This week Matt Strott (Prawn: The Jumbo Shrimp) joins the ACP crew to discuss to be their own personal Golden Age of Comics. The issues, series, moments and creators in comics that crafted us and our reading habits, and a glorious look back at comics that make you smile (an exercise you should all do). Plus there's some great indie recommendations, advice and humour to start your comics week with a smile. Great stuff to check out this week - Matt Strott, Prawn: The Jumbo Shrimp, The Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes, Andy Capp, X-men, Marvel Comics, The New Teen Titans, The Death of Superman, GI Joe, Larry Hama, Eagle Comics, Battle, 2000AD, The Punisher, Jack Kirby, Groo the Wanderer, Usagi Yojimbo, Stan Sakai, Todd McFarlane, Spider-Man, Jason Pearson, Body Bags, Savage Dragon: Blood and Guts, Killraven, Micronauts, Glass City, Boxes, Drink and Draw, Brian Talbot, Steamroller Man, Lawless Comic Con 2024, Zoop, Kill All Monsters, Browner Knowle, Paul Ashley Browne, Superman: The Man of Tomorrow, She's Running on Fumes, Dennis Hopeless, John Callahan, Don't Worry He Won't Get Far on Foot, Do Not Disturb,
Episode 60 - Black Panther - The Story Thus Far This week we are going far back in Marvel history to take a look at the first appearance of the Black Panther, stopping for a bit in the 70s to see the arrival of Killmonger, and then finishing up with a look at Black Panther vol 3 from the late 90s. This Week In Comics Tom King and Peter Gross Team Up with BOOM! Studios for Animal Pound https://www.cbr.com/animal-pound-tom-king-peter-gross-boom-studios/ New on Marvel Unlimited this Week https://www.marvel.com/comics/calendar/week/2023-08-27 Recommendation: WHY WAKANDA MATTERS by Dr. Sheena C. Howard https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/692340/why-wakanda-matters-by-sheena-c-howard-phd/ This Week's Stack Fantastic Four #52 Jungle Action #6 Black Panther Vol 3 #1-12 (but mostly 9-12) Creator Profile: Christopher Priest 2 Minute Recap and Discussion Topics Fantastic Four #52 (and #53) The Panther starts out as a bad guy? Ben is really, really awful in these books. Sort of the designated racist of the FF. Duane learned a bit about Maximus, Medusa, Crystal and met Gorgon and Karnak for the first time The person without super powers – Wyatt Wingfoot – saves the day by freeing Johnny Storm and by extension the rest of the FF. Jungle Action #6 (and #7) Killmonger is angry from the start T'Challa is shown to be trapped between duties to two worlds There's a really cool page of maps - the Land of Wakanda and Central Wakanda included as the last page of this book McGregor and artist P. Craig Russell were behind the first interracial romantic kiss in mainstream comics, which happened in a 1975 Killraven story. Black Panther Vol 3 #1-12 Part of the Marvel Knights imprint. Somewhat confusing Storytelling in that the entire story is being told by Everett Ross to his boss (and partner Nikki – office of the chief of protocol) Some fantastic things happen across 12 books, Go to hell with Memphisto, get captured by Kraven the Hunter, Dealing with the White Wolf – a sorta half brother, saves an ex from death – Monica Lynne, has a run-in with the Avengers and defeats a guy trying to take over Wakanda while he's away. Oh and save his step-mother. Does seem like there was some additional context in books outside Black Panther – Captain America specifically? Apparently there's not. Art style is really interesting in this series. Especially given everything that happened. Really cool seeing the Avengers Incident issue (book #8) is drawn old school for the first 6 pages. P. Craig Russell deserves all the awards. Even with a more than a handful of Harveys, Eisners, and Inkpots to his name, he probably could be nominated every year and no one would blink an eye. From his very first Amazing Adventures run to the Killraven graphic novel; from inking Batman over Michael Golden and Jim Starlin pencils to the sword and sorcery Elric stories; from his acclaimed Night Music adaptations to his Sandman work; Craig never fails to delight and impress. If you know anything about opera, you know how impossible it seems to adapt Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle. But Craig did it with an award-winning a 14-issue comic series. He's one of the best, folks, so kick back, listen up, and enjoy the tales! _____________________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Marvel & DC have a long history with shirtless warriors, Killraven, Kamandi, Tor, Claw, Ka-Zar among the many who have struggled to stay relevant! Towering talents such as Neal Adams, Joe Kubert, Jack Kirby, John Buscema and more have contributed, trying to break the trend, with decidedly mixed results! The Struggle Is Real!! Plus - an update on the comic book marketplace!
THE BEGINNING OF THE END After a very important announcement regarding the podcast, Christopher Golden and Brian Keene recount Spider-Man's first encounter with Killraven in the post-apocalyptic Marvel Universe, from Marvel Team-Up issue 45.
It's the final Slaydown! Jack and Geoff have come to the end of 70's Marvel UK POTA mag's ill-advised attempt to graft an Apes narrative onto unrelated material, as the Apeslayer visits Yankee Stadium for his final adventure! The two marvel for the last time ever at an ape-faced crab monstrosity, a scantily-clad molecular biologist with a heart of gold, and the surprisingly-humiliating defeat of the title's best ape villain. Farewell Apeslayer; we hardly knew ye!
Alex Grand and Jim Thompson interview comic writer Don McGregor, in a second parter on his road to Black Panther, discussing how he moved from Warren Magazines to Marvel in the early 1970s, his first writing job with Gardner Fox, Amazing Adventures with Killraven with P. Today we're covering a crossover between the Defenders and the Guardians of the Galaxy. This episode is about the Badoon who are extraterrestrial Bad-Dudes from our first Guardians of the Galaxy Coverage back in Episode 14. We’ve got a Time Travel Team-Up for you that goes into excruciating detail about how terrible the Badoon are! Dramatis Personae: Protagonists Defenders -Dr. Strange - Stephen Strange -Hulk - Bruce Banner -Nighthawk - Kyle Richmond -Valkyrie -Aragorn Guardians of the Galaxy -Vance Astro - Vance Astrovik -Charlie-27 -Martinex -Yondu - Yondu Udonta -Starhawk Jack Norriss Antagonists Eelar - YESSSS!!!!!!! Brotherhood of the Badoon Zoms Hard to Judge but… Good Grief Sisterhood of the Badoon -Queen Tolaria Giant Size Defenders (1972) 5 “Eelar Moves in Mysterious Ways Hulk is a whole mood in these issues and I love it. I don’t normally enjoy Hulk so much but Steve Gerber has a really fun voice for him throughout Why… why are the Defenders fighting… fish? Hulk doesn’t know, but he’ll do it! Eelar is kinda rad looking, actually These goons straight up shank someone in the beginning of this issue, and that’s surprising Charlie-27 sure is a slab-o-beef Going into this, my prediction is that Nighthawk is Starhawk I actually really like that the spaceship falling from the sky isn’t hidden from anyone. All the time in these stories they act like no one notices these things, but in this issue everyone notices, is kinda alarmed, then goes about with life as usual… which seems way more realistic to me Dude! Is it ever explained why the fish are involved? This kid… I feel bad for him and want Valkyrie to punch his dad in the stomach real good once I like this Vance Astro costume a lot Gerry Conway’s art in this is quite dynamic Hulk Punch Fire, not Fish… I’m crying! Getting the band back together to Mess Eelar Up! Oh boy, this kid is gonna cause trouble Defenders (1972) 26 - “Savage Time” So, I gotta talk about this Valkyrie/Jack Norriss situation for a moment. There’s certainly backstory I’m missing but I feel terribly for everyone involved here. It honestly ripped me up reading this whole saga. I can’t imagine coming home one day and my wife legit didn’t know who I was. I’d probably act similarly to Jack here, honestly. Trying anything you can think of to spark a memory. At the same time Valkyrie is an entirely different person and has no memory. His forceful kiss is definitely line-crossing in very uncomfortable and bad ways… that said, again, were I in his shoes… It’s heartbreaking and tragic and I want the best for both of them and in 616, I just don’t expect it… All that said, Valkyrie is good peeps, she saves him without a second thought even after so remarkably uncomfortable a moment The Enterprise… I mean Captain America… nah, I mean Enterprise, is even more wrecked than it looked before and the News is covering it Oh man, an alien emerging from a space ship with a human kid… how are you still alive Martinex? Strange with the save! Major Vance Astro’s early recap is… pointed… at us… still… Humans raised as food, SNAP INTO A SLIM JIM! I had to go back to Two-in-One to see if Killraven was Wundarr. I’m still not sure, but refuse to google it Techno-Barrons is my new 80’s retro band Why is Aqua-Man in this issue? Dude, these Mercury dudes look Rad AF So… much… recap… Jack does need to back the heck off though The Enterprise is repaired and ready to head back to Stardate 1312.4 Defenders (1972) 27 - “Three Worlds to Conquer!” The Badoon are the worst Hulk is suspish of transport… AS HE SHOULD BE, DON’T YOU WATCH CGP GREY?!? Chill Jack, you still aren’t helping I kinda dig the half lizard half ape design here though Why is Valkyrie getting weaker? What the heck is happening? Woah… glowy person Planet of the Stereotypical 60’s Seriously, this issue has big Star Trek vibes I dig this robot design, and the bond between mama and babies Hulk don’t care though, HULK SMASH Dr. Strange-Tech is a thing I hope to see more if going forward So… how will it reveal that Nighthawk has become Starhawk? Oh good, it’s Denethor.... Wait, the Badoon Eliet Guard is 90% Zoms?!?! What the heck? Defenders (1972) 28 - “My Mother, the Badoon!” Excellent Opening Scene Hulk, I mean Charlie-27 SMASH So, Night enhances Nighthawks Powers? Cool! Will it enhance Starhawk’s powers though? How is this tied together? Digging future Nighthawk though Woah! Badoon Sisterhood City looks awesome At least we know the Badoon aren’t into corpse stabbing Techno-Bondage Hulk Action Figure! LOVING Super-Death Sweepstakes and ABSOLUTELY getting a Running Man vibe from it Yondu is one tough cookie The Badoon backstory is… yikes Starhawk is OUT Defenders (1972) 29 - “Let My Planet Go!” The Battle Royale between the Badoon and the Guardians and Defenders kicks off while Hulk and Yondu are still MIA Damsel is in distress and Hulk will SMASH (hyuck) Starhawk’s family is… normalish Hulk is indeed the strongest there is Hulk being teleported mid punch and absolutely leveling a Badoon is HILARIOUS slapstick comedy I really love how the battle royale begins at the start of the issue and just builds and builds throughout. It’s mostly just a fight issue but it’s so well done that it’s a ton of fun to read Strange and Jack to save the day! I’m starting to suspect that Nighthawk and Starhawk aren’t related That’s some cool eye-effect though with Starhawk Creators of these issues: Steve Gerber,Gerry Conway, Roger Slifer, Len Wein, Chris Claremont, Scott Edelman, Don Heck, Sal Buscema, Mike Esposito, Jim Mooney, Dave Hunt, Vince Colletta, Frank Giacoia, John Tartag, George Roussos, Irene Vartanoff, Glynis Wein, Al Wenzel, Dave Hunt, Artie Simek, Gaspar Saladino, Karen Mantlo, John Costanza, Joe Rosen, Len Wein, Marv Wolfman, Ron Wilson, Al Milgrom, Danny Crespi, Gil Kane, John Romita, Danny Crespi, Frank Giacoia, Gaspar Saladino Find us on Twitter @ArtifactsOfI and ArtifactsOfInfinity.com
In this episode your Planet 8 crew takes a look at the big one...the war to end all wars...we're talking War of the Worlds! This sci fi classic, first conceived by H.G. Wells, has been adapted to radio and film most successfully, as well as TV and comic books. We will focus on the two motion pictures, the first released in 1953, the other in 2005, but we'll touch on other adaptations too.Chief Engineer Bob gives us the lowdown on Wells' original novel and how it was adapted to a radio play by Orson Welles in 1938. Welles' broadcast caused hysteria across the country as people mistakenly thought the world was actually under attack by Martian invaders. Similar radio broadcasts of War of the Worlds occurred in other parts of the world too.A number of film-makers tried to bring War of the Worlds to the big screen but it was George Pal who succeeded in 1953. His film still looks brilliant, in large part due to the Martian war machines, with their sleek manta ray-like design. We'll talk about just why this film has such a strong visual impact, and we might go off on a tangent or two, but hopefully it will be entertaining!Next we take a look at Steven Spielberg's 2005 film, starring Tom Cruise. In some ways this adaptation was closer to Wells' novel, such as including the Martian tripods. The film also had scenes that paid homage to Pal's film. Di we love it? Like it? Well, listen and find out! Before we finish, Recon Officer Karen shares more War of the Worlds related stuff: the Tripods novels of John Christopher, and Marvel's Killraven comics. It's a Martianpalooza! We round it out with our Sensor Sweep, with Commander Larry sharing his newest treasure. This time it's a rather thick tome called The Fantasy Worlds of Irwin Allen by Jeff Bond, from Creature Features. Many of you will recall that Irwin Allen was the producer of Lost in Space, but he also was the man behind such TV shows as Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Time Tunnel, and Land of the Giants too. Allen also produced films, earning the title "The Master of Disaster" for such efforts as The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, and The Swarm. The book is filled with amazing photos and tons of info on all of Allen's projects. It's the perfect read for fans of his work. It's sold out on the Creature Features site, but you might check secondary sellers to see if you can find it. That's all for us this time. On Oct 30th, 1938, radio listeners got a special Halloween gift from a man who would become one of the greatest film-makers ever, Orson Welles. An adaptation H.G. Wells' 'War of the Worlds' aired -- and people were panicked! Just what you want on Halloween, right? I guess it depends on who you ask. It's a must-listen radio program. Grown Ass Men decided to revisit that historic radio program with Welles expert and friend of the show Jeff Ward. Jeff is a playwright, composer and actor and let's just say he's very knowledgable on this topic. We also revisit the Marvel Comics War of the Worlds starring the rather mundane Killraven. Check it out! Original Music by Adam Bernstein.

We're back after a brief hiatus, more information on the cause of which can be found in the epic rant I go on at the beginning of upcoming episode 17. In this Episode we cover Marvel's Amazing Adventures 30 Featuring Killraven from May of 1975. We discuss the fact that Marvel “catfished” us with Mint Julep on the cover leading us to believe the best character in the series returned only to have this issue be a flashback to Amazing Adventures 21 through 24: Killraven's Excellent Washington Adventure. Mark then discusses C2E2 and the books he picked up there. We go on to talk about our future plans and the books we plan to cover when we finish the Amazing Adventures run of Killraven. Finally our heroic hosts take on all these hot button issues while ignoring Cruz's dog which is skittering and squeaking his way through the episode. You can visit our website at www.comicbookdungeonpodcast.com and email us at comicbookdungeonpodcast@gmail.com we would love to hear how your lives were grayer without your pals Mark and Cruz and their talk about the Martian Apocalypse.

Mark is unnecessarily mean to Perfect Strangers, and Killraven is a complete Manic asshole in Marvel's Amazing Adventures from July of 1975. Email us at Comicbookdungeonpodcast@gmail.com

Mark begins by apologizing because his mic sounds like he dropped it in a toilet. The episode continues with a lengthy conversation about puking and moves to Cruz and Mark covering Amazing Adventures 23 from May of 1974 featuring Marvel's Killraven.
