We're honored to have guest speaker Katie Cannon with us this week at Palms Church. Katie is a global worker with many years of experience serving communities across the globe. She is currently working with and serving immigrants in Barcelona, Spain. Katie gives us all an incredible challenge when it comes to our "what ifs". What if it doesn't work out? What if I fail? But there's another "what if" that silences all the rest.
Military married to military has its own sets of benefits and challenges. On one hand, you have great benefits and income but on the other, you have separations and a whole lot of planning and prep to make married and military life work. In this episode, I talk to Certified Financial Planner and veteran, Katie Cannon. Katie is a fee-only financial planner and founder of Money Pilot Financial Advisor. She helps military service members and federal employees envision and build their best financial life. Katie served in the Army as a Black Hawk helicopter pilot and now enjoys riding her horses and life on the farm. Katie shares advice on how dual-military couples can best plan their finances during and after service. She talks about the best thing dual-military couples can do to prepare for retirement and how to plan for the additional expenses of being married to another service member. As well as some considerations you may not know you should be taking with your money now, so it's not a problem later. Have you wanted to dip your toe into Facebook ads but have been unsure where to start? This episode is for you! Katie Cannon has an expert level of experience in Facebook ads (she managed ads for Lowe's, for example!), yet she also has a gift for breaking it down into simple terms for the rest of us to understand. Plus, she's a horse girl so she gets you! Show Notes (also known as “Where to read a quick summary of what we talked about here and get links I mentioned.”) are over at Stormlily.com/77

Our conversation today centers on the humility it takes to actually listen to a different perspective than your own. Maybe listening with an open mind is something we can practice. Rev. Terrance Thomas believes that God is on the side of the oppressed – those that experience injustice because of race, gender, or sexual orientation. Ultimately, though, he believes the pattern he’s seen in the scriptures: that God will step in to help/heal/bless AFTER we’ve gotten up ourselves. So, that’s what he encourages us to do first. Then there's the practice of Black joy and Hope as resistance. The whole idea of oppression is to keep people down. So when people continue to shine and live fully, it is an act of resistance to find happiness and comfort despite tribulations. Meet Rev. Terrance Thomas The Reverend Terrance L. Thomas is an Itinerant Elder with the African Methodist Church and Senior Pastor of Bethel AME Church in Champaign, IL. In addition to his pastor role, he has worked as a hospital chaplain with Advocate Aurora and Carle Health. He sits on several community boards including Champaign Country Christian Health Center, CU Trauma and Resiliency, and HV Neighborhood Transformation. He is also the Executive Director of the Bridgewater-Sullivan Community Life Center. A dedicated liberation theologian and unapologetic Black Nationalist, Rev. Thomas received his undergraduate degree in Inner City Studies with a minor in Sociology from Northeastern Illinois University and a Masters of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. In his spare time, Rev. Thomas enjoys theater, jazz, the sultry soul of 70's music, video games, political discourse with a sip of whiskey, baseball, professional wrestling, and community service projects. He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc; a proud father to five beautiful children; and he loves to quote Zora Neale Hurston when she says, “If you ain't got it, you can't show it. If you do got it, you can't hide it.” Find Rev. Thomas on Facebook. Amanda Hambrick Ashcraft is a white mother raising three white kids, a 5 year old daughter and 7 year old twin boys, in the East Village of NYC. She was born and raised in a small town in Kentucky, went to college in Birmingham, AL and to seminary in Richmond, VA. She has lived in NYC for 13 years. Amanda is a movement builder and leader who writes, speaks and studies at the intersection of race, faith, politics, feminism, and parenting. Amanda is the founder of Raising Imagination, an online movement platform that looks at the evolution of social issues through the lens of imagination. Her platform is largely dedicated to the necessary work white parents must undergo to raise their white kids as anti-racist and how to involve kids in advocacy. Her work has been cited in CNN, Refinery29, the Wall Street Journal, WNBC, and Crooked Media. Amanda is also the Executive Minister for Justice, Education & Movement Building at Middle Church, a historic, multicultural inclusive church in the East Village. In today’s conversation, Amanda and Alexis discuss our perceptions of the REAL differences between the American South and NYC, early conversations we had (or didn’t have) about race in our childhood homes, and our definitions of activism. Amanda shares why she brings her own kids to protests, what anti-racist parenting looks and feels like in everyday life (including breaking down the importance of J.Lo and Shakira’s 2019 superbowl halftime performance and discussing the wonders of Dolly Parton with her children), why it is the responsibility of all white parents to talk to their kids about race and why parenting is inherently political. Today’s episode is the first of two conversations featuring Amanda. Look out for the release of part two in the coming days! My guest for this episode is Meta Commerse. Meta is a poet, a novelist, and a healer. My initial motivation for this interview was and still is as a continuation of my series on Racial Reconciliation, because Meta offers a class through her Story Medicine Wisdom School titled, 'Story Medicine for Racial Healing.' But as I learned that Meta was a poet and novelist and had developed this resource she calls story medicine, I wanted to talk with her about each of those aspects--her art, her development of story medicine, and the use of her art and story medicine is facilitating racial healing. As you will learn, Meta prefers to speak of racial healing rather than racial reconciliation. It is because of her reasoning on this issue that I am changing the name of my ongoing series. Consequently, this episode is the first of three. In this episode I talk with Meta about her story as it lead to her being poet and novelist and you will get to hear Meta read some of her poems and a selection from her novel. Meta is the author of six books: Landscapes of Abuse (2001), Rainsongs: Poems of a Woman's Life (2012), The Mending Time, a novel (2014), Blues Doula, poems by Meta Commerse (2019), Womaning, a memoir (forthcoming), and Diamonds and Pyramids: Story Medicine for Racial Healing (forthcoming). You can learn more about Meta, her Story Medicine Wisdom School, the courses, lectures, and internships she offers in that school, the Community Action Projects offered through The Race Relations Station, and purchase Meta's books through her website, storymedicineworldwide.com. I want to offer a special word of thanks to Carol and Tony Asiaghi for letting Meta and I use their beautiful and peaceful West Asheville Garden Retreat and Sanctuary to record these three interviews. Jacob is a trickster, and whether any given trick was just or right is a hard question to ask. But could trickery be a blessing? Could a willingness to bend the rules save lives? Is this story a witness to what the late scholar Katie Cannon called “God’s Fierce Whimsy?"
Every follower of Jesus is called to share His generously. Whether that is through words, acts of service, or empowering others to go by giving financially, we are all called to missions in three ways: PRAY - GIVE - GO. We call it Thanks - Missions Sunday. Today we celebrate the mission call with special guest speaker, Missionary to Indonesia, Katie Cannon.
Katie Cannon is the education director of Carolina Tiger Rescue, North Carolina’s only federally accredited wild cat sanctuary. A federally accredited sanctuary means Carolina Tiger Rescue is a 501-c3 non-profit; it does not buy, sell, or trade any of its animals or their parts; it does not do any breeding; and it is a no-contact facility. Through their education programming and guided tours, they help visitors understand the downfalls and dangers of private ownership, as well as the realities behind cub petting and other exploitation of wild animals. Dr. Lisa Thompson, Dr. Candace Shields, Dr. Leslie Callahan, and Dr. Valerie Cooper, moderated by Tamisha Tyler, respond to questions concerning the theological tradition of womanism and the legacy of womanist scholar Dr. Katie Cannon. The panelists discuss embracing one’s particularity and whole self, promoting survival and quality of life, confronting misogyny, and the use of traditional and secular sources in theology. The Black Public Theology Symposium was held at Fuller in October 2018. The symposium sought to bring the Black academy and the Black church into dialogue and explore ways to distill Black theology and make it accessible to the Black church and community. The Rev. Dr. Paula Owens Parker is a Presbyterian minister and senior program developer of Roots Matter. Though Roots Matter’s approach to generational healing is rooted in the traumatic experience of chattel slavery and the African American spirituality created out of that experience, it has a deep and powerful connection with other groups and cultures who have experienced historical trauma. Roots Matter: Healing History, Honoring Heritage, and Renewing Hope was published in July 2016. Dr. Parker received her Doctor of Ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary (San Anselmo, CA.). She is a professor of Spiritual Formation at Union Presbyterian Seminary (Richmond, VA.), is a retreat leader, spiritual director, and healing prayer minister. She's received many awards including the 2013 Union Presbyterian Seminary Black Alumni/ae Trailblazer Award. Dr. Parker takes her coffee with 100% pure, light amber maple syrup. Dr. Parker is the founder and former executive director of The Daughters of Zelophehad, Inc., an ecumenical Christian transitional housing program for women in crisis and their children. The Daughters of Zelophehad name came from Numbers 27:1-11 when Moses was dividing up the promised land. Moses protected the rights of these women when there was no male heir. Dr. Parker is also a co-founder of SOZO School of Christian Healing Prayer at Richmond Hill, an urban ecumenical retreat center, and co-founder of Seven Sisters Sharing Seven Sayings, a Good Friday service that is held each year in the Richmond metropolitan area. SOZO means to save or to heal in Greek. Both scholars and ministers in their own rights, Paula Parker and Katie Cannon are collaborating on the development of a Center of Womanist Leadership. United Faith Leaders and The Coffeepot Fellowship look forward to that exciting project which Dr. Parker discusses in this episode. In conclusion, as you consider these two quotes from our interview, we urge the reading of Dr. Parker's book, Roots Matter: Healing History, Honoring Heritage, and Renewing Hope, for people of all backgrounds.
