On this 200th episode of the Connected Leadership Podcast, and as we celebrate its third year, Andy Lopata welcomes celebrated guest Janey Lee Grace. Janey is an Amazon No. 1 best-selling author and speaker, and she was co-presenter on the UK's biggest radio show, BBC Radio 2's Steve Wright in the Afternoon, for 24 years. Formerly, she was a backing singer with Wham!, Kim Wilde and Boy George, and had their own number 8 chart hit as Cola Boy with 7 Ways to Love. Janey has written five books on holistic living, including the number one Amazon best seller ‘Imperfectly Natural Woman', and her latest book ‘Happy Healthy Sober': Ditch the booze and take control of your life, which encourages everyone to look again at their relationship with alcohol. Janey has now dedicated her life to addressing "the alcoholic elephant in the room," advocating for an alcohol-free lifestyle. She recognises alcohol as a common factor in many social connections and explores the challenges of building relationships without the 'glue' of drinks. A major prompt for her came when she realised how her lifestyle of drinking roughly a bottle of wine a night sat quite at odds with her long-established career as a healthier-living advocate. Janey, who now hosts the popular Alcohol Free Life podcast, was struck by how readily accepted and indeed normalised the central place of alcohol had become within society. Her mission now is to highlight that every industry, not just entertainment, has a significant problem with heavy drinking. It's this prevalence and normalisation of alcohol in our society that Janey seeks to challenge by advocating for equal acceptance of the choice to not consume alcohol. Many professionals find alcohol to be a uniting component in establishing connections. Andy and Janey discuss how people can build relationships without depending on the 'glue' represented by alcohol. Siding with inclusivity and equal opportunities for all, Andy extends this conversation to those incompatible with traditional alcohol-based socialising. Janey emphasises that organisations have a pressing responsibility to eradicate the assumption that everyone drinks and combat the societal pressure to drink. She also proposes an alternative: Keep the ritual, change the ingredients,' keeping the culture intact while replacing unhealthy habits with healthier ones. The episode addresses the role of connection and community in aiding those trying to limit or stop their alcohol consumption. Janey underscores the immeasurable support she received from others in the same situation or those who've successfully pulled themselves out of it. This podcast sheds light on the shift organisations need to start making towards healthier, more inclusive, and more sustainable ways of connecting and conducting business. Whether you're engaged in social drinking or what Janey calls "grey area drinking," this episode is a valuable listen. It's an exploration of our relationship with alcohol and how it interacts with our efforts to connect and build relationships. Connect with Andy Lopata Website Connect with Janey Lee Grace Website

In this episode of The Healers Café, Manon Bolliger (facilitator and retired naturopath with 30+ years of practice) speaks with Janey Lee Grace about The Sober Club, sobriety coaching, NLP, EFT For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/janey-lee-grace Highlights from today's episode include: Janey Lee Grace So, I'd wake up at 3am, and, a voice would be saying to me, what are you doing? Stop it, this has to stop. This is not who you are, this is not authentic with anything you're meant to do. It's not okay. And it would be so clear and so strong that voice. Janey Lee Grace I used to justify myself well yeah, but the wine I have its good quality wine. It's organic wine. I mean I'm sorry but it's actually BS it really is. It's all just toxic liquid is what it is. That's that that's the reality of it. Janey Lee Grace Well, number one, I'd always say do a minimum 30 days of not drinking at all first, then you can just reset everything. But number two, the top tips would be set your own parameters around when you are going to drink then so is it, I don't know, Wednesdays and Saturdays or whatever it is for you. Set your own parameters, but then add in another rule. And that rule is that you commit to never drinking, if you are upset, or fearful or angry or stressed. Liz and Michelle are joined in this episode by Janey Lee Grace, Kate Baily and Mandy Manners to discuss sobriety. Both Liz and Michelle are feeling sober curious, to the point where Liz is already drinking a lot less. Both of their guests became sober years ago and today help others to do the same. They talk about the impact stopping drinking has, handling FOMO and getting the buzz without the booze. How sobriety reduces the impact menopause has on our health, confidence and our ability to sleep. They also offer tips on going sober when your partner does not want to do the same. KEY TAKEAWAYS You really can get the buzz without the booze. Don´t look at going sober as giving up something. If you do you will feel deprived and will slip back into drinking. In the UK we have been brainwashed into thinking alcohol is good for us, that we need it to have a good time. Alcohol definitely is not good for us. For example, it shrinks the brain. Liz´s menopausal brain fog has diminished since she stopped drinking. Supporting your body when you stop drinking helps. The podcast includes some fantastic tips. When you don´t drink you give yourself the best chance of better health. Becoming sober is a journey, it takes a while to get used to, but is worth the effort. We are all seasonal beasts, the time of year impacts how you feel and, therefore, how easy it is to maintain sobriety. There are other ways to get that relaxed feeling that you might have got from a glass of wine. Several are shared in the podcast. Non-alcoholic treats are a must. BEST MOMENTS “It's reframing. Giving up something it's such a negative, it is depriving. You're not giving up. You're just changing.” “Keep the ritual - Change the ingredients,” “If you want any kind of behavioural change, you need both the logic and the emotional piece.” “When you take alcohol out of the picture it actually opens you up to living life vibrantly.” “Change is hard, change is uncomfortable. But it's also an opportunity for growth.” EPISODE RESOURCES Book – Happy Healthy Sober by Janey Lee Grace Alcohol-Free Life Podcast The Sober Club Podcast episode with Dr. Anya Topiwala Love Sober Love Sober Podcast Mandy Manners Coaching Book – Love Your Sober Year by Kate Baily ABOUT THE GUESTS Janey Lee Grace Janey Lee Grace is a UK-based BBC presenter, and author of Happy Healthy Sober - ditch the booze and take control of your life. and founder of www.thesoberclub.com. – Helping Others to get the Buzz without the booze. Kate Baily and Mandy Manners It became clear to both Kate Baily and Mandy Manners that traditional methods and models of sobriety were often not gender-appropriate, trauma-informed, or holistic and so together they built programs, wrote books, and recorded a podcast to raise awareness around what we as women need to get sober.
