From the death of Pope Francis and his controversial political legacy to explosive debates over immigration and MS-13, this episode tackles two seismic stories shaking faith, politics, and national identity. We dive into Vatican turmoil, the future of the Catholic Church, and the media's spin on illegal immigration, gang violence, and due process—unfiltered and unapologetic.
We break down the latest on Lachie Galvin's messy situation at Wests Tigers. Are the Dragons breathing fire? Does the NRL need more big-time blockbusters like we saw on Good Friday? The most un-Melbourne-like performance, more despair for the Chooks, the curious case of Origin fullbacks and don't sleep on the Warriors. All that and more covered by ABC Sport's Brett Sprigg and Andrew Moore.

The Supreme Court just handed the Trump administration another legal win — this time, by blocking a judge's order that would have forced the rehiring of thousands of federal workers abruptly terminated in a government downsizing blitz. At the heart of the battle are more than 16,000 probationary employees across six major agencies — including Veterans Affairs and Treasury — who were fired despite some reportedly receiving stellar performance reviews. A federal judge in California called the terminations unlawful, accusing Trump's team of sidestepping federal hiring laws. But now the high court says: not so fast. This marks the third time in less than a week that the Supreme Court has sided with the Trump administration, which is swiftly using its second term to reshape the federal workforce. Meanwhile, labor unions and advocacy groups are calling the firings a direct assault on public service and government integrity. According to lawsuits, more than 24,000 probationary employees have been let go since Trump took office. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Edition No115 | 21-03-2025 - Russian drones have hit civilian targets in Ukraine's Odesa. the port city is ‘on fire' after a ‘massive' Russian attack against civilian targets and civilian infrastructure. Three people were injured, and a high-rise apartment building and a shopping centre destroyed. This is the essence of the Russian World – violence, mayhem and a desire to spread fear. This is Russia's response to Trump's so-called peace deal; this is what American weakness and naivety leads to. Rather than dampening down Russia's violence, it provokes into yet more intense fury. Russian forces launched a mass drone attack on Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odesa late on Thursday, striking three locations that triggered fires, while three districts of the city suffered from power cuts. Odesa has been a frequent target of Russian attacks in the three-year war, particularly the city's port facilities, which handle vital grain exports and provide essential income to support the Ukrainian economy.Odesa was engulfed in flames just, hours after US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about ending the war and as peace talks are set to resume on Monday. Although they are more and more coming to resemble capitulation and betrayal talks, which pointedly are taking place between the US and Russia, but with little to no influence in the process from Ukraine or Europe. Trump recently held separate phone calls with Putin and Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky on implementing a partial ceasefire – projected optimism about reaching an end to the war on Thursday, saying “we're doing pretty well in that regard.” Reality tells a different story. ----------LINKS:https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russian-drones-hit-civilian-targets-odesa-cause-injuries-officials-say-2025-03-20/https://edition.cnn.com/2025/03/21/europe/ukraine-russia-odesa-fire-trump-intl-hnk/index.htmlhttps://www.reuters.com/world/europe/czech-president-pavel-was-odesa-russia-pounded-city-with-drones-2025-03-21/----------SILICON CURTAIN FILM FUNDRAISERA project to make a documentary film in Ukraine, to raise awareness of Ukraine's struggle and in supporting a team running aid convoys to Ukraine's front-line towns.https://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extras----------SILICON CURTAIN LIVE EVENTS - FUNDRAISER CAMPAIGN Events in 2025 - Advocacy for a Ukrainian victory with Silicon Curtainhttps://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extrasOur first live events this year in Lviv and Kyiv were a huge success. The controversy swirling around Disney's live-action Snow White runs the gamut from casting backlash to political tension. Rachel Zegler's modern spin on the iconic princess ignited debates over “wokeness,” while leaked photos of diverse actors playing dwarfs gave way to CGI stand-ins, triggering questions about authenticity. Meanwhile, Gal Gadot's pro-Israel stance and Zegler's pro-Palestine comments added extra fuel to the fire, turning a simple fairytale remake into a cultural flashpoint.Disney's cautious marketing approach suggests an attempt to manage the uproar, but critics wonder if transparency and proactive engagement might have quelled the blowback. The movie itself is drawing early praise, which raises the question: does good storytelling prevail over controversy, or do larger social debates overshadow the final product?Feeling Panicked When Crisis Hits? The Elephant In The Room Property Podcast | Inside Australian Real Estate
Thousands of homes wiped out, entire neighborhoods gone—wildfires in Los Angeles have reached a terrifying new level. But could something like that happen here in Australia? Former New South Wales Fire and Rescue Commissioner Greg Mullins joins us to break it all down—how bushfires are getting worse, why they’re becoming harder to fight, and what that means for people living near bushland. Greg shares his firsthand experience working with fire agencies around the world and explains how bushfires are now turning into full-blown urban firestorms. We get into why hazard reduction burns are getting trickier, what building codes can (and can’t) do to protect homes, and the brutal reality that some fires just can’t be fought. It’s a conversation that every homeowner—especially those in fire-prone areas—needs to hear. So what can we actually do about it? Greg’s got some straight-up advice, plus a few surprising facts that might change the way you think about bushfire risk. Episode Highlights: 00:00 - Introduction 00:52 - Who is Greg Mullins? 02:17 - Did experts ever imagine wildfires could destroy a city like this? 04:06 - What is the meaning of urban conflagration? 06:32 - Could the Australian government have acted to avert the 2020 bushfires? 08:14 - Are authorities taking climate and fire warnings more seriously today? 09:13 - Could Australia face an urban fire like LA's, and what can we do to prevent it? 12:59 - Best way to unite fire services, councils, and property owners on fire prevention 18:43 - How is climate change making bushfires more extreme and unpredictable? 24:56 - How emergency services are gearing up for increasingly demanding fire events 28:22 - How is the insurance industry responding to rising bushfire threats? 32:40 - Can Australia’s construction sector keep up with rebuilding after bushfires? 34:39 - Is urban sprawl increasing fire and heat risks in Western Sydney? 38:44 - Best ways to fireproof homes in high-risk bushfire areas 43:48 - Should Australia strengthen its building codes for bushfire-prone areas? 46:13 - The dangers and long-term health effects of bushfire smoke 49:46 - Greg Mullins’ property dumbo About Our Guest: Greg Mullins AO, AFSM, is a veteran firefighter, climate advocate, and leader in emergency management. Serving nearly 14 years as Commissioner of Fire & Rescue NSW, he was the first to rise from the ranks to lead the agency, becoming its longest-serving chief in over a century. His expertise spans international bushfire management, emergency response coordination, and strategic leadership, including roles as President of the peak fire and emergency services council for Australia and New Zealand. After retiring in 2017, he rejoined the Rural Fire Service and was on the frontlines during the 2019–2020 Black Summer. Concerned about worsening climate-driven disasters, he founded Emergency Leaders for Climate Action, rallying former fire chiefs to push for urgent policy change. He continues to serve as a Climate Councillor and holds advisory roles shaping bushfire and emergency response strategies. His book, Firestorm, offers a firefighter’s perspective on the growing impact of climate change on natural disasters. From assembling elite teams at Ford Motor Company and Sun Microsystems to navigating the high standards of Bridgewater Associates, Steve Fitzgerald has honed the craft of leadership—yet every other day, you'll find him carving through fresh powder in the Rocky Mountains. As a seasoned HR leader, startup advisor, and board member, Steve has spent three decades weaving together people and profits, championing both efficient business outcomes and more fulfilling personal lives. In this episode, Ryan and Steve dive into the principles that have shaped Steve's unconventional career path, such as strategic leaps of faith and walking away from corporate safety in pursuit of authentic balance. They explore Ray Dalio's “pain plus reflection equals progress” outlook, offering tangible takeaways on how to welcome tough feedback, develop a growth mindset, and build teams that thrive on continuous practice.
In this episode of the Newcomer podcast, Eric Newcomer and Madeline Renbarger dig into all of the chaos in Washington led by Elon Musk and his team of young staffers. They push back on the attacks from the right at the press that revealing information about public employees is anything close to "doxxing," and unpack a16z's virtue signaling by hiring new right-wing cause celebrity Daniel Penny to its investing team. Later on, Eric breaks down the General Catalyst's a pitch to investors shapeshifting into a "company." If DEI proponents were being honest, they'd say, “We're going to bring in people that may not have traditional criteria or traditional resumes, but we're willing to take that risk with your life,” argues Victor Davis Hanson on this edition of “Victor Davison Hanson: In His Own Words.” After President Donald Trump's critics lashed out last week when he broached the idea that DEI hiring standards may have played a role in the disastrous midair collision over the Potomac River, a class action lawsuit surfaced, claiming that the Federal Aviation Administration turned away “1,000 air traffic controller applicants, solely based on their race,” reported Fox News. The FAA "disbanded a lot of university programs that encourage people with military experience or encourage people that had courses in scientific disciplines or mathematics or aeronautics, not to apply.” “The thing about DEI—what Trump brought up with the FAA—ask yourself something: If it's so good, why don't people just say that? Why don't they just say, we're willing to have collateral damage? We're going to bring in people that may not have traditional criteria or traditional resumes, but we're willing to take that risk with your life. They never say that.” For Victor's latest thoughts, go to: https://victorhanson.com/ Don't miss out on Victor's latest videos by subscribing to The Daily Signal today. SERIES 3 EPISODE 88: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Which one of these stories will you be talking about tomorrow? Remember when he said he’d be a dictator but only on day one? It’s day one. BEST JOKE OF THE YEAR: “The great thing about moving Trump’s inauguration to the rotunda,” writes Biden-Harris advance man Doug Landry, “is that all of his supporters already know how to get there.” CAPITULATION NATION: CBS is discussing settling the most nonsensical lawsuit Trump has ever filed because the settlement would be a wonderfully legal bribe. IT'S NOT A SURPRISE IMMIGRATION RAID if you tell everybody. These fascist morons couldn't stop boasting about their move against Chicago. Now it's almost off. RAMASWAMY GONE! Or as we called him, The Schwam: GONE! Hey, whaddya know, the Department of Government Efficient actually HAS cut waste! B-Block (32:39) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Rand Paul is so stupid he thinks running hoses out of the Pacific Ocean could've stopped the Firestorm. An actual major brand is introducing a new product and the catch phrase is "It's soup you can suck!" And Trump finds a new way to spray paint something that cheap flat gold color he loves while getting the name of one of his education employees wrong. C-Block (42:00) IN MEMORY OF BOB UECKER: The second worst thing about getting old – not VERY old, just old-old – is having to watch nearly all those older than you who, accepted in what was their field and then became theirs and yours – pass on. Especially when they are the widely beloved standard-setters of those fields like Bob Uecker.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
[Due to the relevance of this episode — and requests from listeners in LA — we decided to make this week the free episode.] We get into the crossover between the LA wildfires and the FIRE industry – finance, insurance, real estate. Where most people see a hellscape of risk and loss, the FIRE industry also sees a landscape of opportunity and profit. First are reports of landlords and investors never letting a good crisis go to waste as the latter jack up rents for people who need places to stay after losing everything, while the former snatch up burnt homes using the discounts code “devastation.” Second we then get into the simple narratives and material dynamics of how the insurance industry is dealing with the wildfire's aftermath by leaning into their victim complex while also hiking rates, restricting policies, denying claims, and agitating for regulatory changes. ••• We All Live in the Firestorm: Infinite Crisis and the LA Wildfires https://thetechbubble.substack.com/p/we-all-live-in-the-firestorm-infinite ••• Real Estate Vultures Eye Middle-Class Enclave of Ravaged LA https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-01-15/fire-ravaged-altadena-attracts-real-estate-vultures-eyeing-deals ••• Experts say Los Angeles rental prices will ‘inevitably' spike post-wildfires https://fortune.com/2025/01/11/los-angeles-rental-prices-will-inevitably-spike-post-wildfires-experts/ ••• The costly calamity in Los Angeles https://www.ft.com/content/1ada4ad5-d992-42a2-89d9-99063883f91d ••• L.A. Real estate is everything in Los Angeles. Karen Bass's absence from the city when the fires broke out, and now her seeming aloofness, has instantly made her look unfit for the job of mayor. Even Gavin Newsom is distancing himself from Bass. Meanwhile, while we wait on the facts behind the fires, all the Silicon Valley VC guys and Elon need to shut the f*** up. When Freedom is the Question… was published on September 10, and we had a book launch that night at our home-away-from-home, Pilsen Community Books, in conversation with Eve Ewing. We traveled to Women and Children First, Seminary Coop, The Wooden Shoe in Philadelphia, Book and Puppet in Easton, PA, Riff Raff in Providence, Firestorm in Asheville, NC, Red Emma's in Baltimore, Busboys and Poets in DC, the PIT (Property is Theft!!) in Brooklyn, and more. I read at public libraries, coffee shops, and Movement venues like Haymarket House, Hasta Muerte, and The James Connelly Social Club. A couple of the events were taped, one at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, NY where I was in conversation with the legendary thinker and activist Barbara Smith, co-author of the Combahee River Collective statement, and one at La Pena in Oakland where I was in conversation with Cat Brooks, organizer, activist, and KPFA radio host---Under the Tree will drop those spicy conversations in the future. I was honored and often awed to be in conversation with several other powerful comrades and dazzling friends: Lisa Lee, Danaka Katovich, Alice Kim, Damon Williams, Jacqui Lyden, Daniel Kisslinger, Martha Biondi, Adam Bush, James Michael MacDonald, Jeff Jones, Martha Swan, and more.
The San Jose State Spartans were preparing for another hopeful – but largely uneventful – women's volleyball season in 2024. But then a publication outed a player on that team as transgender and from there the protests and backlash grew seemingly by the day. Player lawsuits, coach accusations and boycott threats, and that was just from inside their own locker room. Soon teams all over the San Jose schedule decided to forfeit their matches, but also never gave an official reason why. So today, ahead of the Mountain West Conference Tournament, Katie Barnes joins us to quiet the noise and turn up the conversation on a team from San Jose that just wants to play the game.
