On this episode of the Non Profit Happy Hour we talk with Joshua Baker about the organizations work to make the Lloyd district one of Portland's most sustainable neighborhoods.
Dr. Joshua Baker, first author of a paper recently published in “Arthritis & Rheumatology”, “Associations Between Low Serum Urate, Body Composition, and Mortality“, is our guest today. Dr. Baker, recognizing the controversy in whether low serum urate or uric acid (UA) level contribute to adverse outcomes, set out to evaluate the relation between low serum UA levels and sarcopenia, to assess whether sarcopenia confounds associations between these low levels and mortality.
The history of how cultures, philosophers, and governments have approached the idea of self defense spans much further than the Second Amendment. While in our day, most arguments of the subject center on contemporary events, agendas, and problems, by peeling back the layers of history, we can humble ourselves before the summation of human knowledge and argumentation to try to better understand what we think. Sometimes we read in order to better understand something, and other times we investigate in order to better represent our conclusions. Both are accomplished in Joshua Baker's book, Deinfringe, where he traces a long series of philosophical as well as legal arguments regarding an individual's right to self defense. Joshua joins us on the REDACTED Culture Cast to discuss no only what led to the book's creation, but an extension of the arguments that produced it. You can find the book on Amazon. Joshua Baker, creator of the BBC's ‘I'm Not A Monster' podcast
It's been seven years since British teen Shamima Begum, then 15 years old, entered Syria with two school friends to join ISIS. One of Begum's friends has since gone missing, and the other was reportedly killed in an airstrike on Raqqa. Begum herself disappeared for years before encountering a journalist in al-Hawl prison camp in 2019, begging to return to the U.K. for the safety of her child, who subsequently died. Now, the BBC says the man who smuggled the girls into Syria was actually a double agent, providing information to Canadian intelligence as he trafficked for ISIS. A new book by U.K.-based writer Richard Kerbaj also accuses Canada of asking British officials to help cover up the connection. BBC journalist Joshua Baker has been interviewing Begum for the upcoming podcast, I'm Not A Monster: The Shamima Begum Story. Today, what he's learned about Begum's journey and Canada's involvement from a dossier on her alleged smuggler.
What would it mean for your business if thousands, tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of consumers in your target demographic were introduced to your company? This is what Joshua Baker does. Mark and Joshua discuss how video content can save your business time and money in this episode of "How's Your ePresence?"
In our lives, we can look back and see how the influence of one person has impacted our life's trajectory. Throughout the journey of this podcast and video podcast, numerous guests have chronicled the importance of that one teacher, that one mentor, that one friend who had the ability to see past the current circumstances of their present lives, to a greatness within them that was yearning to be released. For Pastor Joshua Baker, that man was a preacher who placed a hand on Josh's heart and freed him from his addictions and the barriers to a life of discipleship to Jesus Christ. It is this Christ relationship that is the fundamental relationship in Josh's life, and the foundation of his ministry as a Campus Pastor at Alive Church in Orlando, FL. Josh at a glance is not what springs to mind when you think of a man who preaches the Good News of the Bible (neither was Saul, nor even Moses for that matter). He dances to Thundercat's Funny Thing (and has a serious shoulder shrug to go with it), raps his own poetry, has hundreds of thousands of people watching his Instagram Reels' antics and isn't afraid to go vocal cord-to-vocal cord with Mariah Carey while he drives around Orlando, FL. And while it's all good fun and laughter, underneath the carefree persona, is a man who has periodically run from his calling, survived a drunk driving car accident that left him in a coma and overcome the deep hurts and disappointments he experienced at the hands of people in the church who were supposed to be his mentors and guides. Josh's journey reminds us of what happens when you stop running and start facing the pain of your life. When you find the capacity within your heart to forgive yourself and those who have caused you great disappointments. In a time when religion and commitment to following any religious doctrine can be used as a tool to divide us, Josh uses his pulpit to call upon us, the Church and the world to start a love revival. To love all people. To love all people abundantly.Alive ChurchJoshua on IGPatrick's WebsitePatrick on IGAt the Podium on IGPatrick on LinkedIn
To kick off the new series we're discussing a little about the history behind Black activism in sports. Many athletes in the past have taken huge risks just to make sure their voice was heard. Whether that may have resulted in hardcore consequences or not they still took a stand. Joining us on this episode is Joshua Baker to talk about what this means to him as a young Black student-athlete.

“How did an American family end up in the heart of the ISIS caliphate?”Samantha Elhassani (nee Sally) insists, “I'm not a bad person — I'm not a monster”.Yet she lived in the ISIS caliphate. Her ten-year-old son could make a suicide belt and be featured in ISIS propaganda. She owned slaves. And travelled to Hong Kong to deposit large sums of cash and gold and bought tactical combat gear there. And perhaps most astonishing, she was an FBI informant. The story sounds unbelievable and Samantha says so herself. However, in 2018 she returned to the US into the custody of law enforcement. At the end of 2020, she was convicted of financing terrorism and sentenced to prison for 78 months.Investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker Joshua Baker untangles Samantha's story in the podcast In I'm Not A Monster and the film Return from ISIS. Jointly produced by the BBC and PBS, the podcast and film examine how an American woman and her children could possibly end up with ISIS in Syria. Joshua Baker brings listeners to places both frightening and familiar, from a former torture prison to a children's swing set in the backyard of a home in Indiana. In this episode of MetaPod, we talk to Joshua Baker about his mission to chronicle Samantha's unique story. Josh discusses his journalistic career working in high-risk conflict zones and with vulnerable people. We also discuss the political and cultural understanding between countries of the Middle East and the West. Please be advised that some of our discussion revolves around violence, coercion and other topics that might be unsettling for some audiences.
In this conversation, I connected with Dhiraj Mukherjee who is co-founder of Shazam - the music recognition app that was founded during the end of the dot-com bubble in 2000 and they surfed multiple crises before finally being acquired 18 years later by Apple for a reported $400 million. He is now an active angel investor focused on Tech for Good, and with a particular interest in the climate emergency. I first met and worked with Dhiraj 7 years ago and we reconnected recently when he posted an interesting blog post called Designing for Uncertainty about the importance of agility in finding opportunities for innovation when faced with a crisis, such as the current pandemic. We talked about having random conversations (through being a dog owner), spotting when you are in the right place or knowing when you are in a dead end, and the importance of patience and the long view when it comes to innovation and navigating a crisis. Joshua Baker is simply one of the most impressive journalists out there working today. You may know him for his current podcast series with the BBC, I’m Not a Monster, or his related documentary Return from ISIS. The two follow his attempts to track down and understand Samantha, the woman who took her family to live with ISIS in Syria. If you’ve not yet listened to I’m Not a Monster, do give it a go, it’s incredible from the start. Listening to the first episode, I was walking in the snow in Berlin and it was -15C, and I stayed out longer in such extreme conditions, so I could reach the end of the first episode, that’s how riveting it is. Joshua Links I'm not a Monster Podcast: https://podfollow.com/1540251892 https://www.instagram.com/joshbakerfilm https://www.twitter.com/joshbakerfilm Andrew Links http://twitter.com/andrewgold_ok http://instagram.com/andrewgold_ok http://youtube.com/andrewgold1 http://patreon.com/andrewgold http://andrewgoldpodcast.com It begins by explaining minute by minute what it was like for Joshua to be attacked and bombed by ISIS, fracturing his back in an explosion that destroyed that left nothing of an entire street. Then, we hear audio footage of a young American boy being taught to assemble and use a suicide bomb. The kid explains how he would lure American soldiers by asking for help, before pulling the string. Now, I didn’t want to go into too much detail, because I want you to be able to listen to this full podcast without real spoilers, and to be able to then fully enjoy I’m Not a Monster afterwards. I was fascinated by Joshua from a journalistic point of view, because the one thing I always said was that I’ll do anything, and I’ve done stuff over the years in dangerous places – but I would never go near ISIS or anyone who might behead me. It’s just not worth the gain, so we talk a lot in this one about his experience literally being blown up by ISIS and surviving by the skin of his teeth – and then what it means to be doing this kind of journalism. That said, we do talk a bit towards end about the characters in the series, so I’ll give you a little run down without any spoilers, all stuff you know from the beginning of episode one. Sam is an American mother who took her kids to Syria, and wants to come back. She claims she was tricked into going there by her husband Moussa, but Joshua doesn’t entirely trust her, as her story doesn’t always check out. Joshua does track down a woman called Tsuad who was bought as a slave by Sam and Moussa during their time in Syria – and Tsuad speaks nicely about Sam, so I ask Joshua about that at the end. There is about nine minutes of bonus chat in this episode for patrons – get that on patreon.com/andrewgold. I’ll try to get Josh to come to my weekly Discord chat room event, they’ve been great so far – just find the link in the show notes.
