Amir Levine, associate professor of psychiatry at Columbia University and co-author of Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find—and Keep—Love, explains the origins and science behind attachment theory and how human bonding is a necessary element “from the moment we are born until we die.”  As infants, humans' bond between mother or caregiver is essential, what Levine calls “a necessary element in our thriving, just as much as food and water.” When those patterns of attachment are formed, they can also carry through into adulthood and impact subsequent bonds and attachments. Attachment theory was pioneered by British psychiatrist and child development specialist John Bowlby, whose research included working with children displaced during The Blitz in WWII London.  “What they noticed [was] even though they were able to give them food and shelter, because there were so many, they didn't pay much attention to engaging with them,” Levine explains. “A lot of these very young infants and kids failed to grow properly and develop.”

Perhaps the only silver lining of learning about your attachment style is realizing that it can be healed and repaired, or at least that's how Anna sees it. On today's episode, Nina and Anna unpack their results from the https://www.attachmentproject.com/attachment-style-quiz/ (Attachment Style Quiz) and discuss the current research behind how attachment styles are formed. They reflect on familial and biological factors that they believe have influenced their attachment styles and the work that they continue to do to become more secure individuals.  There are four main attachment styles: anxious, avoidant, disorganized, and secure. They start to develop in utero, are put into place by 18 months old, and firmly developed by the age of four. Anna explores how her anxious attachment most likely came from experiencing emotional neglect as a child and not getting the comfort that she needed. She illustrates how this has affected her as an adult and how she's working on cultivating safe connections.  On the other end of the spectrum, Nina's test result revealed that she has secure attachment. She admits that if she had answered the questions 10 years earlier, the results might've been different, but she's learned to openly express her emotions and depend on her husband. She shares her perspective on attachment styles as a mother and ways that she sees it showing up in her four-year-old son.  Listen to the episode on https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-be-human/id1575612024 (Apple Podcasts), https://open.spotify.com/show/1V8taFSZQDpMcXkrP5dGrs?si=PtYeksWSRLGn_vu1vWBvMw&dl_branch=1 (Spotify), https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5zaW1wbGVjYXN0LmNvbS9yTHpBOUg2Mg (Google Podcasts), https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fa34c28b-2ac5-49cb-9fc7-15328379d789 (Amazon Music), https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-how-to-be-human-84625355/ (iHeartRadio), https://www.stitcher.com/show/how-to-be-human-5 (Stitcher), or on your favorite podcast platform Topics Covered: Psychologist John Bowlby‘s work on attachment theory How your early relationship with your caregivers influences how you build relationships as an adult Looking at the relationship between intergenerational trauma and attachment styles When the workload of motherhood starts to overshadow the emotional and physical needs of a child  The body and intuition component of attachment styles  Resources Mentioned: https://www.amazon.com/Attached-Science-Adult-Attachment-YouFind/dp/1585429139/ref=tmm_pap_title_0 (Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find - and Keep - Love by Amir Levine and Rachel Heller) https://www.amazon.com/Adult-Children-Emotionally-Immature-Parents/dp/1626251703/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2XRRLTF5X82ZV&keywords=children+of+emotionally+immature+parents&qid=1662487118&s=books&sprefix=children+of+emotionally+immature+parents%2Cstripbooks%2C170&sr=1-1 (Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents: How to Heal from Distant, Rejecting, or Self-Involved Parents by Lindsay C. If I had a dollar for everytime I've heard someone express feeling unworthy simply because they are single, I would have, like, so many dollars. Seriously. Our society has a way of glorifying coupledom that leaves many folks feeling like finding “the one” is the sole/soul purpose of life. It doesn't help that our media (I'm looking at you, Disney) tells girls that they will magically be saved one day and that their lives can finally begin once they fall in love.  So, then we enter our teenage years being told that if a boy likes us (forgive the gender binary here), he will be mean to us, so no wonder we put up with bullshit from partners in our adult years. There has already been a message programmed that toxic behavior simply just means we're broken and need to work harder to MAKE that person love us. But what if you could change how you view this entire narrative? Change how you view your singlehood? Change what you truly believe you deserve in your intimate partnership? Spoiler alert: you can. This week, I dial up my gal, Giovanna Capozza, a recovering love addict, author, and coach who has literally written the book on breaking up with the addictive “lovesick” behaviors you may be exhibiting in your dating life. If you find yourself shapeshifting to please your partner, ruminating over every little thing they do or say, or cancel all your plans to accommodate them, you won't want to miss this. And, you may actually be a little bit lovesick. Tune in and find out. This pod explores: How you might be using your singlehood as a “waiting room” for your life to begin and what to do about it The four primary attachment styles (yes, there are actually four!) In this week's episode, we break down what attachment styles are and explain how this "science of love" can help you build, maintain or improve your relationships; whether romantic ones or friendships, family,...If you have been feeling misunderstood in the way you handle your relationships or even repeating patterns- in your dating/married life or else- this episode is for you.Attachment styles can be categorized as secure or insecure. Secure people represent 50% of the population and are comfortable with intimacy while insecure people struggle with it, either associating it with a loss of independence or craving it to the point of worrying about it constantly. There are 3 types of insecure attachment styles: anxious attachment, avoidant attachment and "anxious avoidant" attachment, which is a mix of the first two. Learning about attachment styles was life changing for both of us as it brought awareness to how we were most likely to react in certain situations; it taught us what we need to feel safe or "secure" and how to communicate that.We hope that this episode can have that same impact on you, maybe even help you realize what style you are, and hopefully teach you how to recognize it in others as well. The book we recommended for everyone to read is called:"Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How it can Help you Find Love and Keep Love" by Amir Levine & Rachel S.F. Heller.Let us know your thoughts and if you like this type of episode ! ----------------- Follow along Lu & Lili Jasmijn as they explore what it means to be a multidimensional woman in the 21st century. Talking about taboo topics freely to normalize them. Hoping to inspire you to do the same in your life! New episode on every major streaming platform every other Wednesday!
