Send us a Text Message.Discover the surprising connection between anger and murder as we unpack the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 5:21-26. Our exploration isn't just an academic exercise; it's a journey to the heart of the gospel, challenging us to dismantle the idols and presumptions we hold dear. We'll reveal the depth of the sixth commandment and why our adherence to it often misses the mark, leaving us in desperate need of Christ's redemptive grace. Unpack common misunderstandings and grasp the breadth of God's law, as we seek transformation through prayer and reflection.Feel the weight of reconciliation in your own life as we dissect what it means to love our neighbors and ourselves. The discussion moves beyond the simple avoidance of conflict, examining Jesus' call for proactive peacemaking and the hard work of healing fractured relationships. With humility and the gospel's guidance, we'll understand the ways in which our pride can inhibit genuine peace. Whether it's in our families, workplaces, or communities, this episode offers practical wisdom on how to live in harmony with one another.Lastly, we confront the allure of legalism and the beauty of grace. Many seek to justify themselves by the letter of the law, missing its true purpose—to lead us to Jesus. By embracing the gospel, we return to the law not as a tool for self-righteousness but as a mirror reflecting our transformed lives in Christ. Whether you've walked with Jesus for years or are just curious about the Christian faith, this episode promises to challenge your heart and offer a fresh perspective on life, law, and the love of God.Support the Show.

Send us a Text Message.Discover the unexpected beauty and challenge of Jesus' teachings on love as they intersect with our complex, modern lives. Our latest Theology Pub gathering stirred a captivating dialogue that revealed our innate desire for love, and yet how we often fall short in extending it to those who don't fit within the confines of our affection. We delved deep into the biblical command to love our enemies as found in Matthew 5:43-48, contrasting it with the comfort of selective love, and unpacking the selfless nature of the divine love we're called to emulate.Joined by insightful guests who shared their scriptural wisdom, we grappled with loving our adversaries—a notion that confronts our cultural norms head-on. This discussion wasn't just theoretical; it was a hands-on guide for living out a love that reflects God's glory, aligns us with His ways, and transforms our interactions. We looked at how loving those who oppose us isn't just a lofty ideal but a concrete way to demonstrate God's presence in our lives, challenging listeners to lean into this countercultural call. Our conversation concluded with a candid reflection on the gospel's impact on our ability to love genuinely and without reservation. We tackled the tough truth that while we were once estranged from God, His profound love offers redemption and a model for our relationships. Love, we're reminded, is not just a fleeting emotion but an ongoing debt, a commitment to embody mercy, kindness, and justice. Together, we prayed for the grace to courageously display God's character to all, including our erstwhile enemies, and for the strength to live transformed by the gospel's power.Support the Show.

Send us a Text Message.Have you ever caught yourself casting a harsh judgment, only to realize you may be guilty of the same flaw? This episode peels back the layers of judgment we encounter both personally and in scripture, particularly focusing on Jesus's call for introspection in Matthew 7:1-5. With our special guest, we navigate the intricacies of judgment, uncovering how the gospel challenges us to balance fairness with mercy. We address how quick we can be to spotlight the shortcomings of others, and the invitation to turn that discerning eye inward, fostering a community of grace rather than condemnation. The Apostle Paul's teachings in Romans 2 serve as a backdrop as we confront the universal nature of sin and the folly of self-righteousness. It's a candid discussion about the mirror that the gospel holds up to our lives, revealing the hypocrisy in our judgments and the necessity for personal repentance. By embracing the gospel's transformative power, we discuss how believers can grow in humility and extend genuine empathy towards others, all the while grappling with the paradox of feeling more burdened by sin as one grows in faith. To wrap up, we explore the liberating message of the gospel and its call to a merciful life, free from the shackles of hypocritical judgment. The conversation turns to the significance of self-examination under the light of Christ's sacrifice and how this should reshape our interactions, inviting mercy into our community. Our ending prayer reaches out to both believers and seekers alike, encouraging a turning away from self-reliance and towards the redemptive embrace of faith in Jesus Christ. We delve into biblical truths and personal insights to uncover the robust love that gentleness embodies, especially for Christian men who may wrestle with accepting this trait. This conversation beckons us to evaluate our approach to others, drawing from the wisdom of Proverbs and the life-transforming kindness Jesus modeled. We contemplate the nuanced needs of those who cross our paths—acknowledging that some are burdened by fatigue while others might be lost on their journey. Send us a Text Message.Have you ever grappled with the paradoxes of Jesus' teachings, especially those surrounding the concept of meekness and Old Testament laws? This episode takes you through a profound exploration of these enigmatic instructions, such as the "eye for an eye" maxim and Jesus' transformative reinterpretation of ancient justice. We dismantle myths surrounding what seems to be a call for retaliation, revealing instead a balanced approach to justice and mercy. I'm joined by theologians and scholars who help dissect these topics, providing clarity and new perspectives on how we can apply the principles of measured justice and gospel humility to our modern lives.Take a moment to reflect on how you respond to personal offenses - do you react with anger, or do you consider turning the other cheek? We delve into the complexities behind Jesus' command, providing four distinct scenarios that challenge our everyday reactions. From the subtle nuances of navigating online disputes with dignity to the broader implications of seeking justice over revenge, our conversation unveils the balance between restraint and action. Through engaging examples and the wisdom of our guests, we shed light on how to embody grace in the face of insult and maintain a posture of gospel-centered meekness. Finally, we confront the real-world dilemma of aiding those in need, such as the homeless, while exercising discernment to avoid enabling misuse. Our discussion extends to embracing gospel humility and self-denial, inspired by Christ's ultimate sacrifice for the unworthy. By examining Jesus' hyperbolic teaching style and the law of retribution, we encourage a heart transformation that aligns with gospel values, urging listeners to respond to every interaction with a spirit of sacrificial humility that echoes the life and heart of Jesus. Join us as we seek to cultivate a life of impact, marked by the humility and meekness that Christ himself exemplified.Support the Show.

What is the Gospel? Could you answer that question in simple terms, to a person who was unfamiliar with our Christian jargon? The Gospel is so crucial that the Apostle Paul Himself called it a matter of “first importance” in 1 Corinthians 15:3, so we'd better figure it out quickly. To help us answer this question, we're joined today by someone who has helped to deepen my own understanding of the Gospel, Joe Thorn. Joe Thorn is a good friend and has been my family's pastor since we became members of Redeemer Fellowship in St. Charles, Illinois in 2021. He has written books like Note to Self and Experiencing the Trinity, and he is an extremely based, and gospel-based teacher of the word. In this episode you'll learn: • How the Gospel finally clicked for Joe Thorn, the former Satanist—and what happened next. • Why Paul says the Gospel is “of first importance” in 1 Corinthians 15:3. • Why God doesn't just save his elect directly, rather than using us. • Who is the audience of God's theater of redemption? • What the Gospel actually is. • How Jesus' death 2000 years ago can pay for our sins today. • Where we go wrong in defining and sharing the Gospel. • Whether the Gospel is the dividing line between true and false churches. • How to share the Gospel without gimmicks. ---- Resources: The THINK Method Full Guide (Free): https://thethink.institute/thinkmethod/ NET Bible (with epic footnotes): https://netbible.org/bible/ Free Bible Commentaries from BibleHub: https://biblehub.com/commentaries/ ---- Please support this work!
