It's also going to help prepare you to give an answer to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you (2 Peter 3:15). Mike D'Virgilio joins Joel Settecase to discuss why, contrary to what skeptics say, the Bible doesn't seem like a made-up book at all. Specifically, you're going to learn about:  • What Question-Begging Anti-Supernaturalism is, and why it's a problem.  • Verisimilitude, and why the Bible seems to have it.  • Why, when it comes to Scripture, it has to be verbal plenary inspiration, or nothing.  • And why we must not let non-Christians get away with believing in a "partial Jesus."  —- Resources for You:  Mike D'Virgilio's Website: MikeDVirgilio.com Get Mike D'Virgilio's New Book, Uninvented, here: https://a.co/d/du3jau7  The ThinkSquad group on Facebook:  https://facebook.com/groups/thinksquad  Get a ThinkSquad Plus premium subscription for access to apologetics and worldview AMA calls: https://thinksquadplus.supercast.com.  ***Note! Feature Creep: Built-in Microwave

Ned and Meg discuss verisimilitude in a number of contexts ranging from philosophy to art and in the experiences of everyday life. We talk about capturing and conveying truth, and how two truthful things can be closer or farther from THE truth than each other, but how to measure that? We glance over some philosophers along the way as we discuss writing, movies, paintings, expertise, identity, hermeneutics, medicine, Mark Twain, and a future in which the only reference materials are romance novels. Thanks for listening, wash your hands, try to stay healthy, don't get anyone sick, don't be a dick, all the things.

THE BOYS returned with the first three episodes of their third season yesterday and the Viceroy of Verisimilitude binged them all before breakfast this morning. LOL! As you can imagine, he has a few thoughts on both the start of the third season and the series overall. When you take a look at what writers Erik Kripke and Anne Cofell Saunders and the entire production team have done with Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's source material and you can make the case that THE BOYS we're watching on Amazon Prime is going places where the original comic book series did not tread ... and we're loving it.We discuss the importance of creating compelling characters and making sure that every moment they're on screen, they're doing something (or having something done to them) that advances the story. Compare that to some of the other genre shows we've discussed lately, and I think you can see where we're going with all this.As always, I'll be writing more about all this on the ROADTRIPPIN' blog later today (and will probably post it this evening). You can check it out on our website: https://postgeeksingularity.com/roadtrippin-with-rmb/And remember, you can always send us a letter. There are a lot of really great things about working with my friend, Robert Meyer Burnett. Among them are his stories - and he's got hundreds of them - which are expertly told with a level of enthusiasm that's contagious. Today, he shares a great one about one of his very first, in-depth interviews.Still a student at USC, Rob was given the opportunity to conduct an on-stage, one-on-one interview with James Cameron. I won't spoil the story here, but let's just say things don't start out the way Rob planned. But unsurprisingly, he persevered and the outcome is tremendously gratifying and informative.Cameron is an auteur on a level unlike many filmmakers of his era. He not only knows how to do whatever might need to be done to get his film made, he actually does it.And these aren't garage band-level projects, either. The man has built and sunk ocean liners, designed entire planets from scratch and staged running skirmishes with alien armies in no space more than a typical school hallway. But the fact that a person has the knowledge, wherewithal and natural talent to persevere and jump through the hoops to get the job done isn't the part that fascinates me. As Rob points out in our 45-minute conversation today, Cameron (and other directors at his level), has a clear vision of the "reality" they're trying to create in their film and they won't sacrifice that sense of verisimilitude in order to get a cheap high from a stunning visual.Just because something looks or sounds "cool" is no reason to break the rules that have been constructed for the world you're depicting in your film or show. It's a lesson that seems to have passed by a large number of filmmakers and showrunners. These people are sacrificing the integrity of their characters and franchises in order to get the "cool shot" or provide a little something extra for "fans" to show they understand the franchise. It's especially ironic when you consider that so many of the "little extras" these producers and directors throw in break some fundamental (and often unwritten) rule of the franchise as to upset older fans who take such blatant ignorance as a sign of disrespect. That frustration is so often expressed as rage that the fans who vent are often labeled as "gate keepers" and their concerns are dismissed as irrelevant because of other (often financial) considerations. What can be done to encourage the growth and development of new ideas and new franchises? Is that a possible solution and area of growth. I'd like to think so, because that's just the kind of stuff that Rob and I are working on for the future. And you're a part of it here. By listening to our podcast and letting us know what you think.Go to our website: www.postgeeksingularity.com, click on the "Contact Us" link in the menu and then send us a message to let us know how we're doing and what's on your mind.We look forward to hearing from you.I invite you to listen in on my weekday conversations with my friend and business partner, Robert Meyer Burnett, as we talk about the things we love: great movies, inspiring television programming, nostalgic genre entertainment, and pop culture.- Mike Bawden, co-host of the ROADTRIPPIN' PodcastThis is an original show produced for the PGS podcast network and was recorded on April 19, 2022.

Robert Meyer Burnett, the Viceroy of Verisimilitude, was very excited when I spoke with him this morning. He was raving about the second episode of Moon Knight (on Disney+) and where he thought the show could go in the coming weeks. Rob also had more than a few thoughts on where Star Trek seems to be headed. Of course, Rob attended the screening of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (Director's Edition) on the Paramount lot on Monday, but I wanted to know what he thought of the Star Trek fan film, YORKTOWN: A TIME TO HEAL, that dropped today that had been in production for over 40 years and featured a much more youthful George Takei. We talked a little AMBULANCE, ARMAGEDDON, and ETERNALS movies, as well as Hulk, Jack Kirby, and one of our guilty pleasures, Kamandi: Last Boy On Earth.I invite you to listen in on my weekday conversations with my friend and business partner, Robert Meyer Burnett, as we talk about the things we love: great movies, inspiring television programming, nostalgic genre entertainment, and pop culture.- Mike Bawden, co-host of the ROADTRIPPIN' PodcastThis is an original show produced for the PGS podcast network and was recorded on April 6, 2022.

Podcast organizer, Dr. Jill Fennell, speaks with a peer Georgia Tech Marion L. Brittain Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Eric Lewis, about verisimilitude's place in fantasy by discussing the television series A Discovery of Witches. In this episode they discuss our connection to fantasy in terms of the desire for it and its tenuous relationship with verisimilitude. Through their conversation, they discuss much of the first season (2018) of “Disco Witches” to talk about how our enjoyment of fantasy can be related to some “real-seeming” elements within the larger fantastic narrative.

Devin & James are back in the DEN OF CIN! In our new PODCAST, we celebrate one of the most admired filmmakers of our lifetime, RICHARD DONNER, who the world lost on July 5th. From THE OMEN to SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, and THE GOONIES to LETHAL WEAPON, and everything in between and beyond... Richard Donner's attention to (his and my favorite word) VERISIMILITUDE in his movies made him one of the most influential storytellers to ever call "ACTION!"  From his start in the pioneering days of Television, through being one of the chief architects of modern popular Cinema (rightfully the 3rd part of a trifecta with Spielberg and Lucas), Donner delivered with his uncanny sense of humor, grounded approach to fantasy material, and the believability of his characters even in the craziest situations. He was arguably the only director who could make us all believe a man could fly.

We have a pile of them that we have used or considered for our home games and of course we are going to talk about them. Oh, and there is an actually word for the "realism" we keep talking about in the episode. "Verisimilitude" is when story elements are consistent with respect to the genre and tone of the world they are in. So, many of these rules are inconsistent with our lived reality, but still have verisimilitude because they are consistent with the expectations of how your game works. Is it a meta-commentary on what our culture values (looks over intent) or is it a practical concern that as technology improves and media degrades, restoration (and enhancement) are required? When is it okay to modify the original work (e.g. remove the visible wires from the invading Martians in George Pall's 50's epic, WAR OF THE WORDS) and when does it go too far (e.g. colorizing CASABLANCA)? Cultivating an attitude of gratitude begins with taking off our (metaphorical) masks and becoming real, becoming truthful. Spiritual connections and insight must start from a place of clarity and intention. This then, is the Art of Verisimilitude: making our best effort to be honest, natural, believable. Not because we're trying to convince anyone of our authenticity, but because we have realized that this is our own personal path, our best chance towards a deep understanding. It may not be easy but no one expects success without some failures along the way. So let's pledge to support each other in our quest to appreciate each day and to live it fully, to meet all our challenges honestly and boldly, and to always stay true to ourselves during all our life's epic journeys. When we say realistic we are imposing a series of norms and laws of physics, society, biology, etc. that correspond with our world’s. No matter how you know Erik, you know he is the sultan of high strangeness, and High Weirdness may just be his magnum opus, which is saying quite a bit if you’ve read his previous work. High Weirdness charts the emergence of a new psychedelic spirituality that arose from American countercultural voices of the 1970s, including Philip K Dick, Terence McKenna and Robert Anton Wilson. We like to think of our world as one in which things are either true, or not true. The word "verisimilitude" means "having the appearance of truth". Rev Bill Marchiony explores our understanding of truth, and why we have need for a word like this.

Episode 50: #LMW2015 Mixed Tape Volume 2Thanks for tuning in to 210 Local Media Podcast and day five of our Local Music Week 2015 episodes. This is our second mixed tape of the week and we wanted to mix in some old friends and some new friends.First up, we have some friends we recently reunited with at the Slowlikefire City Of Echoes Release show, Secrets & Irises with "Golden Circles" and Langton Drive with “0509". Right after that, we follow the punk vibe to some classic San Antonio punk, Nada Mas Basura with their self titled track. Up next, we've got some new friends we met up with at a Local Music Week meeting a few weeks ago, Days That End In Why and their song, "Trick Silver Linings". In true throwback Thursday fashion, we've got a band who is no longer in the San Antonio scene, but left it's mark regardless, Viet Ruse with "Point Of View". Thanks to another Local Music Week meeting, I finally got to meet Nathan Alvarado from Remanon and wanted to play "Justice Paige". Even though we already played this song recently, they've got their show tonight and I just wanted to make it fresh for y'all. A last minute addition made it in with Fallout and their song "Hell To See". They're having their first show as a band at Bond's 007, tomorrow night! Up next, we've got The Native Roar and their track "Dangerous Ways". I totally dig their vibe, very tribal/alternative. Calming things down a little bit, is Dylan Tanner. I met Dylan at the first Local Music Week Meeting at Brick in The Blue Star Arts Complex and was immediately impressed, he's a really nice guy and we're proud to feature his lyrics on our site at www.210LocalMedia.com/lyrics There, you can find the lyrics to his song "Me". Last but not least, to continue the chill vibe, we've got Julian Gill. I met Julian a while back where he played a short opening spot set at Jack's Patio and I think he's another very talented young guy to keep an eye on. We've got his track, "Harder Than Wine".This is day five of local Music Week and there's plenty more that you can find all over social media if you use #LMW2015 Thanks to Local 782, SATX Music, and Do210 for being the primary organizers behind this years Local Music Week. On Thursday, May 21st, our friends Remanon and Verisimilitude will be playing at the 502 Bar. On Friday, May 22nd, our friends, Blackbird Sing will be playing a show at the famous Sam's Burger Joint. Episode 49: #LMW2015 The Heroine RADIOThanks for tuning in to day four of our Local Music Week 2015 episodes.Well, it finally happened, we're proud to bring you the hardest working band in San Antonio, The Heroine and their second release, Songs From The Southland Volume 1. Next month, we'll be taking a trip back in time and bringing you their first full album release, Playing For Keeps. I've only seen The Heroine a couple of times, but both times, they were insane. The Heroine is 5 parts hair, 10 parts sweat, 20 parts good old southern rock, and a whole hell of a lotta showmanship. Frontman Lynwood Presley King and the rest of the band truly leave themselves on the stage each night and sometimes Lynwood will throw in a couple of sermons about pain, love, and joy. By the way, if they tell you to some closer to the stage, I'd leave at least 5 feet around them, or you'll be likely to catch a flying mic stand to the head. However, if you do get hit, it's rock and roll baby! This is day four of local Music Week and there's plenty more that you can find all over social media if you use #LMW2015 Thanks to Local 782, SATX Music, and Do210 for being the primary organizers behind this years Local Music Week. Episode 48: #LMW2015 Fair Coyote RADIOThanks for tuning in to day three of our Local Music Week 2015 episodes. This episode is another RADIO episode, this time for our friend Mauricio Vazquez, known to me as Fair Coyote. Fair Coyote's music is a veritable plethora of sonic and aural soundscapes. There's no tying him to a specific genre, although I hear Pink Floyd, tribal, and industrial influences throughout. He is a 23 year old multi-instrumentalist, born in Mexico City, but has transplanted to San Antonio. Right now, he's been busy creating solo projects and has recently been collaborating with local filmmakers and musicians. Currently Fair Coyote is recording for "Paths" an EP that is set to be released in July. Colin Marshall sits down in North Hollywood with film and television critic David Bax, co-host of the podcasts Battleship Pretension and Previously On. They discuss his fifth-grade shoving match over Ghostbusters; the difference between criticism and the assertion of one's opinions; being a film and television critic while living right near the heart of film and television production; Chicago's advantages as a filmgoing city, including but not limited to the Gene Siskel Film Center; discovering a cinephile community on the bus; St. Louis and other cities' loss of local critics writing with local sensibilities; whether the aspiring critic must first reject working in production; the sharpening of his critical perspectives on formalism and structuralism as revealed by Michael Mann's Public Enemies; if a critic should tell an audience why they like a film, why the audience should like a film, why the audience should pay attention to a film, or simply how a film works; why the internet offers a superior medium for television criticism; what television can do that film can't, and why to watch them differently; whether television shows labor under a corrupting business model; Treme, New Orleans and geographical verisimilitude; the askew real-placeness of many Los Angeles productions; the outdated marketing of television as evidenced by the Whitney billboards that once littered town; how and why to avoid approaching art as commodity; what he would say to those who who don't consider criticism a "real job" (and how he would agree with them); and the necessity of discussing film and television as if for posterity, just as a program like The Sopranos seems to have been created for it.
