Richard Hermer was one of the surprise announcements from Keir Starmer's first Cabinet, and one of the most contravercial since. Starmer's old pal came with some notable baggage: his former clients include Sri Lankan refugees to the Chagos Islands and ex-Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams, as well as British-Bangladeshi Isis bride Shamima Begum. In government, Hermer has played a key role in several contentious decisions, such as the government's withdrawal of the UK's objections to the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu, and his involvement in the Chagos Islands deal. And today he admitted that he has had to recuse himself ‘from certain matters' due to potential conflicts of interest. Is the government hamstrung by Hermer? James Heale speaks to Katy Balls and Rajiv Shah, former special adviser to the Attorney General and legal adviser to Number 10. Produced by Oscar Edmondson.

In this episode, Matthew talks to Dr Jennifer Fleetwood about her book 'What we talk about when we talk about crime'. The book examines seven infamous crime stories to make sense of this modern confessional impulse, including Howard Marks's outlandish autobiography Mr Nice, Shamima Begum's controversial Times interview, Prince Andrew's disastrous Newsnight appearance and Myra Hindley's unpublished prison letters.Jennifer explores the multitude of factors (such as gender, class, race) that shape how stories are told and heard and expplains how difficult it can be for the 'truth' to come out as she invites us to think differently about the abundance of personal stories about crime that circulate in public life. You can purchase the book at Waterstones: https://www.waterstones.com/book/what-we-talk-about-when-we-talk-about-crime/jennifer-fleetwood/9781912559534Or, if you join the publisher's mailing list you can get 20% off here: https://www.nottinghilleditions.com/product/what-we-talk-about-when-we-talk-about-crime/You can book online Sociology tuition here here -https://calendly.com/sociologyshowtutoring

In 2015, a 15-year-old East London girl left for Syria with two of her friends to live in the so-called Caliphate. After Shamima Begum was captured in a refugee camp in 2019, the British public was enraged by her attitude that she'd done nothing wrong and for downplaying the violence committed by ISIS.Journalist Josh Baker traveled to Syria to interview the evasive prisoner, then retraced her steps to fact check her story - that she went to the Caliphate to practice fundamentalism, not to become an ISIS soldier. BBC Sounds and Radio 5 Live present season two of “I'm Not a Monster: The Shamima Begum Story.” Josh Baker explores war ravaged Syria to discover the network which smuggled her into ISIS territory, examine her life as a soldier's bride in the Caliphate, and confirm whether or not the British teen was an active combatant against Coalition forces. Seeking to separate fact from fiction, the multi award-winning series returns to investigate the divisive story of Shamima Begum. When three London school girls went missing in 2015, they generated global headlines and the media storm that ensued continues to this day. Back then, investigative journalist Josh Baker was filming at a mosque in the girls' neighbourhood as their families came to seek help; their daughters were on the way to Syria to join the Islamic State group. But it was too late, and they disappeared inside the so-called caliphate. For four years, their fate remained a mystery - with only occasional glimpses and sometimes conflicting reports of what they were doing with the terror group being made public.
