Send us a textWe're excited to celebrate our 200th episode of Art Wank with the incredible Idris Murphy During our visit to Idris' home studio, we had a captivating conversation about his journey as an artist and his thought-provoking philosophies on art and painting. Idris is a bold, well-read artist who constantly pushes the limits of his practice, and our discussion was truly inspiring. A big thank you to Idris for his time.Idris is represented by King Street on William  in Sydney‘Idris Murphy is a contemporary figurative landscape painter born in 1949, Sydney. He graduated from National Art School with a diploma in Painting in 1971, and then became the institution's Head of Drawing in 1997.Idris completed a Doctor of Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong in NSW and a Graduate Diploma (Education), SCAE, in Sydney whilst he was Head of Painting at the College of Fine Art from 1988-2007. In 1982, Murphy was a lecturer at the University of Wollongong, NSW, and was instrumental in establishing the printmaking department of the newly founded School of Creative Arts. From 1976-1977, Idris completed his Postgraduate studies in painting & printmaking at Winchester College of Art, UK. To date, Murphy has had 40 solo exhibitions across Australia and internationally. Idris' survey show I & Thou: Survey Exhibition 1986-2008 was exhibited at King Street Gallery in Sydney, Hazlehurst Regional Art Gallery and Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery, NSW. In 2022, a major retrospective of Idris' work Backblocks was exhibited at the ANU Drill Hall Gallery from August 16, 2022 which then travelled to Orange Regional Art Gallery and the National Trust S.H. Ervin Gallery, in 2023.Idris has been represented by King Street Gallery since 1993.Intrinsic to Murphy's art making process is an engagement with the environment which surrounds him, and by extension, his en plein air practice. Murphy explains that his ‘expeditions' through the Australian bush ‘offer him enough to last a lifetime'. (Catalogue Essay, 2017, Gregor Sloss) His work aims to ‘transform an already imagined landscape' (Sloss, 2017). Murphy's practice attempts to mirror Indigenous respect for the Australian landscape. Murphy suggests that an Indigenous Australian landscape painting is a reinvigoration of the landscape and is sustained by its Dreamings.Murphy's work can be found in a number of public, state and corporate collections such as the ANU University Drill Hall Collection, Art Gallery of New South Wales, State Library NSW, Artbank, Allens Collection, and the Westpac Collection.Idris' studio is located in Kurnell, Sydney.' - King st Gallery website

Only two years later Mick was alongside Officer A "Ben" at the Lindt Cafe Siege that was broadcasted live over every media outlet. The Lindt Café siege was a terrorist attack that occurred on 15–16 December 2014 when a lone gunman, Man Haron Monis, held hostage ten customers and eight employees of a Lindt Chocolate Café in the APA Building in Martin Place, Sydney, Australia. The Sydney siege led to a 16-hour standoff, after which a gunshot was heard from inside and police officers from the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU) stormed the café. Hostage Tori Johnson was killed by Monis and hostage Katrina Dawson was killed by a police bullet ricochet in the subsequent raid. Monis was also killed. Three other hostages and a police officer were injured by police gunfire during the raid. Leaving the TOU fulltime unit in 2016 and moving to the North Coast and returned to general duties policing however in the part time tactical response capability regional NSW he was then involved in the Taree siege where the offender was killed by a tactical police officer. 'Colour, for me, is the main game' Idris Murphy tells me as we sit in his studio in Sydney's southern suburb of Kurnell, a stone's throw from Botany Bay. On various easels around the room are works in progress. His distinctive energetic brushstrokes, often using metallic paint, the carefully placed collage pieces and thin lines scratched into the wet surface are just part of what makes up his arresting work. And yes, colour takes centre stage - in this case bringing life to the landscape of the Northern Territory's East MacDonnell ranges which he has visited and revisited. Idris Murphy is one of Australia's leading landscape painters and his work sits between representation and abstraction. He was inspired from an early age by the work of Matisse but, as he later explored what it meant to paint the Australian landscape, it was the way the Indigenous artists saw the land that influenced him to take into account both traditions. In recognition of his career, the survey show 'Idris Murphy: BACKBLOCKS' has just opened at the Drill Hall Gallery in Canberra. Curated by gallery director Terence Maloon, the exhibition includes important works from the last 30 years of more than 50 years of work. The exhibition will also travel to Orange Regional Gallery and S.H Ervin Gallery and a monograph will be available in early 2023. Idris has won the Gallipoli Art prize, has exhibited in 40 solo shows and group shows including a previous major travelling survey exhibition in 2009-2010. His work is held in the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of NSW and other state and corporate collections. His love of literature, poetry and philosophy also comes through clearly in our conversation and you can find references to the works he mentioned in the podcast episode in the links below. I'll also be uploading a short video we filmed on the day of the interview onto the Youtube channel and this website in the coming weeks.  Idris is represented by King Street Gallery on William in Sydney. Gamilaroi poet and musician Luke Patterson takes us on a walk through Sydney's inner-western suburb Redfern, built on Gadigal land. Redfern, seen as the heart of Indigenous activism in Sydney, is Luke's homebase. After we grabbed a quick coffee, Luke told me all about his experiences of living here – as well as in Kurnell, about his idea of Country, about the blending of city -and urban sounds in his creative work, and last but not least, about his engagement in community projects, such as Ngana Barangarai, publishing poetry by inmates in Junee Correctional Centre. You will hear our conversation, as well as the sounds of the city. At times, the city sounds take over – if you find this unpleasant to listen to, I invite you to either let it wash over you, or skip ahead a few seconds while we turn a corner. Thanks for listening to our experiment of a conversation between humans, city, and Country. But the number of Americans on unemployment rolls surged to more than a 1½ year high at the end of 2019 to over 1.7 mln.The easing of Middle East tensions is helping Wall Street post another modest +0.5% gain today. Overnight European markets posted slighty larger gains especially in Frankfurt. Yesterday, Asian markets had large rallies, with Shanghai up +0.9%, Hong Kong up +1.7% and Tokyo up +2.3% on the day.The US Federal Reserve is reporting that consumer debt in the US rose +3.6% pa in November, staying high after the +5.5% rise in October.Canadian housing starts unexpectedly fell in December and building permits shrank in November, casting a downer on Canadian economic prospects.China's consumer inflation rate rose to 4.5% and an eight year high in December although that was slightly less than what was expected. It is all driven by the food price. On the producer price front, the deflationary period is ending with only a -0.5% drop in December, a far cry from the -1.6% drop in October. And China, the world's largest car market, sold 21 miln vehicles in 2019 but that was a decrease from 2018.
