In this episode, we visit with Laurie McIntosh, who loves to share with others...create unique burgers with her students, and fundraise with little ones who want to make and have made a difference in the class and the community. Laurie started her teaching career in Lacombe and moved to Lethbridge with the Holy Spirit School Division about five years ago. The journey of learning starts at birth and continues throughout our lives; dozens of kindergarten students have been blessed to start their school journey in Laurie McIntosh's class. In our visit, Laurie shares some of the magic experiences she has had with her students, parents and educators and a number of books and strategies we can all use in class and at home. As Laurie shares titles, she expands on how the book(s) are used in the class, the conversations the student have, the takeaways that go home, and the activities that connect each other as we read. So many of the titles shared could be used in support of the organizing ideas of Alberta's Physical Education and Wellness curriculum, particularly Human Development and Character Development. She has just written a book with Dr. Jody Carrington called Teachers These Days, which focuses on the importance of teacher wellness as a conduit for student wellness and thriving. Laurie and I sit down to talk about how the pandemic has surprised us, the power of creativity as an expression of our humanity, and digging into our capacity for vulnerability. Laurie is a mama to 3, wife of 1 and kindergarten teacher to many. She currently teaches a full day, full time kindergarten program for Holy Spirit School Division in Lethbridge, Alberta. Laurie is known as @mrsmacskinders on Instagram and Twitter where she shares her educator journey. Teaching for the past 13 years, she thrives on creating a culture of kindness in the classroom, fostering community collaborations with those who believe in the power of connection and building relationships with learners and their families in unique ways. Laurie is forever grateful for not 1 but 2 appearances as a guest on The Ellen Show in Season 12 where she was recognized for her teaching and incorporating Ellen’s “be kind to one another” motto into all she does. Laurie is currently co authoring the book “Teachers These Days” with the amazing Dr. Jody Carrington and couldn’t be more excited to share her story along with the stories of others who walk this path in early 2021.
3 Main Points: Finding and recognizing the dreams, needs, and abilities of all learners. How do we cheer people on and step out of our world to show gratitude and love to make the world better? Give credit, give compliments, give praise to people too early as opposed to too late. Laurie McIntosh and George Couros have an energetic and inspiring conversation about education, "dreams, needs, and abilities" as described by Tom Hierck and reflected on by Laurie in this podcast, and the impact of consistent kindness. The two also talk about Laurie's upcoming book, Teachers These Days which she co-writes with Jody Carrington! Both George and Laurie are currently residing in Alberta, Canada, so the two talk about education in their province and even hold a fun side conversation about hockey rivalries! One of the most powerful stories that Laurie shares in this podcast and in her upcoming book is one she experienced with a co-worker and how she recognized the different ways that people show appreciation, especially when we are consistent with our kindness over extended periods of time. Laurie acknowledges that she is limited on energy at times and shares the very real exhaustion that she feels, she also shares how she continues to be kind, present, and mindful despite that exhaustion. Listen to the end to hear what George says that actually brings Laurie to tears (payback for when she made George cry on a plane)! The episode closes with this advice from George: "Give credit, give compliments, give praise to people too early as opposed to too late." Episode 45 Of #TellYourStory With Laurie McIntosh
It’s 2007. Shutter shades are all the rage. People have to juggle ipods and flip phones for their respective music and T9 texting needs. Facebook is replacing My space. Transformers has just come out on the big screen. Picture a ninth-grade boy in Cambridge, Nova Scotia, Canada. One frosty February morning about, he enters his school wearing a pink shirt. The jeers start quietly, as people nudge and elbow one another, snickering under their breaths. Pink shirt. He’s unaware until louder, the quiet jeering quickly gains momentum, raucous name calling ensues, and the taunting continues relentlessly throughout the day. The boy, who entered his high-school that day, unaware that a singular colour could make him feel so wrong, emerges, crushed by the barrage of cruel insults and bullying. Thankfully, two Grade 12 students Travis Price and David Sheppard decide to take an iconic stand against bullying that day. They go to a nearby discount store and buy 50 pink shirts, including tank tops, to wear to school the next day. Overnight, more than 850 kids get the memo and show up to school the next day dawning pink shirts in solidarity with the Grade 9 boy. More than 10 years later, their act of standing up to bullying has grown into a worldwide movement called Pink Shirt Day. In honour of Pink Shirt Day, which takes place February 27th 2019, I thought I’d gather a few terrific ideas that anyone could use to celebrate kindness in schools and communities for this special bonus episode of KindSight 101. You’ll hear from a music teacher (Margaret Dzbik), a dance teacher (Karley Allen), a classroom teacher (Danielle Miller), and I’ll give you two bonus ideas (inspired by Tamara Letter and Laurie McIntosh) that you could implement in your classroom for the special day! #pinkshirtday2019
