97. Patriarchy, Jack Kirby, Fanta

In their long-awaited return, Phil & Jake rank patriarchy, the legendary comics creator Jack Kirby, and the soft drink Fanta on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Bully sticks really are made from beef penis. "Work for hire" is the situation that an illustrator like Kirby, or a session musician, might work under. He was paid cash for his work but didn't retain any ownership. At the time, the idea was that the work was ephemeral trash anyways; but now, years later, it's proven to be valuable. The Fourth World was Kirby's set of fantasy/science-fiction stories at DC. He got to do pretty much what he wanted and he went nuts with it. Mister Miracle was maybe the character that's most closely identified with Kirby. He's an escape artist refugee who lives in the suburbs and is married to an action heroine. Star Wars really seems to pull from Kirby's work. Doctor Doom is a very fun comic-book villain created by Kirby (and Stan Lee). Stan Lee worked with Kirby in the 1960s and co-created almost all of the early Marvel characters and stories with him. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay is an acclaimed novel by Michael Chabon where one of the characters is based (partly) on Kirby. Here's Kirby's original drawing of Captain America punching-out Hitler. The Banshees of Inisherin is a 2022 film partly about legacy that explores the question “Does being a decent person matter?” Thundarr the Barbarian was a 1980s cartoon about a post-apocalyptic adventurer. Kirby did some design work and by all accounts was paid fairly and treated well. Kamandi was a post-apocalyptic comic about the last boy on Earth, an Earth now populated by talking animals. It seems like it was heavily influenced by Planet of the Apes, even though Kirby hadn't seen the movie when he created the comic. Holy Mountain is a film directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky, financed partly by John Lennon, which is difficult to explain. It's surrealistic, absurd and mind-blowing, and it really seems Kirby-influenced. Kirby Krackle is a visual effect that Kirby was known for. If there was energy coursing through something, he might illustrate it with weird dots around it. The Neil Gaiman quote that Jake recites is from the book Kirby: King of Comics by Mark Evanier. O.M.A.C. (One Man Army Corps) is a truly bonkers comic written and drawn by Jack Kirby. It appears as if Glenn Danzig did know Kirby personally, and even worked with him. Here's an interview that Danzig conducted with Kirby. Mezzo Mix is totally the most normal thing in the world. We discuss Kit-Kats in Japan, which have been incredibly successful there, in part because their name sort of sounds like "good luck" in Japanese. There are many, many variations on the traditional Kit-Kat flavor in Japan. Some of these have come to America as well. The Fantanas ads were a throwback to an earlier style of ads. The premise is that sexy babes with soft drinks show up and refresh people. Here's a good example, and here's one in Spanish. Other sodas discussed include Crush, Orangina, Surge & Josta. Jake drank is half-Fanta at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando, which is near Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville. He paired it with some Old Florida Original Gourmet Chips. The fever has really passed on hard seltzer. Now that the dust has settled, in the cold light of day we can say it was ranked fairly. Calamari isn't good, it's just a rubbery mass. Hulk Hogan was a boring wrestler who's had a really negative impact on the world. Phil thinks Aerosmith are dire, just absolute bottom level garbage, and he's Phil has banned from his life with a zero tolerance policy. Phil & Jake are back to rank John Carpenter's 1986 film Big Trouble in Little China, the musical subgenre known as Bro-Country, and Baby Yoda on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: The kid in Madonna's Open Your Heart video isn't Leo Dicaprio, he's Felix Howard, who is now an A&R guy. Actors that we talk about include Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, Victor Wong, James Hong, Danny Trejo, He Huy Quan, Al Leong (here's his wedding announcement), Dennis Quaid, Harrison Ford, Jason Mantzoukas, Tom Cruise, Jackie Chan and Rodney Dangerfield. Other movies discussed include Everything Everywhere All at Once, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Overboard (which Phil thinks is really indefensible because Kurt Russell's character brainwashes Goldie Hawn's; “it's a Rapemantic comedy”), Minority Report, Dreamscape (filmed in Stockton, CA), Innerspace, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Golden Child, Friday, Caddyshack, The Matrix, Trading Places, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Flashdance, The Truman Show, The Wizard of Oz, Howard the Duck and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Jack Burton is a very influential protagonist, maybe even more so than Snake Plissken. He's sort of John Wayne as a buffoon. Bruce Willis' persona owes something to Jack Burton. If you want to hear an even more in-depth discussion of Big Trouble in Little China, check out this episode of the Blank Check podcast. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson owns the remake rights to Big Trouble in Little China and makes noises about a remake from time to time. John Carpenter's soundtrack (and especially the theme song) are a must-listen. Here's the New York Magazine article in which Jody Rosen first coined the term “Bro-Country.” Here's a history of the Country laundry-list song. Dr. Suess' pants with no one inside them are from the last story in the Sneetches book. “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line is maybe the ur-text of Bro-Country. Or– going further back– in could be either “Honky Tonkin'” or “Jambalaya” by Hank Williams. Other songs discussed by include “Big Green Tractor” and “Dirt Road Anthem” by Jason Aldean, “Sand in My Boots” by Morgan Wallen, “Jack & Diane” by John Mellencamp, “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” by Trace Adkins, “Dilemma” by Nelly w/ Kelly Rowland, “If That Ain't Country” by David Allan Coe, “That's My Kind of Night” by Luke Brian, “Friday” by Rebecca Black, “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” by Hank Williams Jr., “If You've Got the Money, I've Got the Time” by Lefty Frizzell, “Friends In Low Places” by Garth Brooks, “Tulsa Time” by Don Williams, “Boys Round Here” by Blake Shelton, “New Truck” by Dylan Scott, “Beer With My Friends” by Shy Carter, “Beer” and “Turned Up On the Weekend” by Branchez & Big Wet, “American Pie” by Don McLean, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick, and “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt. 95. Dungeons & Dragons, Sliced Bread, Harry Styles Re-Ranked

Melissa B. is back to help Phil, Jake & Jason rank the tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons and sliced bread on the List of Every Damn Thing. Plus we re-rank contemporary pop superstar Harry Styles. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Valley Fever, also called desert rheumatism, is a respiratory disease that's thought to be caused by shark scales. It's endemic to Central and Southern California. Dungeons & Dragons is a role playing game invented by Gary Gygax and many others. It's really broad and open-ended but is the most popular game in that genre. In the game, players assume the roles of characters who have fantasy-themed adventures. Dungeons & Dragons was also the name of a cartoon made in 1985 as a tie-in for that game. It was about a group of teens that got transported to a different world and became fantasy adventurers with magic weapons. It had a kind of Narnia vibe. Gary Gygax was the creator of Dungeons & Dragons, although he didn't create it alone, and it grew out of other, similar games. JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit which are foundational works in modern fantasy. Along with Conan, these books more or less created the genre/setting for Dungeons & Dragons. Alcoholics Anonymous is a mutual-aid group formed in 1935 in which members work together to help themselves recover from  alcoholism. Phil speculates that there are probably good AA Dungeons & Dragons games. Dice are polyhedral objects with numbers on the sides used to generate random numbers. The most commonly used dice are the six-sided dice you might use in a craps game or Monopoly or inside the Pop-o-Matic bubble of a Trouble game. Dungeons & Dragons requires different dice, 4-sided, 8-sided, 12-sided, 20-sided etc although now that Phil thinks about it, it's pretty unnecessary. With a few math changes, the game would work fine with 6-sided dice but people like to have that velvet dice sack. In prison, where dice are banned, Dungeons & Dragons players have to use other methods though. The Dungeons & Dragons movie looks like it has some pretty bad special effects, even for the time. Jeremy Irons appears to be having a fun time with it, though. SPOILER ALERT! Harry Styles plays Eros aka Starfox in Eternals. Popeye Village in Malta is just sitting there waiting for Jake. Here's the part from Popeye the movie where Bluto sees red. You don't want to know the cast of Cheers' ages when the show started. We talk a lot about movies where inanimate objects have personalities, including Pixar's Cars, The Brave Little Toaster, Disney's Beauty and the Beast and Toy Story. 93. Sleep, Peanut Butter, Sam Elliott

Phil & Jake rank the very necessary activity of sleep, the very American foodstuff called peanut butter, and the very mustachioed actor Sam Elliott on the List of Every Damn Thing.VOTE HERE to help decide which topic we're going to re-rank on an upcoming episode. Polls are almost closed! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: For the second time in recent episodes we discuss the songs of Chubby Checker (both "The Limbo Rock" and “Let's Twist Again”). I Know What You Did Last Summer was a post-Scream 90s horror movie. The title of the sequel was I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which Phil doesn't approve of. The Karina Longsworth podcast You Must Remember This had a recent episode about Flashdance & Risky Business as part of the current season which is about sex in movies (which used to be a thing).  Pittsburgh is a city in western Pennsylvania where the Allegheny & the Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio. Phil claims that old Popeye cartoons are much more Olive Oyl and Bluto-centric than you'd think. Some of the better Popeye cartoons aren't streamable because WB's not crazy about the themes. Phil's favorite is "Can You Take It" in which Olive gets a job as a nurse for an underground fight club. Thimble Theater was the original comic strip that Popeye sprung out of.  Freddy Krueger was a villain in horror movies in the 80s who attacks people in their dreams. Phil has only ever seen the third Nightmare on Elm Street, where Laurence Fishburne is an orderly at a hospital for traumatized kids and the kids flip the script on Freddy and defeat him. Phil mentions a French scientist who thought sleep was a distraction, and caused himself health problems by staying awake for long periods. This may have been something his parents told him as a kid to get him to sleep. He doesn't know why the scientist was French either. We talk about “sack hounds” and “sack artists”. Phil had always understood these to mean lazy people who could sleep wherever. After looking it up on WW2-era slang websites it seems like a “sack artist” is more like a womanizer whereas a “sack hound” is someone who tries to sleep. Beetle Bailey is a simple, gag-based comic strip with a military setting. Peanut butter is traditionally made of peanuts, smashed. That's why Phil's idea of selling roasted peanuts as extremely crunchy peanut butter makes sense. To Phil. Peanut oil is the oil that you can squeeze out of peanuts. In peanut butter jars, it separates and has to be stirred back into the peanut butter. What? You think it'd be better to just have a jar of peanuts so that the oil will stay put? Yeah me too! Almond butter is mashed-up almonds. The Got Milk? ad campaign which emphasized milk's usefulness as a lubricant, was kicked off by a Michael Bay-directed ad in which a guy has jammed so much PB&J into his mouth that he can't say "Aaron Burr" to win a radio contest. It's a very common problem. George Washington Carver invented about three hundred products derived from peanuts, but did not invent peanut butter. Peanuts are legumes that are eaten as food in the world and are especially popular in the USA, Nigeria and Thailand. Phil used to work with someone who was Thai and she said that Americans all eat rancid peanuts in contrast to Thailand where they eat fresh ones. We're afraid she might be right! Phil went looking for pics of Lucy Pinder to link to and found this which is an NFT of a picture of her. We hope she gets a cut of this. Realizing that Lucy Pinder is a real person has taught Phil empathy. Boiled peanuts are a fantastic Southern food. They come in a wet paper bag (the kind that so many people have trouble fucking their way out of). Sam Elliott was on the Mission: Impossible TV show back in the early 1970s. He looked good even without the mustache.  We talk about a few movies, including The Big Lebowski, Power of the Dog, Young Guns and Tombstone. We also talk reflect on the Western and superhero movie genres in general. Here's the Sam Elliott episode of WTF with Marc Maron. Malk was the name of an alternative milk in a gag on the Simpsons from 1995. It's now a real product. The police departments got final approval of what was included in the show but it was educational to see what police thought made them look good.  District Attorneys are adjacent to cops, but aren't exactly cops. Training Day is a movie about Denzel Washington as a bad cop. Columbo is TV good cop who is completely non-violent and walks around being an unassuming disheveled genius and catching rich people who do murders. Lethal Weapon is a movie about two cops, one of whom is a "Lethal Weapon" because he's suicidal. Die Hard is a movie about an off-duty cop and an on-duty cop (who shot a child while on duty) learning to trust each other. Beverly Hills Cop a movie about a cop from Detroit who goes to Beverly Hills and puts a banana in the tailpipe of cops there. Movie cops are always good or at least necessary. England is a country where cops don't carry guns. We discuss gun ownership. In the USA, 3 in 10 adults say they own a gun. It's something like 40% of men and 20% of women. RoboCop is another movie about cops in which the police force has been privatized. It's fantastic and Ronny Cox from Beverly Hills Cop is fantastic in it as Dick Jones. The Pinkertons were founded as a sort of private police force to crush labor. Rod Lavers shoes are Adidas sneakers named for the great Australian tennis star Rodney Laver. The Australian Open is played in an arena named for him as well. They're fantastic shoes but the best ones are white and it's hard to keep them clean. Firefighters are people who fight fire. When Phil imagined a fire that hated firefighters he was thinking of a little stinker like this guy. Clowns are people trying to make other people laugh. Commandos are special military units. Theodore Roosevelt was a US President and an extremely colorful character who's personally responsible for a lot of death and pain.  The Last Starfighter was a nice little movie that's somehow never been remade. It's about a kid in a trailer park who, by virtue of being good at video games, gets recruited into an interstellar war. Howard the Duck is a movie about a duck who falls in love with Lea Thompson. Capitalism is the system we live in that makes ethical consumption impossible. Middle school is a necessary evil, a place to put young teens. Gambit is a fictional character, a superhero and member of the X-men. He wears a long trench coat and a weird thing on his head. Hoarders is a TV show in which the pain and mental illness of real people is mined for cheap thrills.  Steven Seagal is a movie star who's been credibly accused of sexual assault and has incredibly accused himself of being a yogi, a holy man, a secret agent, a Navy SEAL & a martial arts master. The British Royal Family are pretty bad. Jon Voigt had been really good in a lot of films. He's as low as he is almost entirely because he said some stuff Phil & Jake didn't agree with. Phil even liked his accent in Anaconda. Jenny McCarthy is pretty low on the list because she has some trash opinions. 48 Hrs. was followed by a sequel, Another 48 Hours. The second sequel, 127 Hours, is a big departure for the franchise. Flashdance is probably underrated by us. Karina Longworth went into why in a recent episode of You Must Remember This. ALSO DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE:Insane Clown Posse * speed limits * Hank Williams, Jr. * jorts * Bell Biv Devoe * mini-trucks * Warner Brothers large-graphic cartoon t-shirts * water parks * “Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit of…)” by Lou Bega * Spinderella * Bend, OR * Mendocino County * moongazing * meditation * backpacking * Spice Girls * Pee-Wee Herman * Donald Duck * goatsBelow are the Top Ten and Bottom Top items on List of Every Damn Thing as of this episode (for the complete up-to-date list, go here).TOP TEN: Dolly Parton - person interspecies animal friends - idea sex - idea bicycles - tool coffee - beverage Clement Street in San Francisco - location Prince - person It's-It - food Doctor Doom - fictional character Cher - person BOTTOM TEN:283. cops - people284. For the record, Jim Davis denied that's what was going on. Discussion of portrayals of cats in popular culture leads to some talk about Tom and Jerry and much talk about Heathcliff (the Original Orange Cat). Phil was wrong about the name of the Garfield convention, it's called the Garfield Gathering. It should be called The Garfering. The next one is May 20th, 2022 in Warwick, Rhode Island. They don't happen every year so don't miss your chance. Garfield Minus Garfield were some edits people made in which Garfield was removed. Phil mentions the very grounded and realistic Garfield without his thought balloons. Beetle Bailey is singled out by Phil as a good gag strip Olivia James took over drawing the comic strip Nancy a few years ago and it's been a breath of fresh air. The old Ernie Bushmiller strips are extremely good also.  Garfield: His 9 Lives was a very strange Garfield project in the 80s. When talking about historical tax jubilees, Phil didn't really understand the mechanics too well but in Leviticus, God tells the Hebrews to forgive debts and free slaves every 50 years. It's unclear how this worked in practice. The idea wasn't unique to Hebrews, there are also records of jubilee proclamations in Babylon & Egypt. Her upcoming book The Dead Are Gods will be published by Melville House. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: The Spice Girls are, of course: Victoria Adams aka Victoria Beckham aka Posh Spice, Geri Halliwell aka Ginger Spice, Melanie C aka Sporty Spice, Mel B aka Scary Spice and Emma Bunton aka Baby Spice. Was there a sixth Spice Girl? Kind of. Michelle Stephenson was briefly part of the group that would go on to become the Spice Girls. At the time of this writing, we can't provide a link to Lady Camden from Ru Paul's Drag Race because it would risk spoiling the season finale for ourselves. Lucy Pinder is, as Wikipedia tells us, a British actress, TV personality and former glamour model. Shes also joins Eirinie for going on "holiday" (aka vacation). Phil at some point got it into his head that she was a right-wing ideologue and it broke the spell she had over him. It's probably for the best, even if it wasn't true! We talk about the Spice Girls songs “Wannabe” and “2 Become 1”. The video featuring them in leather outfits is for the song "Say You'll Be There". 2 Live Crew are filthy Miami rappers who legally laid the foundation for all filthy rappers that followed. Mogul did an excellent series about them. We get into a little Chubby Checker discussion, including his songs “The Twist” and “Let's Twist Again”. Phil tells us about Don't Knock the Twist , is a movie that features Checker with a lot of associated acts including Dee Dee Sharp, who sings Mashed Potato time, one of Phil's favorites. Phil likes anything where the song tells you "It's the latest" or "it's the greatest" and Mashed Potato time does both. Robbie Williams is the cheeky chappie from Stoke. Harry Styles is Hazza? Dolly Parton is the Backwoods Barbie. Hank Williams is the Hillbilly Shakespeare. Phil mentions the 2013 Morgan Spurlock 3-D documentary about One Direction, This Is Us but then gets confused as to whether it exists or not. It does. Phil mentions the youtube video "A Scouser Tries The Wigan Kebab and Smack Barm Pea Wet" in which a guy from Liverpool travels 17 miles to Wigan to enjoy Smack Barm Pea Wet which is a roll with a potato that's been batter dipped and deep fried, served with the liquid that peas sit in.  Turkey Twizzlers were a UK meat product that used to be served to children at schools until celebrity chef Jamie Olive raised a fuss about them. Bovril is a beef broth concentrate, formerly known as Johnston's Fluid Beef. Phil remembers a guy saying it's served hot in a disposable cup. Kit-Kat is a candy that originates in England but really hit its stride in Japan where they make many variant flavors and generally appreciate the brand. Lucozade is a sports drink, roughly akin to Gatorade that was originally sold at pharmacies. Kebab stands are places where you can buy kebabs. Phil said we don't really have them in America but it's not really true. In his old neighborhood in Queens they were all over. Phil mentions a shocking ad for breakfast in a can he saw in a lad mag. He was unable to find images because when people are preserving and scanning lad mags, their priority is the photos of Lucy Pinder or Lucy Collett and then when that's done they'll eventually get around to the horrifying pictures of canned sausage and eggs. The product was probably Hunger Breaks' All Day Breakfast. There was a musical made about their lives. Aida is a Verdi opera, first performed in Cairo in 1871. Of course Phil pronounced it wrong. What did you expect?! During the episode Jake drinks a Picnic Lightning by Brouwerij West. It's a top-notch Hazy IPA. Shop ‘n' Wash was a laundromat & convenience store in Ukiah, CA. It's name is pure description, zero wordplay. Phil feels that laundromats should have some wordplay in their names eg "Get the Funk Out"  "Escamoles" or "Mexican caviar" are ant eggs eaten as food by adventurous eaters like Micah. Phil referred to Shackleton's Endurance as Sir Edmund Hillary going to the North Pole in the Perseverance. The wreck of Endurance was just discovered in March of 2022! "The Ride" by David Allan Coe is a 1983 country song about an encounter with the ghost of Hank Williams while hitchhiking from Montgomery, AL to Nashville, TN. Phil mentions Plagues and Pleasures on The Salton Sea, a documentary about the area. It's a very strange place both culturally and geologically. Lighting (episode) strikes again as Phil & Jake rank The Twilight Zone media franchise, plastic straws, cochlear implants, mocha lattes, ants, belly button lint, hitting rock bottom and former U.S. President Barack Obama on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We mentioned several episodes of the original Twilight Zone TV series, such as It's a Good Life and Mirror Image. We didn't mention After Hours which is fantastic. The Twilight Zone 80s reboot has one really good episode "Button, Button" which we think was made into a movie. The way it works is a guy gives you a button to keep for a month and if you press the button you get a million dollars.  The Twilight Zone Jordan Peele reboot was OK but too long. The right amount of time for something like this is under 30 minutes.  Here's some of the Twilight Zone episode with Buster Keaton. There's a lot of jokes about the differences between the 1890s and the 1960s that don't really hit in 2022. William Shatner bugs out in a Twilight Zone episode. A couple decades later, John Lithgow bugs out in a reboot of it from The Twilight Zone: The Movie. “You know, for kids” is one of our favorite things. Sound of Metal is a great movie about deafness. You should watch it. We don't mention it in the episode, but Coda is also a great movie about deafness (and especially deafness as culture). You should watch it too. Cyborgs is short for "cybernetic organism". Phil has a very loose definition of cyborgs that his family doesn't agree with. Phil claims that not only is someone with a pacemaker a cyborg but also someone with glasses, a cell phone or shoes. Phil claimed that The Ants won E.O. Wilson the Pulitzer prize but he was actually thinking of Tales from the Ant World. Leiningen and the Ants is a 1938 short story you probably remember from school here's the full text but, I hasten to add, it's of (looks left and right) dubious legality. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a former wrestler and current movie star, his second most famous move was the Rock Bottom. Here are ten examples of him performing the move. Phil had it confused with the People's Elbow, which goes off the turnbuckles. The Rock Bottom is what's called a "side slam". Here's the Between Two Ferns with Obama. For the second episode in a row, Gingerdead Man (starring Gary Busey) finds its way into our conversation. “Roadie Friday” is the day before the day off on tour. Friday is a state of mind. TGI Fridays was a really revolutionary idea when it first came about. The premise was that it was a bar that women would feel comfortable visiting. The bar in the movie Cocktail where Tom Cruise recites poetry is based on TGI Fridays. Freaky Fridays are when you switch bodies with your parent. Freya is the mother of Thor and Friday is named for her the way Thursday is named for him. Here's DJ Pooh running and crying. Def Comedy Jam was a show on HBO where urban comedians could perform. The most famous set ever was probably Bernie Mac's first appearance but Chris Tucker's was really good too.  Phil was wrong here, there is no "other Chris Tucker". Deebo Samuel plays football for the San Francisco 49ers. Deebo is not his legal name but he confirms that it came from the movie Friday. We note how great Friday's soundtrack is, with songs like “Keep Their Heads Ringin” by Dr. Dre, “Friday” by Ice Cube & “Hoochie Mama” by 2 Live Crew. Jake compares Friday to two of his favorite books Cannery Row & Tortilla Flat (both by John Steinbeck). He also compares it to his new favorite TV show to insist everyone watch: Blindspotting (it's on Starz so you'll have to get a promotional subscription and binge the show within a month). Other songs discussed include “Little Saint Nick” by The Beach Boys, “American Pie” by Don McLean & “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick. Jason sincerely apologizes for unknowingly dead-naming Cara Cunningham. Here's the 2021 hyperpop remix of “Friday” featuring Big Freedia and others. And keep on eye out for upcoming shows by his bands Death By Stereo, Voodoo Glow Skulls and Manic Hispanic! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: The only ICP song we really discuss is (of course) “Miracles”. The Great Milenko is a devil figure in the Juggalo cosmology - "According to the group's mythology, The Great Milenko is a necromancer and illusionist who tries to trick individuals into greed and other such sins. He takes out the worst in an individual and creates powerful illusions in an attempt to cause them to become hedonistic and greedy. An honorable individual must fight his magic in order to make it to Shangri-La." Horrorcore is a genre that was a big deal in the 90s. It's pretty much what it sounds like. Horror-inflected rap music. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony were initially extremely horrorcore. They had a song called "Hell Sent" about invading hell and killing demons. Looking back now it was inescapable, from the Geto Boys ("Chuckie") to Ice-T ("pulse of the rhyme") to the Gravediggaz ("1-800-Suicide"). It's one of those things you don't realize is everywhere until years later when it's gone. American Juggalo is a great short film about the Gathering of the Juggalos. You should watch it. Busey movies discussed include The Buddy Holly Story, Point Break, Under Siege and The Gingerdead Man. We also talk about his appearances on such reality TV shows as I'm With Busey, Celebrity Rehab and Gary Busey Pet Judge. The Rock is Phil's favorite 90's action movie. People get it confused with Con Air but it's much better. All three stars (Connery, Harris and Cage) go all-out. Jake Busey is Gary Busey's son, he looks like his dad. Starship Troopers is a Paul Verhoeven film loosely based based on the film of the same name by Robert Heinlein. It's maybe the best anti-war movie of the past 50 years but the general public really showed their ass by missing the point. Is Gary Busey in Lethal Weapon? You bet your ass he is. Pod-Bucks are how Phil and Jake get paid for making this podcast. A Pod-Buck is kind of like a No-Prize but without the envelope. Actors that we discuss include Tom Berenger, Ellen Barkin, Joe Pantoliano, James Franco, Michael Paré, Rick Springfield, Gary Oldman, Dan Aykroyd and Bob Saget. Many musical acts come up during the episode, such as Bruce Springsteen, Dion and the Belmonts, My Chemical Romance, Damaso Perez Prado, Aerosmith, Ice Cube, Spinderella, Bell Biv Devoe and Chris Gaines.  We talk about how The Doors were used as an inspiration for Eddie and the Cruisers, but we fail to draw the connection that there were also rumors about Jim Morrison faking his death. Songs discussed include  “On the Dark Side” by John Cafferty (which is from the movie), “Quarter to Three” by Gary U.S. Bonds (maybe Phil's favorite song of the 20th century), “Project Chick” by Cash Money Millionaires, “Kokomo” by the Beach Boys, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cindi Lauper and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dione Warwick. Phil mentions a song from the movie called “Special Touch” but the actual name of the song is “Down On My Knees” (also by John Cafferty). Phil's right when he says it sounds like “Hurts So Good” by John Mellencamp. Other movies discussed include That Thing You Do!, West Is West, Streets of Fire, Jersey Boys, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Howard the Duck, Caddyshack, The Matrix, The Truman Show, Drumline, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Exorcist, All of Me, Ghost, Ghost Rider, Ghostbusters, Evil Dead 2, Repossessed, R.I.P.D., The Frighteners and of course Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives! Streets of Rage is the arcade game Phil mentioned that uses the common trope of a power up of a whole roast chicken that makes the player regain his health. The Palace of Depression was a real place in Vineland, New Jersey. Jake claims that Eddie and the Cruisers used the actual site as a shooting location, though the internet implies that it was razed in 1969 so maybe the one from the movie was a recreation. Jake calls meals_by_cug a Jersey guy but it looks like he's from Staten Island. We refer to our episode featuring Dave Hause, in which we go over Dave's USA Today piece about Taylor Swift and master tapes. Here's the scene from The Simpsons where Bart tries to buy a novelty license plate. Brian WIlson had a nervous breakdown when he heard the Beatles' Revolver. Sleep paralysis is the worst. Jake cites Scottish folklore that attributes it to a witch sitting on your chest. We couldn't trace the story to Scotland, but we did discover the night hag, which isn't too far off the mark. We don't actually get into the movie, but Silverado is an 80s neo-traditional Western by Lawrence Kasdan with a stacked cast that Phil's never seen, and is the one movie that Phil will never be invited over to Jake's house to watch. That is, if you're reading this on the day the episode was released. If not, then either happy belated birthday, or happy early birthday for next year. You choose. This was the first joke Phil's son was able to pull off: "What's green and smells like blue paint? Green paint!" He's still working on our new favorite: "What's the secret to telling a good joke timing." Therapy in the future will be Phil's son going into a VR experience where a Pokemon-branded A.I. therapist goes through his father's social media and podcasts and then administers a virtual medication. Other pop stars discussed include Avril Lavigne, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Cher and Prince. We also talk about non-Pop musicians like Klaus Nomi, Bruce Springsteen. “Weird Al” Yankovic, Charli XCX, Hank Williams and the Ramones. We get into so many Britney songs: “...Baby One More Time”, “Gimme More”, “Work Bitch”, “Radar”, “Unusual You”, “Until the World Ends” (featuring Nikki Minaj & Ke$ha), “Oops I Did It Again”, “Toxic” and her rendition of Sonny & Cher's “The Beat Goes On”. Jake recommends this Mystery Show podcast episode about Britney (though he incorrectly attributes it to the podcast Invisibilia). Phil mentions the Netflix show This Is Pop. The third episode "Stockholm Syndrome" discusses Max Martin's team in Sweden, and one producer explains the piano-playing finger formation the he dubs “hit claw” (which was used to create "...Baby One More Time"). Here's the “Toxic” remix from the Promising Young Woman soundtrack, and here's the mash-up with the B-52s' “Love Shack”. Phil was familiar with Rolling Stone cover featuring Britney with a Teletubby, but had never noticed the Teletubby. The documentary about Britney's conservatorship (and the #freebritney movement) that we refer to is Framing Britney Spears. Here's Britney being interviewed by Michael Moore for Fahrenheit 9/11. We don't even mention that Dan Aykroyd plays Britney's character's dad in the movie Crossroads! Fear not, the saga of bread & butter pickles controversy does continue in this episode. Here's Britney & Justin Timberlake's denim outfits. Marrisa's right, kefir is very similar to yogurt. Other types of alternative milks discussed include almond milk, soy milk, oat milk and coconut milk. We talk about a lot of different iconic leather jacket looks, including those of Indiana Jones, Marlon Brando, Danny Zuko, Arthur Fonzerelli, Eddie Murphy, Ford Fairlane, Blade and The Matrix. We couldn't find any evidence of what Jake calls a “snowy river jacket” ever appearing in The Man from Snowy River. 83. Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Fireworks, Wind

Friend-of-the-pod Donovan is back to help Phil and Jake rank John Hughes' classic film Ferris Bueller's Day Off, fireworks, and the meteorological phenomenon known as wind on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: One of our tweets got a like from DC the Brain Supreme of Tag Team, who of course brought you “Whoomp! (There It Is)”. Here's the Geico commercial where they do a new ice cream-themed version of the song. We just realized DC shouts “Sprinkles!” at the end of the commercial, which probably has something to do with why he liked our tweet for the episode in which we rank cake sprinkles. When Phil said there was a woman who calls herself Jessica Rabbit, he was referring to Melyssa Ford, who is a model who used to be in a lot of rap videos.  Naturally, we talk a lot about movies, including other works by director John Hughes (Home Alone, The Breakfast Club) and many of the films that are already on the List of Every Damn Thing (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Caddyshack, The Matrix, Trading Places, The Truman Show, Drumline, Star Wars). War Games is another movie where Matthew Broderick uses a computer to change his grades. There's also Career Opportunities, the last Hughes teen comedy. It's not discussed much except by creeps who remember it mostly for the scene where Jennifer Connelly rides a hobby horse. The Prestige is the best Christopher Nolan movie, it's about rival Victorian magicians & about doubles, doppelgangers, brothers, etc. The best part is when Hugh Jackman's character hires an actor that resembles him to be half of the magic trick. The second best part is whenever Michael Caine opens his mouth. John Mulaney is a well-known stand-up comedian from suburban Chicago who kind of seems like Ferris Bueller. He was a writer for Saturday Night Live. Phil might have been confused as usual when he was talking about Abe Froman being the name of the character in the Palm Beach Story. He's called "the Weenie King" and he's a rich old man who knows where to buy meat cheap. Rampage was a video game where you can control one of three giant monsters that destroy a city. When they're defeated they turn back into naked humans. It was adapted into a movie starring Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson.  The painting that Phil mentioned was Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte which is at the Art Institute of Chicago. It was the inspiration for the musical Sunday in the Park with George, which Phil's never seen. Of course we devote time to the Sport-o's, Motorheads, Geeks, Sluts, Bloods, Wasteoids, Dweebies and Dickheads. We went over the crimes of Jeffrey Jones in our Howard the Duck episode, in case you care to learn more. The Ferris Bueller sitcom was on TV at the same time as Parker Lewis Can't Lose but didn't last as long because it presumably sucked. Ferris Bueller's Day Off gave the song “Oh Yeah” by Yello a real boost. Does Donovan think the NYPD is giving him Havana syndrome? No, but that doesn't mean he trusts them. We briefly discuss dog suicide. If you're having suicidal thoughts, call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255. Phil mentions the Simpsons episode “The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show”, maybe his favorite episode. It includes a short cartoon called The Beagle Has Landed in which Itchy and Scratchy are on their way to the fireworks factory but are interrupted by Poochie, who introduces himself by rapping. They never go to the fireworks factory. Jake tells a Warped Tour story about Rusty Pistachio from the band H2O flexed on some dudes from an unnamed mediocre punk band who were shooting very lethal fireworks very close to Jake and his friends. Smith Puget gets quite a lot of well-deserved compliments in the episode. The “little man” is the system used by the San Francisco Chronicle to review movies. Instead of stars there are pictures of a man in one of five positions: clapping wildly and jumping out of his seat, clapping, sitting attentively, asleep, or the dreaded empty chair. They should probably make some more specific ones like the guy's face is melting off because the movie is too trippy or he's eating a movie theater hot dog. The “Sonoma Aroma” is a phenomenon in which, on some days, in some parts of Sonoma County, California, there will be a smell of cow manure in the air. Phil and Jake are joined once again by Andy Granelli (The Distillers, Seized Up) to pump up the sandwich bandwidth by ranking the grilled cheese sandwich, the tuna melt, and the turkey / bacon / swiss sandwich on the List of Every Damn Thing.Find Andy on Twitter (@AndyGranelli) and Instagram (AndyGranelli). If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Phil claims that cat names don't really matter because cats are mostly called "kitty" anyways and they're indifferent to any name you give them. You should just name your cat a word that you enjoy saying into the air. The Marvel superhero Wolverine will sometimes go undercover by wearing an eyepatch and calling himself “Patch”. This strains credulity because he has the most distinctive hairstyle ever. It's almost as if it's not real. Lots of other types of sandwiches and sandwich-type foods come up in the course of this episode, including cheese sandwiches, melts, quesadillas, crab sandwiches and of course shit on a shingle. The various sandwich fixins that get discussed include rye bread, pickles, onion rings, shredded lettuce and the delicious mouth-wrecking Dutch crunch bread. The grilled cheese sandwich that Jake made in preparation for this episode was Atika cheese from Tomales Farmstead Creamery on Josey Baker Country Bread. He made it in his Breville air-frying toaster oven.  For the record, ”Atika” means “two” in the language of the Coast Miwok people (Jake couldn't remember the name of this local Native Bay Area tribe). Robert's Western World in Nashville is Jake's favorite place to get a grilled cheese sandwich. The grill is right there behind the bar, and they totally don't do the grilled cheeses on the same grill where they do the meat. In-N-Out grilled cheese (animal style) is usually pretty good too if it's fresh off the grill, and Waffle House's ain't bad in a pinch either. The place in New York City that specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches seems to now be a national chain called Melt Shop. We shout-out some other sandwich purveyors during the episode, such as Nick's Rockaway in Pacifica, CA, the Adeline Market deli in Burlingame, CA, The Bottle Shop in Ukiah, CA, and Woodhouse Fish Company & Molinari Delicatessen in San Francisco. Main Street Wine & Cheese– also in Ukiah, which is itself of course in Mendocino County– is sadly now either a taqueria or a Quizno's. Jake couldn't remember the fancy French-derived word for an open-faced sandwich. It's “tartine”. Recipe websites are some of the worst because to game search engines they put the recipes down below and don't let you just scroll to the bottom. They then put a long story about themselves at the top and a lot of javascript ads so that when you're trying to make the recipe, the content keeps moving. It's awful and they should be ashamed. SFgate.com is similarly maddening. We continue the ongoing bread & butter pickle controversy that Jade Puget started back in Episode 78. Tuna on pizza is very good, it gets crispy! Here's an example on a recipe website that's not that bad. Are magic erasers made from crab shells? No they're not. Phil was wrong again! Steve1989MREinfo is the guy Phil mentioned who unboxes old (sometimes extremely old) military rations and eats them. Canadians wear poppies on Remembrance Day (November 11th). Tulip mania is a classic case– maybe the classic case– of a speculative bubble. It's been thoroughly documented elsewhere but Phil enjoyed the movie Tulip Fever which takes you inside the tulip futures auctions in a way an economics textbook can't do. Hetch-Hetchy water is the best water. People who live in San Francisco get it right out of their taps. All the news article headlines about Andy's bandmate Chuck Platt getting hit by a car cite his other band, not Seized Up (the one he's in with Andy). We're glad to hear Chuck is recovering nicely. We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Phil talks about how he uses antiquated stoner terminology to describe the workings of asthma inhalers. It's not that he's committed to the stoner lifestyle but that they have the best terms for describing things like that. "This albuterol is cashed." "You can have green hit on this Xopenex." Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn starred in Foul Play which is pretty good and is set in San Francisco. When Phil lived in NYC he was homesick and made it a point to watch movies set in SF. Jake surmises the name of the movie is Lucky Chances Casino, which is the name of a Bay Area casino. We talk about a lot of Bill Murray movies, including Caddyshack, Meatballs, Stripes, Ghostbusters, The Razor's Edge, Little Shop of Horrors, Ghostbusters 2, Groundhog Day, Quick Change, Mad Dog and Glory, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Lost in Translation and Where the Buffalo Roam (which is the one we couldn't remember the name of, where he plays Hunter S. Thompson). We also discuss Scrooged, which screenwriter Michael O'Donoghue considered his greatest work. It was directed by Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon, Superman, the Twilight Zone episode where William Shatner sees a gremlin on the side of the plane) who had much broader sensibilities. "We wrote a fucking masterpiece. We wrote It Happened One Night. We wrote a story that could make you laugh and cry. You would have wanted to share it with your grandchildren every fucking Christmas for the next hundred years. The finished film was a piece of unadulterated, unmitigated shit." Bill Murray voiced the titular role in the Garfield movie (and the sequel Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties). He agreed to do it because he saw it was written by Joel Cohen and thought it was Joel Coen (who made– with his brother– Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, the Big Lebowski, Hudsucker Proxy and Fargo).  The documentary that Jake watched about Murray's real-life antics is called The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned from a Mythical Man.  Bill Paxton rules as Chet in Weird Science. Bruce Springsteen wrote “Hungry Heart” for the Ramones and “Because the Night” was written for Patti Smith. Shipley's Donuts is a Houston-based donut chain that Phil only knows about from the Houston airport.  On top of reciting the regular the Pledge of Allegiance every day, Ching's kids also have to pledge allegiance to the Texas state flag. In addition, they have to sing “Deep in the Heart of Texas” for their school show (when they should be singing “California Love” by 2Pac & Dre). Johnny Dang is a Houston-based Jeweler known for making absurd grills. He's the Houston equivalent of Jacob the Jeweler. We rattle off a lot of important names in Texas music, including under-recognized Outlaw Country pioneer Billy Joe Shaver, rap legends Geto Boys, post-hardcore punk visionaries At the Drive-In, and Queen of Tehano Selena. Texas-inspired songs mentioned include “Waiting for a Train” by Jimmie Rodgers, “El Paso” by Marty Robbins, “Luckenbach Texas” by Waylon Jennings and “Amarillo By Morning” by George Strait. We discuss many locations on the map of Texas, such as Houston, El Paso, South Padre Island and Hill Country.Jake mentions the film subgenre Texas Noir, of which No Country for Old Men is a good example. Even though they're crime-related movies set in Texas, it's probably a stretch to include Bonnie & Clyde and Bottle Rocket in this category. Stephon Marbury was the real-life inspiration for the character of Jesus Shuttlesworth in He Got Game. He's kind of nuts and got the Knicks to buy him out of his contract by eating vaseline on camera. Whoa the villain in Steel is Judd Nelson! Ex-NBA player Sam Casell used to pantomime having freakishly large testicles (similar to Buster  Gonad's) as a celebration. Here's Shaq chillin' with The General. And here's DJ Deisel. We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Jake instructs listeners to send collectible clown figurine intel on to Jason on Instagram (@rehog), but it's probably better to tweet at him (@JasonMarmor) since you can't post links on IG. As he mentions in the episode, years ago when Phil was unemployed he saw an ad on Craigslist looking for a man to sit on balloons and pop them. This is a fairly common kink it turns out. It's a big world! Professional wrestling personalities mentioned include Hulk Hogan, Miss Elizabeth, Sensational Sherri, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig, The Rockers, The Rock, Rowdy Roddy Piper and New Jack. When Phil says “Vince” he's of course talking about Vince McMahon. Slim Jims still feature Randy Savage in their marketing! Phil refers to them as “beef jerky” but they're made out of chicken. Here's an awesome remix of the “Art thou bored?” commercial that Jake loves so much. Dexters's Lab was a cartoon in the 90s about a genius boy. He had a pet monkey that often had his own adventures in a superhero milieu, including this episode w/ Randy Savage, which draws heavily from an old Ben Grimm (aka The Thing) comic book. The American Dream's Hard Times promo is just a fantastic piece of work. Macho Man's “Speaking from the Heart” song from Wrestlemania: The Album is also quite incredible. The Hulk Hogan diss track from his 2003 rap album is pretty cool too. Here's the scene from the 2002 Spider-Man movie that features Randy Savage (with a side of Bruce Campbell). Is Jessica Rabbit more popular than Randy Savage on Google trends? They're comparable but every so often, Jessica Rabbit interests spikes. We discuss saxophone in rock music, as embodied by Tim Capello aka the buff sax player from Lost Boys & the Tina Turner video. Stacy Martin is the tattoo artist who did Jason's Klaus Nomi tattoo. Jake mentions German Expressionist cinema, which includes Metropolis and many other great (mostly silent) films. Here's the clip of Nomi backing up David Bowie on Saturday Night Live. The surgeon from Prince & the Revolution is named Doctor Fink. Jake originally thought the Klaus Nomi character on The Venture Bros. was supposed to be the guy from Prodigy. The Nomi Song is a documentary that Jason recommends if you want to cry. Nomi is sampled in “Beloved Freak” by Garbage. Here's the Nomi cover of “You Don't Own Me”. There's some pickle talk, including the controversy around the bread & butter variety. We get on a bit of a Jewel tangent, including her being the inspiration for a shaving product made by Schick (not Gillette), her song (and video) “Intuition”, her appearance on Undercover Boss and her recent tweet about Joe Rogan. We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Jade and Jake are both proud graduates of Mendocino College, where they could be found playing Terminator 2: Judgment Day pinball in the Eagle's Nest circa 1993. There's some talk of The Crappy, which was the name given to the house (in our hometown of Ukiah, California) where Jake lived and all his friends hung out. West Side Ukiah (aka “the good side of Dora”) is the Ukiah neighborhood where Phil grew up. It's above sea level. Jake and Jade were from the much-grittier streets of Empire Gardens and The Meadows, respectively. “Sudden Impact” was the name of both a mysterious drifter as well as his awesome mini-truck. It's also the name of the white-guy group in the “Motownphilly” video. Their album never got released. There's a podcast about them but we haven't listened to it. “Motownphilly” is of course by Boyz II Men, not Bell Biv DeVoe as Jake claims; though Michael Bivins did produce the song, and does the rap in it. We talk about 2 Live Crew, a rap group from Miami who were especially dirty and loved bass. Here's "Pop that Coochie" to give you some idea of what they were up to. We also mention “Ditty” by Paperboy. The mustache photo under discussion was printed on the CD of D Is For Delinquent by Jade's early band Loose Change (with Chon Travis). Another early band of Jade's that we mention is Influence 13 (with Nick 13). “Continuity of self” is the sense of self-continuity that represents the ability to perceive oneself as an entity that extends both backwards into the past and forwards into the future. This sense allows individuals to view themselves as being the same, despite the tremors induced by time and environment. Jake was the lead in the musical Li'l Abner in high school. Phil was in the play too in a small role. The end of one of Jake's songs was Phil's cue to come on the stage, so Phil listened to Jake sing it many times and sometimes gets it stuck in his head. Jake is not as into the Doggystyle album art as Phil accuses him of being. Green Day songs discussed include “2000 Light Years Away” and “Dominated Love Slave”. We also mention their record 39/Smooth, the Sweet Children EP and Dookie. Other albums discussed include the Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique and Nirvana's Nevermind. Green Apple Books (Jade calls it “Red Apple Books”) is a world-class bookstore on Clement Street in San Francisco. Phil briefly worked there but it turned out wasn't suited to retail work. We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: As they brag about in the episode, Jake & Ali recently held one-day-old lambs at Toluma Farms in Sonoma County. If you only watch the show's opening credits, Full House really just seems like a tourism ad for San Francisco. Danny Tanner was America's Dad for Beth & Ali, whereas Phil & Jake's America was raised by Bill Cosby. Phil & Jake talk about a Bob Saget scene in the movie Dirty Work, but they really mean the movie Half-Baked. Here's the Saget bit that Beth watched where he talks about his dad's dirty jokes. Saget gets extra consideration for his work with the Scleroderma Research Foundation. Here's Saget's part in The Aristocrats, and here's the Gilbert Gottfried part. We apologize in advance. Ali mentions that a few hours before recording this episode, she and Jake enjoyed some oysters at The Marshall Store (on California's Tomales Bay). Jake mentions that a few years ago, they shucked their own oysters at Buck Bay Oyster Farm (on Washington State's Orcas Island). They've indulged in oysters in many places, but not yet at The Shuckery (in Beth & Phil's home town of Petaluma, CA). It's an ongoing debate as to whether vegans should justify eating oysters. Amy Schneider was Jeopardy! champion until we jinxed her by talking about it on the podcast (which was recorded two days before she lost). She's the most successful woman ever to compete on the game show. She's the good kind of know-it-all. Jake tried to look up the German "scheisse" song that Beth mentions, but all he could find was this Lady Gaga song. Here's Los Punkitos performing “Caca Culo Pedo Pis”. Phil & Beth are targeted by this Fabreze ad with miniature toilets. Phil talks about Eddie Murphy doing toilet humor in his early act, which is recounted in “Eddie Murphy Raw”. We're still the first full page of search results when you Google shirtless men wearing elaborate angel wings, gold lamé shorts & furry cha-cha heels. We bring up saxophone in rock music, inciting Beth to vocalize the sax riff from “Baker Street” by Gerry Rafferty (which is, contrary to Phil's opinion, rock music). This episode is the second time that Jake has given a free plug to Fort Point's Sfizio Italian Style Pilsner. The X-Men come up a couple of times in this episode, including when Jake speculates that– in light of Beth's pubic hair definitions– Beast is covered in pubic hair, because mutant powers manifest at puberty. Of course, Beast's full-body fur was part of a post-puberty secondary mutation, so Jake's wrong on this one. Chest hair-y men discussed include Burt Reynolds, Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot. We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Phil said that Ludacris signed Justin Bieber but in reality Ludacris was just featured on Bieber's first single. Phil had Bieber confused with Chingy again. As Jake notes, Charli XCX is probably most known from songs where she's a featured guest. We discuss many of these, including “I Love It” by Icona Pop (feat. Charli XCX), “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea (feat. Charli XCX) and “Drop That Kitty” by Ty Dolla $ign (feat. Charli XCX & Tinashe). That last song is relevant to Phil because he lives with a cat now. Of course we also talk about some songs with Charli XCX as the main artist, including “Boom Clap”, “Break the Rules”, “Vroom Vroom”, “pink diamond”, “After the Afterparty” (feat. Lil Yachty), “1999” (with Troye Sivan) and “New Shapes” (feat. Christine and the Queens and Caroline Polachek). Jake thinks that last song sounds like the end of “Shock to Your System” by Tegan & Sara.  “Same Old Love” by Selena Gomez was written by Charli XCX, and as Phil notes sounds like “You Showed Me” by the Turtles. SOPHIE (RIP) was a producer who worked with Charli XCX. Jake and Phil agree that “Waterfalls” by TLC is one of the worst songs. WebMD says synesthesia is real. Here's a pretty good Doctor Doom reading list. It includes the following stories that we mention in this episode: Secret Wars (1984), Emperor Doom, Dr. Strange & Dr. Doom: Triumph and Torment and Secret Wars (2015). It's hard to talk about Doctor Doom without talking about the Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four, the title characters of “"The World's Greatest Comic Magazine!" Jake knew that a lame Doctor Doom was feature in the first two Fantastic Four movies from 20th Century Fox, but wasn't sure about the 2015 reboot. Research shows that Doom is, in fact, in it (but with the “Doctor” part of his name removed). Here's the pic of Doctor Doom with Sub-Mariner's horn that Phil refers to. Here's a bias-confirming article about Darth Vader borrowing from Doctor Doom. Voice of Latveria is a great podcast dedicated to all things Doom. Phil's not a Family Guy fan but he found this relevant clip while looking for Wile E. Coyote videos to show his dad. Phil, Jake and Jason are reunited with bud-of-the-pod Dave Hause to rank pickles and Sir Topham Hatt (from Thomas & Friends) on the List of Every Damn Thing. Plus coffee gets re-ranked!Follow Dave on Instagram (@davehause), Twitter (@hausedave) and Facebook (DaveHauseMusic). We love his critically-acclaimed new album Blood Harmony, and so will you (it's on Spotify & Apple Music). Hopefully you can see him play live near you!If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Here's Dave's USA Today piece about Taylor Swift being “infinitely more punk rock” than him. Jason and Jake praise the song “Gary” from Dave's new record, because it's an incredible song. We note that our last episode featured Dave's brother Tim Hause. The two brothers collaborated on Blood Harmony, as well as on Tim Hause's recently-recorded album (coming out later this year). We successfully deduce that sauerkraut is both a pickled and fermented food (the same goes for kimchi). Here's a Southern Living article about how Texans– and only Texans– eat pickles at the movie theater. We discuss different types of pickles, such as cornichons and bread-and-butter pickles (the latter of which apparently got their name because they were good for bartering for staple food items). Here's Hannibal Buress' pickle juice bit wherein he confesses "I have a surplus of pickle juice in my apartment". We talk about Dave being a transplant from Philadelphia. Did you know that the city's name literally means "Brother Love" in Greek? Why doesn't this get mentioned more? Guy Fieri is the prime minister of Sonoma County, where Phil lives. Phil says that all businesses in the county have a picture of Fieri on the wall, and he eats and drinks for free by law. Jason uses “onion murder” as an argument for ranking pickles higher than onions. Research shows that a guy in India was once killed for onions, but it's not fair to blame the onions for this. Maybe the guy who died in a tragic accident while harvesting onions could be blamed on the onions. Phil ponders on the nature of Thomas' sentience, and whether his consciousness is a gestalt of the train itself and the humans that operate it. Jake compares it to Voltron. Sir Tophamm Hatt is originally from The Railway Series books by Wilbert & Christopher Awdry, but our frame of reference is mostly the Thomas & Friends TV show (featuring, of course, the titular star Thomas the Tank Engine). Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Patrick Stewart and Brian Cox are our nominees for portraying a live-action Topham Hatt. We shout-out some of our favorite coffee companies: Time & Tide Coffee (Biddeford, ME), Timeless Coffee (Oakland, CA) and Black Oak Coffee (Ukiah, CA). We also give praise to the Blue Danube Coffee House on Clement Street in San Francisco. We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Phil looked up people pronouncing “human” like “yu-man” and apparently it's how people in NYC, Philadelphia and some places in Ireland say it. Phil is from rural California and although he used to live in NYC, he moved there as an adult. This clip features a scientific explanation of how Paul Bunyan and Babe the Big Blue Ox created the Grand Teton mountain range by roughhousing. We discuss a number of volcanic-relevant geographical locations including Mount St. Helens, The Road to Hana, Mount Shasta, Panum Crater, Pompeii, Arenal Volcano and Long Valley Caldera. Dr. Pimple Popper is a dermatologist who makes videos of pimples being popped. Look, the world isn't always that great, this sort of stuff is out there. We briefly discuss a volcano that erupted in the 19th Century, affecting global weather patterns and creating a year without a summer. The eruption in question was that of Mount Tambora in 1815 (the Year Without a Summer was the following year). It's also hypothesized that a similar thing happened in the 6th Century. Joe Vs. the Volcano is a 1990 film by John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck) starring Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan (in multiple roles). It's a fun movie that lost a lot of money. Phil talks about underwater animals that survive from “geothermal” heat, but the real term is "hydrothermal vent". These animals have a whole little ecosystem that doesn't need sunlight. They live in one of the few truly alien environments on Earth. Jake mentions the use of McLean's song in Black Widow, but we can't remember the name of the character Yelena Belova. “The Day the Music Died” is a reference to Feb. 3, 1959, when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens & Big Bopper died in a plane crash.  Jake mentions the 1969 Altamont Free Concert, which is considered one of the end-markers of the 1960s. He incorrectly refers to the killing of a woman at the concert, when in fact it was an eighteen-year-old man (named Meredith) who was stabbed to death. Three other people also died at the concert. Songs we compare “American Pie” to include “Black Betty” by Ram Jam, “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by The Byrds, “Cats In the Cradle” by Harry Chapin, “You're So Vain” by Carly Simon, “The First Cut is the Deepest” by Rod Stewart, “Night Moves” by Bob Seager, “Mrs. Robinson” by Simon & Garfunkel, “The Saga Begins” by “Weird Al” Yankovic, “Cherry Pie” by Warrant, “Sweet Potato Pie” by Domino, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick and “Roly Poly” by Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. We compare it to a few Billy Joel songs (“We Didn't Start the Fire”, “Piano Man” and “Only the Good Die Young”). There's been an ongoing reassessment of Billy Joel (since about 2009 when this LA times blog defended him). Here's a Vice defense, and here's Jon Gabrus' "High and Mighty" Billy Joel episode. We also discuss Taylor Swift's “All Too Well” and the “American Pie” cover by Madonna. Don McLean's twenty-seven year-old girlfriend is Paris Dylan. She and former NBA player Chris "Birdman" Andersen were both victims of a catfishing scheme a few years ago that's too weird to even explain but here's an honest attempt. Here's the Cocaine & Rhinestones episode on the Louvin Brothers (which talks about blood harmonies). We never say the name of their band, but when we talk about Matt Hock & Dave Walsh we're of course talking about Space Cadet. It takes up a lot of counter space but it's good at making certain things such asparagus or chicken. “Gangster's Paradise” by Coolio (with the Stevie Wonder sample) was a big hit. Have you seen the video where MIchelle Pfeiffer stares down the kids? Jake speculates that the Marvel Comics character Death first appeared in an issue of Silver Surfer, but he's wrong. She was introduced in Captain Marvel #26 (the cover of which features Ben Grimm aka The Thing saying his famous catchphrase). Joe imagines that Phil's dad looked like Richard Dreyfuss. Phil says he was more like Richard Dreyfuss in Jaws, but he liked to think of himself as like Roy Scheider or Robert Shaw from Jaws. It's hard to understand from the lyrics of “The Crossroads” by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony what the Crossroads is. Is it Purgatory? Joe & Jake have both had pretty severe brain injuries and they brag about it and lord it over Phil all the time. Vietnam uses the dong for it's currency. Phil looked into whether there's a clean version of the song about the place in France (you know the one). It's built on an old melody ("the Arabian Riff") that was brought to America for the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. This melody is often used whenever there is belly dancing or snake charming going on. Phil had assumed that the song was about the Folies Bergere. Kesha used it in 2010. Jake heard legendary comics writer Chris Claremont discuss the characters Mister Sinister & Gambit on this episode of Screw It, We're Just Gonna Talk About Comics.  Surge was a real soda in the 90s. Jooky was a fictional soda that Sprite invented in the 90s so they could contrast their own brutal honesty against Jooky's lies. The problem was that the fake ads for Jooky made us want it.  Phil's wife Beth is from Stockton, CA (aka “The 209”), well-known for having the deepest inland seaport on the West Coast and having the second-oldest symphony in California. Phil, Jake and Jason are reunited with Natalie H. to rank Harry Styles and clowns on the List of Every Damn Thing.VOTE HERE to help choose which item on the List of Every Damn Thing should be re-ranked in an upcoming episode (you can vote every day, and for multiple items). If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Harry Styles has a role in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk. It's not a major role, but it's bigger than the role of Guy Looking at Camera. Charli XCX is a pop star and songwriter from the UK. You know her voice from the hooks on "I Love It" and "Fancy". Phil appreciates her but doesn't know the name for what her fans call themselves (a la Harry Styles' “Stylers”) so he's kind of noncommittal in his fandom. Harry Styles' fingernail polish line is called Pleasing and the pre-sale is already sold out. We make the obvious comparison of Harry Styles to Prince, and express doubts as to whether Styles is a songwriter on the level of Prince. Jake looked into it, and found that Harry Styles is in fact a songwriter (including songs for other artists), but unlike Prince he doesn't appear to have sole credit on any songs. Also, he's nowhere near as prolific a songwriter as Prince (at least so far). Natalie is right when she says Billy Porter wore the Christian Siriano tux dress design to the Oscars in 2019.  Here's the Vogue Magazine Harry Styles story that we discuss. “Hungry Heart” was written by Bruce Springsteen for the Ramones. If you listen to the song, you can hear how he sings it sort of like Joey Ramone and you can also imagine how Joey Ramone would have sung it. People have tried to recreate it. Phil likes to imagine it would have sounded like a song on End of the Century. It's not clear why they never recorded the song. According to Andrew Dice Clay, My Cousin Vinny was developed as a vehicle for him, but when The Adventures of Ford Fairlane flopped, they made it with Joe Pesci instead. In an impressive feat of inference and detective work, Phil and his wife figured this out by themselves. She said that it seemed like the part was written for someone younger and they just wracked their brains thinking of Italian-American comedic actors from the early 90s until they figured it out. Pee-Wee Herman maybe could have worked playing the title role in My Cousin Vinny but probably he shouldn't have done Italian-Face. We briefly discuss the Insane Clown Posse and how our podcast is pro-Juggalo. Bill Irwin is the king of clowns. Oscar-winner Julianne Moore plays a sexy clown in The Ladies' Man. “Tears of a Clown” by Smokey Robinson is one of the greatest pop songs to ever be recorded. Here's the Cecily Strong clown bit that was on Saturday Night Live. Bianca del Rio is the winner of Season 6 of Rupaul's Drag Race and is often referred to as the “Clown in a Gown”. Jake refers to “Wavy Gravy's Clown College” but it's actually a Clown Camp called Camp Winnarainbow. It's still in operation. Talk about glamping! Pickle Family Circus was a troupe in San Francisco in the ‘70's and is said to have brought back the circus trend.  The Man Who Laughs is a 1928 German film. Conrad Veidt's look in the title role is where the look of the Joker from Batman was pulled from in 1940.  None of us could say for sure what the capital city of Tennessee is. It's Nashville.  Jake was wrong when he said San Francisco was never the capital of California. It was temporarily made the capitol in 1862 while Sacramento suffered from flooding. There was naver a capital building in San Francisco, though; the state legislature was held at the Merchants' Exchange Building during the brief tenure in S.F. The I Love Lucy episode featuring Pepito the Clown that Jason refers to was actually a pilot episode that never aired during the original run of the show, and was apparently lost for decades. We ponder whether the term “hobo” is offensive, and decide that it isn't. But we might be wrong. Violator from Spawn is a pretty sucky character. Why are there military vehicles in this world? Why are there ambulances for that matter? Why school buses?  Phil mentions a scene in the Brave Little Toaster where appliances at a junkyard sing a sad song. This page from Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel which also makes him sad. We discuss a number of other Star Trek properties, including the movies, as well as Star Trek: The Original Series, Deep Space Nine, Lower Decks and Picard. Of course we talk about the Star Trek: The Next Generation pinball game, which comes in second place on the Internet Pinball Database list of Top 300 Electronic Pinball Machines. “Darmok” is Phil's favorite episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (although he's only seen a few). It's about understanding people and learning how to listen. It's kind of like the thinking man's version of the episode from Star Trek: The Original Series where Kirk fights a lizard man (and you can see cars on the highway in the background).  The SF Chronicle's little man dates all the way back to the 1940s! Sir Patrick Stewart is the true star of Star Trek: the Next Generation. When he's not on screen Phil & Jake immediately lose interest. Phil's feelings towards Data probably aren't going to date well.  In related news, Sophia the android (who, of course, you can follow on twitter) probably wouldn't enjoy our episode on the uncanny valley effect very much (because she's a robot and can't experience enjoyment). Because the episode wouldn't be complete without it, we do mention both the Borg and the character of Q (no relation to QAnon). There are channels on YouTube of just ambient starship background noise. Here's one of the ship from Star Trek: the Next Generation. In Star Trek: TNG the crew of the ship sometimes go into a virtual reality type room for training or recreation, called the Holodeck. They solve mysteries as Sherlock Holmes, etc,,, whatever they have wardrobe and sets for at Paramount. Phil doesn't like it because the whole point of watching a TV show about travelling through space would presumably be to see people traveling through space. If he wanted to see a Sherlock Holmes-based TV show he'd watch one of those. Melissa has some real issues with the TNG episode “Sub Rosa” in which Dr. Crusher falls in love with her dead grandmother's candle ghost lover. We mention the character Geordi La Forge, who was born without sight but futuristic technology allows him to see. Phil's wonderful wife Beth mentioned that Deanna Troi's hair is not her real hair. This is the latest in a series of outrages along the lines of when she told him that Kiefer Sutherland is wearing a wig in the Lost Boys (which is partially true) and that Lynda Carter's butt was padded in Wonder Woman. Jake tried out the Harvey Wallbanger at Whitechapel, a London-themed steampunk-adjacent gin-centric cocktail bar in San Francisco. One of us claims that Galliano-- the liquor most known for its use in the Harvey Wallbanger-- is also used to make a Sex On the Beach, but afterwords we couldn't find any recipes supporting that claim. Phil and Jake rank bicycles, scatting (aka scat singing), and feeding cats like babies on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We briefly discuss ventriloquism, including mention of Candice Bergen's father Edgar Bergen, who was an actor, comedian and Vaudeville and radio ventriloquist. He was a big star, bigger than it's possible to imagine someone being when his main thing is throwing his voice through a dummy that sits on his lap ON THE RADIO. Even on TV or movies it doesn't really make sense because all the sound comes from the same speaker so throwing his voice doesn't seem that impressive and editing can be done anyways. It just seems like the kind of thing that only would work in live performances but here we are! His show was on the radio for 20 years! Phil rode a bicycle across the USA from Yorktown, VA to Vallejo CA. He's a very private person and doesn't like to talk about it much unless you mention bikes, the USA, Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California or any of the geographical features therein. Jake rode a bike around the island of Losinj, Croatia. Jake refers to wearing a “turtle shell brace” after his bike accident, but it's maybe more commonly called a clamshell brace. Madison Square Garden is the World's Most Famous Arena. It sits on top of Penn Station between 7th and 8th Ave in Manhattan. It's sort of ugly and it replaced the old Penn Station which was an architectural marvel. We mention it because Phil notes that the original MSG was the site of many indoor bicycle races (and was actually on Madison Avenue which made a lot more sense).  Notable scatters discussed include Steven Tyler (of Aerosmith), David Lee Roth, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are Cleveland rappers who were signed and promoted by the late Eazy-E before his death. They were really influential in their sing-songy delivery (which you could hear in Crucial Conflict, Three Six Mafia & Nelly)  and their post Geto Boys "horrorcore" angle (similar to Gravediggaz). Their biggest successes were probably Crossroads, a meditation on death and First of the Month, a celebration of plenty. They once filme a video of their trip to Switzerland which was made to get Phil Collins to agree to let them sample him for their song Home. Here's the Bone Thugs sketch on Saturday Night Live that Jake mentions. MC Skat Cat was an animated cat that would rap in the early 90s. Most famously with Paula Abdul. Phil just listened to "Skat Strut" for the first time and enjoyed the Earth, Wind & Fire sample. “Scatman (ski-ba-bob-ba-dop-bop)” by Scatman John is not to be confused with Scatman Crothers. The Fu-Schnickens were a hip-hop trio that were very difficult to understand but nonetheless quite impressive because they rapped at double (maybe triple?) speed. Chip-Fu in particular was just incredible even if the speed of the words made you dizzy. I follow him on twitter but he just tweets at regular speed, sadly. As a white kid from rural California with zero cultural context, Phil didn't understand that I was hearing a Caribbean thing. Their Ring the Alarm samples the Tenor Saw classic. They're mostly remembered now for making Can We Rock with Shaquille O'Neal. Phil might have taken it too far to say Doo Wop music was scatting. The second half of "Sh-Booom" is a good example of what he was referring to though. “Heebie Jeebies” by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five is, as of 2021, in the public domain. Phil's thinking we should make this our show's theme song. Both New Orleans and Queens can claim Louis Armstrong. He was from New Orleans but he moved to Corona, Queens (very close to where the Mets play) and lived there from 1943 until his death in 1971.  The Harder They Fall on Netflix features “Broader Than Broadway” by Barrington Levy, which is a fantastic song. We discuss “Panama” by Van Halen. Phil says that the lyrics to this song don't matter at all and they might as well be scatting. And go to one of their upcoming shows! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We mention Dave's previous band The Explosion, which he was in with friends-and-guests-of-the-pod and guests Matt Hock and Andrew Black. But we somehow fail to mention The Loved Ones, which he was in with other friend-and-guest-of-the-pod (and other Dave) Dave Hause. We couldn't find an image of Jake's monkey-on-a-skateboard The Explosion t-shirt, but you should check out the other incredible artwork of Linas Garsys. Phil has a bestiary, which is a book about all animals, translated from Latin by T.H. White (who wrote The Sword in the Stone and a lot of other things). You can read the bestiary here. If you like dogs, Dave recommends the TV show Lucky Dog. Poochie from The Simpsons is a dog who rocks the telly. He's half Joe Camel and the third Fonzerelli. He's a kung-fu hippie from the Gangster City. He's a rapping surfer. You're the fool he pities. Here's the scene from Snatch that Jake refers to. Cats' eyes emit light rays. We don't know if this is because of science or because of magic. Probably both.  The CDC's FAQ on toxoplasmosis doesn't mention attraction to cats as a symptom, but it doesn't refute it either. Jake suspects the Batman Returns version of Selena Kyle aka Catwoman has toxoplasmosis. We talk about the 1980s cartoon Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats, which Phil only ever saw the second segment of growing up, because of the scheduling. The first segment was about Heathcliff doing the kind of things he does in the newspaper comic strip. The second segment was about a group of cats who lived in a junkyard, led by Riff Raff, an orange cat who wears a big white hat. In South America, guinea pigs are frequently eaten, and are called cuy, probably named after the sound they make. Phil mentions seeing them in the frozen food section at Trade Fair supermarket in Astoria Queens, NY. There was an escaped capybara in California, and friend-of-the-pod Victor made twitter for it. And go to one of their upcoming shows! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: In the episode, Phil talks about @tweakseason on TikTok. Phil doesn't have TikTok but he has a summary of @tweakseason's activities on his desk every Monday morning. Here's a youtube compilation it's in the genre of "guy walking around NYC". Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser is a book about fast food in America. We read it a long time ago but we remember it was heavy on the Carl's Jr. One of the last chapters is about how everything they just said about how bad the industry is doesn't really apply to In-N-Out - they pay their workers better, produce better quality food, etc. Shake Shack is a fast-casual hamburger chain based in NYC (which is now nationwide). According to Phil, the burger is better than In-N-Out but it costs three times as much.  We mention Taqueria Diana in Williamsburg again. Go there. Dick's is the place where the cool hang out. The swass like to play, and the rich flaunt clout. It's a burger place in Seattle. In an alternate universe it took off in popularity instead of In-N-Out. Sir Mix-A-Lot is a Seattle-based rapper and HAM radio enthusiast. Waffle House is an all-day breakfast chain based in the Southeast. When fights happen at Waffle House, they often end up on social media. Veggie Grill is a vegetarian fast food chain on the West Coast, as well as in New York and Massachusetts. It's pretty much wherever coastal elites like to be, and it's good food. Taco Time is a Mexican fast food chain in the western U.S., but not California. El Pollo Loco deserves to be ranked later. It's Phil's favorite fast-food chain. "Thighvertising" came up in Phil's search for portmanteaus. He admits Jake was right it should be called “adverthighsing”. James Joyce coined the term “Scandiknavery” in Finnegan's Wake'. It's pretty specific but we're looking forward to using it.  Phil thinks “pegacorn is” a bad one because "Winged Unicorn" just sounds better. Other portmanteaus discussed include “bodacious”, “throuple”, “guesstimate” and “chillax”. After plugging his own shows, Matt makes sure to plug our good friend Dave Hause's upcoming shows in November. Jake and Phil are joined by ghostly spirits from the other side of the flimsy veil that separates our world from the next in this extremely Frightening Lightning episode. We rank pie, water parks, earplugs, newspapers, wedding anniversaries, audiobooks.SHOW NOTES: The Kurt Vonnegut story Phil was talking about was Harrison Bergeron. Full text of the story is here, it's very short. It's been adapted several times for TV and movies. It's the kind of science-fiction story that probably gets taken the wrong way a lot. The Video game we mentioned but didn't know the full name of was Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road. Here's a video of what it looks like a real Super Sprint vibe to the proceedings. Key Lime pie is brought up. You don't need limes from Key West to make these pies, just use regular limes. The Stephen King audiobook that the populist Phil talks about is 11/22/63. It was made into a movie on Hulu. Phil's not a Stephen King guy really but he likes time travel stories. This book is about a portal that opens up to a particular town in Maine on the same day. A guy who owns a hamburger place goes into the past and buys the same meat over and over from this town in Maine to bring back to the present to serve to his customers. Wait, maybe that's Stephen King telling on himself! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).

Cab, Howard the Duck, Judgement Night and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Wazzup (1999) was a Budweiser ad directed by Drumline director Charles Stone III based on his own short film "true" which was based on a real event in his life.  Here's the Make 7… Up Yours commercial starring Orlando Jones. Malik is the drummer who Andrew recommends following on Instagram. We talk a bit about Washington D.C. go-go music, which is a regional musical style that never got the widespread recognition it deserves. Da' Butt by Experience Unlimited is probably the most well-known go-go song. We make reference to HBCUs. There are about 100 historically black colleges & universities in the US. Atlanta A&T is a fictional school. Morris Brown is a real college though and that's their band in the movie. We give props to the Judgement Night soundtrack. Jake was right that there's an Onyx / Biohazard collabo on it, but Andrew's right that it's not the song “Slam”. DuckTales is a Disney cartoon adventure show about Donald Duck's nephews and uncle going on adventures. The original 1980s run was heavily based on the 1950s comics that taught Phil how to read. Phil's son watches the new series which features Paul F. Tompkins as Donald's cousin, Gladstone. Phil & Jake welcome Nick G. to the show to deface the List of Every Damn Thing with graffiti. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Before recording this episode, Jake had the best onion ring of his life at Big Kel's in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Daphne & Velma is a live-action movie from 2018 about the two girls from Scooby-Doo solving mysteries without the dead weight of the dog and the two boys. I think it might be a prequel too since they're in high school and it's our understanding that they are college age in other depictions. Garfield Minus Garfield (Phil got the name wrong) was a series of photoshopped Garfield comics that removed Garfield from them. Hanna-Barbera was behind maybe half of all American-produced cartoons in the second  half of the 20th century. A lot of the studio's work was real trash although kids had no better choices back then so they have fond memories of it. We don't know how they didn't get sued for basing their cartoons so obviously on actual people. Fred Flintstone for example was based on Jackie Gleason. Vandals were a Germanic people living in late-Roman times who were characterized years later by renaissance and early-modern historians as being all about pointless destruction. Phil was wrong when he claimed that "Vandalism" was coined in Roman times, the term wasn't invented until the 1790s.  Hobo graffiti are glyphs that help hobos get by in the world. Here's the more-respectable anarchy symbol that Jake saw in Spain. Here's the anti-graffiti wall from Demolition Man. Here's Nic Cage's friend's son writing “FART” on the wall in Raising Arizona. Subscribe wherever you get your podcasts! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Jake is in unceded Pomo territory while recording the episode. Sitcoms are comedies where the characters carry over from episode to episode but are put in different situations like "Jack makes a date with two girls for the same night" type shit. We talk about a lot of sitcoms including The Golden Palace, All In the Family, Maude, Seinfeld, Empty Nest, Benson, The Facts of Life, Frasier, Married With Children and Designing Women (sadly there will be NO reboot). Adrienne Barbeau has come up a couple times in the history of Every Damn Thing already. She played Bea Arthur's daughter on Maude and was the voice of Catwoman on Batman: The Animated Series. Also she was in Swamp Thing, and Escape from New York. She often has a look on her face like she's smelling something foul. Mama's Family was a spinoff of some recurring sketches on the The Carol Burnett Show. Phil only ever saw this on TV as a kid when he was waiting for something else to start. The cheapness of the sets & production really stood out to him. Here's the pic of Bea Arthur in a sexy feather boa that we promised. We get a bit sidetracked with Fatty Arbuckle. The book Phil mentioned about him was I, Fatty by Jerry Stahl who also wrote Permanent Midnight which is in part about being a junkie while being a writer on the sitcom Alf. Here's Buster Keaton looking all sexy. Hentai is, generally speaking, pornographic anime. Pokemon is maybe the most popular anime there is in the US. Phil's kid loves it. Kiki's Delivery Service is a fantastic movie about a young witch trying to make her way in life. The voice of the cat in the English dub of it is Phil Hartmann's last role. The Little Mermaid is a Disney movie that's very short and came out the same year as Kiki's Delivery Service and really suffers in comparison. Other anime discussed include Sailor Moon, Ninja Scroll, My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke. Hanna-Barbera is the animation studio that created Scooby-Doo and many other cartoons, now owned by Warner Brothers. Their work in the 60s and 70s was usually pretty dull. It seemed like it was made by people who had contempt for their audience and maybe themselves. Here's the Kewpie ad mentioned by Jason. Hatsune Miku, Jake's one-time employer, is a Vocaloid software voicebank developed by Crypton Future Media, represented by a hologram of a 16-year-old girl with long, turquoise twintails. Jessica Rabbit is getting a Disneyland makeover.  Song of the South is buried deep in the Disney vault and it's impossible to imagine Disney ever releasing it, but here's a podcast detailing it's sordid past.  ALSO DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE:Betty White * Rue McClanahan * Estelle Getty * The Star Wars Holiday Special * Lucille Ball * The Three Stooges * Shakira * anti-diarrhea medicine * Avatar: The Last Airbender * G.I. He's an artificial intelligence that does song parodies. We get into a lot of hologram talk. Here's a write-up of Jenni Rivera's hologram's appearance at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. And here's some info on the upcoming ABBA hologram show. The Tehachapi Loop is popular with railfans like Jake. We discuss fake train tunnels, and hate it when this happens. Here's the episode of Efrem's podcast Into the Weeds featuring Tommy Chong. “Barroom Buddies” by Clint Eastwood & Merle Haggard is a real thing! “Drinkenstein” is a song written by Dolly Parton (the current #1 on the List of Everything) & sung by Sylvester Stallone. It's from the movie Rhinestone which they starred in. We think we've gotten this wrong before in the past but for the record, Murphy Lee is not the guy who wears the Phantom of the Opera mask in the St. Lunatics. Murphy Lee and Kyjuan are the only members of the St Lunatics anyone can remember, and neither are the ones who wear the mask. That's Slo Down. He was a silent hypeman who ended up in a feud with Nelly because he felt he wasn't being paid properly. Here's YouTuber Linzor explaining her Band-Aid fashion. Hatless Slash is actually pretty common. Efrem surely meant to say John Schnieder when he was talking about John Davidson. In looking for a list of the most iconic mudflaps we learned that people seem to go with unadorned mudflaps nowadays. Phil and Jake rank the emotional response known as the uncanny valley effect, and the city of Bend, Oregon on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Masahira Mori is a robot expert and professor (the ASIMO robot was designed by one of his students). It should never be doubted that Jake has read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. The Final Fantasy movie is an oft-cited example of the uncanny valley effect. It's an animated movie made entirely with CGI, like a video game cut-scene, and audiences were unsettled by the creepy dead eyes. The Beowulf movie has a similar vibe. Pokemon of course doesn't go for photorealism, that's why it's universally beloved. In an episode of The Simpsons, Homer gets a pet lobster who looks to Homer like this, whereas other characters see the lobster like this. Boston Dynamics makes robots that move in human-like ways. There's a character in Ted Lasso played by Brett Goldstein (who just won an Emmy for the role). Many viewers thought this guy didn't exist and was a CGI creation. It seems ludicrous until you see this picture of his character, he looks like a FIFA video game character. Breath of the Wild is a Nintendo game that's beautiful but not photorealistic. It bypasses the uncanny valley. Star Wars tried CGI versions of Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing in the same movie. It seems gross and scary to Phil (unlike C-3P0 and R2-D2). Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation was a real human actor deliberately playing a robot who seemed vaguely unnatural. Phil missed the point of any stories about him because he looked different. Charlie XCX is a pop star who's worked with PC Music which is a hard-to-explain collective / label that navigates the uncanny valley of music (if that exists) by making aggressively fake-sounding music and wallowing in artifice. The way she (or any public figure) manages her persona is tied up with UV-related ideas. In looking for a proper clip of her to link to we found this news story about how her record label is pushing her to be more "real" and she would prefer to be less real!  Drum machines are like this too. The 808 kick drum doesn't sound real, that's why it's better than some other more real-sounding synthesizers. Here's the biting dolls scene from Barbarella. The Polar Express is a deeply cursed movie and features an uncanny valley hall-of-fame performance by Steven Tyler as a scatting Christmas elf. The Matrix Reloaded had a big fight scene which had been promoted ahead of the release of the film but when the movie came out it was unsatisfying and weightless, and it didn't help that it came out around the same time as Kill Bill Vol. 1, which had a massive fight scene with real stakes and actual physicality. REI's headquarters is in Kent, WA (not Bend). While in Bend, Jake picked up a hazy IPA from Immersion Brewing. It paired pretty well with the Impossible Burger that he got from the Incred-A-Bowl food truck. Les Schwab was the founder of a chain of tire retailers in the Western US. Phil is probably conflating the permanent tire fire on the Simpsons with an event in the 90s in Oregon where there was a real tire fire and he assumed that because it involved tires and Oregon, it had something to do with Les Schwab. Our vague recollection of some sort of some kind of lava cave attraction near Bend was surely about the Lava River Cave. Phoebe disagrees as a laundry-doer in humid and smelly New York.  Phil also says that peanuts should be marketed as the most crunchy form of peanut butter; peanuts become peanut butter once you chew them so they should be sold as a less messy form of peanut butter. Here's the History Vs. Theodore Roosevelt podcast that Jake listened to for show prep. The Strenuous Life is a speech in which T.R. said that “danger, hardship, and bitter toil… win the splendid triumph.” As a sickly kid, Roosevelt's father pushed him to challenge himself physically and it became the cornerstone of Teddy's persona — walking into danger like the Battle of San Juan Hill, choosing a rugged life in the Badlands rather than seeking comfort in New York after the death of his mother and wife on the same night.  William McKinley was assassinated by an anarchist. The guy who tried to assassinate Teddy Roosevelt said McKinley visited him in a dream and told him to do it.   The "Man in the Arena" speech is actually called “Citizenship in a Republic”. Roosevelt was a backer of the Simplified Spelling Board, who pushed to simplify spelling. Grave-robbing was a big deal before someone thought up donating your body to science. The Panama Canal was completed in 1914 (the Suez Canal was completed forty-five years earlier in 1869). Turns out it was actually TR's dad (TR senior) who was one of the founders of the American Museum of Natural History, not TR.  Lamarckian evolution, as we discussed, is a discredited idea of evolution where acquired characteristics are inherited. The classic example is a giraffe. Lamarck explained that a giraffe's neck is long because its ancestors stretched their necks to get leaves and passed the longer necks along to their descendants. The beverages we imbibed were Modelo Chelada Mango Picante, Stubbe's Flemish Red Ale, Juneshine Grapefruit Paloma Hard Kombucha, Athletic Brewing Co. Run Wild IPA (non-alcoholic), Fort Point Beer Co. SFizio Italian Style Pilsner and Adobe Creek Depersonalization IPA. “Fried hard” wings are extra crispy. Chris Cotton explains this in his video.  Takis Fuego are rated “Extreme”. Aerosmith songs (and music videos) discussed include “Cryin'”, “Love In An Elevator” and “Dude Looks Like a Lady”. We also discuss the Run-DMC “Walk This Way” cover / collaboration. Here's the tongue piercing scene from The Sweetest Thing. It defies credulity for a few reasons. Jason insists we include this link to Steven Tyler's feet.  FAO Schwarz is still active on the internets. Maybe if you let them know we sent you, they'll finally give EDT a sponsor deal.  We mention Chad Kroger and Nickelback's "fall from grace". Here's a tweet of Guy Fieri watching Nickelback.  “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick Taqueria Diana is a place you must eat at in New York City. Phil is maybe thinking of Fort Ross when he tells the story of Russian settlers being chased off by gophers. Here's the article where Jake got most of his information about Zima. Here's a TV ad for Crystal Pepsi from 1993 featuring “Right Now” by Van Halen. We talk about a lot of other beverages in the episode, including malt liquor, White Claw, craft beer, Mike's Hard Lemonade, New York Seltzer, hard kombucha, non-alcoholic sparkling water, cold brew shandy and apple juice. As for the sources of info on hard seltzer sales dropping, which Phil says on-mic he'd put in the show notes... Phil mostly half-read headlines and parroted them, and is pretending he knows what he's talking about. Here's a story that goes into it a little bit. Journalists seem to want the trend to be over but maybe it's just a permanent part of our lives now like constant wood smoke in the fall. The website for Biergarten in San Francisco is very basic. They seem to be closed until the pandemic is really really over, which is weird because it's an all-outdoor space. Casa Bonita in Denver seems to still be currently closed as well, but they are offering free backstage tours. The restaurant has recently been purchased by the creators of South Park who, like Jake, are from Colorado. In England diarrhea is spelled "diarrhoea" It's awful just bottom tier spelling. The Bristol stool scale is the standard method for stool. “The Green, Green Grass of Home” is a bona fide standard, mostly in the realm of Country Music. The Tom Jones version is the one Alexa remembers best. Jake and Phil are more familiar with Merle Haggard's take of the song. Jake correctly surmises that George Jones recorded the song as well. It has also been performed by Porter Wagoner, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charley Pride, Dean Martin, Johnny Cash, Johnny Paycheck, Joan Baez, The Grateful Dead, Elvis Presley, Gram Parsons & The Flying Burrito Brothers, Kenny Rogers, Nick Cave and many others. Phil and Jake rank the posthumously-released Bruce Lee film Game of Death, food poisoning and triangle pizza on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Throughout the episode, Jake mistakenly refers to the movie production company Golden Harvest as “Golden Era” which is actually the name of a vegan Chinese restaurant in San Francisco which has been around since before veganism went mainstream. As Phil mentions, the recent Star Wars movie The Rise of Skywalker was produced after Carrie Fisher died. They spliced together various outtakes from the previous movies to make it look like she was in the movie. It didn't really work, how could it? Not much else in the movie did either although one exception was the chimpanzee with a welding torch. We mention Rudolph Valentino. Here's some details about his death & funeral.  Jake talks about the documentary Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey. Skip to timestamp 58:30 to watch the original Game of Death footage in full. Colleen Camp has had a full Hollywood career including roles in Clue, Apocalypse Now and a couple of Police Academy movies. She was also in Smokey & the Bandit 3, which like Game of Death involved extensive re-shooting for the final product. The original was meant to have Jackie Gleason in both the roles of Smokey and the Bandit, but after the promotional material elicited negative reactions, they re-shot the Bandit scenes with Jerry Reed. Phil started watching The Suicide Squad but it was too much gore for him. He's not prudish about that stuff but it's not fun for him anymore. The Seven Little Fortunes was a group of child performers who included Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. Chan has said they'd get whipped if they didn't act right. Shreddies are similar to Wheat Chex (Phil said Triscuits). Their Diamond Shreddies campaign is very clever and is very similar to Oops! all Berries but with more world-building.  When Phil referred to “Oops! All Burnt Cheez-Its” of course he meant "extra-toasty Cheez-Its". They're the most requested flavor apparently. What we'd like is if they maintained some kind of fictional reason for why they were extra toasty like Oops! All Berries. Maybe something like "Dammit, we burned all the Cheez-Its!" Sector pizza is what most people (except Jake) probably are thinking of when they say triangle pizza. It's a circular pizza that's been cut through the center four times at different angles so that each slice is straight on two sides and curved along the edge. Circle pizza is a pizza that's just a circle with no cuts made into it or I guess if you took a pizza-cutter and cut circles out of a another shape of pizza. The above two notes were written by a malevolent artificial intelligence, and as such are not part of Every Damn Thing canon. The current entry was written by a benevolent artificial intelligence so it's cool. Pizza in a Cup is from the best scene in The Jerk. It's pizza in a cup that Bernadette Peters and Steve Martin eat. It's sold at the carnival. At one time there were two competing Pizza in a Cup businesses at the carnival, until one drove the other out of business. Phil, Jake and Jason rank radio edits (of songs), and vinyl records (which usually contain songs) on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Jason sings the praises of Kool-Aid pickles in the episode. Phil & Jake are sure Kool-Aid pickles are good but they look like sea slugs. Phil was right that Vincent Price's spoken-word part on Michael Jackson's “Thriller” didn't appear on the song's 7” single. It did appear in the music video, though. Phil talks about a song by Pink that refers to satellite radio. He had the artist wrong; it was the Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow". Radio stations censored the word "satellite" and we think it was just them flexing. There are three versions of “I Got 5 On It” by Luniz: the original one with explicit lyrics, the clean radio edit, and the Bay Area Ballas Remix.    "Get Low" by Lil Jon& The East Side Boyz got heavy radio play using an edit that had a lot of profanity taken out, but they got to say "skeet" (which is slang for ejaculation) many times. Lil' Jon also apparently ran a label called Skeet Skeet Records. Phil mentions that the radio edit of “Country Grammar” by Nelly really helped Nelly crossover cause it was built on a children's singalong although the song was talking about a drive-by shooting with an Armsel Striker "Street Sweeper" which is an automatic shotgun. In the episode, Phil doesn't know the full name of the weapon but he had the right idea. Phil talks about the end of the first act of Scarface which is his favorite part of the movie. We talk about “Money For Nothing” by Dire Straits. The guy from Dire Straits also wrote “Private Dancer” by Tina Turner. Can you play a gold record? Most gold or platinum records are colored vinyl and you can play them but, like Phil speculates, it's usually a random record that's been painted so if you buy Bruce Springsteen's Human Touch platinum record and play it, it might be Legs by ZZ Top. Taylor Swift's album Evermore is the one Jake talks about but can't remember the name. ALSO DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE:demolition derbies * “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell * “Truth Hurts” by Lizzo * “Night Moves” by Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band * “MacArthur Park” by Donna Summer * “Every Little Step” by Bobby Brown * “Back that Thang Up” by Juvenile * intro to “Back that Azz Up” * “Dre Day” by Dr. Dre * “Let's Get it Started In Here” by Black Eyed Peas * “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” by Geto Boys * metatextuality * “Dope Man” by NWA * “Humpty Dance” by Digital Underground * Showgirls * “Tutti Frutti” by Little Richard * McRib * daylight saving time * “1999” by Prince * “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick * speed limits * Cannonball Run * public humiliation * fast fashion * cassette tapes * compact discs * Spinderella * Crocs * books * Allman & Woman * podcasts * ducks * Bill PaxtonBelow are the Top Ten and Bottom Top items on List of Every Damn Thing as of this episode (for the complete up-to-date list, go here):TOP TEN: Dolly Parton - person interspecies animal friends - idea sex - idea Clement Street in San Francisco - location Prince - person It's-It - food Cher - person Pee-Wee Herman - fictional character Donald Duck - fictional character Hank Williams - person BOTTOM TEN:177. Phil made an effort, but couldn't figure out why The Great White Fleet was white. In the episode, Jake refers to the yeast that people put on movie theater popcorn as “brewers yeast”. Some might call this “nutritional yeast” which is technically different but often used in the same way. Nutritional yeast is probably more popular for popcorn these days. Martinelli's uses the apple-shaped juice containers that Phil loves. The time where Ice-T drank apple juice in Evil E's car is recounted in his song “Midnight”. Jackie Gleason played Buford T. Justice in Smokey & the Bandit. That movie and Cannonball Run both rely on speed limits for their plot. Here's El Rocketeer from In Living Color. It's not especially funny.  Phil brings up people that are sexually excited by Tony the Tiger, What's happened is more complicated than what Phil says. Kellogg's is constantly baiting furries by putting sexy Tony the Tiger content out in the world and then acting shocked when they get worked up about it. We think for a lot of furries, Tony the Tiger was their gateway into being a furry in the first place so it really resonates. Here's a summary by the journalists at Huffington Post. Maybe even see them play live.If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Here's the classic Eddie Murphy ice cream truck bit that taught us everything we know. Mister Softee is a soft-serve truck that drives around in the mid-Atlantic states. While trying to explain the business benefits of soft-serve, Phil refers to the movie The Founder, which is about McDonalds. One of the central issues in the movie is the original founders of McDonalds want to have real ice cream shakes but storing ice cream is very expensive due to the refrigeration. Soft serve ice cream is much cheaper because it doesn't need to be refrigerated while in transit or storage. A meager amount of research leads us to the stance that trucks (aka lorries) are different from vans. The racist version of “Turkey in the Straw” that Phil refers to was recorded in 1916, just a few years before Harry Burt created the first ice cream truck. So it follows that this version may be the one people knew in the early days of ice cream truckin'. Does sound travel further in warmer weather? There are scientists who will say it travels faster in the summer heat and humidity, but that it travels further in the winter. We think it's mostly due to having windows open in the summer. Does ice cream sell better on rainy days? This is some purely anecdotal BS that Phil heard in grade school from a guy who worked at an ice cream shop, and has accepted as the truth. He has no documented proof for this. He looked online but has found nothing that backs it up. When Jake talks about the melody from “Ice Cream Man” by Dru Down (featuring Luniz), he's talking about the main part of the song, not the intro featuring “Pop Goes the Weasel”. A few years after this song came out, Master P released a song by the same name (with a similar intro), but it's not nearly as catchy. Another song by a Bay Area rapper apparently played by some ice cream trucks is “Ice Cream” by Andre Nikatina, which is pretty much just a “Turkey In the Straw” remix. Here's the scene from Friday where the ice cream truck is used as a front for a drug dealer. Western Beef is a mid-Atlantic supermarket chain whose mascot is a cactus in a cowboy hat. Their old CEO had mafia ties. The location Phil was thinking about is at 44 Empire Blvd by the park. Fud is a brand of hot dogs from Mexico. Fuddhism is a restaurant with a goofy name in Truckee, CA. Junior's Cheesecake is a place where Matt likes to urinate. Christie's Jamaican Patties is now closed. It's described as beloved in the linked article so you know it wasn't just Phil that liked it. Taqueria Diana in Williamsburg is an outstanding place to get Mexican food (and mezcal). If you're hungry and in Brooklyn, go there. In fact, if you're anywhere in New York City, go there. The Williamsburg location is the best. Here's the EDT episode featuring Efrem Schulz where he helped us rank “Weird Al” Yankovic over Bruce Springsteen. EDT is one year old! Phil and Jake celebrate by ranking podcasts, ranked lists and metatextuality on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We don't talk about it in the episode, but we both watched Symbiopsychotaxiplasm, a noteworthy film dealing with metatextuality (though you could get a lot of the same effect from watching YouTube reaction videos or the Bo Burnham video where he reacts to himself). One thing that we enjoyed we enjoyed from Symbiopsychotaxiplasm was when a film crew member says that every husband and wife from the moment of birth are destined to say poorly written cliched banalities at each other and all they want to say is "you're cutting my balls off" and "you're not a real man". Phil mentioned a podcast where you can listen to old Knicks games along with commentary. He has no proof that such a podcast exists, maybe he dreamed it. He's listened to commentary of old games on Knicks Film School but not the actual audio broadcast. He's sure such a thing could exist though. Other podcasts mentioned include This American Life, Planet Money, Radiolab and WTF with Marc Maron. In one scene in Luca, the characters watch Big Deal on Madonna Street. BD on MS is a really influential crime/caper movie. Heist type movies seem like they're all either remakes of this movie or Rififi (which BD on MS itself seems like a response to). TV shows discussed include The Office, Fleabag, Moonlighting, Saturday Night Live, Frasier, Batman: The Animated Series and Watchmen. Songs discussed include “Something to Ride To” & “Freaky Tales” by Too $hort, “We Got the Beat” by The Go-Gos, “1999” by Prince, “The Ghost of Tom Joad” & “Dancing in the Dark” by Bruce Springsteen, “Tulsa Time” by Don Williams, “Hips Don't Lie” by Shakira, “Jackin' for Beats” by Ice Cube, “Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)” by Cinderella, “Whiskey Bent and Hellbound” by Hank Williams, Jr. and “Ramblin' Man” by Hank Williams. We talk a bit about the Grant Morrison run on the comic series Animal Man, Phil remembers issue #5 (“The Coyote Gospel”) where Wile E. Coyote is reimagined as a Christ figure who dies over and over again in our world to redeem his own. Bonkers shit. Jake mentions issue #26 (“Deus Ex Machina”), where Morrison himself appears in the comic. Jake also talks about Morrison's The Invisibles, which he hasn't read, but has heard about it containing some magic where the author trades places with one of the characters. for the record, Phil says that Morrison uses a non-gender binary pronoun but the author's own website uses he / him / his so Jake probably isn't guilty of misgendering. Jorge Luis Borges also dealt extensively with himself as a character. Here's the short piece we mentioned. He's maybe the most meta writer. The idea of Countryman and the Cinematograph seems to be "country people don't know that movies aren't real". The idea of people not knowing movies aren't real is fun, which is probably why so many people-- including your humble hosts-- repeat the probably-urban-legend of people running for cover during early screenings of Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat. In the back of Las Meninas you can see the painter, Diego Velázquez. Phil was trying to remember the Hal Hartley movie Flirt in which the same dialogue is used three different times. He tries to remember the name of this movie a couple times a year but It's kind of boring so it's difficult. Other movies discussed include The Princess Bride, The Truman Show, Deadpool, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Caddyshack, Watchmen, the Star Wars movies, The Matrix, Trading Places, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, the Wayne's World movies, Spaceballs, The Last Starfighter and Howard the Duck. 52. Caddyshack, Families

Shalon joins the EDT family to help Phil and Jake rank the 1980s comedy classic Caddyshack and the concept of families on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: There's some confusion during our conversation as to how the characters in The Blue Lagoon are related. While researching the matter, Jake was relieved to discover that they aren't siblings, but unsettled upon learning that they're cousins. We of course talk quite a bit about the sublime performance of  Rodney Dangerfield, especially his facial expressions (such as this hat reaction) and his dancing. Phil speculates that maybe Caddyshack was autobiographical. It was, but mostly pulled from Brian Doyle-Murray's experiences. From one of the better Caddyshack "things you didn't know" pages out there: "To write their screenplay, Ramis, Kenney, and Doyle-Murray locked themselves in a room and tried to recall everything they knew about or experienced at golf courses and country clubs growing up—most of which came from Doyle-Murray, who caddied at Indian Hill Country Club in the suburbs of Chicago as a kid." When talking about Mad Magazine, Phil couldn't remember the name of cartoonist Mort Drucker. Chevy Chase  looks like if his own Mort Drucker caricature came to life. In the Marx Brothers movies, the role of Margaret Dumont was to sell the Marx Brothers by reacting to their bullshit.  Phil says "empty pool" when he means to say "drained pool" politics while talking about The Sum of Us by Heather Mcgee. Here's the scene from Natural Born Killers that features Rodney. It's disturbing, but it's also the best part of the movie. We mention “Weird Al” Yankovic. There's none of this in the podcast, but we think you should know that Phil's wife Beth continues to talk about her new character, a terrifying vision from the future Weird AI. He's a song parody writing artificial intelligence at the end of time. Phil and Jake rank the 80s blockbuster E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Reese's Ultimate Peanut Butter Lovers Cup on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Here's the Eddie Murphy bit that Phil talks about at the beginning of the episode. Steven Spielberg projects mentioned include Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Night Skies, 1941, Raiders of the Lost Ark and his remake of War of the Worlds.  Other movies talked about include Never Been Kissed (which Phil's mother really enjoyed on an airplane), The Goonies, Star Wars, Howard the Duck, Back to the Future, The Last Starfighter, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, Trading Places, The Truman Show, Flashdance and Enter the Dragon. Melissa Mathison is not related to Richard Matheson, whose work Spielberg had adapted. Their last names are homonyms, that's why Phil was confused. Melissa Mathison also wrote Kundun, The BFG and Indian in the Cupboard. Phil wasn't trying to steal autism valor but his point got mangled. There's a kind of boy that started showing up in movies around this time. The other example Phil could think of was the kid from D.A.R.Y.L. and the kid from Cloak and Dagger (played by the same kid who played Elliot in E.T.). In the past child actors were usually more anglo-looking. Maybe it boils down to Spielberg having enough pull to cast someone who looks like his own kids. For the record, we don't want to disparage New Age bullshit. C. Thomas Howell has a small role in E.T. We like when someone's name is also a sentence. It's not such a big deal though since it's a stage name. E.T. was produced by "Amblin Productions" and of course they didn't have the logo of the bike in front of the moon at the time, since it comes from E.T. Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman is the book Phil talks about. Erika Eleniak played Eliott's classmate and, as an adult, jumps out of a cake in Under Siege (but Phil forgets her name in the episode). Oops! All Berries is a foundational concept that we never tire of discussing. Here's the Chris Gaines VH1 Behind the Music that we failed to consider in last week's episode. Phil, Jake and Jason are joined by returning champion singer-songwriter Dave Hause to rank the questionable experiment Chris Gaines on the List of Every Damn Thing. Plus we re-rank sex!Follow Dave on Instagram (@davehause), Twitter (@hausedave) and Facebook (DaveHauseMusic). You can find his songs on Spotify & Apple Music. If you're in Europe, here's the info on Dave's upcoming Germany / Austria shows. Most dates are sold out, so get on it for the ones that aren't! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We make some references to ASMR, which stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (sometimes Auto Sensory Meridian Response). It's not always, or maybe not even usually, a sex thing. Kink-shaming is something Phil's always trying not to do. “Asparagus Tarzan”(Spargeltarzan) is a German slang term of endearment / insult equivalent to “stringbean” or “beanpole” in English. Here's some etymology. The name comes from a description of famous skinny German footballer, Hans Bongartz. “Friends in Low Places” was written by Dewayne Blackwell and Earl Bud Lee. As expected, there's nothing on the internet saying that either of them didn't spend all their songwriting proceeds on taking their family to the movies.  We discuss a few male celebrities with “can I speak to the manager” haircuts, including The Goo-Goo Dolls' Johnny Rzeznik, Country singer Keith Urban and Criss Angel.  We go into some detail about the CD booklet pics from the album Garth Brooks in… The Life of Chris Gaines, including the one featuring his creamy hammies. The similarity between Gaines and Zoolander is uncanny but we think they're both going for the same thing. It's like how calculus was invented by Newton and Leibniz at the same time. We talk about how the rapper Spice 1 sometimes switches mid-song into a dancehall influenced persona named Reggaengsta. A good example is from Clip & the Trigga. Luke the Drifter was an alter-ego that Hank Williams used for more explicitly religious material. Here's a little poem/sermon that's maybe a little ahead of its time, "Too Many Parties and Too Many Pals". Hank Williams, Jr. was apparently given the nickname Bocephus by his father, as he rocked in the cradle.  We talk a bit about Eminem's alter-ego Slim Shady. Here's a link to Feminem, who may or may not be related. Here's Chris Tucker in a recent standup special talking about Blade himself. We mention George Clooney, whose friends (aka Jason) know him as the “Cloontang”. Here's the Childish Gambino cover of Chris Gaines'  “Lost in You”. We talk about the Greg Album / Cher project Allman & Woman. Greg Allman has yet to be ranked on the List of Everything but his ex-wife Cher can currently be found at #7.  The Jay-Z / R. Kelly album is called Best of Both Worlds. He and his best friend Apple live in an apartment and deal with various problems. Everyone they know is food. It's strange because their friend Falafel has ground onions inside of him and they never mention it. It's like Pixar's Cars where it's best not to think about it too much. Here's some examples of the rules of anthropomorphic food on the show. Sitcoms discussed in this episode include Cheers, 30 Rock, Seinfeld, The IT Crowd and Peepshow. Phil also brings up That Mitchell & Webb Look, which isn't sit but is com. We were right in assuming Kelsey Grammer hung out with Robin Williams. It turns out they were roommates at Julliard. It's possible they may have used cocaine together. Here's the article Beth mentions about Grammer's problematic politics putting the Frasier reboot at risk. When Jake says the character of Daphne Moon reminds him of Cathy, this is what he's talking about. There's some talk of how Julia-Louis Dreyfus / Elaine changed throughout the course of Seinfeld. It's possible when Phil said this what really was happening was that he himself was growing into manhood and began to look at JLD differently. Here's some fish-throwing at Pike Place Market. Our Black Frasier discussion includes the one on 30 Rock as well as Phoebe Robinson podcast. Eirinie doesn't think Choppin' Broccoli is funny but Jake still does. Here's Monica Bellucci in a latex dress from The Matrix movies. She wears more than one so here's a video of all Monica Bellucci content from those films, compiled by someone operating with one hand. Most of Jake & Beth's research on the royal family was done by watching The Crown on Netflix. Jake also listened to the Prince Harry interview on Dax Sheppard's podcast. Phil & Jake are joined by old friend (and fellow Pomolita Junior High School survivor) Sarah Walsh to rank the 1983 movie Flashdance, middle school, and sandwiches on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We chat briefly about the 90s sitcom Sister, Sister, which leads to Phil wonder if there was a TV adaptation of the movie Sister Act, but he was probably thinking of Sister Kate. Nuns used to be much more common in popular culture; there are fewer than one-third as many in America now than there were in the 1960s. We discuss depictions of breakdancing in popular culture, including the 1984 movie Breakin', which is perhaps what Phil was thinking of when talking about the theme of street dance vs. classical dance. We also mention the sequel Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, which came out later in the same year. Micheal Jackson moonwalking at the Grammys happened in 1983 (the year Flashdance came out). The song “What a Feeling” by Irene Cara was  produced by Father of Disco Giorgio Moroder. The music video for the song perfectly demonstrates the marriage of MTV and Hollywood in the 80s; see also “When Doves Cry” by Prince (from Purple Rain), “Footloose”, and pretty much any movie from the era produced by Don Simpson & Jerry Bruckheimer. Phil wonders if no-nudity strip clubs were really a common thing in the 80s, or if they only existed in movies like Flashdance and Tango & Cash.  In Queens in the early 2000s there was a place like that  under the N Train in Astoria.  Dames is a 1934 movie that has some really amazing dance sequences but it's mostly done with editing. Phil notes that the music video for “Papa Don't Preach” by Madonna is similar in imagery and overall style style to Flashdance. Could Madonna have played the lead in the film? In the climax of the movie Akeela and the Bee you don't see her spell out the final word “pulchritude" but you see the people in her life, including Angela Basset, Curtis Armstrong and Laurence Fishburne spell the word out. It's great. Phil wanted something like that at the end of Flashdance. So there's a lot of judgment baked into the word. It's not exactly a slur but it's not real descriptive. Florida Georgia Line is a “Country music act” for example that fits the bill but we doubt if you asked them they'd say Bro-Country is their genre. Who knows, maybe they would.   Morgan Wallen broke covid quarantine and got (temporarily) canceled from hosting Saturday Night Live, and then later got drunk and shouted some racial slurs which got him canceled in general.  Our mouths start to hurt from just saying the words Sour Patch Kids Cereal. Sour Patch Kids Ice Cream is a little less painful. Piggly-Wiggly was, in fact, the first modern grocery store with checkout stands, individually price-marked items and shopping carts. In the episode, we reveal our befuddlement with the correct pronunciation of “shaman”. According to Cambridge Dictionary, in the UK it rhymes with “layman” and in the US it rhymes with “ramen”. Seagal movies that we discuss include Under Siege, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, Exit Wounds (co-starring DMX) and On Deadly Ground (here's the environmentalist sermon at the end of it). Here's Seagal with Valdimir Putin. Here he is giving a samurai sword to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Here's him and Sheriff Joe Arapaio (we're not sure if this is before or after they allegedly killed a puppy with a tank while shooting Steven Seagal: Lawman). The full name of Seagal's conspiracy thriller novel is The Way of the Shadow Wolves: The Deep State and the Highjacking of America. His album is called Songs from the Crystal Cave.
