and myself are joined by Mike White of The Projection Booth to talk as much about our own experiences and thoughts on tapes as well as the film. Give it a listen, then gather your friends together to reminisce (if you're of that age) about your own mixtapes, the times you became cassette surgeons, and how much you miss your old Walkmans. The film is available for you to watch on Tubi or on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmClZ7SMfBo Mike has a number of shows running under the banner of the Weirding Way Media network, but the flagship is The Projection Booth, essential listening for film fans of any type of cinema – tentpole, arthouse, Sci-fi, Czech, theme months, early cinema, obscure, mainstream.....all discussed with people passionate about films. The Imperialist by Sara Jeannette Duncan audiobook. “The Imperialist,” a novel by Sara Jeannette Duncan, published in 1904, is a portrait of life in small-town Ontario at the beginning of the 20th century. At that time, English Canada was torn between affectionate loyalty for the “mother country” (Britain), and, on the other side, hard-headed respect for the demands of life in the shadow of the dynamic American economy. (In a by-election, one party pushes for establishing a preferred trading relationship between Canada and Britain: this is the “imperialist” position referred to by the book's title.) Main characters find themselves in problematic love stories that unfold against the backdrop of a society that is working out its national identity. These national issues would continue to vex Canada for decades to come. The author is ambivalent about the larger debates, but offers richly specific, subtle, and entertaining observations of manners and morals. In the decades since publication, “The Imperialist” has been increasingly appreciated as a landmark in Canadian fiction. Critic and scholar Peter Allen has written: “Duncan is an eloquent and important witness to the ambiguity of [Canada's] developing national identity in the years before World War I.” NOTE: In this novel, a brief depiction of Native Canadians uses what we today recognize as offensive stereotypes. There is this wonderful song written by Peter Allen in the 1970 s.  Everything old is New Again. In a way that song sums up where marketers are these days. When that song was written fifty years ago, television advertising ruled. Businesses used the platform to build awareness by reaching a wide audience with little concern about demographics. It didn't matter who saw your message as long as you got in front of as many people as possible. The assumption was sooner or later someone would buy. Then along came digital media and especially social media marketing and suddenly marketers could target messages more precisely based on interests and demographics. Social media became a valuable tool to move prospects through the buyer's journey. Unfortunately with changes in social media algorithms and more restrictions to protect user privacy we seem to be back in time.  We are forced to put lots of broad messages out there in  the hopes of driving someone to our website and email list. Everything old is new again.  If you are looking to keep up with the changes and and find resources to stay in the game, check out  The Digital Toolbox

HARVEY FIERSTEIN wrote the books ( or adapted the books ) for the Broadway musicals Funny Girl, Kinky Boots. Newsies as well as Torch Song Trilogy (Tony®, Drama Desk, and OBIE Awards), La Cage aux Folles (Tony® and Drama Desk Awards), The Sissy Duckling (Humanitas Award), A Catered Affair (12 Drama Desk nominations), Safe Sex (Ace Award), Legs Diamond, Spookhouse, Flatbush Tosca, Common Ground, and more. His political editorials have been published in The New York Times, TV Guide, The Huffington Post, and broadcast on PBS's “In the Life”. His children's book, The Sissy Duckling, is now in its fifth printing. As an actor, Mr. Fierstein is known worldwide for his performances in films like Mrs. Doubtfire and Independence Day, and on stage in Hairspray (Tony Award®), Fiddler on the Roof, La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy (Tony Award®), and TV shows such as “Smash,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “The Good Wife,” “Cheers” (Emmy nomination), “The Simpsons,” and “Nurse Jackie.” Acclaimed originally for his groundbreaking writing and performance in his 1981 Torch Song Trilogy, Harvey Fierstein has refined and redefined the persona of the drag queen in the theater. Two years later, Fierstein brought that insight and humor into his book for the musical adaptation of La Cage aux Folles. As Frank Rich wrote in the New York Times, this “is the first Broadway musical ever to give center stage to a homosexual love affair – but don't go expecting an earthquake. The show at the Palace is the schmaltziest, most old-fashioned major musical Broadway has seen since ‘Annie,' and it's likely to be just as popular with children of all ages.”  Fierstein subsequently wrote the book for Legs Diamond (1988) with music and lyrics by Peter Allen, who also starred in the show. He did not return to Broadway until 2002, when he took on the role of Edna Turnblad in the musical adaptation of Hairspray (book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan; music by Marc Shaiman; lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman). According to Ben Brantley, Fierstein's performance as Edna “is not just a cross-dressing sight gag. She's every forgotten housewife, recreated in monumental proportions and waiting for something to tap her hidden magnificence.”  After playing Tevye in the 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof, Harvey Fierstein wrote the book and starred in the 2008 musical, A Catered Affair. As a writer and actor, Fierstein has won three Drama Desk Awards and four Tonys®, most recently for his portrayal of Edna in Hairspray. His most recent memoir is called I Was Better Last Night.
