Rep Mike Lawler: Americans want action on critical issues like taxes, energy and the border
The Hoover Institution Program on the US, China, and the World held Critical Issues in the US-China Science and Technology Relationship on Thursday, November 7th, 2024 from 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm PT at the Annenberg Conference Room, George P. Shultz Building. Both the United States and the People's Republic of China see sustaining leadership in science and technology (S+T) as foundational to national and economic security. Policymakers on both sides of the Pacific have taken action to promote indigenous innovation, and to protect S+T ecosystems from misappropriation of research and malign technology transfer. In the US, some of these steps, including the China Initiative, have led to pain, mistrust, and a climate of fear, particularly for students and scholars of and from China. Newer efforts, including research security programs and policies, seek to learn from these mistakes. A distinguished panel of scientists and China scholars discuss these dynamics and their implications. What are the issues facing US-China science and technology collaboration? What are the current challenges confronting Chinese American scientists? How should we foster scientific ecosystems that are inclusive, resilient to security challenges, and aligned with democratic values? Featuring Zhenan Bao is the K.K. In our first #coachbetter Season 6 episode, Kim unpacks a big concept that has come up a lot in conversations recently: why instructional coaching is (or should be) a full time role in schools. In our recent AAICIS (Association for the Advancement of Instructional Coaching in International Schools) landscape study of international schools we found that many of the schools that don't have coaching programs cite the fact that other educators are fulfilling the role of coach, most likely people with coordinator roles, or middle level leaders. This finding aligns with what clients in The Coach often say about the challenge of advocating for a full time instructional coaching position - and what we hear from school leaders when they're considering hiring coaches. This episode can help you articulate why instructional coaching is a specific skill, and how important it is that there is time specifically devoted for coaching work (not just an add-on to an already full job description). Whether we're pastors, missionaries, or everyday Christians, we know that sin is wrong, harmful, and that we'll feel miserable afterward. So, why do we go back to the same sins over and over again? Why do pastors who know and teach God's truth still pursue sexual sin? Why do Christians watch porn and have affairs as much as non-Christians? In short, why do we believe that sin is beautiful and continue to pursue it? In this fascinating discussion about various issues encountered in right of way or eminent domain appraisal assignments with our good friends Brian O'Neill and David Burgoyne, Infrastructure Junkies! takes a deep dive on what's hot in the industry. Our guests educate us on the purpose and mechanics of review appraisals, which is an opinion on the quality of another appraiser's work. They also touch on appraisal requirements established by the Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisitions Act and walk us through the difference between major and minor deficiencies in an appraisal. Hear how and why the right of way appraisal business is very special, and how it is different from "run of the mill appraisals". Hear why temperament is a critical key to being an effective eminent domain appraiser, what obstacles and barriers there are in eminent domain appraising and why Dave gets so wound up by hubris and arrogance of many appraisers. Along the way, discover the beauty of Brian's home state, Idaho, and maybe Dave doesn't know as much about oysters as he wants everyone to believe. And Kristen puts Mr. Burgoyne through the paces of "Over, Under, Push". This episode is generously sponsored by National Right of Way Review Appraisal, where our friends offer their exemplary appraisal services.

San Francisco lawmakers and health leaders say they're open to “safe supply,” a controversial drug policy that provides regulated access to narcotics. The first public indication came at a Board of Supervisors hearing on Thursday, when Department of Public Health behavioral health director Hillary Kunins said that the city is looking to broaden access to medically assisted treatment for people suffering from drug dependency. Kunins pointed to Canada and Switzerland, which offer prescription opioids—including heroin and fentanyl—in an effort to stabilize the drug supply and destigmatize drug use. The health department is looking to the federal government to change laws around the practice, said Kunins. “In other countries like Canada, like Switzerland, there's a wider range of medications that are actually from the opioid class that have been found to reduce a person's use of illicit opioids and to reduce the risk of overdose,” Kunins said on Thursday. The practice is illegal federally in the U.S. But in subsequent interviews with The Standard, local legislators said they were open to the idea of “safe supply.” State Senator Scott Wiener, who authored safe consumption legislation recently vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom, told The Standard that he would support a “well run” safe supply program as long as it's paired with strong access to treatment. “We know the goal is to try to get people to use less or to stop entirely,” Wiener said. “I think if it's done well [safe supply] can be very helpful in keeping people healthy and reducing drug dealing.” Withdrawal medications such as buprenorphine and methadone are already legal in the U.S. when prescribed for opioid addiction, and advocates on both sides of the drug policy debate have come out in support of utilizing medication-assisted treatment. But the idea of government-regulated narcotics in San Francisco has its critics. https://sfstandard.com/public-health/sf-officials-say-they-back-safe-supply-or-legal-narcotics/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
