In this episode, my guest is Dr. Ellen Langer, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Harvard University and the world's leading researcher on the mind-body connection and the power our thinking has on our physical health. She explains how specific ways of framing and asking questions about the world shape our physical health and rate of aging. Dr. Langer also explains how our perception of time and control significantly impact our rate of physical healing, hormones, immune system, and longevity. She describes mindfulness as a way of framing life, not simply a meditation or other practice, and discusses data showing how to use one's mind to overcome health challenges and achieve remarkable outcomes. Dr. Langer is a luminary and pioneer in researching the relationship between the mind and body with scientific rigor. Her work and our discussion are applicable to women and men of all ages and walks of life. Read the full episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. Anthony shares his most recent findings from his personal meditation practice of reciting sacred Sanskrit texts, including using memorisation and recitation to pacify obsessive thinking, the pros and cons of guru and deity devotion, and his experiment with deliberately reducing his practice volume and observing the mindlessness and habitual tendencies that arose as a consequence. Anthony discusses how to enter altered states of consciousness through recitation of memorised texts, why he is now memorising Shakespeare instead of more Sanskrit, and why it is essential to include the body in meditation and other mental feats. Anthony also discusses what can be learned from the examples of figures such as Sherlock Holmes, Giordano Bruno, Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as discussing his latest book, Flyboy, a crime novel in which the detective protagonist uses specialist memory techniques to track down a serial killer. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep203-unlock-the-enlightened-mind-anthony-metivier Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … 00:00 - Intro 01:13 - Flyboy 02:17 - Effects of taking a break from meditation and memorisation 04:45 - Memorising Shakespeare and Atmabodha 06:02 - Memorising Sanskrit as a meditation to pacify obsessive thinking 09:27 - Ideas vs execution 09:56 - Mindlessness after taking a break from meditation 11:20 - Engine and algorithm of the Ruba Gita 12:28 - The genius of Sanskrit's construction 16:29 - How to induce altered states through recitation 19:37 - From mystical states to positive behaviour change 22:32 - Gary Weber's enlightenment and idolising the teacher 25:07 - Pros and cons of deity and guru devotion 27:31 - Why memorise Shakespeare? 30:49 - Vaudeville feats of memory and multi-tasking 33:32 - Essential to include the body in meditation 38:33 - The theory of craft and failed creative writing professors 43:39 - Sherlock Holmes and Gary Gygax 46:49 - Writing Flyboy 50:37 - Memory techniques and PTSD 51:58 - Building puzzles into Flyboy for the readers to solve 57:11 - Memory techniques hidden in Giordano Bruno's plays 58:13 - Popularising memory techniques for non specialists 59:47 - Recording the audiobook version 01:03:24 - The future of Anthony's publishing efforts 01:07:45 - Have fun and experiment! … Previous episode with Anthony Metivier: - https://www.guruviking.com/ep123-master-of-memory-anthony-metivier/ To purchase Flyboy, visit: - https://www.magneticmemorymethod.com/fb-sq/ To find out more about Anthony Metivier, visit: - https://www.youtube.com/c/AnthonyMetivierMMM - https://www.magneticmemorymethod.com/

I hope you found this podcast valuable, and I appreciate your subscription. Many thanks for your time. Please accept my deepest gratitude. Thanks for listening. Thanks for subscribing. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for being here and helping to make this podcast, this episode, and this thing we do all possible to help you relax, focus, and be mindful. Mindfulness means living in the moment and fully being aware of our inner and outer experiences. When you are mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance without judging them as good or bad. When it is cultivated intentionally, it is referred to as deliberate mindfulness. By practicing mindfulness regularly, you will not only feel better, but you can physically alter the structure and function of your brain. Anxiety and worry will no longer consume you, and you'll be more focused and aware than ever. Being more mindful means slowing down some of our actions and focusing on one thing at a time. While it is very difficult to be fully present every waking moment, we can work to cultivate some more mindfulness in some small moments of our day. With practice, these small moments of mindfulness can carry over into the rest of our lives and help us to be more present in our days. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/effortlessmeditation/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/effortlessmeditation/support

Imagine knowing that if you get dementia everyone around you knows how to take care of you. This is dementia care with dignity. Some people in a small town in Idaho have been gifted with the intuitive talents of Judy Cornish, an attorney turned dementia care revolutionary. She created the Dawn method that allows people to have dementia with dignity. She worked out how to see past dementia and provide the best care possible for people with dementia. This is one of the beautiful conversations with a human that I love. Judy Cornish is talented in her understanding of people. She calls this intuitive versus rational thinking skills. Not only has she developed a method but has trained many caretakers in how to understand what is going on inside the mind of someone with dementia. You can find Judy and her method at the following link.https://thedawnmethod.com/creator-judy-cornish/From her website:"The DAWN Method® is a kind, strength-based, person-centered approach to caring for those with dementia and Alzheimer's. In this article we will cover what dementia is and who it affects, the stages of dementia, and then we will introduce the DAWN Method of strength-based, person-centered dementia care. Our goal is to help you understand dementia as well as give you an introduction to a method of dementia care that will decrease stress for caregivers as well as for those experiencing dementia.""Judy Cornish is an author, founder of the Dementia & Alzheimer's Wellbeing Network (DAWN®), creator of the DAWN Method® of dementia care, and a retired elder law attorney. Her two books (The Dementia Handbook and Dementia With Dignity) take person-centered care from theory to practice by identifying the skills not lost to dementia. Through DAWN, Cornish provides online training programs for families and professional caregivers, as well as staff training for agencies and facilities. Her goal is to see dignified dementia care become available for all.In 2010 Ms. Cornish founded the Dementia & Alzheimer's Wellbeing Network in Moscow, Idaho. Through her hands-on work with dementia, she developed a proprietary method for working with people who have dementia—one that helps them develop and retain a sense of security and wellbeing. The DAWN Method is simple enough to be used by caregivers in the home and works in care facilities as well. It targets the emotional distress that accompanies cognitive decline so that behaviors are avoided and caregiver stress is minimized.Today the DAWN Method is in use with seniors in a number of locations in the United States, using a two-tiered care system of case managers and dementia care specialists. Ms. Cornish provides training in the DAWN Method and consults with families, agencies and individual caregivers from all over the world."Support the show

The title of this week's Episode is simply a statement of fact. How could someone who is not in charge of their own mental faculties avoid doing awful things to other people and then... do awful things, repeatedly, to themselves!?Mindlessness is the root cause of inappropriate behaviour starting with the little throwaway remarks that we throw at our little children, throwaway remarks that we, as mindless adults, will forget 30 seconds later (assuming we even notice them in the first place!) but which will scar the little child for life. Seriously. Then, in later life, people do awful things to us. And what do we do? We replay what they've done to us. We let what they did to us fester. We do it all over again to ourselves, again and again and again. Is there an alternative to all this madness? And, if there is, how does this work in practice? Well you had better listen to this week's Episode, hadn't you?

Are you wondering what the big deal is about living in mindfulness? Have you tried so hard to break the cycle of stress and overwhelm in your life so but just can't seem to get very far? Do you find yourself craving mindless activities like binge watching your favorite show or scrolling post after post on social media anytime you have a spare moment? If you answered yes to any or all of those questions, then this is the episode for you. I'm so excited to share with you a conversation I had with my former client Sadie all about her experience moving from using mindless activities as a form of control to enjoying mindfulness in everything from sitting in silence to time with her children. After going through my program, really doing the work within herself and in partnership with the Lord, she confidently says “I feel freedom in my health and joy in my heart!” I know that you'll hear and experience the truth of that as she shares all that she knows and has learned about the importance of mindfulness in her health, life, and relationship with the Lord! My prayer is that as you listen in on this conversation, you are encouraged to partner with the Lord yourself and see what areas in your life He might be calling you to live more mindfully! **If you are ready to make the shift from spending your free time mindlessly to embracing a mindful life more fully but aren't sure where to start or would like to talk it through with me, send me a quick email or book a free call with me! I'd love to hear more and see how I can serve and encourage you in the ways the Lord is calling you to live a healthy and empowered life.** Connect with Lauren: Email: lauren@lauren-joyce.com Book a FREE Call: go.oncehub.com/coffeewithlauren Website: healthyandempoweredliving.com Join our FREE Joyful Health for Christian Moms FB Community: bit.ly/joyfulhealthforchristianmoms

Intrinsic Motivation & Becoming the Captain of Your Own Life The Dream World Podcast Book Club:  “New You! Who Knew?” David EdwardsAvailable on Amazon and www.davidredwards.com.   David was CEO of a Community Health Center creating the leading integrated, person-focused, primary care center in the country.  He realized that many people are missing core skills that if they had would make their lives so much better.  He left a well-paying job and embarked on researching and writing a book to help regular people learn the principles and skills needed to become the captain of their own life. David talks about how he has witnessed and contributed to the evolution of healthcare systems. He saw the need for a health system designed to actually heal. This is one that takes a whole-picture approach, looks at the patient as a whole mind-body & soul, involves nature in the environment, and focuses care around the patient's needs. Nature has many metaphors that can teach us life lessons, and incorporating it into our healthcare aids healing and alignment. He started to teach others how to become the person they want to become by being the captain of their own life and relying less on external motivation or stimuli. He has studied the models of external and internal change and how it affects our thinking patterns and lifestyle. Keeping up with the change around us and in society is necessary to feel free and happy, but it is also important to navigate the change we direct in our own internal person. The person we are becoming evolves every day. Internal motivation goes a long way against obstacles when trying to achieve your life goals. How can we bear healthy fruit in our lives like a cherry tree with strong roots?Podcast Episode 9 reference: Signs of Reincarnation- The Evidence Based Research & Limitations of Science (With Jim Matlock)Timothy Francis Leary was an American psychologist and writer known for his strong advocacy of psychedelic drugs. In part 6, Our Mindlessness Script illustrates how we adapt to cultural conditioning by not thinking. The 1998 film, The Truman Show, starring Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, is an exaggerated cinematic example of a pre-conscious life plan based on a decision made in early childhood. Using the film, we can understand how the part of us that craves (Psycho) operates based on the directives of the script. The parallel with the virtual world is, like Truman Burbank, we are following a Mindlessness script with a “Don't Think!” injunction: algorithms control the possibility of choice and frames of reference based on the potency of user data. "Mindlessness is pervasive. Virtually all of us, almost all of the time, are not there. But when we're not there, we're not there to know we're not there." Dr. Ellen Langer is a professor in the Psychology Department at Harvard University where she was the first woman to be tenured in the department. She has been described as the "mother of mindfulness" and has written extensively on the illusion of control, mindful aging, stress, decision-making, and health. Her books, written for general and academic readers, include Mindfulness, The Power of Mindful Learning, On Becoming An Artist: Reinventing Yourself Through Mindful Creativity, and Counterclockwise: Mindful Health and the Power of Possibility. Her most recent book The Handbook of Mindfulness is an anthology that brings together the latest multi-disciplinary research on mindfulness. She is the recipient of four Distinguished Scientist Awards and the Liberty Science Genius Award. In this episode of The Soul of Life I speak with Dr. Langer about how a comfort with uncertainty and curiosity--mindfulness--creates powerful changes in the brain. We discuss her famous "counterclockwise" studies and her claims that mindfulness leads to powerful improvements in health generally, and specific improvements in memory, vision, and hearing. Among Langer's six academic books and 200 research articles is her extensive work on the placebo effect. "So you take that sugar pill and you get better. The question is what's making you better. And the answer is you're making yourself better. A good deal of our research is devoted to getting rid of the sham. You don't need someone to give it to you. You don't have to make believe that it's effective. You can actually control your own health."
