In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we bring you a conversation centered around queer mental health and borderline personality disorder, with Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, Jordan Werner. Jordan discusses the complexities of queer mental health and the patterns she sees in her LGBT-identifying clients: anxiety, shame, and identity issues. Jordan discusses the employment of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in her practice: a modality developed for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Jordan explains the symptoms of BPD, common traits to look out for, and the challenges of diagnosing personality disorders. The discussion also covers the intersectionality of mental health and marginalized communities, the perception of BPD as a patriarchal diagnosis, and the potential for recovery through therapy. Lastly, Jordan teaches us TIPP Skills for when we feel dysregulated and want to calm ourselves down. The resources mentioned in this episode are: "I Hate You, Don't Leave Me" by Jerold J. When the first edition of I Hate You--Don't Leave Me, the groundbreaking, bestselling book by today's special guest Jerold Kreisman, MD, was published in 1989, very little information on Borderline Personality Disroder was available to either professionals or the general public. As BPD began to infiltrate the "American consciousness", a few articles vaguely outlining the disorder appeared in consumer magazines. Dr. Kreisman recognized the need for clear understanding and effective treatment of BPD, and wrote this book to provide desperately needed information to the general public, afflicted individuals, family and friends, and treating professionals. Public awareness of Borderline Personality Disorder has grown significantly from what it was in 1989. Specific therapies and drugs targeted at the disorder have since been developed. While the prognosis for patients was previously bleak two decades ago, it is now much more positive. Yet, despite these advancements, the stigma still runs rampant. The BPD illness continues to confuse the general public and terrify many professionals. Dr. Kreisman has kindly agreed to be with us today to explain what Borderline Personality Disorder is and help us understand the behavior of those afflicted with it, in the hopes of helping to erase the stigma associated with it. Jerold J. Kreisman, MD is a psychiatrist and leading expert on borderline personality disorder. He is coauthor of the best seller I Hate You, Don't Leave Me, which is considered a classic of both the popular and academic literature on BPD, and has been completely revised and updated in 2010. He is also author of Sometimes I Act Crazy, written to educate family and friends. Dr. Kreisman produces a blog for Psychology Today, lectures widely in the US and abroad, and is in private practice in St. Louis, MO.

First things first: On May 7, 2019 a tragedy struck. Freya Larsen, who was my sister-in-law's best friend, faced her boyfriend, who held a pistol level with her forehead from approximately a foot away. He pulled the trigger once, and delivered Freya a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Adding to the tragedy, she was well educated in such matters, having served as a social worker in child and family services. She knew the signs, and had even helped friends and family to remove themselves from violent and otherwise abusive relationships in the past. Nevertheless, even after multiple incidents of physical abuse before that fateful day, she stayed in one herself, and the cost for doing so was her life. I say this not in judgement, for it is far from my place to do so, but to highlight that even one who knew all the rules, the signs and the potential outcomes of such a relationship could find themselves within the same cycle of abuse that is far more common that anyone would like to admit. That's why this episode of the podcast exists. I felt the need to honor her legacy of service, and fighting for those with no voice, by doing what I could to help educate and inform people about how these kinds of things happen, what to look for in your relationships and in those of your loved ones, how to best prevent yourself from entering into a similar situation and what to do should you find yourself already in one. So, I reached out to my friend Jeremy Fox. He is a licensed therapist, and was already scheduled to come on the podcast, but when Freya was murdered, I reached out to him and asked if he would be alright with changing the focus of this conversation to one which would serve to help people gain a better understanding of relationships and the problems that can arise within them. He was very gracious in his consent, and brought his thoughtfulness and expertise to the table with great care. There are many resources which are mentioned in the show, and Jeremy was kind enough to send me a list to give you guidance on pursuing them if you're interested. You'll find that below. I'm very grateful to Jeremy for his help in creating this episode to aid in honoring the legacy of Freya Larsen. Be vigilant. Have courage. Love well. Want more from Jeremy?
