Join the conversation in our community at https://butjesusdrankwine.com/community. In this episode, we continue our deep dive into Dr. Lee Warren's 10 Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery, focusing on commandments 6 through 10. As freedom-from-alcohol coaches, we share how these powerful principles shape our approach to helping women break free from the overdrinking cycle. From prioritizing long-term well-being to understanding the transformative power of thoughts, we explore actionable steps—what we like to call Tiny Tinas—to help you take practical steps toward change. Throughout the conversation, we offer personal anecdotes, real-world applications, and insights on how to overcome the immediate discomfort that often comes with transformation. This episode is packed with advice for anyone looking to rewrite their story, not just in terms of addiction, but in breaking generational patterns, celebrating progress, and renewing your mind. Commandments 6-10: 6️⃣ I Must Love Tomorrow More Than I Hate How I Feel Right Now Hope is the key that pulls us forward. We talk about how focusing on the possibilities ahead can change your outlook on today's temporary discomfort, helping you take action toward a brighter future. 7️⃣ I Must Stop Making an Operation Out of Everything Life is hard, but not every challenge requires drastic measures. We discuss the importance of choosing humor, forgiveness, and simply moving forward—without making everything a major operation. 8️⃣ I Must Not Perpetuate—or Start—Harmful Generational Thought or Behavioral Issues in My Life or Family This is a game-changing commandment. It's all about breaking the cycle. You don't have to pass on trauma, shame, addiction, or fear. We explore how you can rewrite your family's story by making changes in your own life and actions. 9️⃣ I Must Believe That I'm Getting Better at What I'm Doing Growth is a fact, not a feeling. In this section, we dive into how consistency in doing the work—no matter how invisible it seems at first—leads to tangible growth. Trusting the process is key, even when progress feels slow.

Sara and Heather dive into what it means when that initial "spark" from early sobriety fades—and how to get it back. Whether you're 30 days in or six years alcohol-free, this episode is for anyone who's ever wondered, "Why doesn't this feel exciting anymore?" In this episode, we cover:
When you quit drinking, you go through periods of learning how to parent yourself on your alcohol-free journey. Whether you're a parent, child-free, or somewhere in between, Sara and Heather dive deep into the power of becoming your own inner caregiver—your inner mother, father, or adult—and how sobriety makes space for that transformation. Quitting alcohol isn't just about removing something toxic. It's about rebuilding your life, one foundational brick at a time. In this conversation, we explore what it looks like to truly take care of yourself with the same love, structure, and consistency you'd offer a child. Inside the episode: Why learning to "adult" again is a key part of early sobriety The power of reclaiming routines like brushing your teeth and feeding yourself regularly Shifting from external validation to inner trust and rest Managing money, clutter, and time without avoidance or overwhelm Reconnecting with your purpose and relationships—starting with you Why small goals build big confidence How to know when your life needs “mothering” and what to do about it The 8 Pillars of Self-Parenting These are the daily acts and deeper commitments that help you build a secure, alcohol-free foundation: Self-Care – From sleep and skincare to hydration and medical appointments Feeding Yourself Well – Cooking (or assembling!) meals regularly and planning ahead Goal Setting – Starting with small wins to build self-trust Keeping a Clean Space – Creating visual calm and organizing in a way that works for you Money Management – Moving from avoidance to awareness and setting up systems that support your growth Healthy Relationships – Cultivating connection, patience, and presence with others Time Management – Saying no to overbooking and learning to slow down Purpose & Work – Letting go of old identities and tuning into what lights you up If you're feeling off in any area of life, these eight pillars—and their four overarching themes (Health, Home, Purpose, and Community)—can help you pinpoint where your inner parent needs to step in.

Host: Drifter Guest: Julie Julie's Journey: From Addiction to Sobriety In this episode of the Silvertown podcast, Drifter welcomes Julie, a guest from the UK, who shares her compelling story of addiction, recovery, and the myriad of ways she has turned her life around. Julie discusses her initial encounters with alcohol during her teenage years, her time working in the high-pressure environment of the London trading floor, and the subsequent breakdowns that led her to reassess her life choices. Julie delves into her journey through therapy, the gradual buildup of her sobriety toolkit, and her experience with supportive communities like Smart Recovery. Now thriving five years sober, Julie explains how she maintains her mental and physical well-being today. Julie is business psychologist, breathwork facilitator, and emotional aromatherapist who helps people to find purpose, connection and vitality. Whether that is breaking free from addictions to alcohol and medication, or the repeated cycles and patterns of behaviours that keep us stuck, she is passionate about empowering people to feel better. Like so many, she spent years in a world where drinking was completely normalised and expected, and at times, even celebrated. From high-pressure corporate environments to social settings, alcohol was woven into everyday life, making it difficult to recognise when it was no longer serving her. In her early twenties, after enduring extreme emotional stress and workplace abuse whilst working on the trading floor in London, she experienced a brief episode of psychosis and hospitalisation. Julie was prescribed medication that she remained on for over a decade, and was also using alcohol to self medicate, which led to a slow process of disconnection, sedation, and losing touch with herself. Her story is ultimately one of healing, courage, self-discovery, and finding true freedom. Now, over five years sober, she is on a mission to help others step into clarity, vitality, and empowerment through holistic healing, breathwork, and deep inner work. Julie is the founder of Little Brown Bottles and Consciously Collaborative and blends Eastern and Western approaches to wellbeing, in and out of the workplace. Her latest project, The Freedom Challenge: 30 Days to an Alcohol-Free Life, offers a supportive and structured path for those questioning their relationship with alcohol and looking for a new way forward. Julie shares her raw, honest journey, speaking about the challenges of unlearning what we've been taught about alcohol, the unexpected emotions that come with early sobriety, and the powerful transformation that happens when we finally surrender and step into freedom. Find me on TikTok @hangoverwhisperer and IG @thehangoverwhisperer —Click here to TAKE THE QUIZ: Do you have a drinking problem or a thinking problem? Key Insights & Takeaways: Human Superpower: Imagination & Creation Humans live in a world of mental constructs. Time, money, rules, and even identities are creations of the human mind. Meaning doesn't exist in nature—we assign meaning to events and outcomes, deciding whether they are triumphs or tragedies. Manifestation & Attention Manifestation starts with an idea. What you focus on grows, and what you neglect dies. To manifest something new, you must first believe it's possible and give it your attention. Your brain is a tool that finds or creates evidence for what you believe. If you believe you have a problem, your brain will collect proof of that problem. How You Manifested a “Drinking Problem” It started with the idea that your drinking is a problem, and your brain went to work gathering evidence. Over time, your focus on drinking as a problem created a tangible reality with hangovers, conflicts, and negative emotions. Reframing & Manifesting a New Reality To manifest a healthy relationship with alcohol, start by paying attention to small wins where you are already in control. Examples of wins include: Waking up in the morning and not wanting a drink. Going through your day without drinking. Choosing not to drink and drive. Hangover Homework When experiencing a hangover, walk back through your memories of the previous night and find moments when you had a thought or impulse to stop drinking. Those thoughts, however fleeting, are wins—proof that you're capable of making different choices. Paying attention to these positive moments reinforces the idea that you can have a healthy relationship with alcohol. A Success Story: Rehearsing a Different Ending Colleen shares a personal story of noticing a pattern, mentally rehearsing a better choice, and successfully manifesting a different outcome the next time. By reflecting on past wins, you can prime your brain to respond differently in similar situations. Homework Assignment: Take 5 minutes to list all the times and ways you've demonstrated control over your drinking. Include moments when you weren't drinking, times you limited your intake, and any positive actions related to alcohol. Next time you have a hangover, reflect on the moments when you had the thought to stop or reduce your drinking, even if you didn't act on it. Count those moments as wins. Check out the Mindful Drinking course and listen to the episode titled Hangover Homework for a deeper dive into this exercise. Final Thoughts: Manifesting a healthier relationship with alcohol starts with paying attention to the right thoughts. Focus on what's working, notice the small wins, and train your brain to manifest the solution rather than the problem.

This one key shift can help us to broaden our perspective, let go of expectations and forgive ourselves. In this episode of The Sober Edge podcast, I focus on three key areas: Compassion for Others Compassion for Self Compassion for the World Compassion for ourselves can be the most difficult. We are so often our worst critics and while others may more easily forgive and forget, we might find ourselves ruminating on the past. With self-compassion, we can explore a softer and gentler approach. And, don't forget compassion towards your new AF life. Today, we welcome back Pastor David for his fifth appearance on the podcast! Pastor David shares his profound wisdom and practical advice on a topic that resonates with everyone: temptation. Whether it's alcohol, unhealthy habits, or other areas of life, temptation is something we all face—but it's not something we have to face alone. Pastor David starts by unpacking the critical distinction between temptation and sin, drawing from powerful biblical insights in the book of James and Jesus' own experience in the wilderness. He emphasizes that temptation does not come from God and that it's a distortion of our God-given desires. By understanding the roots of temptation, we can gain clarity and strength to overcome it. The conversation delves into the three primary categories of temptation and how they show up in our lives. Pastor David sheds light on how these challenges often stem from a deeper longing for connection and belonging and how recognizing these underlying desires can be the first step toward freedom. Throughout the episode, Pastor David and the hosts offer actionable strategies for conquering temptation. From fleeing tempting situations to using Scripture as a weapon against cravings, the discussion provides you with a roadmap for navigating moments of weakness. One powerful takeaway is the importance of speaking God's word aloud—reminding ourselves of His promises and His provision for a way out when we feel overwhelmed. Pastor David offers a message of hope and encouragement, emphasizing that true freedom is found in understanding our identity in God. Whether you're struggling with addiction or simply seeking guidance for daily challenges, this episode is packed with practical wisdom and spiritual tools to help you live a life rooted in faith. If you've ever wrestled with temptation and wondered how to break free, this conversation will leave you inspired and equipped to take the next step. JOIN THE BJDW COMMUNITY HERE! How do you feel about yourself when you wake up and realize you did it again? If you get hangxiety and shameovers after drinking, it's not your relationship with alcohol that needs to change. It's your relationship with yourself. The performance-based, perfectionistic mindset that fuels your success in other areas of your life also drives you into a cycle of self-sabotage. Because when you beat yourself up for making a mistake, you shut off access to the part of the brain that learns from mistakes. The solution to alcohol use disorder is a feeling…a feeling of confidence in your ability to learn. On today's episode, you'll learn: The exact mechanism that causes you to overdrink A step-by-step process to break the cycle of shame next time you wake up hungover Why the road to recovery must be paved with love, self-compassion and curiosity What daily updates from me? Today we're diving deep into why Jesus was our missing piece (peace) in the journey to true freedom from alcohol and why self-help alone can only take us so far. We share openly about our own paths, recounting how we once sought relief and connection in alcohol but ultimately found it empty and unfulfilling. Over time, we realized that no amount of worldly solutions could fill the void we were trying to soothe. Instead, we discovered that true peace, joy, and connection come from surrendering to Jesus. Through Him, we found freedom from the shame, anxiety, and constant searching that once defined our lives. We're not talking about religious rules or dogma here; we're talking about a personal relationship that transforms everything. We encourage listeners to start where they are, even if they're unsure of their faith, and to explore what a journey with Jesus might look like. Whether through reading the Bible, opening up in prayer, or simply having an honest conversation with God, we believe there's incredible power in inviting Jesus into freedom from alcohol. Join us as we share the personal stories and transformative experiences that have shown us why Jesus is truly the missing peace. We hope this conversation brings hope, encouragement, and the gentle nudge to explore a path to peace, not in isolation, but in the arms of a Savior who loves us fully. JOIN THE BJDW COMMUNITY HERE! We're thrilled to introduce our friend Ericka Andersen—a freelance writer, mom of two, lover of Jesus, and passionate sobriety advocate from Indianapolis. Ericka's story is one of incredible resilience: a journey from the grips of alcohol addiction to celebrating over four years of sobriety, all while staying deeply rooted in her faith. In this episode, we dive into her unique perspective on addiction, faith, and self-discovery—a conversation that's both eye-opening and beautifully relatable. Ericka opens up about her journey, sharing her early experiences with alcohol and the complicated generational ties that shaped her relationship with drinking. From the pressures of high school and college parties to the “work hard, play hard” culture as a young professional in Washington, DC, she explains how she found herself in a cycle that seemed normal but left her feeling deeply conflicted. Even while meeting every marker of outward success, Ericka quietly struggled, constantly questioning her drinking habits, the strain they placed on her spiritual life, and the toll on her well-being. She also discusses the strength she found in supportive communities and the importance of creating safe spaces for honest conversations about alcohol and faith. With the holiday season around the corner, Ericka offers heartfelt advice for anyone wrestling with sobriety during a time full of social gatherings and expectations. From staying grounded in faith to embracing community support, her message is a reminder that freedom from alcohol isn't just possible—it can lead to a fuller, more joyous life. This week on the podcast we welcome our resident Biblical scholar, Pastor David Walters, to dive deep into the complex relationship between faith and alcohol consumption. Together, we explore not only the personal challenges of finding satisfaction in earthly things but also the broader implications of how these choices intersect with Christian values and community practices. Pastor David sheds light on the concept of moderation and how, while it is often seen as a balanced approach, it may not always lead to true satisfaction, especially when it comes to alcohol. We address the tension between grace and responsibility, particularly within Christian communities where drinking has become normalized. We also explore the historical context of alcohol consumption in Christianity, raising important questions about the balance between grace and personal responsibility. David emphasizes that while grace is a gift, it doesn't give us free rein to indulge in anything we desire. Instead, grace calls us to live lives that are beneficial, constructive, and aligned with God's will—seeking not only our own good but the good of others. JOIN THE BJDW COMMUNITY HERE! Today Anne Nicely shares her powerful journey from battling alcohol addiction to finding freedom and purpose through her faith in Jesus Christ. Anne candidly recounts her early experiences growing up in a small Kentucky town, where her father's severe addiction deeply impacted her life. Despite vowing never to follow in his footsteps, Anne found herself caught in a cycle of binge drinking that left her overwhelmed with guilt, shame, and anxiety. She reflects on the pivotal moments that led her to surrender her life to Christ, the transformative power of vulnerability, and the role that sharing her struggles with others played in the freedom story. Anne emphasizes the importance of community and the necessity of being honest about one's struggles, noting that it was through listening to the stories of others and immersing herself in the Word that she found the strength to quit drinking for good. She shares how she initially kept her decision to quit drinking private, relying on podcasts and sermons to keep her grounded in her early days of sobriety. Anne's testimony is a powerful reminder of God's grace and the freedom that comes from fully surrendering to His will. You can follow Anne on instagram at @The_Bright_Eyed_Sober_Girl. In today's episode, we're diving into all the little and big ways that ditching alcohol has seriously boosted our confidence. We're chatting about how those small things—like actually remembering to wash off your mascara or not forgetting to leave money from the tooth fairy—make us feel more self-assured and on top of our game. And we're also getting into the bigger stuff, like setting boundaries and learning to be totally okay with the fact that we can't control what others think of us. These changes have helped us feel clearer, stronger, and more like the women we've always wanted to be. As we chat today, we're highlighting how alcohol tricks us into thinking it's boosting our confidence by lowering our inhibitions, but in reality, it's just chipping away at our self-worth and making us second-guess ourselves. By living alcohol-free, we've stopped that cycle of doubt and started fully embracing our decisions with clarity and self-trust. It's a whole new level of genuine confidence that doesn't come with the regrets that alcohol often leaves behind. We know you all love our list-of-10 episodes, so we hope you enjoy this one! And don't forget—you can always join the conversation in the BJDW community. We meet every week to talk about the episodes, share prayer requests, and just hang out as women who love Jesus (or are curious about Him) and are either living alcohol-free or looking to break free from it. She candidly discusses her previous belief that controlling and healing every aspect of her life was necessary, a mindset that ultimately became overwhelming and daunting. Caroline shares about a pivotal moment in her life—a significant dental health challenge—that led her to surrender to God's plan. This experience helped her realize that healing doesn't require perfection. Instead, it calls for trust and peace in the Lord. This newfound understanding brought a profound shift in her approach to healing and life. Join us as we chat with Caroline about the difference between her work before and after her spiritual conversion, emphasizing how God's guidance now plays a central role in her life. She discusses her journey of embracing change, finding authenticity, and surrendering to God's plan. Caroline also shares how she has overcome internal chaos, navigated misunderstandings, and dealt with unpopularity by staying true to herself. Throughout our conversation, Caroline highlights the importance of embracing nuance, asking questions, and finding joy in nature. Episode 489 – The Best Parts of an Alcohol-Free Life Today we have Chris. He is 56 years old and lives in Beacon, NY and took his last drink on April 18th, 2024. Registration for our next Alcohol-Free travel trip to Vietnam opens TODAY! This upcoming January 9th-20th, 2025, we're heading to this incredible Southeast Asia paradise for 10 days and 11 nights with 25 travelers who are done nursing hangovers. Welcome to our new listeners! We are glad to have you with us. You are in the right place. There is a whole new authentic life awaiting you, which isn't far away. Congratulations to Paul and his wife on the birth of their new baby boy! Better Help: www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored [04:10] Thoughts from Paul: A few weeks ago, Paul asked our Instagram followers what is the best part of being sober or living an alcohol free life. He shares with us some of the responses he received. The four biggest commonalities he saw were: 1) More authenticity 2) Less shame and regret 3) More energy 4) More clarity Think of the sobriety quote “you're giving up one thing for everything”. Sober Link [11:16] Paul introduces Chris: Chris says he is 56 years old and grew up in northern New Jersey, close to NYC. Cooking is his passion, and he has worked in the food and beverage industry all of his life, currently in a director role. Chris also enjoys the outdoors and currently lives in the Hudson Valley. Beyond the occasional night of overindulgence, Chris says his drinking was normal. He was around alcohol a lot in the industry he works in. After getting married, he and his wife enjoyed entertaining in addition to traveling to wineries and distilleries and building a collection. Over time Chris began drinking more than just wine with dinner, had booze all over the house and was drinking earlier in the day and more often. After he and his wife got divorced, Chris found himself drinking more heavily and was less discriminate of what he was drinking as long as he was getting his fix, as he calls it. He was breaking commitments and becoming less functional in his day-to-day life. Chris didn't drink heavily around other people but told his family in 2018 that he needed help. He went into treatment and was able to gain 14 months. He was part of a sober community called Ben's Friends geared towards those in the service industry. Chris was able to gain some sobriety time but had a series of stops and starts with several more visits to rehab as well. Currently at 34 days, Chris is working on rebuilding his life. He knows time will heal his relationships with family, and he is attending IOP for accountability. He is spending a lot of time outdoors and is grateful that the weather has been nice. He attends AA meetings, Café RE chats, and participates in meetings with Ben's Friends. Missing meetings is a non-negotiable for Chris and he also makes sure to nurture himself physically and spiritually. Chris' best sober moment: being present with his partner while on vacation. Chris' parting piece of guidance: stay connected. Café RE – promo code OPPORTUNITY waives set up fee. When I was drinking I used alcohol to check out after a hard day, numb out from irritation and resentment, make the monotony of adulting less boring and as a reward to look forward to for getting through another week. And when drinking left me with too many hangovers, sleepless nights and crushing anxiety I finally decided that I didn't want to feel that way anymore and (slowly) pieced together 30, 60, 100, 180+ days alcohol-free. It's not easy, but it is pretty clear how to do the “sobriety” thing. When you don't drink, you're sober! But in order to “stay” sober, learning how to practice emotional sobriety can keep you balanced and happy in an alcohol-free life. Emotional sobriety is all about handling your emotions in a healthy, balanced way without turning to alcohol to cope with life's challenges. It's really important for long-term recovery because ignoring your mental and emotional health can get you in a place where it's really attractive to escape with alcohol. 4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women.
