Of every position on the 2023 Arizona State Sun Devils football roster, perhaps no other spot has more uncertainty than the linebacker position. The Sun Devils are facing a complete overhaul at the position after years of consistent play from guys like Merlin Robertson and Kyle Soelle. Now, the position will be led by Washington State Cougars transfer Travion Brown and returning vets like Will Shaffer, James Djonkam, Caleb McCullough, and many more. The entire roster has next to no playtime experience, meaning vets like those just listed and newbies like freshman K'Vion Thunderbird or transfers Tate Romney and Krew Jackson will all be on an equal playing field. Will this be a good thing or a bad thing for a new-look defense under Brian Ward? Host Richie Bradshaw discusses the uncertainty at the position and why a starting gig is up for absolutely anybody on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast. This episode is brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook, Official Sportsbook of Locked On. This new era of Sun Devil football under Kenny Dillingham is defined by a focus on home. On establishing, and reestablishing, relationships with local players and coaches. On strengthening the ties with the fanbase and local communities. On Activating the Valley. If this new era can have some players like Kyle Soelle, the Sun Devils may just make it happen. Soelle came to ASU in 2017 as a solid local signee from powerhouse Saguaro High School in Scottsdale. While he didn't come in with the fanfare of blue chip AZ prep stars like DJ Foster or N'Keal Harry, Soelle put his head down and went to work. He redshirted. He then made his mark on special teams. He became a valuable rotational defender. He would then become a multi-year team captain, one of the Pac-12's best linebackers, and now an NFL Draft prospect. In doing so, he became a shining example of what a hometown hero can mean to a program. In this episode, Kyle and I discuss the highs and lows of his Sun Devil career, his preparation for the NFL Draft, what he thinks of the new era of ASU football, his legacy, and much more.

We are 24 hours away from kickoff for Arizona State Sun Devils football! It's week three of the 2022 season and the final game of the schedule before the Sun Devils begin PAC-12 conference play against some pretty talented teams including the Utah Utes and USC Trojans. But first, Arizona State needs to take care of business at home against the Eastern Michigan Eagles football program. The Eagles currently sit at 1-1 on the year, but this will be their first game of the season against a Power Five school, and the Sun Devils, despite a 1-1 start to the 2022 season, have shown the ability to be a rock-solid competitor. Eastern Michigan will be relying on its offense to put up points behind quarterback Taylor Powell's arm, but their starting quarterback and his weapons like Samson Evans and David Drummond have been inconsistent in their first two games of the year. That does not bode well for an Arizona State Sun Devils football defense that's playing with confidence and swagger behind the performances of Kyle Soelle, Nesta Jade Silvera, Chris Edmonds, and co. Defensively, the Eagles will have their hands full with a unit lacking a true difference-maker while the Sun Devils have superstars like Xavavian Valladay ready to dominate. If Emory Jones can take his next step forward as a passer and firmly establish some chemistry with his weapons, then the Sun Devils may finally be able to field a complete offense capable of scoring in more ways than one. You can't start off your season any better than 1-0, but the Arizona State Sun Devils football team exceeded our expectations for its opening game of the college football 2022 season! The Sun Devils took the NAU Lumberjacks football team behind the woodshed on Thursday night to the tune of a 40-3 victory and both sides of the ball looked incredibly efficient and deadly. Offensively, Emory Jones was everything Sun Devils fans had hoped for, as the transfer quarterback completed over 70% of his passes and scored two touchdowns on the ground. Speaking of the ground game, the team accumulated 267-yards and four total touchdowns led by Xazavian Valladay and his 115-yard, two-touchdown outing. The passing game looked confident with fine performances from Andre Johnson and Messiah Swinson. Defensively, Arizona State played nearly flawless football, including two interceptions by Chris Edmonds and Kyle Soelle. Merlin Robertson dazzled in the final opening game of his Arizona State Sun Devils football career. The secondary played well in what Herm Edwards described as "vanilla" coverages, but it leaves some hope that they can continue to improve moving forward. Even special teams looked good with Carter Brown going 4/4 on both his field goal and PATs for a complete performance for the Arizona State Sun Devils in week one of the 2022 season. Game week is finally here! Arizona State Sun Devils football is finally back, as the team prepares to kick off tomorrow night against the NAU Lumberjacks. The Sun Devils have gone under significant changes since their kickoff a year ago between losing players to the 2022 NFL Draft, the NCAA Transfer Portal, and guys simply running out of eligibility. Among these changes will be a new starting quarterback Emory Jones in his first career game with the Sun Devils. He is joined by a new-look offense that will feature a power run game featuring newcomer Xazavian Valladay and third-year man Daniyel Ngata. Defensively, Arizona State will see some familiar faces manning the middle of the field in team captains Merlin Robertson and Kyle Soelle. The defensive line faces a massive makeover, but stalwarts like Omarr Norman-Lott, Tautala Pesefea Jr., and 2021 leading sack artist B.J. Green will look to generate a consistent pass rush. The secondary will be missing both Timarcus Davis and Jordan Clark for injury reasons, leaving guys like Ed Woods and Ro Torrence in line for large roles. How will the 2022 Arizona State Sun Devils football program start the year? Host Richie Bradshaw breaks down everything you need to know about the game and gives some bold predictions and a final score for this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast!BetOnline.net has you covered this season with more props, odds, and lines than ever before. BetOnline – Where The Game Starts! No step in the NFL Draft process has seen an increase in popularity that the Resse's Senior Bowl has over the last decade+. Under executive director Jim Nagy, the Senior Bowl has become one of, if not the most crucial points of the NFL Draft process and has assembled what feels like an All-Star game for college football's top senior/graduating players. Recently, the official Senior Bowl website released its preseason watchlist of nearly 500 players, which included three Arizona State Sun Devils football stars: Emory Jones, LaDarius Henderson, and Nesta Jade Silvera. These three portray some intriguing upside for the Sun Devils in 2022 and could all play major roles in the team's success. There are, however, a handful of players we wish could also get recognition, such as Cam Johnson, Xazavian Valladay, Travez Moore, Merlin Robertson, Kyle Soelle, Khoury Bethley, and other guys, as well. What's better than one homegrown star linebacker? TWO homegrown star linebackers.   This fall, Arizona State fans will get to see something special. For the last few seasons, Kyle Soelle has emerged as one of the more productive and unsung linebackers in the Pac-12. And this season, he will likely be joined in the starting lineup by his younger brother Connor. Their love of ASU began as kids, with goals set to one day become one of the Sun Devils they watched play. That mission was accomplished when Connor joined Kyle at ASU in 2019, and now as Kyle gears up for a final season in Tempe, he'll get to play alongside his brother—who's poised for a breakout of his own.   On this episode, Kyle, Connor, and I discuss what it means to play alongside each other for their hometown university, the pride they carry with them as homegrown players, how deep their brotherly competitive streak runs, what to expect out of the defense this fall, and so much more.

On the number side of things, the Arizona State Sun Devils football program didn't suffer nearly as many losses to the NCAA Transfer Portal as its offensive counterpart did. Unfortunately, the defense did lose quite a few significant talents that were going to be incredibly important factors for the 2022 unit, and at each level of the defense nonetheless. The Arizona State Sun Devils must cope with the losses of defensive lineman Jermayne Lole, linebacker Eric Gentry, and cornerback Tommi Hill, along with linebacker Jordan Banks and defensive back Cam Phillips. The aforementioned Lole, Gentry, and Hill will be tough to replace. Lole was slated to be the starting defensive tackle for the team and was arguably the Sun Devils' best player heading into this season. Arizona State does have some good, young players to help mitigate his loss in Omarr Norman-Lott and B.J. Green, but Lole's presence will be sorely missed. Replacing Gentry will be difficult with a lack of proven depth at linebacker, but long-established starters Merlin Robertson and Kyle Soelle should be able to shoulder most of the load. In the secondary, Hill was projected to be one of the starting outside cornerbacks this year, which was especially crucial this season following the losses of Chase Lucas and Jack Jones to the NFL. Timarcus Davis will step into Hill's role, while a rotation of Ro Torrence, Keon Markham, and others will help to cover up this loss (no pun intended). Host Richie Bradshaw gives his detailed analysis of these losses on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast. Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Similar to the offense, the Arizona State Sun Devils football team has a lot of new faces on the defensive side of the ball. After losing several key players from 2021 to both the 2022 NFL Draft and the NCAA Transfer Portal, the 2022 Arizona State Sun Devils' defense will look very different from its 2021 counterpart. Unlike the offense, however, we aren't as concerned with how the defense is going to roll out for 2022. The defense has some important faces returning to the middle of the field in Merlin Robertson and Kyle Soelle. The defensive line and secondary both have some intriguing depth with the former perhaps being the deepest unit on the entire Arizona State Sun Devils football roster. The defense isn't without some questions that need answering, obviously. For one, how will this deep defensive line look? Will we see a core starting unit of veteran guys like Michael Matus, Nesta Jade Silvera, and Travez Moore? How much will young guns such as Omarr Norman-Lott or B.J. Green fit into the equation? We can't forget about the other several talented players behind them, as well, so how will this defense utilize its deep line? Meanwhile, at linebacker, we know that Robertson and Soelle will start, but who's the third linebacker next to them? Is it Kyle's brother Conner Soelle? Is it Will Shaffer? Is it Caleb McCullough? And finally, in the secondary, there are lots of fun faces to fancy throughout, but who will start on the boundary? Jordan Clark will have the nickel role to himself, but who could start outside? Timarcus Davis, Keon Markham, and Ro Torrence seem like the most likely guys, but could a youngster like Isaiah Johnson surprise? After breaking down the offensive side of the football and its potential week one starting 11, we turn to the defensive side and predict the week one starting 11 for Arizona State Sun Devils football. It all starts up front with a deep and talented defensive line. Captained by Michael Matus, the group has many veteran players like Travez Moore, Anthonie Cooper, Tautala Psesefea Jr., and Nesta Jade Silvera manning the trenches with some fun young up-and-comers like B.J. Green, Omarr Norman-Lott, Joe Moore, Gharin Stansbury, and freshman Robby Harrison. Linebackers Merlin Robertson and Kyle Soelle will be in charge of managing the defense entirely but look for guys like Connor Soelle, Caleb McCullough, and Will Shaffer to get some playing time as the potential future at the position. The secondary is practically brand new with newcomers like Ro Torrence, Khoury Bethley, and Chris Edmonds all transferring to the program. Veterans Timarcus Davis and brothers Keon Markham and Kejuan Markham will lead the group with rising star Jordan Clark feeling like a safe bet for the starting nickel cornerback. How will all of these players shake out with their respective roles in 2022? The Arizona State Sun Devils football program has a lot of veteran and well-established players headed into the 2022 season. This, of course, will have us focusing on who must step into a full-time leadership role for the team. This has, perhaps, never been more important for the Arizona State Sun Devils football program than it will be in 2022. ASU Sun Devils football is in a massive retooling stage, one of the biggest the program has ever seen, following the departure of both its coordinators, its starting quarterback Jayden Daniels, running back Rachaad White, wide receivers Ricky Pearsall and LV Bunkley-Shelton, tight end Curtis Hodges, offensive tackle Kellen Diesch, center Dohnovan West, defensive ends Tyler John and Jermayne Lole, top linebacker Darien Butler, and entire starting secondary including Chase Lucas and Jack Jones for various reasons. With all those losses in one offseason, plus countless other departures, we will be looking to our remaining veterans to step up this year. Fifth-year guys like Merlin Robertson and Kyle Soelle top our list, as well as veteran offensive lineman LaDarius Henderson, quarterback Emory Jones, and second-year transfer wide receiver Bryan Thompson also potentially looking at incredibly important roles. It certainly wouldn't hurt if some other guys like Khoury Bethley, Ben Scott, Camron Johnson, and others stepped up, too. All in all, host Richie Bradshaw dives into detail on how and why these guys could/need to become leaders for the Arizona State Sun Devils football program in 2022.Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Nobody loves a good ole fashion debate over the preseason all-honors lists, and the preseason All-PAC-12 lists have been released for four teams. Of those four teams, eight Arizona State Sun Devils football stars made the lists. Of them, return specialist DJ Taylor made both First-Team and Second-Team as a punt returner and kick returner, respectively (Taylor was the only First-Team selection for the Arizona State Sun Devils football program). The Second-Team selections included running back Xazavien Valladay, offensive lineman LaDarius Henderson, and linebacker Merlin Robertson. The Third-Team had offensive lineman Ben Scott and linebacker Kyle Soelle. And finally, Fourth-Team had defensive lineman Nesta Jade-Silvera and safety Khoury Bethley. Host Richie Bradshaw gives his thoughts on these eight Arizona Stae Sun Devils football stars and their respective rankings on the preseason All-PAC-12 lists, plus seven more players who could surprise and make waves in 2022.
