Imagine knowing that if you get dementia everyone around you knows how to take care of you. This is dementia care with dignity. Some people in a small town in Idaho have been gifted with the intuitive talents of Judy Cornish, an attorney turned dementia care revolutionary. She created the Dawn method that allows people to have dementia with dignity. She worked out how to see past dementia and provide the best care possible for people with dementia. This is one of the beautiful conversations with a human that I love. Judy Cornish is talented in her understanding of people. She calls this intuitive versus rational thinking skills. Not only has she developed a method but has trained many caretakers in how to understand what is going on inside the mind of someone with dementia. You can find Judy and her method at the following link.https://thedawnmethod.com/creator-judy-cornish/From her website:"The DAWN Method® is a kind, strength-based, person-centered approach to caring for those with dementia and Alzheimer's. In this article we will cover what dementia is and who it affects, the stages of dementia, and then we will introduce the DAWN Method of strength-based, person-centered dementia care. Our goal is to help you understand dementia as well as give you an introduction to a method of dementia care that will decrease stress for caregivers as well as for those experiencing dementia.""Judy Cornish is an author, founder of the Dementia & Alzheimer's Wellbeing Network (DAWN®), creator of the DAWN Method® of dementia care, and a retired elder law attorney. Her two books (The Dementia Handbook and Dementia With Dignity) take person-centered care from theory to practice by identifying the skills not lost to dementia. Through DAWN, Cornish provides online training programs for families and professional caregivers, as well as staff training for agencies and facilities. Her goal is to see dignified dementia care become available for all.In 2010 Ms. Cornish founded the Dementia & Alzheimer's Wellbeing Network in Moscow, Idaho. Through her hands-on work with dementia, she developed a proprietary method for working with people who have dementia—one that helps them develop and retain a sense of security and wellbeing. The DAWN Method is simple enough to be used by caregivers in the home and works in care facilities as well. It targets the emotional distress that accompanies cognitive decline so that behaviors are avoided and caregiver stress is minimized.Today the DAWN Method is in use with seniors in a number of locations in the United States, using a two-tiered care system of case managers and dementia care specialists. Ms. Cornish provides training in the DAWN Method and consults with families, agencies and individual caregivers from all over the world."Support the show

Our guest Judy Cornish is the founder of the Dementia & Alzheimer's Wellbeing Network and the creator of the DAWN Method, a method for working with people who have dementia that helps them develop and retain a sense of security and wellbeing. As an elder law attorney, Judy had no experience with people with dementia until she met a new neighbor and began to help her lead a full life.  Judy identified that the medical model doesn't work well when it comes to managing life with dementia.  She created the DAWN Method, a system that's simple enough to be used by caregivers in the home and works in care facilities as well.  Founded on the belief that dementia doesn't take away all our skills, the DAWN Method fosters the skills and strengths of the individual.  Ms. Cornish's organization provides online training programs for families and professional caregivers, as well as staff training for agencies and facilities. Her goal is to see dignified dementia care become available for all. You can get more information about the DAWN Method here.  Find Judy Cornish's blog here. In today's episode we're exploring a radically different approach to dementia care which can help people remain in their own homes for longer. Judy Cornish is the creator of the DAWN method - and she joins us for a fun and fascinating conversation about how she came into dementia care with no prior experience and developed a way to embrace the strengths and avoid weaknesses of people living with dementia. Judy's model leverages the highly developed intuitive skills of people living with dementia and encourage carers and families to communicate in ways that don't depend on the often-diminishing rational skills, which she explains in quite a bit more detail throughout the episode. If you want to learn more about Judy's wonderful work after this interview which I think you will, she has two books available online The Dementia Handbook and Dementia with Dignity that you can check out. As always you can hear Daniella and Maurie's take and thoughts about these ideas in their show Who Cares? which is released every Friday. The story: Judy Cornish wants to change the way we think of dementia: Instead of focusing on the disease, she says, focus on the experience — and watch symptoms like exit seeking and combativeness decline. The guest: Judy Cornish, author and founder, The Dementia & Alzheimer's Wellbeing Network (DAWN). Your host: Steve Moran, Senior Living Foresight. “Wandering, exit-seeking restlessness, sundowning, confabulation, combative behaviors — we think of all of these behaviors as the symptoms of dementia. But if you really think about it, [they] are actually human behaviors. They are not specific to dementia. … And that has nothing to do with age or diagnosis. That's a human being under stress. “ — Judy Cornish ______________________________ This episode is sponsored by PocketBook Memory — a move-in incentive that makes your community stand out as the person-centered choice. The DAWN method, or Dementia and Alzheimer's Well-Being, is a true person centered approach to how we view, interact with, and care for people living with dementia. As the level of cognitive impairment increases, the person living with dementia experiences emotional distress that is often translated into the behavior we see and associate with dementia. In reality, there is no such thing as dementia related behaviors. The root cause is a response to a particular situation, a feeling of distress or increased confusion. Rather than looking at what is lost The DAWN Method looks at what is retained. The approach helps families and caregivers look at a person's strengths, understand how to communicate and interact based on those strengths, thereby creating a better interactive experience for both parties. Judy explains the unique strength based-approach of looking at a person with dementia which involves Intuitive Thought, Experiential Self and the Mindlessness Tools. Through her courses and certified trainings she works with families and caregivers to become dementia partners. This helps the person living with dementia live with dignity at their own pace and to find comfort in any positive memories they may retain. The tools learned in the DAWN Method ultimately restore the well-being of the person living with dementia. She believes the hope in dementia is how we provide care. Judy's calm, passion, and commitment to person's living with dementia, their families and caregivers is palpable.

Kimberly D. Scott, a former Video Girl, and now Podcast Practitioner interviews Judy Cornish, a licensed attorney, author, and geriatric care manager who spent almost a decade working for families and people experiencing dementia on the care center she founded. Palouse Dementia Care was built to help clients live a wonderful life and help their families experience less stress. Before entering the dementia world, Judy was a psychosocial skills trainer for the mentally ill and practiced law in Portland Oregon. When she decided to semi-retire, she moved to Moscow, Idaho. On where she was renting, a neighbor came to see their landlord and stated that they planned to move their mother into a care facility for she was getting forgetful. It was heartbreaking for Judy to hear, knowing that the mother lived there for 56 years. So out of pure kindness, she offered to look after their mother. Within two weeks a lot of families called, asking if she was also able to help them with their parents and after several months she found herself working for more hours until it became fulltime. She hired people to help her cater to everyone who needed their help. She wanted to help other families begin caring for their loved ones in the same way. After seeing the inconsistency and the chaos it brings if not everyone in the inner circle of the client knows how to handle the situation, she then began developing a training program that would help families provide truly strength-based care at home. Listen to the rest of the interview for Judy shared and discussed the tools of mindlessness, the dawn method, and her insights on how to fully understand and cope when a loved one is diagnosed with dementia. She aims to let everyone gain a deeper and more meaningful connection when a loved one’s cognitive skills will begin to fade.
