“This episode is infamous as far as bad behavior goes,” says Christi. It's so full of offenses neither she nor Kelly can believe it's still airing, especially with the way the world has changed in the ten years since it first aired. Kaya and her daughter Nicaya arrive to audition to be on the ALDC, or really, as the other Dance Moms realize but can't break the fourth wall to say, to be on the show. Producers were always threatening to replace the Moms with new people if they didn't cooperate, and Kaya and Nicaya were the first to come from far away to join the team/show. The group dance is its own source of cringe. The girls, including Paige, who is trying to learn the dance as her broken foot heals, portray children living in a mental institution. Abby waits until the last minute to include Nicaya in the dance when the girls perform it at Nationals in L.A. Nia's solo is a tribute to Josephine Baker and Abby's attempts to emulate it–she only ever attempted Nia's choreography, Kelly points out–makes everyone react somewhere between a laugh and a shudder. Christi utters the phrase she regrets more than anything she has ever said on the show. She and Kelly explain why their husbands were the true unsung heroes of the show and the rare moment of sympathy they have for Abby in this episode. Quotes“It's amazing to me what an example of bad behavior across the board this show is and people continue to watch it…We wouldn't be doing 90% of the shit that we did.” (28:12-28:31 | Christi and Kelly)“Why does everybody just get to walk in and be in our dances?...You know I'm never on Abby's team, but I would be so pissed if somebody told me to put a kid in that I had never worked with right before Nationals.” (43:04-43:25 | Christi)“Melissa is asking Kaya about her previous relationships, and this actually made me laugh. She says, ‘What made you go from a man to a woman? And I am howling, because I know Melissa, and I know what Melissa likes about a man.” (1:10:11-1:10:29 | Christi)“Everybody makes Paige out to be stupid and can't ever learn or remember anything. She learned the dance in half the time as everybody else did. She punched herself in her face just as well as anybody else.” (1:08:02-1:08:16 | Christi and Kelly) LinksSubscribe to us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC50aSBAYXH_9yU2YkKyXZ0w Subscribe to our Patreon: www.patreon.com/backtothebarreThank you to Ashley Jana for allowing us to use Electricity!! What a smile! What a sweetheart! Oh yeah, Walfredo Reyes Jr. is also a spectacular drummer/percussionist. Seeing Wally in action last month killing it with Chicago, and then meeting him afterward clinched that he's the trifecta. This time with him on Game Changers makes clear all three, even if he didn't lift a stick or slap a cajón. Wally brought his A+ game, treating us to stories about his musical royal family. From his maternal grandfather, his brilliant and accomplished father, Walfredo Reyes Sr., who played with Josephine Baker, Louie Bellson, Bobby Darin, Dionne Warwick, and Debbie Reynolds to name a few, and passed on the percussion/drummer whiz gene to his talented son, who also played with Debbie Reynolds, as well as Ricki Lee Jones, Richard Marx, Sergio Mendes, Smokey Robinson, Boz Scaggs… but we got the stories about his time with Santana, Traffic, then Steve Winwood, Lindsay Buckingham and how he got to Chicago, with a little help from his brother, Daniel, of the Zach Brown Band. We talked Wally's serendipitous twist with Chicago, this band he adores and has been a part of for 13 years - the woman he loves and met thanks to them, how the pandemic thwarted their wedding but not their marriage, their idyllic life off the beaten trail, Wally's passion for all music, his influences, heroes, side projects, his amazing kids, and perhaps a few dreams he's yet to live. I have no doubt he'll manifest them. Wally's career has run the gamut of every conceivable genre of music and he's seemingly mastered them all. As he has the gift of grace, kindness, warmth, passion, enthusiasm, and genuine charm. My heartfelt apologies for being under the weather and careless setting up the Live––last week's title still haunting the space, and after 4 hours of trying discovering there's not a damn thing I can do about it. I owe Wally big time for this, and for that drum/percussion solo, he shares with Ray Yslas in the Chicago show. Wow. Just wow! Chicago tours 8 months of the year, please do yourself a favor and don't miss them, and check out all the other cool stuff in Wally's World. For all things Walfredo: walfredoreyesjr.com I had such a great time with Wally! Come for the fun, stay for the inspiration. Celebrities, by definition, live life out in the open. Spies, on the other hand, are happiest in the shadows. But rules are made to be broken. In this True Spies trilogy, Sophia Di Martino tells the stories of three spies whose fame and fortune were no obstacle to their espionage. Whether they used their notoriety to their advantage, or operated in spite of it, these glamorous part-time spooks had a hand in the clandestine history of the 20th century. In the third and final instalment of Celebrity Spies, triple-threat superstar Josephine Baker weaponizes her unstoppable charisma in the service of the French resistance during WW2. Armed only with charm and a fierce passion for freedom, Josephine goes up against Hitler's Gestapo in a crucial mission to smuggle secret intelligence out of Occupied France. There are advantages to being one's own boss, and one of those is that when Frau Corona (AKA Madame Covid) comes to visit, one can reshuffle and recalibrate one's plans to fit the exigencies of the moment. Hence today's episode, a watered-down version of the larger topic (Black Emigré Pop Singers) which I intended to address today. Instead, I offer you many of your favorite Black pop artists of the 1950s and 1960s performing songs in German. Some of these are versions of chart toppers with new German words; some of them are songs specifically composed for these artists for the German market. The common variable of these songs, whether they are known or unknown, is that they are all delightful, and that one of those delights is seeing how these artists come to terms with the difficulties of the German language. Featured are jazz singers (Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald), pop groups (The Supremes, The Temptations) and solo artists (Nat King Cole, Marvin Gaye, Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt, and Dionne Warwick). Ms. Warwick is further featured in a number of less-familiar classics by the late Burt Bacharach which she recorded not only in German, but also in French and Italian. (Say it with me now: Geh'! Geh'!… Geh'! Geh'!) Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly support at whatever level you can afford. Josephine Baker was a gorgeous, young, black singer and dancer in the early 20's. She renounced her US citizenship because of racial injustice and became a French citizen. Things weren't perfect in Paris, but audiences were not segregated and she enjoyed significant success. During WW2, she leveraged her fame to pass secrets to the French resistance when the Nazis were trying to completely take over France. Or the story of Josephine Baker's onetime girlfriend. Violette Morris was a famous footballer, athlete, and French war hero. She was later accused of being a Nazi Spy. She was definitely one of the most outspoken #LGBTQ women of the 1920's and 1930's. Nazi or not, she was a gifted athlete and pioneer of women's rights. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-mcglynn/message
African Americans have been present in Paris for centuries, with a significant number of them living in the city during the early 20th century. Many were artists, writers, and musicians who were drawn to the city's cultural scene. The period between the two World Wars is often referred to as the "Harlem Renaissance in Paris" because of the number of Black artists, writers, and musicians who lived and worked there at the time. They were part of a larger community of expatriates, which included many other Americans and Europeans. This period saw the emergence of jazz and the birth of the literary genre of the "Negro novel". Some famous Black Americans in Paris during this time include James Baldwin, Josephine Baker, and Duke Ellington. Welcome back, as we wrap up the life of the one and only, Josephine Baker. Josey was one of the biggest stars in the world, but when she saw injustice during the lead-up to World War II, she knew she couldn't sit by and do nothing. So, she became a spy. Josephine Baker, the spy. We like the sound of that! After World War II, Josephine Baker continued to perform and speak out against injustice. She was an important figure in the civil rights movement of the United States, In 1963, she was one of the few women to speak at the March on Washington. Personally invited by Marting Luther King Jr. Josey's personal life also took just as many dramatic twists and turns. While she suffered personal tragedy, she also became the mother to twelve children. Josephine would later go on to be one of only six women interred in the Pantheon. Kind of a big deal. We hope you enjoyed this episode about the later life of Josephine Baker. Dancing at the Louvre is part of Faith Ringgold's series of 12 story quilts called The French Collection and it is on the AP Art History list (it is one of 250 artworks American high school students study for AP Art History courses, which give them the chance to earn college credit). In her Dancing at the Louvre quilt, Ringgold is writing the story of Willa Marie Simone, a fictional character that seems to be inspired a bit by Ringgold and her mother. Willa moves to Paris, meets major figures like Henri Matisse, the iconic artist, Josephine Baker, the American born French singer, dancer and actress who became the first black woman to star in a major motion picture and Rosa Parks, the legend of the civil rights movement. Over the series of 12 story quilts, known as the French Collection, Willa Marie Simone goes on many adventures and becomes a successful artist and businesswoman. In Ringgold's life, she had been taught to admire the achievements of men like Pablo Picasso who innovated by copying African masks. In her education, she was told to study art education because fine arts was only for men. She looked at all of these societal bariers and envisioned a figure who could push past them. In Ringgold's story, the protagonist is a black woman and the white male european artists, have a walk on role. The Louvre is an iconic cultural institution, home to some of the finest artworks in the history of the world and Ringgold's Willa Marie Simone feels unintimidated. She joyously flouts conventions and dances in the hallowed halls.
Josephine Baker was a successful entetaininer who redefined what it meant to be a black performer and took on the role of activist during World War II. She had a rough upbringing in Missouri where she was responsible for helping provide for the family by the time she was 8-years-old. Her biological father wasn't in the picture and she didn't have a good relationship with her mother. She ended up getting married VERY young and 4-ish times throughout her life. Once she made it to Paris she dominated the the stage and French critics referred to her as "Black Venus." She joined the French Resistance and was heavily awarded for her efforts. She also received awards in America for fighting against racism, specifically in New York City. Visit TracysDog.com to get your OG Flow and use code "Homance" for 15% off your purchase. Writer Damien Lewis returns to discuss his latest book about the beautiful Josephine Baker. She has found everything she wanted in France, but soon the country is over run by Nazis. In her day, Josephine Baker was one of the most famous women in the world. Fans recognized the superstar singer, actress, and dancer everywhere she went, particularly on the streets of Paris, where she often walked a pet cheetah on a diamond leash. Why would anyone think such a conspicuous person might make the perfect spy? Author Damien Lewis set out to answer that question in his latest book, “Agent Josephine: American Beauty, French Hero, British Spy.” It chronicles Baker's remarkable career as an agent for French counterintelligence during WWII. Baker participated in numerous clandestine missions, and her work informed British and U.S. intelligence as well. Baker left the United States in the Jim Crow era and was embraced by French audiences. But she became a target of Nazi propagandists. When Germany invaded France, Baker devoted herself to the Resistance and the Allies' cause. It turned out that her performing talents were well suited to work as an intelligence agent. Baker used her connections to get close to Axis VIPs, including in the Italian government, who didn't know she was passing valuable details from their conversations back to her French compatriots. She used her extraordinary fame as a cover, at times hiding secret documents practically in plain sight while on tour. Lewis and Shane Harris discussed Baker's remarkable and little known espionage career, which reveals much about the inner life of one of the 20th Century's biggest stars. This week, Mario and Twenty welcome creator, coach, and facilitator Black to the Expression Appraisal Table. If you ain't got it, you ain't got it. The theory is brilliant? Watch as Mario and Twenty are joined by Boston native and New Orleans based creator, coach, and facilitator Black to discuss the meaning and origin of Faking The Funk. Black share their views of aunthenticity, work, and spirit. We explore the love of artist's work in Central Africa, the creation of Funk music, and the Spike Lee classic film, White Men Can't Jump, and it's impact on the phrase. Black (they/them) is a renaissance, drawing inspiration from artists like Josephine Baker and Ntozake Shange, who were unapologetic and unbound in their creative expression. They are a Black, genderqueer creator, coach, and facilitator currently based in New Orleans. Through anti/interdisciplinary creative practice, Black transcends the boundaries between art and form to create space for healing, discovery and transformation. They create within the realm of Afrofuturism and spirituality, conjuring new worlds, facilitating deep connection, and cultivating a sense of collectivity, wholeness and embodied wisdom. It is through this work that Black strives towards liberation. We mark the death on July 25, 1984 – 38 years ago today – of the American Rhythm and Blues singer Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton. Born on December 11, 1926, she died in Los Angeles of both heart and liver disease brought on by alcohol abuse. According to Gillian Gaar, writing in She's a Rebel: The History of Women in Rock & Roll (Seal Press, 1992), during the brief period of her final illness, Thornton went from 450 pounds (Big Momma!) to 95 pounds, a weight loss of some 355 pounds. Thornton scored her one-and-only hit when, on August 13, 1952, she recorded a brand-new, 12-bar blues song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller entitled Hound Dog. Released by Peacock Records in February 1953, Big Mama Thornton's Hound Dog sold over 500,000 copies and spent fourteen weeks on the Rhythm and Blues charts, seven of those fourteen weeks at number one. Thornton's recording is linked below: (By the way: please ignore the photo of Josephine Baker at the top of the link; Big Momma's left leg was bigger than all of Madame Baker.) Thornton's recording of Hound Dog was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013 […] The post Music History Monday: Under the Covers first appeared on Robert Greenberg.

Prior to WWII, Josephine Baker was a music hall diva renowned for her singing and dancing, her beauty and sexuality, and she was the highest paid female performer in Europe. When the Nazis seized Paris she was banned from the stage along with all "negroes and Jews"- but she refused to return to America- instead, she vowed to stay and fight the Nazis with every fiber of her being. She became a master spy for the French, serving British and Allied intelligence as well, providing crucial information she was able to get through her network of important contacts and her ability to travel when she began performing again in southern France and neutral countries. Agent Josephine has been optioned for a multi episode tv series. This interview with Damien Lewis will keep WWII and espionage fans glued to their listening devices.
