Continuing with their month of season three Justice League Unlimited reviews has the Good Brothers on a journey like no other as they review "Chaos at the Earth's Core" on this week's episode. The hosts discuss why this episode feels and may have been served better as a Justice League season 1 story, Kamandi and He-Man references, a huge miss when it came to including a classic DCAU needle drop and a unrecognizable double-voice casting performance from a series regular. Plus the hosts chat about some inconsistencies in Metallo's vulnerabilities, why the Stargirl/Supergirl rivalry doesn't quite work and a new design for S.T.R.I.P.E. All of this and much more plus a preview of next week's Elseworlds visit for the first time in over 200 episodes await you on this week's all new DCAU Review!

And tomorrow it begins! Chamar and Andrew are back with yet another episode as we start our venture through the Tomorrowverse, featuring new stories from characters spinning right out of our first season of the DCAMU. We see in Constantine: House of Mystery what our favorite magic user has been up to since Apokolips War, a version of Blue Beetle not like his live-action counterpart in Blue Beetle, and a Planet of the Apes adaptation that's different enough just to avoid lawsuits in Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth. As always, we are here to ask the big questions: Does the story make sense? How does it compare to the comic? Is it a good addition to the universe? And most importantly, how old is Kamandi?Follow Yet Another DC Animated Podcast on social media @yadcanimatedpod. There's a new sheriff in town in post-Great Disaster Earth: Gerry Conway took over as writer in Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth issue 38. Jack Kirby reaches the end of his writing run on Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth. After top-shelf stories about a Soviet spacecraft and an “eviction battle” in a resort hotel with crocs in the pool, Kirby's swan song leaves something to be desired, with an … uncomfortable plot point, and myriad threads dangling. Tim … Continue reading #783 Jack Kirby's “Kamandi” #35-37: Off the deep end

Plus, we talk Kamandi and Captain Marvel in this all new episode.

As we continue through Jack Kirby‘s 1970s issues of Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth, Tim and Emmet keep slowing down! Kirby also references … Continue reading #777 Jack Kirby's “Kamandi” #29-31: “Up, up, and away!”
While Kamandi‘s exorcism story in issue 24 leaves something to be desired, never mind that: the subsequent four issues, as discussed in this episode, deliver the kinds of interesting concepts we've come to expect, as Kamandi and Ben visit the Dominion of Devils, fight Sacker's Co. and their environment-destroying activities, and find out what the … Continue reading #774 Jack Kirby's “Kamandi” #24-28: Havin' a look-see for some fight-fight
In this segment of Jack Kirby's Kamandi series, we visit a version of 1920s Chicago that seems to be drawing on, or prefiguring, various other pop culture stories, and then move on to Monster Lake, home of intelligent, talking — and sometimes romantically inclined! — dolphins and killer whales. Kirby's war experience again figures in … Continue reading #773 Jack Kirby's “Kamandi” #19-23: On to Monster Lake!
The Last Boy on Earth! This Jack Kirby creation is probably not known to many outside hardcore comic book fans, but thanks to an animated short, one listener discovered his existence and asked Kurt to explain more about the world of Kamandi.
This week we continue our look at Jack Kirby's run on Kamandi, another of the DC properties he created. Tim and Emmet find that issues 11 through 18 include a giant insect, a violent horse race, another standout issue in the mode of issue 7's King Kong story, a clue as to how the animals … Continue reading #770 Jack Kirby's “Kamandi” #11-18: Kliklak forever

If you can't get the rights to Planet of the Apes, do the next best thing: get Jack Kirby to come up with a concept that's Apes-adjacent! That was DC Comics' strategy in the early '70s. What resulted was Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth, a series with multiple intelligent animals lording over caveman-level humans, … Continue reading #767 Jack Kirby's “Kamandi” #1-10: It's a knockout!
In their long-awaited return, Phil & Jake rank patriarchy, the legendary comics creator Jack Kirby, and the soft drink Fanta on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Bully sticks really are made from beef penis. "Work for hire" is the situation that an illustrator like Kirby, or a session musician, might work under. He was paid cash for his work but didn't retain any ownership. At the time, the idea was that the work was ephemeral trash anyways; but now, years later, it's proven to be valuable. The Fourth World was Kirby's set of fantasy/science-fiction stories at DC. He got to do pretty much what he wanted and he went nuts with it. Mister Miracle was maybe the character that's most closely identified with Kirby. He's an escape artist refugee who lives in the suburbs and is married to an action heroine. Star Wars really seems to pull from Kirby's work. Doctor Doom is a very fun comic-book villain created by Kirby (and Stan Lee). Stan Lee worked with Kirby in the 1960s and co-created almost all of the early Marvel characters and stories with him. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay is an acclaimed novel by Michael Chabon where one of the characters is based (partly) on Kirby. Here's Kirby's original drawing of Captain America punching-out Hitler. The Banshees of Inisherin is a 2022 film partly about legacy that explores the question “Does being a decent person matter?” Thundarr the Barbarian was a 1980s cartoon about a post-apocalyptic adventurer. Kirby did some design work and by all accounts was paid fairly and treated well. Kamandi was a post-apocalyptic comic about the last boy on Earth, an Earth now populated by talking animals. It seems like it was heavily influenced by Planet of the Apes, even though Kirby hadn't seen the movie when he created the comic. Holy Mountain is a film directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky, financed partly by John Lennon, which is difficult to explain. It's surrealistic, absurd and mind-blowing, and it really seems Kirby-influenced. Kirby Krackle is a visual effect that Kirby was known for. If there was energy coursing through something, he might illustrate it with weird dots around it. The Neil Gaiman quote that Jake recites is from the book Kirby: King of Comics by Mark Evanier. O.M.A.C. (One Man Army Corps) is a truly bonkers comic written and drawn by Jack Kirby. It appears as if Glenn Danzig did know Kirby personally, and even worked with him. Here's an interview that Danzig conducted with Kirby. Mezzo Mix is totally the most normal thing in the world. We discuss Kit-Kats in Japan, which have been incredibly successful there, in part because their name sort of sounds like "good luck" in Japanese. There are many, many variations on the traditional Kit-Kat flavor in Japan. Some of these have come to America as well. The Fantanas ads were a throwback to an earlier style of ads. The premise is that sexy babes with soft drinks show up and refresh people. Here's a good example, and here's one in Spanish. Other sodas discussed include Crush, Orangina, Surge & Josta. Jake drank is half-Fanta at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando, which is near Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville. He paired it with some Old Florida Original Gourmet Chips. The fever has really passed on hard seltzer. Now that the dust has settled, in the cold light of day we can say it was ranked fairly. Calamari isn't good, it's just a rubbery mass. Hulk Hogan was a boring wrestler who's had a really negative impact on the world. Phil thinks Aerosmith are dire, just absolute bottom level garbage, and he's Phil has banned from his life with a zero tolerance policy. Do you like DC Comics? How about the 70s and 80s? And what about DC Comics in the 70s and 80s? Well, you're in luck, folks: we have someone who wrote and edited DC Comics during those expansion years as today's guest. That's right, it's Jack C. Harris! Jack was hired at DC as part of its "Junior Woodchuck" program, where he started as an assistant editor. Soon he was writing books too, starting with Kamandi and then Wonder Woman and other heavy hitters. Jack and Joe Quesada co-created a new version of the Ray in 1992, and he was also the editor for the debuts of Black Lightning and Firestorm. In this Oren Only episode, we dig into all of the above and more, so take a seat and take a listen!_____________________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Robert Meyer Burnett, the Viceroy of Verisimilitude, was very excited when I spoke with him this morning. He was raving about the second episode of Moon Knight (on Disney+) and where he thought the show could go in the coming weeks. Rob also had more than a few thoughts on where Star Trek seems to be headed. Of course, Rob attended the screening of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (Director's Edition) on the Paramount lot on Monday, but I wanted to know what he thought of the Star Trek fan film, YORKTOWN: A TIME TO HEAL, that dropped today that had been in production for over 40 years and featured a much more youthful George Takei. We talked a little AMBULANCE, ARMAGEDDON, and ETERNALS movies, as well as Hulk, Jack Kirby, and one of our guilty pleasures, Kamandi: Last Boy On Earth.I invite you to listen in on my weekday conversations with my friend and business partner, Robert Meyer Burnett, as we talk about the things we love: great movies, inspiring television programming, nostalgic genre entertainment, and pop culture.- Mike Bawden, co-host of the ROADTRIPPIN' PodcastThis is an original show produced for the PGS podcast network and was recorded on April 6, 2022.
