We're going deep inside last year's momentous progressive victory in the battle for control of the Wisconsin Supreme Court on this week's episode of "The Downballot," where we're joined by Alejandro Verdin, who managed Judge Janet Protasiewicz's triumphant campaign. Verdin explains how he assembled a team that took the little-known Protasiewicz from third place in the polls to a runaway first-place finish in the primary and then on to a landslide win in the general election.Verdin tells us why Protasiewicz broke with the staid traditions of campaigning for judicial office and was so outspoken on the issues that voters cared about—particularly gerrymandering and abortion. Plus: the never-before-revealed easter egg trolling their conservative opponent that the campaign inserted into their ads.Co-hosts David Nir and David Beard also recap Tuesday's elections in New Hampshire—no, not those elections. We're talking about two special elections for the state House, of course! Then it's on to Louisiana, where the Davids explain how the state's unique all-party primaries will come to a (partial) end, and how a Republican congressman might get revenge on his party for making him walk the plank in redistricting.Transcript to come.

It wasn't long ago that Wisconsin Supreme Court elections were snoozers with low voter turnout. After a raucous decade in Wisconsin politics, that era is over. Judge Janet Protasiewicz won the statewide office this spring in the most expensive judicial race in U.S. history. With lawsuits about ballot drop boxes, the state's political maps and abortion already winding through the courts, big questions over political power, voting rights and liberty are at stake. Now that Judge Janet is on the bench, what can we expect from the new court? Dylan Brogan caught up with UW-Madison Political Science Professor Howard Schweber, who says that recent moves by the U.S. Supreme Court have made our state court even more important.   Wanna talk to us about an episode? There are a lot of expectations about what a new liberal-majority Supreme Court will mean for Wisconsin. But not everyone is expecting change right away. Judge Janet Protasiewicz took her oath of office Tuesday, and with that Wisconsin's Supreme Court flips from a 4-3 conservative court to a 4-3 liberal court. Fellow Supreme Court Justice Brian Hagedorn, who is often the conservative-leaning swing vote, said on UPFRONT on Milwaukee TV over the weekend that Protasiewicz's arrival will not radically change the court in the short term. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wisconsininfocus/support

Meanwhile former Justice Daniel Kelly's campaign only has about 3,800 donations of less than $50, yet his billionaire backers have given him an overall spending edge in the race. A story reported by DeFour and Wisconsin Watch's Matt Mencarini. DeFour's package outlines how the court has become increasingly fractured in the past 20 years, even among justices who agree on the outcome of a case. That leaves an opening for a liberal majority — if Judge Janet Protasiewicz wins — to revisit previous cases. In the second story, DeFour and Mencarini explain the cases that liberals and conservatives say illustrates the “judicial activism” that both sides routinely rail against. It's Dish! The shorter (sometimes?!) version of Toxic where we rant about the newsy stuff that's chock-full of toxicity. Two weeks ago, the U.S. was collectively traumatized by its 131st mass shooting that took the lives of three kids and three adults, and yet all Tennessee did in response was a.) ask people to pray away the murderous rampages and b.) fire three heroic Representatives who said this situation f'ing sucks. Great job, everyone. Later, we talk about one bit of good news, Wisconsin's election of Judge Janet Protasiewicz—whose last name we can't pronounce to save our lives, many apologies—to the state supreme court and the things she will hopefully be able to do to secure women's rights to bodily autonomy. There's lots of bad, a little good and a Zombie Jesus holiday upon us. After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year, a 19th century abortion ban took effect in Wisconsin and forced those practicing and seeking reproductive healthcare to travel across state lines. Earlier this week, voters elected Judge Janet Protasiewicz to become a justice on Wisconsin's Supreme Court, flipping control of the court to liberals for the first time in 15 years. That could have big implications on the future of abortion in the state. NPR's Mary Louise Kelly speaks with Dr. Kristen Lyerly, an OB-GYN from Green Bay, Wisconsin, about how the judicial change could impact Wisconsin doctors who provide reproductive healthcare and their patients. WISCONSIN BEFORE LIGHTENING STRIKES; ANTI-TRANS WARFARE Our GREE-GREE #132 foreshadows the major victory in Wisconsin's critical state Supreme Court race that is being widely ranked as “the most important election of 2023.” We hear from ANDREA MILLER of the Center for Common Ground, NORM STOCKWELL of Progressive.org, and THOMAS NELSON of grassroots Wisconsin on the coming of what would be a huge victory for the Progressive movement. We know as you're listening to this that the left-leaning “Judge Janet” Protasiewicz won this crucial judgeship by a substantial margin.  She beat a MAGA Republican. So if you want to know how this happened, listen in to the powerful views of a critically important trio of organizer/activists who helped make this progressive victory happened. We then turn to BRYNN TANNEHILL and her uniquely brilliant systemic presentation on the national assault against the rights and freedoms of trans Americans. Among much more, Brynn tells us that “gun rights” stalwarts who NEVER want to limit gun ownership now want to make it illegal for trans citizens to own a gun. [IN OUR SECOND HOUR, FOR NEXT WEEK: PRESIDENT MICHELLE?  A ROMERO ADMINISTRATION?  LIVING EARTH MOVEMENT; MORE NUKE MADNESS In our latest GREE-GREE gathering, we're joined by legendary journalist/producer DAVID SALTMAN, presents the possibility of MICHELLE OBAMA running for President. Though there are obvious doubts, Saltman reads a long passage from the former First Lady that would seem to indicate she'd be open to the idea should Joe Biden decline to re-run Along the way we hear from LYNN FEINERMAN, JUSTIN LEBLANC and others. TATANKA BRICCA lays out the Romero Institute's on-going campaign to establish a full-blown government leadership apparatus, prepared to take and use power as the corporate Democrats and Trumpite Republicans fade away.   IGNACIO CASTUERA of the Living Earth Movement explains his organization's powerful campaign to insure that we get to world peace.  The movement focuses in particularly on guaranteeing detente with China, thus avoiding a war between the world's two biggest economies. Finally the brilliant  LINDA PENCE GUNTER of Beyond Nuclear confirms that Germany will, in fact, shut its last reactors around April 15. Thus the world's fourth-largest economy goes post-nuclear, with (hopefully) the fifth-largest (California) soon to follow. Linda also fills us in on the uselessness of Silly Mythic Reactors, and the on-going dangers at Ukraine's besieged Zaporigia. We also hear about the use of Depleted Uranium (DU), armor-penetrating shells that spread lethal atomic radiation throughout the landscape. Linda is joined by MYLA RESON who further explains the dangers of DU and atomic waste. This wide-ranging excursion should not be missed.  NO NUKES!!

It's Thursday, April 6th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark First Muslim leads Scotland Last Wednesday, Humza Yousaf was sworn in as Scotland's new leader. According to Reuters, he is the first Muslim to head a democratic western European government.  However, Yousaf is committed to leftist social values like protecting sexually perverted lifestyles and decriminalizing the murder of unborn babies. He also pledged support for a ban on conversion therapy that the Scottish legislators said they will bring forward this year. Conversion therapy involves helping someone change their so-called sexual orientation or gender identity after they request help to do so. In response, a coalition of 20 church leaders sent a letter to the legislature. They wrote that a ban “would go far beyond outlawing abuse and coercion; instead, it would criminalize ordinary Christians and church leaders for expressing mainstream, orthodox belief.” Trump's speech after New York arraignment On Tuesday night, after former president Donald Trump's arraignment in New York City on 34 felony counts, he flew back to Palm Beach, Florida where he delivered a 30-minute speech to supporters from Mar-a-Lago,  reports The Epoch Times. TRUMP: “I never thought anything like this could happen in America. The only crime that I have committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it. (applause) “From the beginning, the Democrats spied on my campaign. Remember that? They attacked me with an onslaught of fraudulent investigations.  Russia, Russia, Russia. Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine. Impeachment hoax #1. Impeachment hoax #2. The illegal and unconstitutional raid on Mar-a-Lago, right here. (crowd boos) “The lying to the [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act] courts. The FBI and DOJ relentlessly pursuing Republicans. The unconstitutional changes to election laws by not getting approvals from state legislators. The millions of votes illegally stuffed into ballot boxes, and all caught on government cameras. And, just recently, the FBI and DOJ, in collusion with Twitter and Facebook, in order not to say anything bad about the Hunter Biden laptop, which exposes the Biden family as criminals in which according to the pollsters would have made a 17-point difference in the election result. And we needed a lot less than that!” Mental issues precede gender transition of white female girls Researchers from Northwestern University released a study last week about people pretending to be the opposite sex. It was based on parental reports on 1,500 children who have experienced gender confusion. The study found girls of European descent represented the vast majority of cases. The average age when a case began was 14.8 years. Most parents of girls with gender confusion said their daughter had a mental health history. On average, mental health issues surfaced 3.8 years before gender confusion began. Most parents also reported experiencing pressure from a “gender clinic or specialist” to “transition” their child.  In Mark 10:6, Jesus said, “But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.'” After bullying, North Carolina Democrat becomes Republican A North Carolina state representative announced yesterday that she is leaving the Democratic Party and becoming a Republican. The move gives the GOP veto-proof control in the state legislature.  Rep. Tricia Cotham said she and her family have been bullied and attacked by Democrats for her attempts to work across the aisle. Listen to her share what the deal breaker was for her. COTHAM: “One of the absolute worst moments, which was a deal breaker, a turning point for me, was when I was criticized for using the American flag and the praying hands emoji on all my social media platforms, and even on the back of different vehicles that I have. I really could not believe that was the conversation that was happening at that time. And I was deeply offended. I am proud to be an American. I am proud of our country. I'm proud of the men and women in my family who have served.” Pro-abortion judge beat pro-life judge for Wisconsin Supreme Court Pro-abortion Judge Janet Protasiewicz beat pro-life candidate Dan Kelly in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election on Tuesday.  The pro-death judge will replace a conservative justice who is retiring, swinging the court to a 4-to-3 liberal majority. The court is likely to hear a case soon challenging a state law protecting the unborn.  Protasiewicz outspent Kelly in what was the most expensive state Supreme Court race in U.S. history. The total came out to over $42 million spent, according to the nonprofit Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. COVID pandemic heightened loneliness The response to the COVID-19 pandemic had an effect on loneliness in America. A study by Gallup found that 17% of adults experience daily loneliness as of February, down from 25% during pandemic shutdowns. The report also found people were more likely to report daily loneliness if they lived in big cities and were single. The study correlated the two findings. It revealed “that those who live in the most sparsely populated areas are also the least likely to feel loneliness. … Higher percentages of rural populations [are] married [with] children at home than what is found in urban environments.” Weekly religious attendance down since COVID And finally, a new study from Pew Research looked at the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on religious attendance in America. The percentage of those who attended services in person took a hit at the start of the pandemic dropping to 13%. It's back up to 28% but has plateaued. Live-streaming services have decreased from 36% to 24% now. And the percentage of those who say they participate in services virtually or in person has remained steady at about 40%. Overall, religious attendance declined slightly since the pandemic. In 2019, 33% of adults said they attended religious services at least monthly. That number is down to 30% now. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “Let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, April 6th in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. If the state's badly gerrymandered voting districts can be dismantled and a proper representative state assembly be elected in this almost 50/50 state, it could impact reproductive rights, gun legislation, voting rights and other important issues. In 2011, led by Governor Scott Walker & the national Red Map Project, Wisconsin's legislature gerrymandered state assembly, senate and Congressional maps.  Despite receiving less than 50% of the vote, the 2011 maps engineered a 60 to 39 advantage in the State Assembly, and retained control of the State Senate in 2012. The further gerrymandered 2021 maps resulted in a 64-35 advantage in 2022.  Who upheld the 2021 map previously vetoed by Governor Tony Evers?   The Wisconsin Supreme Court. It's not clear whether the Protasiewicz win will have an immediate impact on fair redistricting, or if it will have to wait until 2031.   We have links to articles, and groups taking action at AmericanDemocracyMinute.org.  I'm Brian Beihl. Please follow us on Facebook and Twitter and SHARE!  Find all of our reports at AmericanDemocracyMinute.org#Democracy  #DemocracyNews

Despite its short term success, did the messages set Democrats up for failure by reinforcing right-wing values on public safety, and damaging the multiracial progressive coalition needed to address mass incarceration and structural racism in the criminal justice system? We also call attention to the important reelection race of Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich, and call on progressives to get off the sidelines and volunteer in the general election.  Next, we discuss Sen. We discuss Citizen Action's duel endorsement of Judge Janet Protasiewicz and Judge Everett Mitchell as we head towards the critical February 21st Supreme Court Primary Election. After debriefing Governor Evers' State of the State speech and the Republicans' cynical response, we welcome back our in-house economist Dr. Micheal Rosen to discuss Republicans' scheme to create a phony “debt crisis” and what President Biden and Democrats need to do to win the fight.
