This week we dig into the federal and state budget battles, and the question of a 3rd term for Governor Tony Evers, with special guests Dan Shafer of the Recombobulation Area and Civic Media, and Steven Webb from Planned Parenthood. We open with a discussion of the critical importance of Juneteenth this year, as DEI is under attack by the Trump Administration, and some cities and businesses pull back from supporting local celebrations. Robert provides a simple explanation of how the new U.S. Senate budget bill is even worse on Medicaid than the House budget bill, and it particularly damages rural hospitals. We update listeners on the latest State Budget news, including Speaker Vos' continuing crusade to force Governor Evers' hand with slashing cuts to UW System funding. The plot thickens because Senate Republicans can't pass a budget without UW cuts or they will lose the most right-wing members of their caucus, Senators Kapanga & Nass. In addition, to serious tactical disagreements with the governor on how to win his state budget priorities the public supports by huge margins, like properly funding public schools, expanding BadgerCare, funding child care and closing Green Bay, their is now a serious discussion about whether it is time for Governor Evers to lead by a timely passing of the torch to the next generation of Democratic leaders and not running for Governor in 2026. We welcome award winning Milwaukee area journalist, Dan Shafer, founder of The Recombobulation Area and now part of the Civic Media network, who makes the case that it's time to pass the Torch and Tony Evers should not run for a third term as governor. He argues Wisconsin's governor needs to do what so many other Democrats have failed to do and step aside when the time is right. We close the show with Citizen Action board member, Steven Webb, who is the executive director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin, to discuss the devastating cuts to healthcare in the federal Budget bills that will damage Planned Parenthood's ability to provide vital frontline healthcare to Wisconsinites. Steve tells us how you can also get involved in organizing with PPAWI to fight back.
Governor Evers thought he'd play a game of chicken with the legislature over school funding, and last week, he lost big time. Unfortunately, Evers wagered your property taxes. When he pulled that line-item-veto stunt last session, Evers enabled school districts to increase their revenue limits by $325 per student every year for the next 400 years. That comes out to about a quarter of a billion dollars each year with the state's current student population. School districts can get that extra money through one of two ways: more state aid or higher property taxes. Evers thought it was a safe bet that lawmakers would increase state aid, so that most taxpayers would never have a clue about his unprecedented power grab and his absurd 400-year-line-item veto. Instead, the legislature took a pass and left Evers holding the bag. So now when you get that higher property tax bill this December, be sure to thank gov. Tony Evers.
Partly cloudy with a high of 80° today! Looking like some more rain moving into the area tomorrow afternoon/evening. We let you know what's new on New Release Tuesday this morning and we spoke with our buddy, Grant Bilse, of the Wisco Sports show! In the news this morning, a registered sex offender in Prairie du Chien was arrested after luring a 14 year-old girl into a van, Governor Evers declared June 16th as "Kwik Trip Day" in Wisconsin to celebrate their anniversary, the MyPillow guy was found guilty of defamation, an update on the Vance Boelter story, and Trump warns the citizens of Tehran to get out while they still can. In sports, the Brewers start a 3-game series in Chicago tonight against the Cubs, the Thunder beat the Pacers last night to take a 3-2 series lead in the NBA finals, the NHL Stanley Cup Final continues tonight with game six from Florida, there was a no-hitter in the College World Series yesterday, Team USA announced it's first six hockey players for the 2026 Winter Olympics, and the Kings' Anze Kopitar won the Lady Byng trophy! Elsewhere in sports, a singer decided to perform the National Anthem in Spanish before a recent Dodgers game, and Joey Chestnut is officially coming back for the 4th of July hot dog eating competition! Great video of an elephant saving a gazelle that was drowning, and check out this really old tortoise who just celebrated his first Father's Day! Another heart-warming story out of Texas as a principal hand-wrote personalized letters to all 443 of his graduating students! Had a couple of work-related stories this morning, including the results of a study about working 50 or more hours a week & the impact on your brain, the younger generation is trying to normalize in-office sex, and the Top 10 daily interactions that make us sick of people! And if you're really sick of people and want to live a lonely life in your old age, it might help you live longer! In today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy who called the cops on his neighbors over 3,000 times this year, a turkey soaked in tequila that nearly burned down an apartment in Madison, and a #FloridaWoman who was petting a gator!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On Wednesday's Dan O'Donnell, Dan pays tribute to the late Brian Wilson while covering the apparent coup against Governor Evers ahead of the state's Democratic convention.
We take a deep dive into the huge breaking news that Speaker Robin Vos and Republican leaders walked away from state budget negotiations with Governor Tony Evers on Wednesday. Ratcheting up the battle, Republicans taunted the Governor by predicting he would sign a partisan budget that under funds his priorities. We talk about how this decision provides a new opportunity for Evers to re-engage the public about what is at stake in the budget battle and how their engagement in the fight is critical to winning on key public priorities. We and our allies continue to encourage people to call Governor Evers (1-608-266-1212) and urge him to veto any state budget that fails to meet key public priorities: properly funded public schools, expand BadgerCare, fund child care, and no new prisons. Contact your State Legislators today and tell them to reject any state budget that fails to meet these minimum standards. We review a new UW-Extension study finding rising housing costs are prompting many to forgo or delay medical care, and we discuss the significant implications of these findings. We close with an update on the federal budget battle where Senator Ron Johnson has positioned himself on center stage in the developing budget drama. Johnson, who recently called Medicaid recipients “grifters,” publicly opposes the House budget because it does not cut enough from Medicaid, SNAP, and other critical public programs.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires is making the air in Southern Wisconsin some of the worst in the nation. Republicans in the state legislature and Governor Evers have called off negotiations on the state budget. And, for the first time ever, Milwaukee's Pride Parade will have a professional athlete as its Grand Marshal.
The Wisconsin budget process has been no walk in the park (A park the GOP would defund in this budget) and it seems as if the Wisconsin GOP and Governor Evers are at a standoff. Then, Civic Media's very own Jim Santelle joins the show to cover the latest news coming out of the law world. It looks like The Felon President is mad at The Federalist Society because...they're too liberal? And we revisit the Wisconsin GOP who looks to pass a law which harkens back to an election that was neither stolen or unsafe. On Wednesday's Dan O'Donnell Show, Dan reports a big exclusive story: Governor Evers' powerful chief of staff, joined by two Democrats in the Wisconsin Legislature, bullied, intimidated, and threatened to pull funding from the Wisconsin Historical Society because it didn't fly a pride flag this year.
It's Friday, and the weekend starts here. Wisconsin Congressman Tom Tiffany has so semi-harsh and not so tough words for Governor Evers. And we have an update on the wonderful MAHA report issued yesterday. It's always a pleasure to have Representative Mark Pocan on the show and we will be speaking with him about his conversation with The Secretary of Health And Human Services, as well as all the news on the Big Beautiful Blob and the reps from Wisconsin who are for, and against it. Governor Evers joins WisconsinEye's Newsmakers on May 20, 2025, to answer all of these […]

Ah -- Romance is in the air. And by romance in the air – we mean Governors giving their annual state of the state addresses and budget speeches in front of state legislatures. Like Tony Evers. Here's what the Wisconsin Governor said during his 2025 state of the state address: “My forever prom date, Kathy, is up in the gallery, as well. Kathleen Frances, you are the cream to fill my cream puff.” In the next episode of C-SPAN's podcast “The Weekly” – we hear more governors say more lovely things about their spouses – just like Governor Evers did. • How long has Kathleen Frances Evers been the cream to fill Governor Tony Evers' cream puff? • Which Governor revealed a – shhhh -- bedroom secret? • And which Governor not only said something lovely about her husband – but then said something lovely about her in-laws? Find out in “The Weekly” – as we present the loveliest things governors said about their spouses in 2025 State of the State addresses. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
At the top we celebrate the decades of permanent community organizing of Voces de la Frontera that makes May Day so powerful in Milwaukee and Wisconsin. This annual celebration of multiracial democracy has helped prepare us to meet the moment in these times of Trump. Next, we update the latest in the fight to protect Medicaid from slashing cuts to pay for tax giveaways to the rich, including a new report demonstrating how cuts to Medicaid would harm patients and increase health costs in Wisconsin. Robert gives a report on this week's final JFC public hearings on the state budget and we preview the next steps in the process. We continue to encourage Governor Evers to use his powerful veto to win concessions on properly funding public schools and expanding Medicaid. We hope many of our listeners will join our upcoming Capitol Lobby Day, May 27th to support our state budget organizing. Robert closes with a run down of this week' worst Trump fallout, including: Wisconsin joining a lawsuit on Trump's unilateral cancellation of Americorps; the arrest of Judge Hannah Dugan and its aftermath, putting Wisconsin at center of immigration fight.

Robert Kraig begins the program with observations on Donald Trump's assault on democratic institutions . Some major institutions, such as elite universities, major law firms, and corporate media companies, have tried to cut deals while others have stood their ground. Those that have capitulated have found that giving in only results in more outrageous demands. On the Battleground Wisconsin Podcast this week our theme is the moral imperative to stand and fight at both the national and state level. First, Robert interviews Heather DuBois Bourenane, Executive Director of Wisconsin Public Education Network (WPEN) to discuss the battle for education funding in the state budget. In their discussion, Heather and Robert conclude that the only way to get sufficient school funding and to win BadgerCare Expansion is for Governor Evers to use his veto power to stand and fight. Next, Robert interviews Citizen Action Healthcare Action Coordinator Timothy Faust on the battles for postpartum care, BadgerCare Expansion, and proposed massive cuts to Medicaid to fund tax cuts for the wealthy.

On Monday's "Dan O'Donnell Show," Dan breaks a major exclusive story: Governor Evers' Department of Administration sent out a memo this morning ordering all state employees not to assist ICE investigations. Plus, thoughts and reflections on the passing of Pope Francis.
On a special Good Friday edition of "The Dan O'Donnell Show," Dan breaks down the Wisconsin Supreme Court's horrible ruling on Governor Evers' 400-year veto and gets deep and spiritual with Milwaukee Archbishop Jeffrey Grob and in his powerful audio essay "The God of the Galaxies."
We began today's Morning Show with Tyler August, Wisconsin State Representative for the 31st Assembly District (in Walworth County) and the current Majority Leader for the State Assembly. Our interview includes a conversation about Governor Evers's proposed state budget and the republicans' response to it.
Governor Evers, in an effort to raise money for road repairs is proposing a one-time fee increase for car purchases. Then we give you an update on "Gold Bar" Bob Menendez, former Senator from New Jersey and he's making an appeal to a very likely character. Can Congress get away with taking away health care from millions to fund huge tax cuts for the rich? We preview Medicaid Town Halls in Wausau, La Crosse and Eau Claire that will help organize resistance to proposed slashing cuts to Medicaid. Meanwhile, Rep. Van Orden continued to hunker down in his basement bunker, holding a virtual town hall where he can avoid answering tough questions after misleading his own constituents about Medicaid cuts he rubber stamped in Congress. We cannot win by surrendering in advance. We continue to encourage Governor Evers to veto any budget the Legislature produces that fails to expand BadgerCare. The Spring Election is around the corner and Brad Schimel rehashes voter fraud conspiracies about Milwaukee that he knows are false. So much for his phony stance as a high minded judge above politics. This week the only debate in the State Superintendent of DPI election was held by WPEN and other allies. This race remains about Jill Underly's dedicated support for improving and properly funding our public schools vs. her opponent who is a supporter of siphoning even more money to private unaccountable voucher schools. Robert educates us on a legal case against Greenpeace who was found liable for $645 million for Dakota Access Pipeline protests that has huge implications for the Constitutional right of free speech and protest. Will this be the beginning of a legal strategy to bankrupt progressive nonprofits to silence free speech and assembly? We close with a soul-searching discussion with James Causey, a longtime columnist with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, on adults forcing police officers back into Milwaukee Public Schools without ever listening to the kids.
District 3 Aldermanic candidate Alex Brower joins us for an in depth analysis of Governor Evers' Act 12 bill and its impact on Milwaukee. Dan breaks a MASSIVE story: The Wisconsin Legislature is being advised not to pass a state budget this year over fears of how the State Supreme Court will rule on Governor Evers' expansive partial veto authority.
This week Citizen Action hosted a major news conference at the State Capitol with Legislative allies and Citizen Action members from around the state to unveil the Climate Accountability Act. The bill, which is already rapidly winning co-sponsors, requires the Legislature to pass a concrete and enforceable plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. Following the media event, Citizen Action members fanned out across the Capitol to visit their Representatives and State Senators and discuss state budget priorities, like expanding BadgerCare. We unpack the latest MU Law Poll which shows a clear pathway for key priorities in Governor Evers' state budget, if he is willing to use his stronger public popularity against a very unpopular Republican Legislature. We review the lessons learned from the first two weeks of phone calls at Citizen Action talking directly to Spring Election voters. We also discuss the most important developments in Donald Trump”s assault on the constitutional order, including a critical 5-4 Supreme Court ruling this week that sided against President Trump over $2B in frozen foreign aid and his unhinged prime time address to a joint session of Congress.
The Coalition for Lead-Free Water is meeting with Earl to address the ongoing lead contamination issues impacting the water supply in schools and communities where our children reside. Robert Miranda, Paul Schwartz, and Dr. Yonna Lambrinidou provide the latest updates on lead testing conducted at many educational institutions, emphasizing Governor Evers' comments on the situation. Earlier this week, the state was anticipated to release crucial documents outlining the detrimental effects of lead-contaminated drinking water on our children's health. Lead exposure presents significant risks, associated with a range of health problems, both minor and severe. Families already facing financial difficulties are struggling to maintain stable housing, and now they must also navigate the challenge of ensuring access to safe drinking and bathing water. Welcome back to reality! Hope everyone had a good weekend. Enjoy the weather today & tomorrow, but look out for some snow on Wednesday. In the news this morning, updates on the Pope & Gene Hackman, Governor Evers is looking to increase the cost of hunting & fishing licenses, President Trump signed an executive order making English the official language of America, and Zelensky says that Ukraine is still ready to sign the minerals deal with the US after his meeting with Trump over the weekend. In sports, the Bucks got a win against Dallas over the weekend, the Badgers lost to Michigan State yesterday, Alexander Ovechkin scored his 884th career goal to pull with 10 of Wayne Gretzky, and John Cena FINALLY turned heel. Elsewhere in sports, Pete Rose might get posthumously reinstated by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, while President Trump is planning on pardoning the hit king. Also, Chris Kluwe apparently got fired from his job as a football coach at a high school in California after his recent comments about MAGA at a city council meeting. We let you know what's on TV tonight and recapped last night's Oscars. And 2nd Floor Sarah stopped by to talk about what's happening in our area this week. Had a great story about a school bus driver near Cleveland who saved 15 kids on the bus after it started on fire! Apparently, #Science has developed a new kind of banana that will stay fresh up to 12 hours after you've removed it's peel. And we took a look at a list of the unhealthiest foods. It's pretty much anything delicious. A brawl broke out between parents at a cheerleading competition in Texas, and in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we talked about this past weekend's #FloridaMan games, had a story about a woman who broke into an animal shelter and released over a dozen dogs, and speaking of dogs….here's a puppy that was saved by a vet after it ate a plethora of items from around the house. Also in "Bad News with Happy Music", a wild video of some window washers getting tossed around in their rig, and man was arrested after offering free glasses in exchange for sexual favors to multiple customers. The Republican speaker of the Wisconsin Assembly is criticizing the prison overhaul proposed by Governor Evers. Enrollment at Milwaukee Area Technical College is almost back to pre-pandemic levels. And, some Wisconsinites can get their taxes done for free. We'll have the details on how and where.
On Tuesday's "Dan O'Donnell Show," Dan breaks a pair of big local stories and finally gets reaction from Governor Evers on his attempts to replace the word "moter" with "inseminated person" in state law.
On Monday's "Dan O'Donnell Show," Dan makes a big announcement and reports exclusively on Governor Evers shredding the separation of powers in Wisconsin and launching the constitutional crisis liberals pretend America is in under President Trump.
We speak with State Representative Robert Wittke, who represents the 63rd assembly district (which includes most of Caledonia and most of Franklin.) Our conversation includes his reflection on Governor Evers's proposed biennial budget.
Back from the weekend, the weather is fine…and my truck needs a wash. In the news this morning, an update on the condition of the Pope, President Trump names Dan Bongino as the FBI deputy director, the jersey patch honoring Bob Uecker is now available at Brewers team stores, Governor Evers wants us to refer to a mother as an "inseminated person" now, and federal employees are being told to prove their work. In sports, the Badgers lost to unranked Oregon on Saturday, the Bucks have now won four in a row, Alexander Ovechkin got a hat trick & is now just 13 goals away from passing Wayne Gretzky, and Christopher Bell got the win in Atlanta yesterday. Elsewhere in sports, a touching moment for the Gaudreau family over the weekend, and a chess champion is auctioning off his jeans for charity. Great story about a woman who donated her kidney to her prom date…35 years later! And a couple of hikers were saved by a backpack they found in the woods that contained supplies. Mary welcomes Julaine Appling back to the podcast to talk about citizenry at the local level. With a plethora of headlines of late related to a federal swamp draining of immense proportions, what is going on in the states? While we focus a lot on Wisconsin in these programs, many states have or will have to deal with similar issues. Today we look at how Governor Evers continues to change the landscape here with his attempts to move away from a representative form of government, something every blue state citizen should be concerned about. Then we look at "baby boxes" and this much-needed pro-life move to protect newborns. Also on the docket, "demographic winter" - what it means when a generation chooses pursuit of self to the exclusion of raising the next generation. Finally, a look at 2025 elections, because, those annoying ads are back already! Julaine serves Wisconsin Family Council as president emeritus. Wisconsin Family Council, organized in 1986, is the only organization in Wisconsin dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the natural family. Happy National Marriage Week! We announce Citizen Action's endorsement of Jill Underly's re-election as Superintendent of Public Instruction. There is a primary election next Tuesday, February 18th. Please make sure you vote. Next Tuesday evening Governor Tony Evers will give his budget address speech commencing the legislative portion of the state budget process which will play out over the next few months. We preview our call for Governor Evers to veto any state budget that doesn't include better public school funding, accepting the federal Medicaid money for BadgerCare. He should also veto any budget that builds new state prisons. We are partnering with Wisconsin Public Education Network and WISDOM in this organizing campaign and urge all our listeners to call Governor Evers office next week and urge him to fight for these public priorities. As we head into a critical State Supreme Court election, Justice Janet Protasiewicz announces she will not recuse herself in the upcoming Act 10 case. We comment on the “Our billionaire is better than your billionaire” election funding of our major elections. We note the overwhelming bi-partisan support in a state Senate Committee this week for an expansion of Medicaid Postpartum Care, which Speaker Robin Vos continues to block. We urge our listeners to call their state representatives and urge them to push for a vote. We close with the many low lights of the 4th week of Trump Regime 2.0, including more clarity on Trump and the Congressional Republicans' plans to gut federal Medicaid funding, denying healthcare for millions of Americans.
