Attachment wounds are emotional injuries that develop based on painful experiences with those we care about. These experiences create a kind of blueprint we carry around for how relationships work, and when that internal model is based on fear and pain, it's hard for our relationships to thrive. Somatic therapist Elizabeth Ferreira joins the show to help us understand how we can heal old wounds and develop more secure forms of relating. Elizabeth and Forrest explore how early experiences shape our relationships, with a particular focus on a common paradox: deeply wanting connection while simultaneously fearing intimacy. They discuss fearful attachment, how Elizabeth approaches working with attachment wounds in clinical practice, complex PTSD, self-abandonment, facing our dreaded experience, setting healthy boundaries, and navigating relationships where fearful attachment patterns are present. Lyn is joined by relationship therapist and coach, Bridgitte Green, to talk about effective communication in relationships. They delve into the importance of communication in maintaining healthy and fulfilling relationships. Bridget emphasises the significance of 'listening', being specific about needs, and showing respect for each other in our conversations.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Effective communication in relationships is crucial for understanding and avoiding misunderstandings. Specificity in communication about needs and wants is essential to ensure clarity and to avoid assumptions. Taking time to actively listen, repeat back, and avoid interruptions can improve understanding & communication in relationships. Resentments can build up when communication is lacking, so it's important to address and discuss issues openly. Showing respect, listening attentively, and being mindful of body language can enhance communication and strengthen relationships. BEST MOMENTS "Aways listen and speak with respect to your partner. If we speak with respect, then we can prevent those conversations that blow up." "Your relationship is a living, breathing entity. You wouldn't leave anything that's living and breathing. So don't leave your relationship to starve."  "I think quite often we're sometimes so keen to prove our point that we're not actually listening to them." "True love starts with opening our hearts." Elle this week reflects on the stress of existing as a trans person (and more generally a minority person) in the world today. She talks about the weight of discouragement and hopelessness that some trans people get covered by, and why it shows up for us. Among other themes, Elle recommends the work by Erin in the Morning who tracks anti transgender legislation in the United States (read with caution because the facts can be depressing). In addition, she references the concept of Minority Stress which is widely considered a significant stress factor by medical providers. She closes with some practical tips for managing the Impending Doom including a recommendation for those who are able to write your representatives (check out this guide). Elle has therapy openings available!! If you are in the State of California and looking for (or know someone who is) a therapist to work with on a virtual basis, please reach out. Elle is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT#142998), Supervised by Traci Lowenthal, PsyD (CA#22910). She currently accepts private pay only, but has a few sliding scale spots available for those who are in financial difficulty. -What does codependency look like in teen boys? -How can adolescence be a “hot bed” for codependency due to developmental, social, and cultural factors? -What are the long-term consequences of unaddressed codependency in the lives of young men? Welcome to Episode 145! This week, I am joined by Sipan Nazaryan, Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, to discuss codependency in teen boys. I for one do not think of teen boys when the word codependency is mentioned, however, Sipan is here to educate us on what codependency looks like in the lives of male teens with their friends, parents, mentors, and romantic interests. We explore Sipan's approach when he notices codependent behavior in his teen boys and how he connects with them, especially those who are resistant to therapy. We take a look at codependency between parents and their teen sons and how it harms their ability to individuate. We conclude with hearing about the long-term consequences of unaddressed codependency in these young men. It's a must-listen! More on thise week's guest: Sipan Nazaryan, Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, graduated from Pepperdine the summer of 2023 with a masters in Clinical Psychology. He has worked under Kent Toussaint at Child & Teen Counseling for his traineeship. Sipan currently is working under Anita Avedian at Anger Management 818 / Avedian Counseling Center for his associateship.  https://childteencounseling.org/  https://angermanagement818.com/  Contact: sipan@counseling-centers.com  Connection Parenting Book Sipan references: https://www.amazon.com/Connection-Parenting-Through-Instead-Coercion/dp/1932279768  More deets on the episode: We begin with hearing Sipan's definition of codependency: an addiction to a specific relationship; where one has difficulty distinguishing where they end and someone else begins. And how does that look in the population Sipan specializes in working with: teen boys? Codependent teen boys often see themselves through the eyes of another; they're perspective is skewed through another's lens; they take in another person's perspective to an extreme; they find purpose in a relationship; they “have to” be with someone in particular; and they lose their friends due to an over-focus on another relationship. On social media, these types of relationships are often referred to as “my twin flame” or “soul mate.”  So what does codependency look like in teen boys (since we don't often expect them to be codependent)? Sipan shares how teen boys are susceptible to codependency since they are in a state attempting to individuate while also susceptible to the influence of their parents, friends, mentors, coaches, etc. This phase of life requires boundary setting and group embeddedness, however, if they struggle to set boundaries or become too embedded in their relationships, they can fall into the grasp of codependency.  And how does Sipan approach working with teen boys, especially those who are resistant to therapy? Sipan acknowledges how this population is often difficult to work with for therapists. Through a series of steps, Sipan connects with his teen client's parents, establishes the teen client's autonomy in therapy, sets boundaries with the parents, and connects with his client through the self-object and timeline activities.  Sipan reflects on how work with teen boys and their parents who were codependent on them. This looks like the parent projecting anxiety onto their son, being hyper-protective of them, and an overall discomfort with their son individuating. Sipan works with the parents by providing psychoeducation to help them connect with their son on a deeper level to avoid always providing instruction or correction to him while lessening their codependent grip.  We end with hearing a message of warning and hope for young men: if their codependency is unaddressed, their relationships are left fragile and lacking stability. With help from therapy, teen boys are able to create strong, stable relationships and can cope with difficulty much better.  Thanks for coming on Sipan! And thank you for listening, my dear listener! Like many people in my generation, I was rock music-obsessed when I was growing up. My wall was covered in posters of Zeppelin, Rush, Van Halen, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, and others.  And I constantly fantasized about becoming a rockstar. Obviously, that was not my path. Yet, I still wonder, what would it actually be like to become a rockstar? And, regarding this episode, what would it be like to become a rock star in a mega-band and lose that status? Harder still, what would it be like to watch your rockstar bandmates enjoy international fame to levels seen by very few bands create platinum records, play halftime at the Super Bowl, and win a bunch of Grammys? I had the pleasure of sitting down with Maroon 5 founding drummer, Ryan Dusick (https://www.ryandusick.com/), who shared what that was like. Ryan was there from the early days long before Maroon 5 was even a thing, back when they were known as Kara's Flowers. He grew up with Adam Levine and other band mates. Together, they created what I consider one of the greatest albums of all time, Songs About Jane. Ryan was part of the band's enormous success. and, as you will hear, anxiety, perfectionism, and other phenomena sidelined him, eventually taking him out of his coveted position as drummer. You will hear what it was like to deal with the loss, the FOMO, the social comparison, struggles with addiction, and a kind of heartache few can imagine. But it doesn't end there. In this interview, you'll hear how he found and continues to find meaning afterwards. Today, Ryan is an Associate Marriage and Family Counselor, and I am confident he is and will continue to become a superb therapist. He wrote a phenomenal memoir I loved so much that I listened to it twice called Harder to Breathe: A Memoir of Making Maroon 5, Losing It All, and Finding Recovery. So, listen in as Ryan and I get into life before, during, and after Maroon 5. Book link: https://tinyurl.com/y464mudu

When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!” 1 Kings 18:36-39 (NIV) I searched for a man among them who would build up a wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one. Ezekiel 22:30 (NIV) The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.  Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years! Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.  James 5:16b-18 (NLT) LINKS: Cyndie de Neve BOOKS BY CYNDIE CLAYPOOL DE NEVE: God Confident Kids Unshaken (Co-authored with Sally Burke) Start With Praise (Co-authored with Sally Burke) MOMS IN PRAYER ·      New to Moms in Prayer? Jeren Montgomery is a family therapist and also Bridget's husband. As if Bridget didn't already have enough projects, last year the two started Factory Settings, a podcast that explores how built-in biases affect the way people consume information and form opinions. They visited The Unspeakable to talk about how their own settings affect their relationship and what they've discovered in the process of developing the podcast. They also describe how they met in recovery and explain how seeing the world through the lens of sobriety affects their approach to the subjects they cover. This is Bridget's third appearance on The Unspeakable, but it feels like the first time!   Guest Bios:   Bridget Phetasy is a writer, comedian and Twitter addict. She is host of the podcast Walk-Ins Welcome and Factory Settings which she co-hosts with her husband, Jeren Montgomery. She also stars in her satirical comedy show Dumpster Fire available on YouTube. LGBTQIA+ Affirmative Therapy & ParentingWhat does it actually mean to be an LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist or parent? It may not be what you think. Today we're honored to welcome Dr. Rebeks Clark Mane and Aba Horthy, highly trained therapists who specialize in this field as well as having their own lived experience as members of the community. The four of us explore this critically important topic with more depth and detail than we've ever gotten into before. What if we lived in a world where the model of responding to coming out (from parents, therapists, and others) was not about how hard life would be as an LGBTQIA+ person, but rather normalized and celebrated the experience and the uniqueness of the individual? This is what Rebeks and Aba teach us about in new, eye-opening ways. We know that outcomes are significantly more positive when LGBTQIA+ youth and adults are affirmed, encouraged, heard, seen, and believed. But what specifically does that look like? And, what might we be doing unknowingly that's causing harm, even if we think we're trying to be supportive? Rebeks is a transmasculine nonbinary therapist who loves working with folx in the "gray spaces" of identity. Aba is a queer mixed nonbinary therapist passionate about helping clients find and express their authentic selves. Both are Associate Marriage and Family Therapists and LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapists.Throughout our conversation, Rebeks, Aba, and Jackie share parts of their story, their relationship with their families before and after coming out, and the role affirmative therapy (and non-affirmative therapy) played in their journey. They also provide tips and advice for therapists and parents dealing with their kids' transition, how to support queer, nonbinary, and trans kids, and how to avoid disconfirming words and actions that can cause deep trauma. We also discuss the BIPOC queer, trans, and nonbinary experience, the white supremacist roots of the binary approach to queer representation, the informed consent model for gender affirming surgery, letters needed for surgery and their purpose, the need for cisgender folks to listen and learn with an open mind, gender policing, gender gatekeeping, media representation, the recent episode of The Problem with Jon Stewart called The War Over Gender, and much more. There are so many ways, so many careers we can choose where helping people is the central thing. And the type of helping that we are interested in and pursue says at least as much about us, if not more, than the fact that we want to help in general.Yet, if you ask a therapist why we decided to get into this field, the answer you're most likely to get is to help people. But what are some of the other deeper, more complicated, maybe less flattering answers to why we became therapists? And why is it important to look at those reasons up close?Today I'm joined by Ben Fineman and Carrie Wiita, co-hosts of the Very Bad Therapy podcast, where they not only feature client stories about negative experiences with therapy, but they also call into question a lot of the conventional wisdom about what makes therapy effective and what makes therapists skillful. We're discussing the reasons we become therapists, consciously and unconsciously, and how that shows up in the therapy room for us and for our clients.Ben Fineman is the co-host of the Very Bad Therapy podcast.
