Send us a textWoHos!Welp. This week we looked at two films, all right. Mom hated THE PERFECTION and there was no love lost between Mac & STOPMOTION.CW for mention/suggestion of child rape in THE PERFECTION and childhood trauma in STOPMOTION.Both films are about mental illness and both fail spectacularly in its depiction. THE PERFECTION could have been a joyous, campy romp, but it is too careless with its subject matter and results in a horribly distasteful mess.STOPMOTION has some wonderful stop motion sequences which may be worth the price of admission, but even with its short run time, it overstays its welcome. This was a fun conversation about two repellent films.Next time we are covering two films that deal with class warfare: READY OR NOT & THE PLATFORM. A wrong turn leads them into the mysterious forests of Norse legend, where an ancient evil exists and stalks them at every turn".We talk a lot about how much we preferred the novel of THE RITUAL much more than the film. Definitely check out the Chapter Markers for this one, if you are just here for the film talk.I make a number of references to the first conversation we had about eXistenZ.  By way of explanation, awhile back, we had paired eXistenZ with TETSUO: THE IRON MAN, but the episode was lost. We are splitting our body horror shows into squishy body horror and metallic body horror. Part 1 of squishy was SOCIETY and for our metallic series, we are looking at TETSUO: THE IRON MAN and TITANE.Next time, we are looking at Exploitation films with THE HILLS HAVE EYES (1977) from the US and a yet-to-be-determined International film (HIGH LANE, which was originally on the docket is only available in our area in a dubbed form and I cannot). Stay tuned! After that, we are doing a pair that I have been looking forward to all year: Grim AF movies with BRAZIL from the UK and WHEN EVIL LURKS/CUANDO ACECHA LA MALDAD from Argentina.Get in touch/Tell all your friends/You know the drill, WoHos! Mac enjoyed this more than I did. I felt super sad at the depiction of the teenage daughter as an object of sexual attention and nothing much else.Strong performances by JoBeth Williams, Beatrice Straight, Zelda Rubenstein, and Craig T. Nelson together with the gnarly practical effects are enough to recommend this film for both of us. We give it 4 TV's!I was much more jazzed about the atmospheric THE OTHER by the ever-impressive filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar. Mac and I split on the rewatchability of this film. What do you think?I gave it 4.25 keys and Mac gave it a straight 4 keys. This ep is tangent-heavy. We talk about oversharing strangers, materialism, the 80s and what should be left to the dustpin of history as well as ownership/property, photographing dead people, and the relationship between mind and body.Coming up next are two special shows featuring friends of the show and esteemed WoHos, Stefan MacDonald discussing VIDEODROME and Martin Harries discussing DR. WoHos!This week we are joined by our friends, Georgia and John Macey from the Comfort Films Podcast to examine two masterclasses in suspense, THE WAGES OF FEAR & SORCERER.We examine the real horror, which is, of course, capitalism, in both these films. We also look at connections to the trickster figure in the folklore of Indigenous people, a queer reading of the relationship between Mario and Luigi, Mother Nature fighting back against the bald greed of the desperate characters in both of these films.Have you seen these films? We would recommend you do! For this episode, I am looking at two stories that involve snuff films: EVIL DEAD TRAP from Japan and THESIS / TESIS from Spain.Neither makes a whole lot of sense, but each has its brilliant charms. The kills in EVIL DEAD TRAP are great and the plot takes a serious left turn in the third act. THESIS is one of my favorite films despite some of the annoying plot holes. Everyone is a joy to behold, especially Fele Martinez, who, along with Eduardo Noriega appears in ABRE LOS OJOS, also directed by Alejandro Amenabar.Coming up next is our show about writers, as it appears our Tech Horror Ep. may have been reclaimed by the gods of the Internet. We looked at IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS and BURNING.Coming up, we have some wonderful shows with guests planned. Comfortilms Podcast will join us to talk THE WAGES OF FEAR & SORCEROR and Stefan MacDonald, From Drag Mitch to Hell will join us to talk VIDEODROME for its 40th anniversary! We will be watching WENDELL & WILD and THE UNICORN WARS next, and speaking of Amenabar, after that, THE OTHERS & POLTERGEIST.Be good and be good to each other. He began years of therapy which in time made it possible for him to speak again. As he began to recover, he and Orson Welles talked on the phone each week for a couple of hours. "He was strong and supportive", Cotten wrote, "and whenever I used the wrong word (which was frequently) he would say, 'That's a much better word, Jo, I'm going to use it.'" He and Welles would meet for lunch and reminisce. When Cotten announced he had written a book, Welles asked for the manuscript and read it that night (Cotten, Joseph (1987). Vanity Will Get You Somewhere. San Francisco: Mercury House. ISBN 0-916515-17-6). Welles died seven years before Cotten's death.Next time on the main show, Mac and I tackle films about possession with THE EXORCIST from the US & THE WAILING from South Korea.Get in touch with us on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, or wherever you listen to pods.
