Boone White grew up with a stutter. Public speaking was something he avoided until years of running weekly safety meetings forced him to figure it out. He got better by going shorter, ditching the scripts, and replacing bullet points with stories. Now he's a general superintendent at ICM Construction, a construction influencer, and one of the more honest voices in the trades about what it actually takes to shift a jobsite culture from the inside. In this episode, Jesse and Boone get into what it looks like to lead crews who've been doing this longer than you have, why systems matter more than blame, and how tools like Last Planner can either build a team or blow one up depending on how you roll them out. What you'll hear:How Boone turned a childhood stutter into a communication strength — and why story-driven toolbox talks land harder than scripted onesWhat it looks like to lead hardheaded, old-school crews without losing their respect or your standardsThe honest story of how he butchered Last Planner on his first try — and why Lean tools get weaponized against the culture they're supposed to buildThe workforce pressures forcing construction to get serious about how it treats people, whether it wants to or notInside ICM's Align Academy and the Old Dog Community — and why experienced supers need a peer group as much as anyoneBoone's push to change how Mississippi bids and delivers workBoone's a working super who figured things out the hard way. As a child growing up in Saudi Arabia, Saad Al-Munajem learned how to build a wall around himself. After being laughed at while trying to read aloud in class, he spent years hiding his stutter — avoiding speaking, overthinking every interaction, and quietly carrying the fear of being heard. But what happens when someone decides to stop hiding? In this episode of Proud Stutter, Saad shares the moments that slowly changed his relationship to his voice and led him to found Mutalaathem, a nonprofit creating community for Arabic-speaking people who stutter across the Middle East and North Africa. In this episode of Proud Stutter, Maya talks with Elizabeth Escobar, a person who stutters, substitute teacher, and advocate, about trauma, healing, and learning to reconnect with herself after years of silence and self-protection. Elizabeth reflects on growing up with a stutter, being bullied throughout school, and how therapy helped her begin processing memories and emotions that had long been buried. She shares how returning to her former schools as a substitute teacher became an unexpected turning point, allowing her to support students while also healing parts of her younger self. The conversation explores the lasting emotional impact of stuttering, the importance of being seen beyond speech differences, and how community and advocacy can create space for transformation. Elizabeth also opens up about losing her mother, volunteering after a difficult period in her life, and eventually speaking before county council to advocate for adults who stutter. After 40 years in print journalism, Vince Vawter didn't quite feel finished with writing. In 2013, he published his debut novel, Paperboy — a story about an 11-year-old boy named Victor Vollmer living in Memphis in 1959 who struggles to talk without stuttering. Blending fiction and memoir, the book draws heavily from Vince's own childhood and the challenges he faced finding his voice.Paperboy earned a prestigious Newberry Honor in 2014 and has now been published in 22 different languages. Years later, Vince began to imagine the story on stage, and at a friend's suggestion, it evolved into a musical. In 2023, the Manhattan School of Music performed it in New York, and later this year it will debut professionally at the Weathervane Theatre in Whitefield, New Hampshire.Following the success of Paperboy, readers wanted more of Victor's story. Vince obliged, and in 2018 he released Copyboy, which follows Victor at 17, and in 2023 he completed the trilogy with Manboy, where Victor is 21 and still navigating life with a stutter as he becomes a young adult in the tumultuous late 1960s in the U.S.I've known Vince for over two decades — his son and my brother my brother were college roommates and close friends. As I began carving out my own path in journalism, I remember early conversations with him, including our shared connection to the Evansville Courier & Press, though I'm not sure if our time there overlapped when I was working there in high school.More recently, we reconnected on Substack and have interacted regularly. Now nearing 80, Vince remains as sharp as ever. In February, he released his latest book, The Stuttering Stoic: How an Ancient Philosophy Helped Me Find My Voice. He joins me on the podcast this week to reflect on his long, accomplished journalism career and what he now calls his “second career” as an author. He also shares about living with a stutter and how writing — along with his study of Stoicism — has helped him find his voice.Paperboy was originally published by Penguin Random House, one of the industry's “Big Five” publishers. But along the way, Vince faced pressure to change elements of his story. Wanting to remain true to his voice and experience, he ultimately chose to self-publish rather than compromise, and in this conversation he talks about how he ultimately settled on that decision. You can learn more about Vince and buy his books at vincevawter.com.I'd also love to connect with you on Substack, where I write essays and share updates about future episodes. This film is a powerful story about friendship, perserverance, and duty.  The King's Speech showed us the incredible talents of both Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush. It is a special movie that may be slower paced than other films from 2010. However, it is worth your time. It feels even more powerful because it is a true story. A wonderful telling of a king who's voice was truly needed during WWII.Looking back, was it deserving of the Best Picture Oscar for 2010? She earned her master's in speech-language pathology from the University of Illinois and completed her Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University. Her work focuses on young children who stutter, with a special interest in how cognitive, emotional, and language-related factors influence the way stuttering develops—and why some children recover while others do not. In her research, she uses a variety of tools, from parent reports and behavioral observation to physiological measures like skin conductance, heart rate, and brain activity, to get a more complete picture of stuttering. Her ultimate goal is to support more informed and individualized approaches to assessment and treatment.

For a long time, scientists have suspected that stuttering — a common speech condition that affects an estimated 1 in every 100 people — could be heritable. Despite how common it is, it's still a remarkably understudied condition. Geneticists Piper Below and Dillon Pruett were determined to fix that. With the help of 23andMe data, they recently identified 57 genetic regions linked to stuttering in the human genome. Their findings represent a new breakthrough in how researchers think about speech conditions, genetics and the conditions that are linked to them. They're what some are calling a "quantum leap" in the field.Interested in more human biology and genetics episodes? Social-Media Hoax Frames Innocent Man, Sean Bailey for Indiana Murder; Real Suspect Caught After DNA Break Imagine getting hauled off to jail for a murder you didn't commit—because someone made up fake Facebook accounts and sent videos of a dead body… pretending to be you. That's exactly what happened to Shawn Bailey, a 33-year-old man from Louisville who spent nearly 10 days locked up for a brutal killing in Indiana that he had nothing to do with. According to investigators, Bailey was set up in one of the most twisted, tech-savvy frame jobs we've seen in a while. It started on April 15, when deputies in Hanover, Indiana—just across the river from Louisville—were called to check on 35-year-old Wilma Gayle Robertson. What they found was horrific: Robertson was dead inside her home on Hickory Drive, stabbed in the back. Hours later, Bailey was arrested for her murder. On the surface, it looked like an open-and-shut case. There was allegedly a confession. There was video evidence—a clip sent through Facebook showing Robertson's lifeless body on the floor, with Chris Brown's “Stutter” playing in the background. One message attached to it taunted: “Tell her baby daddy he doesn't have to worry about her anymore… I did him a solid favor.” Chilling stuff. And the Facebook account? It had Shawn Bailey's name on it. Slam dunk, right? Wrong. As detectives kept digging, the cracks in the story widened. The DNA from the crime scene didn't match Bailey. Not even close. And the digital trail? It didn't point to him at all. Instead, the fake accounts, the video, the entire setup led back to Nigel Thomas, a 34-year-old aspiring rapper from Oxford, Ohio, who goes by the stage name “Nati Bang.” According to Jefferson County prosecutors, Thomas not only stabbed Wilma Robertson but then orchestrated an elaborate scheme to make it look like Bailey did it—going so far as to create multiple bogus Facebook profiles, fabricate a confession, and even send out the murder video under Bailey's name. Prosecutor David Sutter didn't mince words. He said Thomas “engaged in an elaborate plan to frame Shawn Bailey,” and praised law enforcement from Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio for tearing that web of lies apart. On Friday, Thomas was arrested in Ohio. Bailey's charges were dropped, and he was finally released. No word yet on why Thomas targeted Robertson, or what his connection to her even was—but prosecutors say those details are coming. Meanwhile, Wilma Robertson—remembered for her kind heart and uplifting social media presence—leaves behind two children. She worked as a certified nursing assistant. Her life was real. Her death was senseless. And the attempt to twist it into a clout-chasing stunt for someone else's gain? Unforgivable. The justice system got it right—eventually. But you have to ask: how many other “airtight cases” are really just one fake profile away from falling apart? Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? No word yet on why Thomas targeted Robertson, or what his connection to her even was—but prosecutors say those details are coming. But you have to ask: how many other “airtight cases” are really just one fake profile away from falling apart? Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? (but thanks for that quote anyway). Hosted by Klein, Ally, and a cast of weirdos (both on the team and from their audience), the show is known for its raw, offbeat style, offering a mix of sarcastic banter, candid interviews, and an unfiltered take on everything from culture to the chaos of everyday life. With a loyal, engaged fanbase and an addiction for pushing boundaries, the show delivers the perfect blend of humor and insight, all while keeping things fun, fresh, and sometimes a little bit illegal. 2024 © 2021 Audacy, Inc.
